Forget Google Glass, printer specialist Epson is wading in on the smart glasses scene, officially unveiling the Epson Moverio BT-200 headset at CES 2014.
Having previously showcased prototype smart glasses offerings, the latest Epson Moverio device has now been thrown into the realms of reality, lining up as something of a halfway house between the headline grabbing Google Glass and gaming-centric Oculus Rift.
“The Epson Moverio BT-200 smart glasses offer consumers crystal clear video as well as access to incredible new augmented reality experiences and relevant information according to their personal interests and needs,” Atsunari Tsuda, General Manager of the Visual Products Division at Epson said.
They added: “Leveraging Epson’s leadership in LCD projection technology and visual imaging, the Moverio BT-200’s transparent display and powerful new features give users a new way of seeing the world.”
Epson Moverio BT-200 Features
Built around a binocular display that utilises a miniaturised LCD-based projection lens setup, the Epson Moverio BT-200 creates a semi-transparent full colour image on the glasses in front of your eyes. This image then feels like it is being projected over real-world objects.
Connected to an Android-based smartphone sized computer, the Epson Moverio BT-200 glasses feature a display with a reasonable 960 x 540 pixel resolution while a 16:9 aspect ratio allows for more engaging multimedia consumption.
With a 23-degree field of view, the new Moverio, which can be worn over standard prescription glasses if so required, is capable of generating a 360-degree panoramic experience when partnered with third-party applications, taking you into something of a virtual reality world.
Brimmed with all manner of sensors, including the standard gyroscope and accelerometer, the Android 4.0 powered Epson Moverio BT-200 also benefits from Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity options and Dolby Digital audio.
Epson Moverio BT-200 Release Date and Price
Heading to the US this March priced a penny shy of $700 (£426), there is currently no word on an Epson Moverio BT-200 UK release date.
