Sony SmartBand Launched – Big-name fitness tracker

At CES 2014 Sony announced the Sony SmartBand, a fitness tracker that logs your activity and exercise.

Fitness devices are a strong feature of the new products of CES 2014, and one of the highest-profile of the lot is the Sony SmartBand. It's a fitness tracker 'core' that fits into a rubbery band designed to be worn around your wrist. However, Sony also teased additional accessories that will let you wear the SmartBand core on your trainers, or clothing.

Sony revealed just a few details about the SmartBand, merely teasing that the device will be available in 'Spring'. However, it appears to function much like the other fitness trackers we've seen recently.

It connects to your smartphone using Bluetooth LE, hooking into the Lifelog app. Its battery is a rechargeable unit, which you charge using the microUSB port on one side of the core unit.

The Sony SmartBand does not have GPS, instead using accelerometer sensors to judge the number of steps you've taken – and the number of calories that equates to.

The Sony SmartBand joins a rapidly-growing crowd of fitness trackers, made popular by long-standing players in the market such as the Nike Smartwatch and the various Fitbi trackers. Other big-name fitness trackers to be revealed at CES 2014 include the LG Lifeband Touch.

Other Sony announcements include the new Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and a brand new TV range for 2014.
