Apple remembers two year anniversary of Steve Jobs’ death

On the anniversary of Steve Jobs’ death, current Apple CEO Tim Cook has led the company in remembering its co-founder and former talismanic leader.

With today, October 5th, marking the two year anniversary of the passing of Steve Jobs, his replacement in leading the world’s biggest company has helped the company remember the man who brought the world the likes of the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

In a note to all Apple employees yesterday, Cook suggested that Apple “will continue to honour his memory by dedicating ourselves to the work he loved so much.”

The internal note, uncovered and published by 9to5Mac read: “Team, Tomorrow marks the second anniversary of Steve’s death. I hope everyone will reflect on what he meant to all of us and to the world. Steve was an amazing human being and left the world a better place.”

Cook added: “I think of him often and find enormous strength in memories of his friendship, vision and leadership. He left behind a company that only he could have built and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

“We will continue to honour his memory by dedicating ourselves to the work he loved so much. There is no higher tribute to his memory. I know that he would be proud of all of you. Best, Tim.”

Offering further remembrance of his former boss, Cook today Tweeted: “Second anniversary of Steve's death. Going on a long hike today and reflecting on his friendship and all the dents he made in the universe.”

Although Steve Jobs often proved a controversial figure, his effect in re-establishing Apple as a leader of the tech scene helped take the company from the edge of ruin to become the most valuable in the world. Having repeatedly helped redefine the expectations of the industry, Jobs has widely been regarded by his peers as a visionary, an innovator and a figure that will be remembered for changing the world.

Google Nexus 5 price to be half that of iPhone 5S reports claim

With Google Nexus 5 rumours hitting fever pitch, latest reports have suggested that the Google Nexus 5 price will be half that of Apple’s flagship iPhone 5S.

While last year’s Google Nexus 4 offering having grabbed consumer’s attentions with its premium array of innards and minimalist price tag, it looks like the Google Nexus 5 will follow suit, with latest reports claiming the phone will be equally friendly on the wallet.

Citing “a source familiar with Google,” latest reports have hinted that the Google Nexus 5 will be “half the price” of the iPhone 5S, a phone which costs between £549 and £709 depending on spec. With the Google Nexus 4 having set wannabe owners back just £279 with 16GB of internal storage, it is believed the follow-on handset will feature a similar price.

With a raft of Google Nexus 5 rumours having done the rounds in recent weeks, it has been suggested that the eagerly awaited Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One rival will land as the first phone to come packing the recently announced Android 4.4 KitKat OS. A Google Nexus 5 release date has been mooted for later this month.

Leaked Google Nexus 5 specs have suggested that the handset will run an array of innards similar to that LG G2, with the South Korean company believed to have been handed manufacturing duties for the phone.

With a 5.2-inch edge-to-edge Full HD display having been tipped for inclusion, leaked Google Nexus 5 benchmarks have suggested that the phone will be paralleled on power only by the iPhone 5S, eclipsing all Android based devices that have preceded it.

Further Google Nexus 5 specs have been tipped to include a 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera and wireless charging capabilities.

Nokia Lumia 1520 leaks again, this time in red

Yet more Nokia Lumia 1520 pictures have leaked online, with the rumoured ‘phablet’ sized device shown off in a new red colour scheme.

Widely expected to be a Windows Phone 8 powered rival to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Nokia Lumia 1520 has been the subject of much rumour in speculation in recent weeks, with new images of the mooted handset having now emerged online.

Appearing courtesy of the Twitter based serial tech tipster @Evleaks, the latest Nokia 1520 pictures has shown the oversized smartphone in a red hue for the first time, suggesting that like handsets such as the Nokia Lumia 1020, the device will be available in a range of vibrant colours.

According to recent Nokia Lumia 1520 rumours, the phone will line up with a 6-inch display in tow, with the expansive screen sporting a 1080p Full HD resolution and Nokia’s ClearBlack technologies.

Although it is not believed the Lumia 1520 will feature the same 41-megapixel camera as the 1020, it has been suggested that the Huawei Ascend Mate rival will host the same snapper as the Nokia Lumia 925 just wrapped within the company’s now familiar polycarbonate designs.

With the Nokia Lumia 1520 rumours hitting fever point, the Finnish phone manufacturer last month confirmed that a Nokia Lumia 1520 release date will be held on October 22 at the company’s annual conference which will this year be held in Abu Dhabi.

Expected to be one of the stars of the show, the Nokia Lumia 1520 is not believed to be the only new device on show at the upcoming convention. Having to date left the tablet market to its rivals such as Apple with the iPad mini and Google with the Nexus 7 2, Nokia now looks set to enter the tablet race.

Leaked as the Nokia Lumia 2520, the Nokia tablet will reportedly run a 10.1-inch display alongside a 6.7-megapixel rear-mounted camera and the Windows 8 operating system at its core.

Panasonic TX-P55VT65 TV Review

What is the Panasonic TX-P55VT65?

The Panasonic P55VT65 is a 55-inch TV from what would have been Panasonic’s flagship plasma series if the brand hadn’t gone a bit mad - in a good way - and launched the P60ZT65. It thus boasts a high-end plasma filter; a huge contrast range; extensive Smart TV features and picture calibration aids; 3D playback; and the endorsement of the independent THX ‘quality assurance’ group. If Panasonic's record with Plasma TVs is anything to go by, we're in for a treat.

Panasonic TX-P55VT65: Design and Features

Plasma traditionally struggles to compete with LCD technology aesthetically. Mostly because it’s impossible to support a heavy plasma panel in the sort of barely-there screen frames routinely wrapped around LCD TVs these days. But the Panasonic P55VT65 at least has a stab at looking good thanks to its use of a ‘single layer’ fascia, its silver outer trim and a surprisingly glamorous and open-looking metal stand that cunningly disguises the fact that the P55VT65 weighs a tonne by modern TV standards.

It's a shame then that, as with other Panasonic TVs this year, the Panasonic P55VT65 has a disappointment in store with its connections, only providing three HDMIs rather than the four we’d hope to see on any ambitious TV these days.

The connectivity improves with the discovery of twin tuners for both Freesat and Freeview HD, making it possible to watch one programme on a connected Smart device and a different one on the main TV screen.

Its multimedia connections are good, too. For starters there are USBs you can use for either recording from the TV to USB hard drives or playing photo, video and music files from USB storage devices. But also you get both LAN and built-in Wi-Fi support for streaming files from DLNA PCs and accessing Panasonic’s online Viera Connect platform.

There’s much to admire about Viera Connect, such as its clear, pretty interface and intuitive content finding tools. The set works very well with Panasonic’s excellent Viera Remote 2 app for iOS and Android devices too, and there’s enough content around to make things look busy.

However, there’s no denying that the platform could still do with a few more of the UK’s key video streaming services - LoveFilm, the ITV Player, 4OD and Demand 5 are particularly noticeable by their absence.

The star of the P55VT65’s smart TV show has to be its new My Home Screen interface. This multi-hub systems does a cracking job of simplifying access to your favourite content - especially as you and other members of your household can easily set up your own personal home hubs containing links to only the content you love. For a much more detailed look at My Home Screen, check out our previous feature.

Panasonic P55VT65

The P55VT65’s picture setup menus are comprehensive, with full colour, gamma and white balance management toolsets and an unusually long suite of impressively useful picture presets. These include two THX modes that deliver great results for movies and two slots an Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) expert could use for calibrating image settings designed to suit your room conditions.

The THX modes are there, of course, because the TV has passed the rigorous image quality performance criteria - for 3D as well as 2D - demanded by George Lucas’s independent quality assurance organisation.

At the P55VT65’s heart is one of Panasonic’s latest NeoPlasma Black 3000 plasma panels, with their 300Hz Focused Field Drive technology for improved image stability and motion handling. It also uses Panasonic’s Infinite Black Ultra high-contrast technology and a superior contrast filter to that found in the step down GT60 series, and has enough power in its Hexa-Processing Engine to deliver an impressive 30,000 steps of gradation.

One final feature of the P55VT65 worth highlighting is its use of front-firing speakers - supported by a rear-mounted woofer. Propelling the sound straight out of the screen rather than downwards like most TVs do should help soundtracks sound much more potent and clear.

Panasonic P55VT65

Panasonic TX-P55VT65: Set Up

There are a few basic rules of thumb to follow if you want to get the best out of the Panasonic P55VT65. First, avoid the far too aggressive Dynamic picture preset, at least when watching 2D. You should also turn off the Eco mode that adjusts the picture in relation to the brightness of the room you’re in, and you should treat the set’s noise reduction routines with suspicion, leaving them off entirely with HD footage.

The Intelligent Frame Creation motion interpolation system on the TV should also be handled with care, as if you use it on too high a level it can make pictures look processed and unnatural - especially when watching Blu-rays. However, you might find you need to use the IFC processing on its lowest level, as this helps remove/reduce some dot fizzing noise over moving skin tones.

Aside from these points the Panasonic P55VT65 can be as easy or as hard to set up as you like, depending on whether you’re happy to stick with the well-conceived THX presets for dark-room movie viewing and a slightly subdued take on the Standard mode for daytime TV viewing, or whether you want to get involved with the immensely flexible picture adjustments.

Is the iPhone 5C officially a flop? Another retail giant slashes the price

Significant discounts on brand new Apple iPhone handsets are absolutely unheard of, but US big box store Best Buy has become the latest major retailer across the pond to slash the price of the iPhone 5C.

Best Buy is offering the iPhone 5C for $50 (about £30) on a two-year contract, which is half of the $100 (around £60) Apple has instructed retailers to ask punters for the colourful handset.

Best Buy's move, as reported by ABC news, furnishes users with a $50 gift card towards the cost of the iPhone 5C, hence circumnavigating Apple's recommended retail price. It's the largest cut yet after rival retailers Target and Wal-Mart knocked twenty bucks off the asking price.

This comes just two weeks after the handset, which represented a serious change of tact for Apple, became available to buy in the US and around the world and is a sure-fire sign that consumers haven't been turned on by the offering.

Effectively an iPhone 5 in a plastic shell, the 5C replaced its predecessor to become Apple's second tier handset behind the iPhone 5S. However, while the iPhone 5S is still listed for an 'October' dispatch after selling out on day one around the world, there have been no such issues for the readily available iPhone 5S.

Apple acknowledged that the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C combined sold 9 million units in the first weekend on sale, but didn't segregate each handset's performance.

Even through the iPhone 5C was billed as a more affordable handset, most observers felt Apple's pricing remained excessive at £469, just £80 cheaper than the flagship model, which packs the new A7 and M7 processors, the TouchID fingerprint sensor and multiple improvements to the device's camera.

Perhaps the price drops, which have yet to make their way to the UK, will allow the iPhone 5C the opportunity to halt the march of the mid-range Android brigade?

GTA 5 doesn’t glamorize violence, say character voice actors

GTA 5 voice actors

From left: Steve Ogg, Shawn Fonteno and Ned Luke

The voice actors that play the three GTA 5 protagonists have spoken out against critical commentary suggesting the game glamorises violence.

Despite the existence of FPS titles like Call of Duty or Battlefield, GTA games have always had a reputation for being an used as an example of what’s wrong with society.

However, the three chaps who voice the three GTA 5 characters, Trevor, Michael and Franklin have spoken out in defence of the game.

“Anyone who has any conception at all about the game and hasn’t played them should go play the games before they open their mouths,” said Ned Luke who voices Michael. “The biggest misconception is that it glamorizes violence. It really doesn’t. If you look at my character, Michael, he’s rich, but he’s a miserable man.”

GTA 5 already has 20 million gamers playing it, despite launch day issues, and has received critical acclaim suggesting it is the best in the series.

Steven Ogg, who plays the slightly psychopathic Trevor, suggests those who are anti-GTA titles should take a look at television and film content, which regularly presents the same issues.

“The hypocrisy drives me crazy. It just sets the wrong focus,” said Ogg. “Why not talk about gun control? Why not talk about parenting? Why not talk about the lack of family values? There are so many other thing to talk about. Look at what’s on TV.”

“Video games are just an easy scapegoat.”

Franklin is voiced by Shawn Fonteno, a previous member of a gang himself. Fonteno admits that he has partaken in some of the activities portrayed in GTA 5, and the game certainly isn’t an advocate.

“I know a few people that live that kind of [violent] lifestyle and when they play GTA they can relate to it,” said Fonteno. “It has an impact to the point that they’re happy that they can just play it in the game and not have to relive it in real life. And that’s the big key thing with this, man. It’s just a video game.”

“People already have it in their mind that GTA is for kids because it’s a game. Then they hear about the violence and they’re instantly going to attack because it’s a game… Once they get the game in their hands, they’ll see. It says it big as day –Mature. It’s not for the kids to go get.”

Google Nexus smartwatch codenamed Gem, will launch end of October

Google Nexus smartwatch concept

Google Nexus smartwatch concept

A Google Nexus smartwatch is apparently on its way this month, currently bearing the codename Gem.

It seems that Google is about to pull its own smartwatch out of the bag with rumours of an incoming Google Gem device doing the rounds.

The latest rumours state Google’s smartwatch is codenamed the Nexus Gem and could launch alongside the new Android 4.4 KitKat OS.

Rumours of a Google smartwatch have been circulating for many months now, but originally such a device was tipped for a 2014 launch.

Coming from the Google page of Android Police founder, Artem Russakovskii, the rumour tips a launch date of October 31, although the majority suggest a Google event is scheduled for October 14.

“Google will announce a Nexus watch, codenamed Gem, likely together with the KitKat announcement”, posted Russakovskii.

Google’s Nexus Gem smartwatch unveiling may well be timed to coincide with the launch of the eagerly anticipated Google Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat.

As always, these rumours shouldn’t be taken as concrete fact, with Russakovskii even prefacing his information with a warning:

“Nothing is 100 per cent until it’s officially announced. None of this may end up being true, though I have a good level of confidence in the sources.”

Currently, there are no indications as to what any of the Google smartwatch specs will be, but hopefully it will perform better than the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

The Galaxy Gear is only compatible with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in the UK and offers limited functionality for the user at present.

Google will most likely make its smartwatch compatible with all Android devices and it should launch with a price tag lower than the £299 Galaxy Gear.

A Nexus smartwatch could be Google’s second wearable technology venture, following on from Google Glass.

Grand Theft Auto Online Game Review

Available on Xbox 360 and PS3 as part of GTA 5

A lot of developers like to argue that their multiplayer component qualifies as a separate game, but GTA Online is one of the few to justify the claim. Rolled out through a patch two weeks after the launch of GTA 5, it’s a different entity, taking the streets and people of Los Santos, not to mention those of the surrounding Blaine County, and rolling them into a experience that sits somewhere between a conventional multiplayer mode and a fully-fledged MMO.

Like an MMO, GTA Online has a persistent world, character creation and development, housing to buy, social structures and clothes, cars and weapons to collect. Unlike an MMO it has a very limited number of players online in the same space as once, and much of the activity is focused on the kind of stuff you’d find in a straight multiplayer mode, with co-op, team deathmatch and racing activities very much to the fore. The more you play, the more you realise that this approach is both a strength and a weakness.

SEE ALSO: GTA Online problems

GTA Online

Let’s get the launch out of the way. We’ve seen some disasters in our time, but GTA Online’s launch ranks amongst the worst. Playing on PS3, we had a 24-hour wait between installing the patch and actually completing the first mission, and couldn’t even get into a game for much of that time. To make things worse we had to go through character creation and the intro cinematic several times before the servers saved our data, and we’ve still experienced numerous freezes, crashes and drop-outs in the days since. We know that Rockstar faced an unprecedented challenge, and that the servers were bound to be flooded, but – really – there's no excuse for a cock-up on this scale.

Each patch has made the game slightly better, but even with the game up and running, it’s not always a smooth experience. There are long delays between finishing one activity and getting back into the main free-roaming map, and sometimes simply getting a group together to start a co-op mission takes so long that you feel like dropping out – and frequently your new-found buddies will. An MMO released in this state would probably never recover. GTA Online’s advantage is that it’s not an MMO – it’s tied in to a game that many of us have bought already – and that you’re not paying any kind of subscription for the pleasure.

GTA Online

Rockstar has gone for an interesting take on character creation. Rather than tailoring your character using the kind of tools you’d find in an MMO or sports sim, you choose their four grandparents and then alter how much influence each has over their overall appearance. Being GTA there are no RPG-like stats, either. You can set how much time your character spends in certain activities, and this will affect their size, their weight and their initial clothing. The only things you can control directly are their hairstyles, beards and glasses. It’s an unusual system, and we’re not 100% sure it works. It’s hard to get the kind of look you’re really going for, and we found the grandparent portraits hard to see clearly on a 37-inch TV screen.

Once you have a character, you see them fly into Los Santos and the adventure (fingers crossed, hum nervously) begins. There are a handful of tutorial missions, then you’re set loose on the big city, causing mayhem on an ad-hoc basis, taking missions from a handful of familiar faces, and joining your fellow players in multiplayer ‘jobs’.

For the moment, the jobs are the mainstay of the game. You’ll find team deathmatches with respawning, more challenging no-respawn variants, and a wide range of races covering cars, bikes, motorbikes, boats and jetskis. There are co-op missions where you all work together to repossess cars, steal drugs or hijack a mobile meth lab, and team missions where two teams compete for the objective.

In the background of all this, you also need to be earning cash, stealing cars and purchasing new weapons and add-ons. Weapons and custom options only become available as you level up through the game’s reputation system, and the more you play the more you’ll find that being stuck with the starter pistol early on in a multiplayer event is a serious disadvantage.

GTA Online

This basic structure seems pretty sound, but currently GTA Online suffers from two big problems. The first is that, with only sixteen players in your world at any time there are only so many to get involved in any activity. This doesn’t matter when it’s a race, which are good fun even with two or three, but it’s a disaster for the deathmatch jobs that fall flat when there are four to six guys running around a sprawling map. You can spend what seems like an age waiting while a no respawn game sets up, then another age wandering aimlessly towards a signature on the radar, only to go down with a pop in seconds. This isn’t what most of us call fun.

The second is that, while there is an awful lot of content here, it’s not always easily discoverable. A lot of the really good stuff is locked off until you reach a certain level, and while the game has several different mechanisms – the map, quick GPS functions, smartphone prompts – to get you quickly into an activity, it’s still oddly difficult to find something to do and other people to do it with.

As the game moves on, crews (established teams) will sort this out, and it’s a much more enjoyable experience if you can play it with real-world friends, but be aware if you’re logging on on your own. You can often find a bunch of people to play with and move from job to job using a very handy voting screen, but even this will often lead to a grind of deathmatch after deathmatch, and trust us when we say that endless deathmatch is not GTA’s biggest strength. It’s no Call of Duty or Battlefield 3.

Weirdly, GTA Online doesn’t seem as strong visually as the main game, either. While the external locations are the same, some of the areas where you do jobs seems weirdly lacking in interest or texture, and the characters you build aren’t modelled or rendered with the same personality or attention to detail as Michael, Trevor and the rest. That’s only natural given how they’re generated, but it still makes for an odd shift when you go back and forth between single-player and multiplayer, as the game invites you to do.

GTA Online

So far, then, GTA Online might not sound like too much fun, so why persist? Because when it does click into place, it’s absolutely fantastic. Everything from holding up a licquor store to racing mountain bikes downhill from the Vinewood sign is a lot more exciting with more players, and there’s a sense that chaos is always lurking just around the corner. It’s the kind of game where stories naturally evolve.

For example, your humble correspondent got invited to a motorbike street race. On the second corner one racer hit something explosive and the whole group went up in flames. Some of us respawned on new motorbikes, others stole the next available vehicle. I grabbed a car, raced through the flames and knocked one competitor off his bike and ran another one over in the process. This kind of thing doesn’t happen in Gran Turismo.

Before long, we’ll all have similar stories. In fact, we’ll have better ones about the jobs that have gone wrong; about the time we went parachuting; about the time the enemy team stole the drugs but we blocked their exit with a truck, threw a grenade and blew the whole crew to kingdom come. This is what GTA Online should and could be about. It’s just a shame that there’s all this other stuff to get past first.

Verdict

With a few more patches, more players and a handful of tweaks, GTA Online has the potential to be great. Unfortunately what we have right now is only sporadically brilliant. It’s too hard to get to the best content and too hard to get enough players involved, and it’s only when chaos breaks out in the middle of a race or mission that the authentic GTA experience pushes through. Even in the few days we’ve been playing we’ve seen significant improvements, but GTA Online still has a way to go before it matches the genius of the single-player game.

PS4 to outsell Xbox One before Christmas suggest analysts

The PS4 will outsell the Xbox One in pre-Christmas sales according to industry analysts IDC.

Sony will win the pre-Christmas next-generation console war, predicts IDC, with the PS4 winning out over its rival due to factors like price.

The analysts predict that Sony’s next-generation console bundles will be more popular with consumers this Christmas, mostly due to the PS4’s lower price point, retailing for £349 in comparison to the £429 Xbox One price.

Helping this is Sony’s recent announcement of the PS4 Killzone: Shadow Fall mega bundle , which despite offering an additional DualShock 4 controller, the PlayStation Camera and a copy of the game, will retail for within £10 of the basic Xbox One bundle.

IDC also predict that the sale of full and micro games alongside add-on DLC for consoles will overtake those made for PC for the first time this year.

“The number of online console gamers around the globe is on pace to exceed 165 million by 2017”, said Lewis Ward, Research Manager of Gaming at IDC. “As a result, the opportunity to sell these gamers digital assets through Wii U, Xbox One, and PS4 online storefronts will grow substantially in the next several years.”

The Chinese government’s recent decision to lift its longtime ban on the sale of games consoles and related titles will see sales of console hardware bundles soar by millions.

Looking to the future of living-room gaming, IDC suggests the word console will evolve to encompass other platforms by 2017.

“The difference between traditional games consoles, PCs connected to HDTVs, and a variety of set-top boxes and smart TVs that can play games will eventually be semantic,” added Ward. “IT appears unlikely that Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony will be driven out of the living room from a gaming persective by 2017 as [a] result of non-console competition from the likes of Valve/Steam, OUYA, cable/telecom companies, or related hardware and Web service providers.”

PS4 PlayStation app features detailed by Sony

Sony has offered more information on the official PS4 PlayStation app, which will be free to download on iOS and Android.

Originally unveiled during the Tokyo Game Show keynote, Sony has provided further details on the functionality of the PS4 PlayStation app.

Speaking to Shuhei Yoshida, the official EU PlayStation blog has outlined some of the function of the upcoming PlayStation app, which should launch with the PS4.

“It’s an application that anyone can download for free on iOS and Android devices,” explained Yoshida. “There are a variety of things you can do with it. You can connect to your PlayStation profile, and send messages – even voice messages – to friends between your smartphone and PS4.”

Offering a so-called PS4 experience on tablets and smartphones, gamers will be able to stay in touch with their friends, compare trophies and watch PS4 recorded or live-streamed gameplay and more using the PlayStation app.

“A friend on PS4 can also send out an invitation for a multiplayer game, which you can then check on the App, and you can also purchase PS4 games from PlayStation Store. Your game will immediately start downloading while you’re away.”

Utilising the PS4 Cloud, it seems that there could be increased connectivity between Sony’s next-generation console and the official companion app.

As well as designed PS4 UI features, the PlayStation app can also be utilised as a second-screen experience for compatible titles, which already include PlayStation Camera game The PlayRoom.

“There are many big publishers creating their own apps for their games, like Watch_Dogs or Battlefield and that’s great,” added Yoshida. “But smaller developers can use PlayStation App to connect to PS4 and load an application, like drawing software for example, so that you don’t have to download and install a specific app on your smartphone. It’s open to all PS4 developers to use.”

Sony has said there will be more PlayStation App features unveiled before it is released, which we expect to tie in with the November 29 PS4 release date in the UK.

BlackBerry Z30 Phone Review

What is the BlackBerry Z30?

The BlackBerry Z30 is the largest phone BlackBerry has ever produced, at least it has the largest screen. It’s a larger-screen alternative to the BlackBerry Z10, its 5-inch screen matching the most-celebrated Android phones of the year. At £500 it matches phones like the Galaxy S4 on price too. If you care about apps at all, that phone or an iPhone 5C is a much better choice. But there’s no doubting that this is a quality phone in most respects.

BlackBerry Z30 3

BlackBerry Z30 – Design

It’s common these days for phones to try to look and feel as thin and light as possible. In a world of phones of ever-increasing size, it’s quite a feat, but the BlackBerry Z30 doesn’t care much about such things.

The BlackBerry Z30 would rather seem strong and reliable. That is part of the reasoning behind the look of the phone’s back, which is made of a ‘glass weave’ plastic that looks a lot like carbon fibre and is twice as strong as normal plastic, according to BlackBerry.

These may be the words of a cynic, but the ‘strong’ look of this glass weave rear is undoubtedly its most important aspect. Its actual protective benefits don’t stand up to all that much scrutiny. A phone is most at risk of serious damage when dropped on its edge, causing ripples of pressure that can shatter a screen.

BlackBerry Z30 6

The parts of the phone that would impact in the BlackBerry Z30 in this situation are the standard metal effect plastic edges, not the clever glass weave parts. To look further into the issue, we should also consider what sort of strength a glass weave structure could supply – there’s more than one kind of strength.

The BlackBerry Z30’s weave rear likely offers more high tensile strength than standard plastic, meaning the back casing won’t snap or deform as easily. It also helps to give the phone a strong, tough feel. The back casing is topped off with a soft touch layer, which determines how it feels on the fingers (soft and smooth), but it also flexes less than bog-standard plastic.

Adding to the impression of strength, the BlackBerry Z30 isn’t particularly thin or light. It’s 9.4mm thick and at 170g it’s much heavier than most rivals of this size. The Galaxy S4 is 130g, the HTC One is 143g. It’s a chunky beast. However, it’s small enough to avoid causing any serious usability problems.

BlackBerry Z30 5

It has a few extra hardware features that nerds will love, too. On its left edge next to the usual microUSB port is a microHDMI video output, and under the plastic cover is a microSD memory card slot.

You get 16GB of internal storage, and to be frank that’ll probably do the trick unless you want to store music or videos (given there are so few games for BlackBerry 10 phones). The final neat hardware extra is the multi-colour LED indicator that flashes red, green or blue depending on the type of notification it’s telling you about. It sits above the screen, hidden in the screen surround when not flashing.

The BlackBerry Z30 isn’t the most beautiful phone in the world. It cares too much about practicality to trade away everything for looks. The buttons are obvious and its ports are not remotely disguised. But thanks to the redesigned back, it comes across as a step up from the Z10.

BlackBerry Z30

BlackBerry Z30 – Screen Quality

The BlackBerry Z30’s screen continues the trend. Its display is not cutting edge, but it is very good. It’s a 1,280 x 720 Super AMOLED panel that’s five inches across. All it loses out on is resolution – the Galaxy S4 has a screen of the same size and type, but it’s Full HD, 1,920 x 1,080 instead.

Does it matter? Not much. This is a sharp screen, although if you look close you can tell it’s not as sharp as the best.

Other aspects of the display are either very good or excellent. Contrast and black levels are top-notch, viewing angles are fab and colour is surprisingly good.

AMOLED-type screens often have oversaturated colours, and can appear blueish when tilted at an angle. Colours are fairly faithful here and there’s no major colour distortion caused by angled viewing.

As we’d expect from a Super AMOLED screen, response times are excellent too, meaning you don’t get any ‘trails’ when flicking quickly through high-contrast menus.

There’s little to seriously dislike about this screen.

iPhone 5S motion sensor issues reported

Reports suggest that the iPhone 5S may have serious issues with its advanced motion sensors.

When the iPhone 5S launched on September 20, Apple pointed to its brand new M7 coprocessor as a revolution in mobile motion-sensing technology.

However, just two weeks on we're hearing reports of inaccuracies with the device's motion and orientation-sensing capabilities. There's an extensive forum thread over on MacRumours detailing the experiences of numerous iPhone 5S owners.

Sure enough, according to a follow-up report over on Gizmodo, the iPhone 5S's sensors are noticeably off. The site conducted tests to ascertain the extent of these issues using Apple's own motion-sensing apps.

One careful look at the spirit level tool revealed that the iPhone 5S was two to three degrees out when oriented according to a good old fashioned physical equivalent. Other users had reported a four to six degree slip.

The same test with an iPhone 5 revealed that the problem was specific to the new model, and could be a hardware issue rather than an easy-to-fix software one.

Another test using Apple's gyroscope tool showed up a similar three degree discrepancy in the iPhone 5S. This would have considerable repercussions for games that utilise the iPhone's gyroscope for movement, such as the Real Racing series.

Sure enough, another test involving Real Racing 3 on an iPhone 5S showed that the cars naturally tended to steer left when the device was perfectly level.

The iPhone 5S compass app was also shown to be out by as much as 10 degrees when compared to the readings of a physical compass.

Given that the degree of error varies from user to user, it's possible that the iPhone 5S handsets aren't being calibrated properly during construction. It could be that a simple software update isn't a viable fix.

Is this the latest Apple gaffe following Antennagate and the Apple Maps debacle?

Google Play Music app coming to iOS this month

Google Music

Google Play Music All Access

Google is finally set to launch a Google Play Music app for iPhone and iPad some time this month, according to a recent report.

Google Play Music has been around in some form since November 2011, when it was essentially launched as Google's answer to iTunes - with the additional ability to upload 20,000 of your own songs to the cloud for free. Perhaps fittingly, only Android owners received a native app at the time.

Now, according to Engadget's sources, a Google Play Music app could finally be on its way to iOS. The search giant is apparently testing the application internally (there are still a few bugs), and will launch it to the public by the end of October.

That will still have been two years on from the launch of the Google Play Music service, of course, during which time iPhone and iPad owners have only been able to access the service through a web app.

There have been a couple of mitigating factors. For one thing, Flash was listed as a necessary DRM measure when Google Play Music All Access was launched back in May. Apple's iOS devices, of course, don't do Flash, so Google has had to find a work-around.

Then there's that Google Play Music All Access element itself. Put simply, Google Play Music has only really existed as a finished, complete app for a relatively short time with the addition of the aforementioned feature.

Google Play Music All Access adds a Spotify-like music subscription service that enables unlimited music streaming for £9.99 per month.

iOS owners may be late to the Google Play Music party, but at least they're arriving when it's in full swing. Of course, with iTunes Radio now available through iOS 7, there's another party to choose from. And this one's free to get into.

Twitter goes public with its $1 billion IPO plans, confirms 215m monthly users

After privately signalling its intentions last month, Twitter has taken the next step to its long-awaited stock market floatation by officially filing papers with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

In submitting the requisite S-1 document, which became available to the public on Thursday, Twitter announced that it has now amassed 215m monthly active users, with 100m of those users checking out their timelines or sending tweets every single day. Those 215m users are sending 500 million tweets a day.

The filing could value the company at $15 billion and could earn Twitter (which will trade under the monicker TWTR) a $1 billion injection of cash.

However, the company, which has 2,000 employees, is yet to price its shares. That step will happen once it has made a case to potential shareholders. Neither has it announced a date for the Initial Public Offering.

One noteworthy discovery within the S-1 document is that Twitter is yet to turn a profit, seven years after the first tweet was sent The company, which now makes most of its cash (65 per cent) from mobile advertising. The filing states that although Twitter raked in $253.6m in the first six months of 2013, it posted a net loss of $69.3 million. That's a 41 per cent increase.

Twitter will hope the IPO process runs smoother than Facebook's floatation in earlier this year. The company's share price nosedived following its IPO, cutting the value of the company in half before rebounding this summer.

The social network will also be aware of the other struggles endured by tech companies floating on the stock exchange. Zynga especially has endured a really tough time recently, but then again Zynga is not Twitter and given its standing on the global stage and its ever growing influence on news, celebrity, politics and practically everything else, Twitter can expect a better return.

Amazon set-top box coming before Christmas, report claims

Amazon's rumoured set-top box for HD television sets will be available to buy before Christmas, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

The device, which has been the subject of speculation for most of this year, would likely provide competition to the Apple TV set-top box, as well as the lesser-used Google TV platform and other connected television services.

It is reasonable to assume that any box from Amazon would serve up games and applications from the Android Appstore, its MP3 store, the usual video streaming platforms, as well as the Amazon Prime service that recently began offering original shows.

The WSJ doesn't have any details on name, specs or prices, but it seems fair to assume that the Kindle TV name would be older consideration. Given Amazon's recent pricing history, it's also unlikely that the box will break the bank.

In recent years, with Amazon's Kindle readers and Kindle Fire tablets, the company has taken huge hits on hardware in order to get the devices into the hands of users who then gorge on digital content from the Kindle Store, App Store and Amazon Prime video.

Having a set-top box connected straight to television sets would really give Amazon the opportunity to push the merits of its Instant Video service, which offers thousands of TV shows and movies to subscribers to the free, fast home delivery service. It also offers thousands more to rent or buy.

It would also surely integrated the Amazon Cloud locker service, giving users instant access to uploaded photos as well as content purchased through its digital platforms on a range of devices.

Amazon is thought to be on the verge of launching a trio of new Kindle Fire tablets for the holiday season. Should that be the case, it's likely that the set-top box would share the same billing, so watch this space.

Would you be in the market for an Amazon set-top box? Could it compete with Apple TV? Might Amazon be bold enough to price the device somewhere in the region of Sky's £10 Now TV box? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Battlefield 4 beta problems: EA release full issue list

Battlefield 4 doesn't launch until 1 November, but fans are already getting to grips with the exclusive Beta.

A test version has been available since 1 October for Battlefield 3 Premium members, some owners of Medal of Honor Warfighter and Battlefield 4 Digital Deluxe Edition pre-order customers.

Players are reporting a range of issues and a full list of known problems has been published on the official site. The Battlefield team is looking into them internally.

As well as specific problems for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, EA is informing gamers that there can be a stats delay of an hour across all interfaces - when players unlock a weapon it can take time before it's available to use.

PC players are advised that Battlefield 4 Beta does not support Win32 and 32-Bit operating systems. The manufacturers also recommend checking that Windows is updated and graphic cards are running their latest drivers. This should help avoid unusually low performances, crashes and freezes.

Other PC problems include:

  • Video settings not being saved after rebooting the game.

  • The tooltip “E” to enter the Venom being visible at a 400 meter distance.

  • Punkbuster Crashing issues

Most of the bugs faced by Xbox 360 users occur within gameplay . Characters can be left floating when they try and jump on bollards, cruise missiles don't always destroy vehicles when using Vehicle Drop and the requirements for unlock criteria aren't always displayed.

Additional issues for Xbox 360 include:

  • Player stats in Battledash not matching the stats displayed on Battlelog.

  • An 8 seconds non-interactive pause when leaving a Multiplayer session or after pressing Start when booting the game.

  • The first attachment of any weapon that is not unlocked being the only attachment shown for the first unlocked weapon.

The list of issues reported by those using PS3 is definitely the longest at the moment. Concerns range from infinite loading screens when logging out of multiplayer to an inability to perform knife take downs and the Hit Indicator not being visible.

Here's a more thorough list:

  • When choosing to quit during the EOR, “underworld” may be visible

  • The camera transition before the EOR screen is underwater.

  • Destroying an enemy tank near the Flag A may trigger the map’s Mini-Levolution event.

  • Quitting the XMB™ menu after the “Press Start” screen may cause forced shutdown.

  • The background screen for the losing team during EOR, is placed “under the game world” for Domination and Obliteration game modes.

  • The EOD Bot can’t arm or disarm MCOMs on Rush mode.

  • Disconnecting and reconnecting the Ethernet cable while playing can cause an endless loading loop.

  • Several Medals, Ribbons, and Dog Tags may be displayed in the “My Soldier” menu.

The Beta becomes downloadable for all PC, Xbox 360, or PlayStation 3 users on Friday through Origin. On 1 November the full game will be available for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, before it rolls out for next generation games consoles in the following weeks. It will be available in the UK for Xbox One on 22 November and PS4 on 29 November.

PS4 stock “bit tight prior to Christmas” for retailers

Sony has discussed PS4 stock concerns, saying stock will be a “bit tight” before Christmas for anyone who hasn’t pre-ordered the next-gen console.

Addressing concerns over PS4 stock, it seems everyone who has already pre-ordered their console will receive it before Santa comes, but store stock beyond that will be limited.

Speaking to Edge, Sony UK boss Fergal Gara, says “demand for PS4 is not really a concern,” especially with over a million pre-orders already registered. However, the company may struggle to fulfil that demand for people buying directly on or after the PS4 release date.

“We’re right in the fine detail of volume planning right now. What I will say is that over the launch window of the first two to three months there’s going to be ample stock and we’ll catch up,” explained Gara. “Pre-Christmas is huge and anyone that has pre-ordered a PS4 now is almost certain to get it before Christmas, and there will be more on top of that – barring any problems with ships sinking or whatever else that could go wrong that’s out of our control.”

Sony announced that PS4 pre-orders have topped one million units during its Gamescom 2013 press conference, with earlier reports from retailers suggesting that pre-orders placed after August 6 may not arrive on the November 29 release date in the UK.

“There is a very significant volume in the market on day one, but shipment two is within days of that so what we’re expecting is a big surge and then lots of follow up volume.”

“Our advice to gamers is that if you want one, that’s fantastic, we’re delighted, but get your name on the preorder list of partner retailers because that puts you first in line for any delays and any follow up volume. So it’ll be a bit tight prior to Christmas but there will be ample PS4 in those first few weeks.”

It seems there is a possibility of the average gamer walking into a retailer on or after the PS4 release date actually picking up Sony’s next-generation console, but we imagine there will be queues miles long on the eve of November 29 full of expectant gamers.

Next, read which retailers are still offering PS4 pre-orders.

Android 4.4 KitKat screenshots leak, reveal new features

Screenshots of the new Android 4.4 KitKat OS have leaked online; revealing some of the new features it will offer users.

An early build of the next Google mobile OS has been captured in some screengrabs, still bearing the Android Key Lime Pie moniker, prior to the KitKat name announcement.

There are some subtle colour scheme changes evident within the screenshots, with white becoming more dominant. Reports also suggest the animations in Android 4.4 KitKat are smoother than its predecessors.

The really obvious changes are those made to the camera UI. Google has introduced Instagram-style filters and allows users to preview them before applying them permanently.

Google now also offers the option to save images as a PDF file, or send them directly to a local printer with options for paper size, colours, numbers of copies and orientation.

Printing integration has also been added to the Settings menu, as has a new Payments system, which allows wireless NFC payments from the main Android architecture rather than having to rely on third-party apps.

Android 4.4 KitKat will also apparently pre-load additional apps like Google Drive and Google Keep. Google Drive is an online cloud storage service for documents and other content, while Google Keep is a note-taking service.

Unlike Apple’s iOS 7, Android 4.4 KitKat isn’t expected to be a radical redesign, but rather a gradual introduction of new features that aim “to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.”

Android 4.4 KitKat was officially announced at the beginning of September, with Google opting for a chocolate-themed name for its next mobile OS rather than the dessert everyone expected.

Expected to launch alongside the Nexus 5 on October 14, Google has kept tight lipped about any Android 4.4 KitKat features.

“Android is the operating system that powers over 1 billion smartphones and tablets. Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean,” reads the official site. “As everybody finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats, KitKat!”

LG G Flex to launch in November with curved screen?

LG is expected to launch the LG G Flex in November, complete with a curved display.

Although the plans are yet finalised, the LG G Flex has been pencilled in for a November launch with LG debuting its first curved display smartphone.

According to information and an image obtained by CNET, LG is currently preparing to launch the LG G Flex with a curved display, using the company’s plastic OLED screen technology.

As seen in the obtained sketch above, the LG G Flex display will be set in a curved position similar to the LG Curved OLED TVs, rather than being able to bend and flex.

Aiming to comfortably curve around your face, it could increase call quality on the smartphone, but we’re not sure what it would be like to use other features on.

Like the LG Curved OLED TVs, the concave arc of the LG G Flex wouldn’t be so severe it looks odd, but rather a shallow arch.

In May, LG issued a press release announcing it was developing a “unbreakable and flexible 5-inch plastic OLED panel” for smartphones.

“For the first time to the public, the company will unveil an unbreakable and flexible 5-inch plastic OLED panel for mobile devices,” read the official LG statement. “The development comes at a crucial time when smart devices are being used more than ever and at increased risk for damage from drops, hits, and other accidents.”

Samsung is also reportedly preparing a limited edition Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with a flexible display. It’s unknown whether it’ll be a curved affair or just introduce an unbreakable display into the existing Galaxy Note 3 design.

The limited edition Galaxy Note 3 could be marketed as the Galaxy Note 3 Active, coming complete with waterproof and dustproof accreditation.

BBM for Android beta starts up again offering new version

Reports suggest that there’s a new BBM for Android beta available to selected test groups, offering a new version of messaging app.

BlackBerry has released a new version of the BBM for Android beta, offering a refreshed UI ahead of the much anticipated general launch.

According to CrackBerry sources, the latest BBM for Android beta offers a new welcome screen that explains about notifications and an option to toggle the constant notification for the Android status bar.

The overall UI experience has also been cleaned up a bit more in anticipation of the app’s general availability.

Although it seems that users are still in for quite a wait before the general release of the BBM for Android and iPhone app, the new beta launch suggests the process is still moving along.

Originally scheduled for a September 21 release date, BBM for Android and iPhone had to be delayed following the leak of the early beta version on the Google Play store.

“We are pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and iPhone,” an official BlackBerry spokeperson said on September 22. “Prior to lunching BBM for Android, an unreleased version of the BBM for Android app was posted online. Consequently, this unreleased version caused issues, which we have attempted to address throughout the day.”

“Our teams continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it’s ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM.”

The BBM for Android and iPhone app was expected to be launched later that week, but now, nearly three weeks later, there’s still no revised release date announced.

“As soon as we are able, we will begin a staggered roll-out of BBM for Android and continue the roll-out of BBM for iPhone.”
