Images and promo video leak of Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 and 8.4

Next week, in New York, Samsung will announce at least two new Galaxy Tab devices. The Tab S 8.4 and the Tab S 10.5 will both feature AMOLED displays, which is a big deal, especially on that larger tablet.

The new images show some surprising details, and some that we've mentioned were likely before. The fingerprint scanner, for example, is now all but confirmed. What we didn't know though, was just how thin these tablets were going to be. The materials show a depth of just 6.6mm and a weight of just 465g for the 10.5-inch model and 287g for the 8.4.

The rumours also suggest that the screen will have a resolution of 2560x1600, which will make both tablets pretty impressive visually. The processor is said to be Samsung's octo-core, and it is coupled with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage - expandable with microSD - and Android KitKat 4.4.3.

There's also a really rather funky promo video too, which you can see below.

These tablets may also end up being available in similar form as Nexus tabs at some point. We have seen numerous leaks that suggest an 8.4-inch Nexus is coming, and as that size isn't the most common it is possible to make a leap to assume this device will be the basis for Google's version.

Tab S

The launch event takes place on June 12th in New York's Madison Square Garden, and there has also been the suggestion that the tablets will be available to pre-order the next day. The retail launch is scheduled for the end of June. Trusted Reviews will be in New York, so we'll have plenty of hands-on content to show once everything is official.

Computex 2014 Highlights: Wearables and transformers lead Taipei show

The annual Computex show took place in Taipei earlier this week, with a number of high-profile launches joined by a raft of smaller technologies which could have a big impact on upcoming products.

The second largest computer expo in the world after Germany’s CeBIT, Computex is also the largest show of its type to take place in Asia. As such, it’s the home event for a number of the companies that are shaping the future of IT.

It’s where major Taiwanese companies such as Asus and Acer typically launch many of their major product lines for the year, and this year was no different. Japanese manufacturers such as Panasonic and Toshiba also make for a strong showing.

The presence of such heavy hitters naturally draws American chipset companies like Intel, AMD, and Nvidia, among others.

So if you’re remotely interested in the future of computer technology, Computex should be on your radar.

Still, we know that it can be difficult to follow all of the announcements and releases from this busy and far-removed two-day event. That’s why we thought we’d round-up some of the key news to emerge from Computex 2014.

Intel gets to the Core M of the issue

Intel

Perhaps the biggest and most far-reaching reveal of Computex 2014 came from international mega chip maker Intel, which took the wraps off its exciting new Core M processor.

This new standard is built using a tiny 14-nm production process, meaning it requires far less energy to power. The benefits for tablet and laptop devices are obvious, but no less impressive.

We’re talking better battery life, slimmer form factors, and quieter running, as there will no longer be any need for cooling fans.

To illustrate what kind of devices will be possible with these new Intel Core M processors, the company unveiled a 12.5-inch tablet-PC hybrid prototype with a ridiculously slim form factor. This reference device, called the Llama Mountain (we're not sure either), is just 7.2mm thin, and weighs a relatively slight 670 grams (not including the clip-in keyboard).

It's a tablet, essentially, but with sufficient performance to run the full Windows 8.1 OS. Even the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 couldn't quite manage that feat.

We’ll probably start seeing the first Intel Core M-powered laptops and tablets at the turn of the year.

Asus flips out

Asus Transformer Book V

As we’ve already hinted at, no one takes Computex quite as seriously as Asus. This year’s event saw another stack of Asus devices announced, the most interesting of which was the crazy 5-in-1 Asus Transformer Book V.

Yes, you read that right. The Transformer Book V is a 12.5-inch laptop that runs both Windows 8.1 and Android (that’s two), which can also be converted into a tablet form factor for either OS (that’s four), and which also slots a 5-inch Android smartphone into the back (that's five, and relax).

Asus wasn’t finished with the funky form factors either, as it unveiled the Asus Transformer Book Flip. {/pullquote}This Windows 8.1 laptop comes in 15.6-inch and 13.3-inch models, and has the uncanny ability to flip its screen right the way around, turning it into a somewhat flabby tablet.{/pullquote} A flablet, if you will.

It’s a similar concept to last year’s Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13, which we rather liked.

Asus also unveiled a new high-end 15.6-inch laptop called the Zenbook NX500. Yes, it comes with a 15.6-inch 4K display, an Intel Core i7 CPU, and a GeForce GTX 850M GPU - all in a premium 19mm-thick body. But that body only features the one form factor. They just weren’t trying with this one, were they?

The manufacturer also showed off the 'world’s largest’ 32-inch curved monitor prototype. We’re not talking curved to the extent of some recent TV sets, like the Samsung UE55H8000, but rather a gentle concave effect suitable for close-up viewing.

With a 2560 x 1440 4K resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, this could be the ultimate monitor for media-heads, assuming it makes it to retail that is.

Meanwhile, connectivity fiends may be interested to learn of Asus’s new RT-AC3200 wireless router. Yes, we used the words "interested" and "wireless router" in the same sentence.

This bad boy looks pretty impressive though, sporting six antennae for speeds of up to 3,200 Mbps. That’s fast. It’ll even intelligently modify your wireless coverage when needed, too.

Acer makes tracks

Acer Liquid Leap

The other big native company at Computex 2014 was, of course, Acer. Wisely steering clear of a direct face-off with Asus, it spent much of the show focusing on more singular and small form factors.

The Acer Liquid Leap is the company’s new fitness tracker with a 1-inch elongated display. Think the Samsung Gear Fit, with a similar ability to take calls and receive SMS messages besides monitoring your running program.

Moving up the smart device food chain, Acer also used the show to unveil five new smartphones. Chief among these is the premium-specced Acer Liquid X1, with a 5.7-inch display, a 1.7GHz octa-core CPU, and a 13-megapixel rear camera.

Acer isn’t exactly an established name in smartphones, of course, but it does appear to be thinking of common problems in a relatively fresh way. For example, Acer Zoom Fit shrinks the UI to a corner of the display for single-handed usage, while Acer RAPID is a physical button on the back of the device that’s dedicated to quick-launching your most-used apps.

Elsewhere, Acer pushed the Liquid Jade forward as the world’s "most compact 5-inch smartphone." With a slim body (6.8mm at its narrowest point) and a near edge-to-edge display, we can see why they might suggest that. Otherwise, it’s a pretty unremarkable mid-range phone headed for parts of Europe and Asia later this year.

All in the wrist

Watch battery

As we’ve just discussed, thanks to Acer, at least some of Computex 2014's focus has been on the smartwatch format.

Of course, one of the biggest drawbacks with early smartwatch efforts has been battery life. We expect out wrist watches to last a great deal longer than our phones, and the likes of the Sony Smartwatch 2 and the Samsung Gear 2 just don't.

Computex 2014 provided one possible solution to this. ProLogium was on hand to show off an intriguing product that sees flexible lithium-ceramic power cells built into a smartwatch strap.

Current iterations are good for an extra 300mAh of power, but ProLogium reckons it could extend that to 500mAh. That’s not a lot in smartphone terms, but it would be good enough to effectively double the battery life of a Pebble smartwatch.

They’re completely safe, too, so any tampering or damage won’t result in melted wrists. All very promising.

Dell on unfamiliar ground

US computer giant also used Computex 2014 to launch a couple of new devices.

Following Asus’s lead with the Asus Transformer Book Flip, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 is another laptop-tablet hybrid that can twist itself around in all sorts of funny positions.

The Dell Inspiron 20, meanwhile, drops the keyboard dock. But that’s not to say it’s a traditional tablet by any means. In fact, it’s a huge 19.5-inch all-in-one PC that’s designed to be carried between rooms rather than between coffee shops.

It runs Windows 8.1, and can be folded flat or propped up like a monitor.

So that's it, the highlights of Computex 2014. The next major show on the tech calendar is E3 2014 and we will be on the show floor in LA to bring you all the latest so stay tuned to TrustedReviews for the gaming goings on.

Amazon phone to use Omron 3D face tracking technology

The Amazon phone will use Omron 3D face tracking technology, according to a new report.

Amazon is due to launch its first smartphone on June 18 and all rumours and official teasers point to it featuring rather unique 3D user interface technology.

The latest report from TechCrunch suggests Amazon will use Omron’s Okao Vision 3D face sensing technology that will track your head as it moves.

Apparently an internal team at Amazon has modified the Japanese company’s technology to deliver 3D effects from a normal LCD screen.

The special Omron technology will allow you tilt or your smartphone from side to side in order to access additional side panels.

This effect is created by four front-facing cameras located at each corner of the screen, with the Okao face tracking software detecting your face’s location via the stereo-aligned cameras.

Amazon’s phone features a gyroscope and accelerometer, which should aid a faster response for the Okao technology as well as increased power efficiency and accuracy.

If you were thinking it was going to be something like the 3D tech features in the Nintendo 3DS, it looks like the Amazon phone won’t be affected by so many limiting factors.

Sources suggest that the 3D UI functionality will be limited at launch, perhaps limited to several main apps with more added later.

The Amazon phone itself will run a heavily modified version of Android, similar to that offered by the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX and other own brand tablets.

It is expected to feature a 4.7-inch 720p display and be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 2GB of RAM.

In the future Amazon may well utilise the facial recognition of Omron’s technology, which can pick out facial attributes, gender, ethnicity and age. Reports suggest that Amazon is merely focused on head tracking for the time being.

Vodafone reveals extent of government surveillance

Vodafone has admitted government agencies can track your phone conversations and location without search warrants using special cables.

The network provider has published its first Law Enforcement Disclosure Report, which details how the goverments in different locations across the world are capable of spying on its citizens.

Apparently, secret wires are connected to the networks of Vodafone and other network providers to give governments the ability to tap into broadband and phone traffic.

Vodafone goes so far as to say that in many countries it is actually mandatory for telecoms companies to provide this ability to government agencies.

“These pipes exist, the direct access model exists”, said Stephen Deadman, Vodafone’s privacy officer to the Guardian. “We are making a call to end direct access as a means of government agencies obtaining people’s communication data.”

“Without an official warrant, there is no external visibility. If we receive a demand we can push back against the agency. The fact that a government has to issue a piece of paper is an important constraint on how powers are used.”

Of the 29 countries Vodafone currently operates in, each one has different laws demanding direct access to information about customers.

“In our view, it is governments – not communications operators – who hold the primary duty to provide greater transparency on the number of agency and authority demands issued to operators,” said Vodafone.

However, Vodafone did add that refusing to comply with these laws is “not an option”, as the countries could then stop them operating within that location.

“If we do not comply with a lawful demand for assistance, governments can remove our licence to operate, preventing us from providing services to our customers.”

Nine of the 29 countries already disclose the aforementioned information, including the UK, US and Italy. Apparently the UK government made 2760 interception requests and 514,608 communications data requests to mobile operators in 2013.

Several countries refuse to reveal their request numbers though, including South Africa, Turkey, India, Egypt and Qatar.

“It is possible to learn a great deal about an individual’s movements, interests and relationsips from an analysis of metadata,” added Vodafone in the report. “In many countries, agencies and authorities therefore have legal powers to order operators to disclose large volumes of this kind of communications data.”

Battlefield Hardline release date confirmed as October 21

EA has jumped the E3 2014 gun, confirming that the Battlefield Hardline release date will be held on October 21.

With the game set to be one of the highlights of next week’s LA-based conference, the Battlefield Hardline release date has been confirmed within the game’s first official trailer.

Highlighting the title’s inner-city cops vs robbers style foundations, the official Battlefield Hardline trailer, dubbed Battlefield Hardline: Into the Jungle, has been released following multiple leaks in recent days.

Despite the game being set for a large-scale unveiled during EA’s E3 press conference on June 9, the premature unveiling has helped draw focus to the upcoming arrival without the background noise of dozens of other high-profile gaming announcements.

The October 21 Battlefield Hardline release date will see the title hit retailers a full two weeks ahead of the rival CoD: Advanced Warfare touches down.

The game will be available for the usual platforms, with Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4 and PS3 gamers all set to be offered Hardlines.

A PC edition of the game will also be available on day one.

With further Battlefield Hardlines details to be unveiled next week, keep it locked to TrustedReviews for all the latest insights and breaking news, direct from the E3 show floor.

Apple iWatch again tipped for September unveiling

Having failed to surface during WWDC this week, latest reports have once again suggested that an Apple iWatch release date will be held this September.

The subject of multiple leaks and countless rumours, the iWatch is widely expected to land this autumn alongside the upcoming iPhone 6 release date, with industry analysts now adding further backing to these claims.

Citing unnamed sources from within Apple’s supply chain, Cantor Fitzgerald analyst and serial tipster Brian White has suggested that the iWatch will be formally unveiled alongside the new Apple handset at a dedicated event this September.

“With the theme around wearable technology at Computex this year, our research has uncovered more data points as it relates to Apple’s ‘iWatch’,” White said in a note to investors.

“Our meeting with a tech supply chain company highlighted that initial production of certain ‘iWatch’ components is scheduled to begin later this month and there are plans for a sharp acceleration into the fall.”

He added: “Given the trajectory of this ramp and our experience analysing other product ramps at Apple, we expect the ‘iWatch’ to be unveiled with the iPhone 6 in September.

“Since our research suggests the first iteration of the ‘iWatch’ is more of a companion device, and thus requires a connection to an iPhone, we believe unveiling the two new devices at the same time makes sense.”

Although White has failed to offer any new details on the potential iWatch specs sheet, recent reports have suggested the timepiece could feature a round touchscreen display, similar to that on the upcoming Motorola Moto 360.

With iOS 8 having been unveiled earlier this week with the new HealthKit hub and Health app, it is also expected that the sensor filled iWatch will feature a heavy fitness and wellbeing tilt with possible tie-ins being made with sportswear giant Nike.

iPhone 6 cases leak, show 4.7- and 5.5-inch sizes

A set of iPhone 6 cases have been leaked online, showing the two potential sizes ahead of any official announcement.

Rumour has it that Apple will launch two variants of the iPhone 6 later this year, both featuring a new redesign with slimline body and curved edges.

From what we’ve heard so far, the first 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will be launched in September and then the larger screen 5.5-inch version will supposedly arrive a little later.

These sizes were tipped by a set of leaked schematics, which detailed the potential 6mm thick body.

The latest case leaks, spotted by BGR, shows the pair of iPhone sizes and apparently accurately represent the final designs of both models, although we are far from convinced.

The pink silicone case is intended for the 4.7-inch and the clear hard plastic version is supposedly for the 5.5-inch model.

In the photos below, the tipster has even provided an iPhone 5S for scale, as well as placing the cases next to items like water bottles and Starbuck coffee cups.

The 4.7-inch inch model is a little wider than iPhone 5S and noticeably taller thanks to the iPhone 6’s larger screen. The iPhone 5S has a 4-inch 1136 x 640p resolution display, so Apple will have to keep the phone’s bezels very slim in order to accommodate the larger screen without making the overall design much bigger.

At WWDC earlier this month, Apple launched iOS 8. The iPhone 6 is expected to be one of the first devices to run this new mobile operating system, which will introduce new functionality like the fitness tracking Health app, third-party keyboard and Touch ID support.

Currently iOS 8 has been scheduled for an autumn release, so it’s looking more and more likely the iPhone 6 will arrive in September, as per Apple’s usual launch timeline.

TVs for the World Cup: How to pick the best TV for watching football

How to buy an awesome TV for the 2014 World Cup

Thinking of investing in a new TV for the World Cup? You are not alone. Finding the perfect one to watch England in Brazil is not as simple as just buying the biggest set with the brightest screen to plant into your living room.

So, once you’ve finished placing the last shiny in your sticker album and put the wall chart up, here are the key things to look out for when buying a TV for this summer’s tournament, starting with some of the bigger questions you need to decide on before you start looking.

What size TV should you buy?Divider

The bigger the better if you want to increase your sense of ‘being there’. We’d say a 46-inch TV would be our minimum, but if you’ve got a really small room you could perhaps go for 40-42-inch to get the ideal viewing distance. It's worth bearing in mind that the best quality pictures and most features tend to be on these bigger screens, too.

The general rule to get the perfect size TV is that you should sit 1.5 times the diagonal measurement of your TV. This means if you sit six-feet (72-inches, or two metres) from your TV, 46-inches or so is good. It’s just a rough guideline, though, so don’t get too obsessed about it.

football tv guide 2

Is 3D worth bothering with?Divider

At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Sony and FIFA made a great push to broadcast 25 matches from the tournament in 3D. Four years on there’s clearly not the same appetite from TV manufacturers and broadcasters as 3D has been given the cold shoulder for Brazil 2014 coverage.

The BBC recently announced it was taking a three-year break from 3D broadcasting and with just a week to go FIFA has been quiet on 3D broadcasting for this year’s tournament.

It’s very apparent that 3D will not be playing a major part in World Cup 2014 broadcasting so, if you are wondering whether to go for passive or active 3D, you needn’t worry about it.

football tv guide 3

What about 4K?Divider

There is a greater appetite for 4K, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to run out and get one. After trialling 4K filming at the Confederations Cup last year, Sony and FIFA confirmed back in April 2014 that a range of matches, including the final, will be captured in Ultra High definition.

Which sounds great, but no World Cup matches will be actually broadcast live in 4K and the footage will instead be used for the official FIFA film, which will be released through FIFA’s 4K online platforms. BBC has also announced it is trialling live 4K broadcasts for three World Cup matches although none will be shown in public or transmitted to homes.

If you are still set on getting that 4K feeling you’ll need to invest in a 4K TV or monitor and luckily you can find some great options in our round-up of the best monitors and best 4K TVs.

Curved or not curved?Divider

The next big debate in TV, Samsung and LG are currently the only two manufacturers to embrace curved TV screens. Some of the claimed benefits include creating a greater a sense of depth and immersion, improved contrast performance compared to ‘non-curved’ screens all of which are beneficial for a big group of you huddled around a TV.

It has its downsides as well, like the that fact that you have to have a big curved screen to truly appreciate the benefits of curved TV, you need to be in the sweet spot to get the best experience and last but by no means least, they are not cheap.

It’s still too early to say whether they are more than a gimmick, but from our experience so far with sets like the LG 55EA980W and the Samsung UE55H8000, it’s still been a positive one.

football tv guide 1

What about Smart TV?Divider

Having a Smart TV is not essential for your World Cup viewing and in fairness, most TVs now support connected features to access on-demand channels like BBC iPlayer or internet services like Twitter.

As part of BBC’s World Cup coverage, there will be catch-up content and its World Cup Rewind service to watch classic matches through the BBC Sport app. Currently Smart TVs from Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Philips and Sony all offer access to the application, among hundreds of other apps.

If for some reason the TV you go for doesn’t include Smart TV support this can easily be rectified as long as you have a spare HDMI port and an internet connection. Just buy a Google Chromecast dongle or Roku Streaming stick, two simple products that cost less than £50.

What makes a good TV for watching football?Divider

So those are some of the bigger issues, but what should you look for when buying a TV specifically for watching football (and other sports) at home? Mostly they're the same things that make a good, general TV, but these two factors are particularly important.

Smooth, blur-free motion

Motion is one of the most important things. When Spain is playing its mesmerizing tiki-taka, spraying the ball from one man to the next, you need a TV with a fast enough response time and a high refresh rate to be able to ‘keep up’. Otherwise you’ll end up with blurring and fuzziness.

Plasma used to make the most compelling argument due to its faster native response times compared to LCD TVs, but the latter has closed the gap. An LCD TV like the Samsung UE40F8000 (link) for instance has a 100HZ refresh rate to keep action looking smooth while offering exceptional contrast levels, deep blacks and detailed images.

When in the shops, look closely at the ball in demo footage and see whether it ‘shimmers’ or has a ghost like shadow. The best TVs don’t have this, or are noticeably better than lesser TVs.

Loud and clear dialogue

The other, oft-neglected, feature to look out for on a new World Cup-enhancing TV is sound quality. The trend towards ever greater slimness makes it difficult for most TVs to produce any real power and range with their audio, yet being able to accompany the sporting action with the sound of the crowd can really enhance your involvement with the action.

With this in mind, we’d recommend looking for screens that either have a bit of frame size to them, giving their speakers room to manoeuvre, or else TVs that use a separate woofer on their rears to boost bass and take some of the burden of the main stereo speakers, all of which should help ensure you can hear the commentary as well as the atmosphere.

Something like the 65-inch Sony KDL-65X9005B 4K TV for example has six front-facing speakers to deliver the best sound we’ve heard on a flat panel TV while at the other end of the spectrum the sub-£1000 Panasonic TX-L50E6 delivers a well-rounded, audio performance.

You can also consider looking at a soundbar or soundplate, which sits underneath a TV to produce a richer, more satisfying audio experience.

Best World Cup TVs: TrustedReviews RecommendsDivider

With all the above considered, we've picked out some our top picks for the best world cup TVs below. There are more, of course, but choose any of the above and you're guaranteed an enjoyable few weeks of football views, unless you're an England fan of course.

Best TV for World Cup under £500: Sony KDL-42W705B

World Cup TVs 1

Well it's not strictly under £500, but it's going for around £519 on Amazon still making this 42-inch set great value for money and ideal for watching football. It offers good motion handling thanks to Sony’s Motionflow X200 motion processing which produces a 200Hz refresh rate. Black level response means dark scenes are rendered superbly well for a TV so should be ideal for those late evening kick offs.

There’s built-in Wi-Fi to access features like Social View to view scrolling tiers of Twitter feeds and a dedicated Football mode that changes the picture settings to suite football viewing while also providing shortcuts to football-related YouTube content, the FIFA World Cup History site and Sony’s own One Stadium football website. Sound is better than your average super-skinny TV but it might be worth considering an external soundbar to ramp things up in the audio department.

Price: £600 (£519 from Amazon)

Best TV for World Cup under £1,000: Samsung UE40F8000

World Cup TVs

A 40-inch TV we scored a full 10 out of 10 score, it's since dropped below £1,000 making it even more of a great buy. Super slim frame and thin bezel aside, it has a healthy four HDMIs, three USBs and built-in Wi-Fi to get access to Samsung's great Smart TV platform.

You can expect outstanding contrast and sharpness performance to make sure the action comes out nice and clear with 100HZ motion rate giving it the kind of motion handling system that makes it standout from the LCD TV crowd. Considering the slim frame, the 40W down-facing speaker system also blasts rich audio which should save you shelling out extra on an expensive soundbar or surround sound system.

Price: £1,449 (£999 from Richer Sounds)

Add in the brilliant speakers included from last year’s model and extras like a built-in camera for Skype video calls to gloat about the results and although expensive, this Sony TV is worth every penny.

Prototype 4K Samsung tablet spotted in the wild

Samsung 4K tablet

Is this Samsung's first 4K tablet?

Samsung could be about to trump the iPad Air and launch a tablet with a 4K display, latest reports have suggested.

Although Panasonic has already brought a 4K tablet to market with a frankly ridiculous 20-inch display, a prototype of Samsung’s 4K portable offering has been spotted doing the rounds in France with a far more consumer friendly 12-inch panel.

Spotted at a Qualcomm event in Paris, the prototype 4K Samsung tablet has been shown pairing a 12-inch 4K screen with the company’s trademark design, with a bezel-heavy plastic build partnered with the customary physical home button.

Running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, the teased tablet is said to be nothing more than a developer reference device. That said, it could also give a serious nod to what the Korean manufacturer is planning for future devices.

With Qualcomm set to introduce its 4K enabled Snapdragon 805 chipset later this summer, the company’s Senior VP of Product Management, Raj Talluri has suggested that 4K tablets will be widely available before the year’s end.

Although Samsung is set to host a high-profile tablet launch event in New York City next Thursday, June 12, it is not believed the company will enter the 4K tablet race this soon.

Instead, next week’s launch looks set to focus on a new range of Samsung Tab S devices, a premium tablet line that will echo the flagship Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone in terms of design and high-end specs.

With a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date having been tipped for September 3 with an "all new form factor" in tow, latest reports have suggested that the upcoming phablet will be forced to share the launch limelight with a new wearable.According to recent claims, it has been suggested that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date will be shared with the arrival of a Samsung Gear 3 smartwatch. Although there are few details currently available on the mooted wearable, it has been reported that the third-generation watch could come bundled with the Note 4.

The Note 4 release date had been widely tipped to be held in early September, and now an unnamed 'insider' has been cited in reports suggesting the Galaxy S5 sibling will be formally unveiled in the days leading up to IFA 2014.

Although Samsung has remained quiet on exactly what this "new form factor" will entail, the company's confirmation of a refreshed design has sparked much speculation around more premium materials or even a flexible display being included.

Having confirmed plans for a revised design, Yoon Han-kil, Senior Vice President of Samsung’s Product Strategy Team stated: “Our ultimate goal is to make products that consumers really aspire to have. This is how we are trying to find a breakthrough in the stagnant premium market.”

Showing off this "new form factor", new Samsung patents have surfaced revealing a phone with a curved, three sided display (shown below).

According to KDB Daewoo Securities analyst Song Jong-ho: “The bent device is the first step towards testing the market and gauging how it would react to its foldable smartphones that are to be unveiled in the second half of next year."

He added: “The foldable phone would be the next Samsung flagship phone.”

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Having helped spawn the phablet market, the Galaxy Note brand continues to grow in popularity, with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date generating plenty of expectation.

What’s more, with the Samsung Galaxy S5 failing to surprise many with its incremental updates, the Note 4 could be about to become Samsung’s true flagship phone with a larger, higher resolution screen, new CPU and improved usability features all tipped for inclusion.

We will be updating this page with all the latest Samsung Galaxy Note release date details, leaks, news and rumours as new information emerges, so bookmark it now to stay on top of all things Note 4.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Release Date: When will it come out?

Based on Samsung’s unwavering product cycles, a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date looks all but certain to follow an IFA 2014 unveiling this September – a timeframe tipped by Korean sources.

With the Berlin-based tech show to be held between September 5 and 10 – with press days preceding the public show – we anticipate that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will be formally showcased for the first time on Wednesday, 3rd September - this date has now been tipped by claimed insiders.

Although Samsung has yet to offer any official indication of a precise Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date, Samsung’s Mobile Chief, Lee Young Hee reportedly informed news house Bloomberg earlier this year that the gadget would land during the second half of 2014 – a window that would fit with an IFA showing.

With a Q4 release likely to follow a late Q3 unveiling, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 could land within weeks of the iPhone 6, a handset expected to hit retailers during the first week of October.

Despite being one of the company's biggest announcments of the year, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 could be set to share the launch stage. According to recent leaks, the Note 4 will be unveiled alongside the manufacuter's answer to Google Glass.

A head-mounted werable with a single-sided display that will sit in front of the user's eye, the Samsung Gear Glass has been repeatedly tipped for an IFA unveiling.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Specs: We expect a new, 'QHD' screen

With the previous trio of Note offerings having jumped from 5.3-inches to 5.5-inches and now 5.7-inches in size, it seems safe to say that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4’s screen is in line for another size increase.

Surprisingly there are currently no rumours circulating around the Note 4 being on the receiving end of another size bump, although we expect the handset to measure up at around 5.8-inch or 5.9-inches in size. Given latest smartphone trends, we would also expect to see this larger display squeezed into a similarly sized body to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, with a reduced bezel helping create space.

More important than size, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 screen is set to get better. Samsung itself has hinted the phone’s display could boast a staggering 2,560 x 1,440 pixel display.

Teasing the future phone features during its annual Analyst Day in Korea last November, Samsung revealed a graph showing that 2014 will see it launch a handset with a WQHD 2560 x 1440p display. Given that the S5 has already passed with a 1080p panel, the Note 4 is left as the likely choice for an improved screen.

Like the S5, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has been tipped to include a fingerprint scanner incorporating home button, with the security measure set to become a staple of the company’s flagship offerings.

Further Samsung Galaxy Note 4 specs tipped to make an appearance include a new 20-megapixel rear-mounted camera, up from the Note 3’s 13-megapixel snapper and S5’s 16-megapixel offering.

According to unnamed Korean insiders: "Samsung Electronics began to develop the 20-megapixel smartphone camera module with a view to releasing it in the second half of 2014."

A 20-megapixel camera would see the Note 4 edge closer to the photographic abilities of the 41-megapixel Nokia Lumia 1020 and the 20.7-megapixel Sony Xperia Z2 cameras.

Qualcomm

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Rumours: Snapdragon 805 processor likely

A number of Samsung Galaxy Note 4 rumours have added further backing to reports the phone will feature a new, near 2K panel.

With Qualcomm having already laid out its chipsets for the next year of smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is all but guaranteed to be powered by the Snapdragon 805 processing unit. The Note 3 followed the LG G2 in running the Snapdragon 800 chipset, a processing unit that has since featured in many high-end handsets.

A chip that will allow for 4K video recording, improved gaming and greater sensor accuracy for improved fitness tracking, according to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 805 will let smartphone users "Enjoy Ultra HD resolution content on Ultra-HD-capable mobile devices."

We also expect Samsung to further improve the handwriting recognition on the Note 4. A new Samsung patent has revealed the manufacturer will introduce advanced handwriting recognition in the next-generation of its Galaxy Note devices.

This will let users write out commands – such as call mum – the handset will reportedly transform your notes into actions. Whether this proves to be an easier method of making a call than traditional touchscreen menus remains to be seen.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 News: Samsung planning IP67 water and dust resistance

While we all want Samsung to release a premium looking, metal bodied handset in a similar vein to the iPhone 5S or HTC One M8, this isn’t looking likely to be the Note 4.

According to recent reports the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will, like the Galaxy S5 before it, feature a dust and water-resistant coating, which means plastic is most likely going to be the material of choice.

Reports out of the Korean media have claimed the Note 4 will host the same IP67 rating as the S5, meaning it can be submerged in up to one metre of water for 30 minutes without suffering damage. If handed a water-resistant coating, the phone’s USB power connection port will be covered by a protective flap.

Adding further backing to reports of a water-resistant Note 4, serial tipster ETNews has claimed Samsung recently cancelled an order for 5 million LDS (Laser Direct Structuring) antenna in order to snap up H-IMA (High-performance In-Mold Antenna) units, a component reportedly easier to waterproof.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Price: How much will you have to pay?

When it comes to price, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is not going to be cheap, not by a long shot. Although likely to feature a less than premium aesthetic, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is likely to be northwards of £600 at launch.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 cost £649 at launch, and with new features inbound, we expect the Galaxy Note 4 price will be at a similar level.

Kinect for Windows v2 available for pre-order

Microsoft’s second generation Kinect for Windows is now available for pre-order. The first units will ship on July 15.

The first limited batch of Kinect for Windows v2 devices has been put up on the Microsoft Store website, along with pricing details. It will cost £159 here in the UK, and $199 in the US.

It’s been more than two years since the first Kinect for Windows sensor bar launched, offering Windows users the chance to control their games and select apps without a controller.

Kinect for Windows v2 is based on the second generation unit that was, until recently, packaged with every Xbox One console.

It offers a host of improvements such as a much sharper 1080p camera capable of picking up even more detail, infrared technology for low-light operation, and vastly improved response times. The new Kinect also features four microphones for picking up voice commands more accurately.

Kinect for Windows v2 will plug into your PC via USB 3.0, and requires a hub box and a separate power supply to run.

"The Kinect for Windows v2 sensor gives developers more of the precision, responsiveness, and intuitive capabilities they need to develop interactive voice and gesture-based applications," said Microsoft on a recent blog post.

Developers will be able to use Kinect for Windows v2 in conjunction with the Kinect for Windows SDK 2.0 to create Windows Store apps with Kinect functionality for the first time. This new SDK will be launched as a public beta in July.

While this initial batch appears to be a limited run aimed at developers, Microsoft claims that the device will be "available for general purchase later this year."

iOS 8 Safari can input credit card details using camera

Scan

iOS 8 Safari credit card scan

It’s been discovered that the new version of Safari in iOS 8 can use the iPhone’s or the iPad’s camera to scan in credit card details for payment services.

Following Apple’s WWDC keynote at the beginning of the week, numerous additional iOS 8 features have emerged. It’s pretty packed.

One of the latest to emerged comes via 9to5Mac, who have discovered a nifty new labour-saving tool within the latest Safari web browser. It allows users to scan in their credit card details rather than typing them in.

Now, when entering a credit card number into an online form, such as an Amazon purchase, you’ll be offered the choice to "Scan Credit Card." Use your device’s camera to snap your card of choice, and Apple’s optical character recognition will automatically pull out the relevant information and put it into the correct fields. Clever.

It seems web developers won’t have to do anything to enable this feature - Safari detects when it’s needed and presents the option above the keypad.

It’s one of many new features added to Safari alone. Also new is the ability to request full desktop websites, a vastly improved tab view for iPad users, improved speed, greater synchronisation with OS X Safari, and more.

iOS 8 is available as a developer beta now, but will officially launch in the autumn around the time of Apple's big iPhone 6 reveal.

Ransomware coming to an Android phone near you soon

CryptoLocker type viruses are nasty, they are designed to extort money from you and they do this by encrypting your files so you pay, or lose everything. And now, a similar virus has arrived on Android.

Called Simplocker, it's not as nasty as the PC variants, and it can only encrypt files on your microSD card, rather than your phone's file system. As with the Windows viruses, users would need to pay a ransom to get access to their files. This is usually done via a Bitcoin transfer, as these are far harder to trace by law enforcement.

The virus, according to Antivirus company ESET, has been discovered on a Tor domain, which is often where such nefarious things lurk. The virus leaks data back to the author too, including the phone's IMEI number. So far the firm has only seen the virus in Russian, but that doesn't mean it won't rear its ugly head elsewhere in the future.

There are several virus threats to Android devices. Most are pretty unsophisticated though, like lockscreens and pop-up messages warning that your phone has been used to look at porn, and as such is blocked by the police. The goal is always the same though, to get users to cough up some money to get away from the problem.

Did the official Android Twitter account just leak the Nexus 6?

There have been rumours that the Nexus range would be coming to an end, and there have been rumours that there will be a Nexus 6 this summer at some point. But perhaps we'll see one sooner than that, if this image is of a new phone.

The promotional tweet that was designed to promote a new feature in Google Now - the ability to see recipe checklists while shopping - revealed a new-looking phone. Of course, it's not unusual to see a phone that's a rendered mock-up in adverts, but when Google has handsets like the Nexus 5 it seems surprising.

What's interesting about the phone shown is that it's not any model currently on the market. It seems to have a large screen, and virtually no edge bezel at all. Obviously, the screen is simulated, so there's no way to see real details about what sort of panel it might be, or if it's a quad-HD screen.

If there is to be a new Nexus handset this year, then there's a vague chance it could be based upon the LG G3. LG has been the company behind the previous two nexus phones, so it has an arguably better chance of knowing how to pitch a new handset to Google. If that's the case, we'd expect a spec similar to the LG G3, but sold for a lower price with perhaps some features missing. Google, for example, despises microSD and has no time for removable batteries, so it's very possible those two things would be stripped out.

And, it goes without saying that Google I/O is at the end of the month too, so if there was a new handset coming, that could be the time it's announced. That said, Google hasn't announced hardware at I/O for a while, as it is a developer conference, not a press-focused launch event.

Project Tango tablet developer kit launched

Google has launched the official Project Tango tablet developer kit, powered by Nvidia’s Tegra K1 processor.

This insanely powerful Project Tango tablet is only for developers for now, but this cutting-edge prototype gives us a glimpse at the future of mobile 3D sensing.

The tablet features a 7-inch display of unknown resolution, powered by the powerful Nvidia Tegra K1 processor and 4GB of RAM.

It runs the latest Android 4.4 KitKat and offers Wi-Fi and 4G LTE connectivity, but it’s the other internal hardware that really sets this slate apart from other tablets.

The front-facing camera has a 120-degree viewing angle and an additional 4-megapixel rear camera with 2 micrometre pixels, which is the same as the HTC One M8 UltraPixel sensor.

In the back there’s also a motion-tracking rear camera and an depth sensor that combine to create the interior 3D mapping.

“Fast-forwarding Google’s Project Tango from experimental device to developer kit, the tablet incorporates cameras optimised for computer vision, advanced sensor fusion algorithms and integrated depth sensing tools, as well as the Nvidia Tegra K1 mobile processor,” explained Nvidia. “As a result, it can understand space and motion the way humans do, enabling interior spaces to be quickly mapped in three dimensions, allowing the creation of applications that blend real and virtual objects.”

Google has opened up the register your interest page for the Project Tango tablet developer kit, but you’ll need to be a developer and fork out $1024 (£610) to get your hands on one.

“These developer kits are not a consumer device and will be available in limited qualities,” said Google.

Beats: Audio is the ‘bastard step child’ of the TV market

As TV visuals continue to improve with the birth of 4K sets, sound specialist Beats has bemoaned the state of audio in the TV space.

Claiming that sound quality has been overlooked in a bid to focus on improved visuals and ever slimmer panels, Beats President and COO Luke Wood has described audio as the ‘bastard step child’ of the TV market.

Question on whether Beats is looking at ways to improve audio performances in the TV market, Wood, speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews, stated: “Yeah. I think it is an area where every audio company is focused.”

He added: “It is very similar to what has happened around tablets and around computers. As the screens have become smaller – and the focus is always more on display – audio is like the bastard step child that everyone ignores until the last.

Detailing the audio issues which have befallen the TV space, Wood pointed out how the constant push for slimmer televisions has forced audio quality to diminish.

“There is an absolutely fetishistic desire in the TV business to get the screen as thin as humanly possible,” he told us. “For audio you need to push air and you need room for the transducer and you need space. The two are kind of at diabolical opposite ends.”

Although the Beats head would not be drawn on any specific future product plans, questioned on where the company can expand next, he stated, as part of an expansive list of possibilities, “TVs and soundbars are important.”

He added: “I think this needs to be solved and I think every consumer wants it to be solved.

“The concept with TVs is that people would put the TV in and then get a soundbar or have a home theatre, but the truth is a lot of people just put the TV in. It is a lot to ask for consumers to figure out an audio solution that is quite technical. I think you need to simplify it and give them something elegant and easy.”
