Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update reportedly on the horizon

Despite the Samsung Galaxy S5 being just days from launch, latest reports have suggested a Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update is being readied for release.

One of ten Samsung handsets reportedly set to be on the receiving end of an Android 4.4 KitKat update, the Samsung Galaxy S3 could join the more recent Samsung Galaxy S4 in running Google’s latest mobile OS, according to a leaked Samsung update roadmap.

Despite having been tipped to be in the works, no timeframe has yet been given for when the Samsung Galaxy S3 update will be introduced.

Surfaced through Android blog, Phandriod, the leaked Samsung update roadmap has suggested the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be joined by the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom in joining the KitKat-themed movement.

Citing “a source close to the matter,” the newly surfaced reports have claimed the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Samsung Galaxy Mega will also be updated.

Not limited solely to smartphones, it has been claimed the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablets will also be on the receiving end of Google’s latest OS.

With the Android 4.4 KitKat update having only recently started a rollout to owners of the flagship Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 handsets, we anticipate quite a wait before the likes of the S3 are updated.

Optoma HD91 Projector Review

What is the Optoma HD91?

Once upon a time LED lighting looked set to become the next big thing in home cinema projection. But then difficulties making LED projectors affordably saw the tech quietly slip away again. Until now, that is. That's because perched on our projector stand is the Optoma HD91: a single-chip DLP projector with a tri-LED light source that’s going for just £2,999. It's a breakthrough price for an LED projector, one that makes the Optoma HD91 a seriously interesting proposition.

Optoma HD91

Optoma HD91: Design and Features

Other LED-based home cinema projectors we’ve seen have tended to be brutishly large. So it’s nice to see the HD91 sporting very living room-friendly dimensions entirely in keeping with - if not actually slightly smaller than - the norm at its level of the projection market.

It’s solidly built too, with a surprisingly large and apparently high quality lens sticking forward from the centre of the elliptical front edge. The black, smooth finish and use of lots of curves and rounded edges, meanwhile, give it a fairly sleek overall feel that doesn’t look at all out-of-place in a domestic environment.

There aren’t any control buttons on the chassis, which could become problematic if you lose the remote control. But not having any buttons does contribute to the design’s minimalist appeal.

Optoma has also done a pleasingly discreet job of incorporating cooling vents into the HD91, though it’s probably helped in this regard by the fact that LED lamps generally need less cooling than standard projection lamps.

Connections are impressively extensive. As well as the standard two HDMIs (both built to the V1.4 standard in recognition of the fact that the HD91 can handle active 3D) you get a component video input, a composite video input, a D-Sub PC port, a 9-pin RS-232 control port for system integration, two USB ports (one for service use only and one for powering other devices), not one but two 12V trigger ports, and a socket for attaching an external 3D transmitter. Sadly, if hardly surprisingly, neither this 3D emitter nor any of Optoma’s rechargable 3D glasses are included free with the projector.

This wealth of jacks illustrates clearly Optoma’s ambitions for the HD91 - namely for it to be widely adopted by the relatively affordable end of the custom installation scene.

Other features of the projector that underline these ambitions will be covered in the Set Up section.

Optoma HD91

Before that, though, it’s high time we got into reminding ourselves why LED lighting is so potentially exciting in an affordable home cinema context. First of all, LED lamps have a massively higher life span than typical projection lamps. We’re talking a quoted 20,000 hours (though it’s likely it’ll go beyond that) versus between 2,000 and 5,000 hours with a UHP-style lamp.

What’s more, unlike normal lamps, which lose considerable brightness over time, LED light levels stay much more consistent throughout their lifespan. Though please note that when the LEDs in the HD91 do eventually die, you won’t be able to replace them. In other words, the lamp life is to all intents and purposes the projector’s life.

Next, by using one LED for each of the red, green and blue colour elements the HD91 doesn’t need a colour wheel, which means there should be far, far less opportunity for its DLP engine to generate the so-called ‘rainbow effect’ RGB striping nuisance than you get with traditional DLP designs.

Finally in the plus column, using LEDs lets you (almost) instantly power the HD91 off since there’s no need for the fans to keep cooling the lamp down after shutdown as happens with normal lamps.

We’d add to the simple LED 'facts' listed above a sense from other LED reviews that LED lighting seems to excel at delivering natural colour tones and more colour subtleties than normal lamps, so we’ll be looking for this trend to continue with the HD91.

The HD91 boasts a very promising contrast ratio of 500,000:1 (delivered with the assistance of a dynamic light system), and what looks initially like a rather less impressive 1,000 Lumens output. However, it’s important to point out that you’ll be much more likely to see every bit of this 1,000 Lumens in the HD91’s pictures than you would the quoted lumens of a normal DLP projector, on account of the damage to normal DLP light outputs done by their colour wheel system.

Final things worth mentioning here are that the projector is supported by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) as being a projector with enough set up flexibility to be professionally calibrated, and that it carries a startlingly varied array of picture processing tools. We’ll look into all this in more detail in the Set up section.

Optoma HD91

Optoma HD91: Set Up

In some ways the HD91 is very easy to set up. It’s a manageable size as noted before, and its lens delivers a helpfully large 1.9x optical zoom. The zoom and focus rings around the lens are firm and track accurately enough to enable quite fine movements, and there’s optical vertical image shifting to help you get the picture at the right height without having to use keystone correction (which distorts the image).

However, bizarrely the optical image shift 'wheels' are placed on the projector’s underside, making them much harder to use effectively than they would have been if they’d been placed on the top edge or down the side.

A straightforward onscreen menu system provides access to a wide range of image adjustments, including all the colour, gamma and white balance toolsets required by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF). Though interestingly the ISF presets on the HD91 are only available via the projector’s service menus - presumably to stop amateur tinkerers mucking about with them.

Among the most useful other tools on the HD91 are a wide series of picture presets, an LED brightness adjustment, and the option to attach an anamorphic lens to the HD91 for 'Cinemascope' viewing on a suitably wide-screen. With regard to this latter point, though, it must be stressed that as with the recently tested Epson TW9200, the HD91’s lack of any motorised zoom and focus options prevents it offering any 'lens memory' functionality, where you could set different zoom and focus presets to suit different aspect ratios that the projector could then access at the press of a button.

The settings you most need to take care with when setting your HD91 up are mostly contained within the 'Advanced' settings menu. Here you’ll find Noise Reduction (best left off for HD sources); some gamma presets (including access to curve type and offset adjustments for each preset); colour temperature adjustments (which include our preferred D65 for video viewing); and access to Optoma’s Pure Engine suite of processing tools.

Within the PureEngine stuff are an UltraDetail feature that sharpens the picture (you can us the On mode here, but we’d advise against the HD option, as this over-sharpens everything); a colour booster (which you can try on its one or even two setting if you want saturations to get a little boost without starting to look unnatural); and a PureMotion judder-removal feature that you can use on its Low setting without it causing many negative side effects (though higher power settings are best avoided).

The single most significant feature, though, is the LED brightness suite. This provides three 'DynamicBlack' modes that adjust the projector’s light output automatically in response to image content, as well as a manual brightness adjustment that shifts brightness up or down in 5% increments.

Unfortunately, while the DynamicBlack options deliver the most consistently satisfying contrast performance, as we’ll see in the performance section they cause too many problems to be usable when watching films. So we’re left to suggest that you use the manual LCD brightness setting, reduced to around its 50-60 level for dark room viewing or left up near its 100 maximum if you’ve got ambient light to contend with.

Only 50 per cent of PS4 owners subscribe to PlayStation Plus

Sony has revealed only half of PS4 owners subscribe to PlayStation Plus, despite its obvious benefits.

Speaking during an investor call, PlayStation CEO Kaz Hirai said that only around 2 million PS4 owners have signed up for PlayStation Plus.

“Of all the 4.2 million PS4s that have moved into the hands of consumers, more than half of those people have signed up for the PS Plus service”, said Hirai.

Neither Hirai or Sony CEO Masaru Kato would offer a specific PS4 PlayStation Plus subscription number.

Sony’s previous sales projections of 15 million PS3 and PS4s combined by the end of March still stands, despite sales performance fluctuations.

The PS4 is selling above expectations, but Sony did say that the PS3 sales downturn is more acute than originally predicted.

PlayStation Plus offers access to online multiplayer for PS4. The membership covers all three Sony consoles – PS4, PS3 and PS Vita – and offers game and content discounts as well as access to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game collection.

Every month, the Instant Game Collection offers six games per month to pay for free across the three consoles, which will always be accessible as long as you keep subscribing to PlayStation Plus.

A PlayStation Plus membership costs £5.49 per month, or £11.99 per three months. You can even subscribe for a whole year for £39.99.

Currently the PlayStation Plus games on offer are Outlast, Metro: Last Light, BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2 and ModNation Racers.

Windows Phone 8.1 Cortana voice assistant to use FourSquare data

The Windows Phone 8.1 Cortana voice assistant will utilise FourSquare when it is eventually released next month.

Microsoft recently purchased a $15 million (£9.2 million) stake in FourSquare in order to add restaurant and entertainment suggestions to its Windows Phone range.

This investment will also allow Microsoft to use FourSquare location data for its voice-activated assistant Cortana in Windows Phone 8.1, named after the character from the Halo game series.

Although Cortana has yet to be announced, “a person with knowledge of the plans” said Microsoft’s Cortana aims to be a direct competitor to Apple’s Siri technology, especially as it will be equipped with FourSquare technology.

“This is huge validation for the stuff we’ve been working so hard on,” said FourSquare CEO Dennis Crowley after the Microsoft investment. “It’s one of the leaders in the space we work in looking at us and saying we can really help power the next generation of devices.”

Cortana is heavily rumoured to be a major new feature introduced with Windows Phone 8.1, which is expected to be released within the next few months.

This is based on information from “a person familiar with the project and FourSquare agreement”, who wished to remain anonymous when speaking with Bloomberg.

The FourSquare data would allow Microsoft to push out suggestions, tips and other information like discounts to the user based on their location and settings of course, according to Zig Serafin, a vice president of the Bing search unit at Microsoft.

“We building some contextually aware experiences to power some upcoming products in Windows Phone,” said Serafin, without directly mentioning Cortana. “This will be for anywhere you get a Bing-powered experience.”

Windows Phone 8.1 is expected to be officially unveiled at Microsoft’s Build Conference in April, with rumoured features including a swipe-down notifications centre and a quick settings menu.

Other smaller new features include the likes of separate media playback and ringtone controls, VPN support and Windows 8.1 style Bing Smart Searches.

At least Microsoft has confirmed that all Windows Phone 8 users will be able to download the Windows Phone 8.1 update.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition announced for the UK

Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition

Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition

Despite the Samsung Galaxy S5 release date expected to be just a matter of weeks away, that hasn’t stopped the Korean manufacturer refreshing its outgoing flagship phone as the Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition is announced.

Formally unveiled alongside a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini Black Edition, the refreshed S4 has been confirmed for launch in Russia, with a global rollout to follow in the near future.

Despite landing as a dedicated new model edition, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition has few differences from the standard flagship phone which launched last April.

Ditching the gloss plastic rear that has been the subject of much criticism, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition features an equally unappealing soft-touch, faux leather rear similar to that found on the oversized and stylus hosting Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Aside from the leather effect rear, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition’s only other notable difference is a new, fittingly dark themed homescreen background.

Like the standard S4 offering, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition runs a 5-inch, 1080p Full HD display alongside a 1.9GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

With a 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera and integrated 4G and NFC connectivity options, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition specs sheet is rounded off by a 2600mAh Lithium-Ion battery at Google’s Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS.

With only Russian pricing having been confirmed at this point, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition will set wannabe owners back 22,990 roubles (£400).

Titanfall beta details to be confirmed next week says developer

Ahead of next month’s release, developer Respawn has confirmed that new details on the upcoming Titanfall beta will be announced in the coming days.

With a Titanfall beta set to be made available for ultra-eager Xbox One and PC gamers, the game’s developer has confirmed that further details on the pre-release access will be announced ‘early next week’.

Although Respawn has remained coy on what further details expectant gamers can expect, it is believed the company will reveal when exactly the Titanfall beta will be released and how wannabe users can sign up to gain access to the early look.

Hey, we love all your excitement about the beta, news will be coming early next week!” the developer has teased via its official Twitter feed.

While Respawn has teased the upcoming Titanfall beta, it is not all good news for gaming fans, with publisher EA last night having confirmed that the Titanfall Xbox 360 release is facing a new wave of delays.

With the Xbox One and PC Titanfall release set to hit UK retailers on March 13, the Xbox 360 edition of the game has been pushed back two weeks, with a March 28 launch now being offered to users of Microsoft’s superseded console.

“To give them the time they need to put the finishing touches on the current-gen version of the game, we are moving the Xbox 360 ship date to March 25 in North America and March 28 in Europe,” an official EA statement read.

The spokesperson added: “The extra two weeks will ensure the full world of Xbox gamers have an awesome experience.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook teases “new product categories” to launch in 2014

Apple CEO Tim Cook has teased that we can expect some new product categories from Apple this year.

Following a report published earlier this week, Cook said the company is working on devices that a “reasonable” person would consider new product categories.

Of course, Cook gave very little away in his statement apart from that the company is working on some new products, which may well include the heavily rumoured Apple iWatch and the Apple iTV.

“There will be new categories”, said Cook in an interview with the WSJ. “We’re not ready to talk about it, but we’re working on some really great stuff.”

When pressed further about the new products, Cook didn’t elaborate but said that any “reasonable” person would consider them new product lines for Apple’s portfolio.

One thing Cook did specifically highlight during the interview was Apple’s choice to provide quality over quantity, especially following backlash over the price of the iPhone 5C.

He also suggested that Apple statements about not wanting to produce a huge amount of smartphone models had previously been misconstrued.

“I don’t view that as being satisfied with being small or however you want to define it. I just want to say that the macro thing for us is making a great product and we must do that. If we can’t do that, we’re not going to force ourselves to hit a price point that makes us produce a product that we’re not proud of because we lose who we are in that. We’re not going to do that.”

You can pretty much expect the new hardware not to include any kind of true budget iPhone from that statement.

New products tipped to be launched by Apple this year include the Apple iWatch, its own Apple smart TV currently nicknamed the iTV, and a unique payment system.

Speaking earlier this week, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak defended the company despite no longer being part of its daily workings.

“The great products really come from secret development. You put small teams of great people on them and they aren’t bothered by other people commenting on what they’re doing while they’re doing it”, explained Wozniak. “A whole new product category doesn’t happen very often. It might happen once a decade. Sometimes you have to wait for one of those to come about.”

We reckon Apple is due a fantastic new product this year then.

Watch Dogs release date, news, gameplay and trailer round-up

What is Watch Dogs?

Although there's still no official word on a Watch Dogs release date, we're still very intrigued by how good the game will be when it launches - especially on Xbox One, PS4 and even Wii U.

Watch Dogs is a brand new IP from Ubisoft, the creators of games like Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

Most likely turning out to be a cross between a high-tech GTA 5 and an Assassin’s Creed game, Watch Dogs is set in Chicago in the not-too-distant future.

The game was originally intended to be an Xbox One and PS4 launch title, but was pushed back to 2014 because it wasn’t quite as perfect as Ubisoft wanted.

Now we have to wait until Spring to get our hands on Watch Dogs, but until then we can console ourselves with all the news and gameplay footage we have so far.

Watch Dogs Hands-on from E3 2013

Ubisoft had an extended demo of Watch Dogs available to see behind closed doors at E3 2013, and we were lucky enough to be one of the few to be granted access.

Our first impressions in our hands-on Watch Dogs review were that the architectural detail of Chicago is very realistic and the weather effects are particularly impressive.

“If we have any reservations, it’s that a lot of the game mechanics echo those in the Assassin’s Creed games, though with more emphasis on hacking, surveillance and GTA-style driving, and less on the parkour stuff.”

Watch Dogs Release Date: When is Watch Dogs coming out?

Originally intended to be a launch title for theXbox One and PS4, Ubisoft suddenly delayed the Watch Dogs release date to sometime in Spring 2014.

We’ve yet to hear of a concrete release date for the hacking-based, open world title, but Watch Dogs will launch for Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC as well as the PS4 and Xbox One.

"Our ambition from the start with Watch Dogs has been to deliver something that embodies what we wanted to see in the next-generation of gaming. It is with this in mind that we’ve made the tough decision to delay the release until Spring 2014," said Ubisoft in statement after announcing the delayed release date.

"We know a lot of you are probably wondering, ‘Why now?’ We struggled with whether we would delay the game. But from the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality. As we got closer to release, as all the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place in our last push before completion, it became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune every detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience."

Release Date Update:

According to one online retailer, the Watch Dogs release date could occur in late April. Portugese retailer Fnac posted an April 30 release date for several of the Watch Dogs listings.

This date is a little odd though, as it falls on a Wednesday. However, the site listed April 30 as an expected delivery date, so we could be looking at an Friday April 25 UK release date with the game shipping over the weekend. It could also mean the game is released worldwide on April 29, as games usually launch on a Tuesday in the US.

In fact, at the time of writing (February 7) the retailer is still to change the exstimated delivery date on any of its Watch Dogs listings.

Watch Dogs News: What we know so far

Sony identifies Watch Dogs as a defining next-generation title

Speaking to TrustedReviews, Sony Computer Entertainment Managing Director Fergal Gara said Watch Dogs could be a defining game for next-generation consoles.

"[Watch Dogs could] define next-gen gaming really push some boundaries. A title like Watch Dogs, the anticipation is so high around it; pre-orders are already very significant and very strong for PS4."

Sony has a highly optimistic outlook for Watch Dogs, but the company was still disappointed it couldn’t be release as a launch title for the PS4 and Xbox One.

"It is a slight disappointment [that Watch Dogs has been delayed]. The timing isn’t as we had hoped. We have said we are for the players and we would rather they have a great game slightly later than a good game early."

The PS4 creator also believes that Watch Dogs could be the first in a hugely successful next-gen franchise.

"It would be a terrible shame if a game like that – which could go several rounds, Watchdogs 1, 2, 3 and could define next-gen gaming and really push some boundaries – it would be a shame if a title like that came out and it was only good when it could be great."

Watch Dogs Wii U still in the works despite the cancellation rumours

In late January 2014, word came that GAmeStop was cancelling pre-orders of the Watch Dogs Wii U edition because Ubisoft had made the decision to abandon the game.

Reports emerged that Italian GameStop branches were not only cancelling orders, but also informing customers was because the Wii U Watch Dogs had been scrapped.

Another report from a "reliable Kotaku source" also claims the US GameStop was also cancelling Wii U pre-orders for the game, which heightened the speculation.

However, it turned out that the cancellations were the result of an internal GameStop glitch and not an indication of Ubisoft cancellation. Pre-orders across the world are still in place, and the Italian ones were to be restored within the next 24 hours after their initial abolition.

Rather bizarrely, Ubisoft declined to comment on the suggests the Wii U version of Watch Dogs had been scrapped.

"We have nothing to comment at the moment," said a Ubisoft spokesperson.

In an interview in 2013, Watch Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin said the Wii U version actually looked better than the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions.

"I would say the Wii U version is pretty much in between what the current gen is and what the next gen is from a version standpoint", said Morin in an interview with CVG. "It's hard to position it. i would tend to say it's maybe a bit closer to current gen than next gen for certain things, but it's a beautiful game on the Wii U and it's cool to play it just on the GamePad."

Watch Dogs Storyline: What happens in Watch Dogs?

Watch Dogs is set in Chicago and you play as Aiden Pearce, a highly-competent hacker and former thug. Pearce is seeking justice for a violent family tragedy (similar to Max Payne) and does so by monitoring and hacking those that surround him in the city.

You’ll need to manipulate Chicago’s Central Operating System, known at ctOS as it controls the majority of the city’s technology and information as well as holding data on all the city’s residents.

Manipulating the ctOS can be done via Pearce’s smartphone, meaning you’ll be able to access security cameras, download personal data, control traffic lights and public transport form the palm of your hand to achieve your goals.

Being able to control parts of the ctOS means "the city is our weapon", one of the game’s defining catch phrases.

Ubisoft has created Watch Dogs’ storyline in part as an "homage to humanity".

"You’re going to see mundance, funny situations, see very dark secrets, we really want to make sure we pay homage to humanity, and we’re not critiquing them 100 per cent of the time. That would be bad," explained Ubisoft’s Creative Director, Jonathan Morin.

Watch Dogs – DedSec trailer
:

Watch Dogs Gameplay: What type of game is Watch Dogs?

Watch dogs is a sandbox game that will allow you to explore the various layers of Chicago, from the rooftops down to the city’s dangerous underground system. However, you will have to hack Control Centres in order to access citizen profiles and the ctOS in each district, similar to the towers you have to scale in Far Cry 3 and the Assassin’s Creed series.

"When you’re doing an open world game, I think one of the best practices is to connect your fantasy, the fantasy of the game to the world itself," said Jonathan Morin, Ubisoft’s Creative Director.

"For example, us, we’re talking about monitoring the entire city of Chicago, it makes no sense whatsoever if you don’t have to do something in the world to eventually get access to the system. It’s how it works in real life, and it also connects the player with the world a bit more with its progression."

Watch Dogs will also use a Reputation System that is based on the media’s perception of Pearce and the way the player completes the missions and side quests, including the amount of citizen casualties you wrack up.

"Every time you intervene and how you play, your Reputation is going to sway in different ways, and that’s now going to have an impact on the entire city and [how] they will perceive you,” added Morin. "It’s not a judgement call on how oyu play. There’s a lot more depth in that to our system."

Elements that seem particularly GTA 5-like include the driving sections. Ubisoft partnered with the Ubisoft Reflections studio, responsible for the Driver series, to influence Watch Dogs. Watch Dogs actually features over 65 vehicles each built using a top physics and handling engine.

There has yet to be any playable game demoes at any trade shows in 2013, but there have been several Watch Dogs gameplay trailers released by Ubisoft, which you can enjoy below.

Sledgehammer Games to develop 2014 Call of Duty release

Having working on Modern Warfare 3 back in 2011, Activision has confirmed that Sledgehammer Games has been handed developer duties for the 2014 Call of Duty game.

Making the announcement during its latest product call, Activision has revealed that the Call of Duty franchise has been expanded to a three-year development cycle, with Sledgehammer to launch the 2014 Call of Duty game, a title the company has said will mark “a new era” for the series.

Although having confirmed Sledgehammer as the game’s developer, Activision has yet to officially reveal the name of the 2014 Call of Duty release, or when gamers can expect the title to drop.

"The next Call of Duty represents a new era for this amazing franchise, and we look forward to sharing what we have been working on,” Sledgehammer co-founder Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey teased in an open letter on the company’s website.

"Having the honour of developing the new, next generation of Call of Duty is a developer's dream come true. All of us here at Sledgehammer Games have a shared vision to create the best work of our lives.”

Expanding the franchise’s development window from two years to three means that Tryarch’s rumoured Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 offering will likely not land until 2015, with Infinity Ward now tipped to release a follow-on to last year’s Call of Duty: Ghosts release in 2016.

Having been a stalwart of the gaming scene for a number of years, Activision last year saw the Call of Duty franchise’s gaming records smashed by GTA 5, a game which became the biggest entertainment release of all time, generating $1 billion in just three days.

Nokia X leak suggests 3MP camera and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

The Nokia X phone has appeared on the CamSpeed database with a 3-megapixel camera resolution and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

A listing on the CamSpeed database, the benchmark test of Sofica, has suggested the Nokia X phone will have lower specs than original anticipated.

According to the leak, the first Nokia Android smartphone will feature Android 4.1 Jelly Bean rather than the latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS.

This seems a little strange, as Google latest mobile OS has been specifically designed to run on handsets with memory as low as 512MB of RAM.

Previous rumours suggest the Nokia X Android phone will run on a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 512MB of RAM, which would make the device a perfect candidate for the KitKat OS rather than anything older.

The CamSpeed listing also suggests that the camera resolution is 3-megapixels, despite earlier rumours listing a 5-megapixel rear camera.

The rear camera on the Nokia X should also be fixed focus, with minimal focusing time.

Other Nokia X specs are rumoured to include 4GB of internal memory expanded by a microSD card slot, a 1500mAh battery and dual-SIM slots.

The Nokia X is also tipped to feature a 4-inch 800 x 480p WVGA display.

Originally tipped for an MWC 2014 launch, rumour has it that Nokia is thinking of delaying the Nokia X launch due to the Samsung Galaxy S5 Samsung Unpacked 5 event during the Barcelona-based conference.

The Nokia Android phone is supposedly going to launch as part of the Nokia Asha family, but with a Lumia-esque design in six eye-popping colours.

Leaked images of the Nokia X UI also suggest Nokia will opt for a heavily customised Android UI for its upcoming Android smartphone.

HTC One 2 homescreen leaks, points to hardware refresh

Ahead of the phone’s formal unveiling the HTC One 2 leaks are coming thick and fast, with the handset’s refreshed homescreen now making a premature appearance.

Yet another future phone titbit to surface courtesy of the reliable Twitter-based tipster @evleaks, the teased HTC One 2 homescreen has added to reports that the HTC One follow-on will do away with soft-touch keys in favour of making the trio of Android controls completely digital.

Whereas the HTC One feature physical soft keys for the home, back and menu Android controls, the HTC One 2 looks set to place its navigation buttons on the screen, a move that will free up hardware space for a larger display in a similarly sized body.

HTC One 2 homescreenGiven the introduction of digital Android controls, the leaked HTC One 2 homescreen shows that the handset’s familiar shortcuts have been raised up the display, with the phone also looking set to add a splash of colour to last year’s largely monochrome interface.

There are no other notable HTC One 2 homescreen differences teased by the leaked images, suggesting the second-generation handset’s Sense UI could be largely similar to the original.

Recent HTC One 2 leaks have suggested that the inbound Samsung Galaxy S5 rival, also doing the rounds under the moniker of the HTC M8, will be launched at a dedicated post MWC 2014 event in March.

Leaked HTC One 2 specs have pointed to a new, larger 5-inch, 1080p Full HD display being included alongside a revised dual-sensor camera. A premium, metal unibody design is expected to feature.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Leaked: 16MP camera, Snapdragon 800 CPU and 1080p screen tipped

Leaked Samsung Galaxy S5 benchmarks

Leaked Samsung Galaxy S5 benchmarks

New Samsung Galaxy S5 leaks have surfaced, with prematurely unveiled benchmarks suggesting the eagerly awaited handset will run a 16-megapixel camera and Snapdragon 800 processor.

With a 16-megapixel snapper having long been tipped to feature on the Samsung Galaxy S4 follow-on, latest leaks have suggested that the improved primary camera, which will boast a 5312 x 2988 pixel shooting resolution, will be paired with a secondary, 2.1-megapixel camera up front.

What’s more, although it had previously been mooted that the Samsung Galaxy S5 would become the first device to run Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 805 CPU, the newly leaked AnTuTu benchmark tests, reportedly taken from the S5, have instead hinted a 2.5GHz quad-core 800 chip is set to feature.

Last month, speaking with TrustedReviews, Qualcomm hinted that the Samsung Galaxy S5 would miss out on the 805 chipset which is destined for handsets later in the year.

With a Samsung Galaxy S5 release date widely expected to be held later this month, Tim McDonough, Qualcomm’s VP of Marketing told us the first Snapdragon 805 powered phones are not expected until “mid-year.”

As well as teasing camera and power credentials, the latest Samsung Galaxy S5 leaks have put the device in line to run Google’s latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS and a 1080p Full HD display, down on the 2K resolution panel that has been heavily rumoured.

Earlier this week Samsung hinted that the Samsung Galaxy S5 release date will be held on February 24, issuing invites to an MWC-based press conference that it has teasingly dubbed “Unpacked 5.”

Given Samsung has yet to offer any formal word on the S5’s specs sheet, we suggest that these slightly middling performance leaks be taken lightly, for now at least.

Titanfall Xbox 360 release date delayed

The eagerly awaited Titanfall Xbox 360 release date has been delayed, with publisher EA confirming the game has been pushed back until March 28.

Although the next-gen Xbox One and PC Titanfall release will still be held on March 13 in the UK, March 11 in the US, those looking to snap up the game on the Xbox 360 are now facing a further two week wait for the Bluepoint developed FPS title.

According to an official EA spokesperson, “The extra two weeks will ensure the full world of Xbox gamers have an awesome experience,”

Speaking in an official statement announcing the Titanfall Xbox 360 release date delays, the publisher added: “In these last few weeks before launch, Respawn is in the final stages of polishing the Xbox One and PC versions of the game. Bluepoint is doing the same with the Xbox 360 version.

“To give them the time they need to put the finishing touches on the current-gen version of the game, we are moving the Xbox 360 ship date to March 25 in North America and March 28 in Europe. “

One of the most hotly tipped games of the year, Titanfall will see gamers thrown into a futuristic battleground where they can compete across an extensive campaign mode and expansive online, multiplayer environment as both Titans and Pilots.

HP Chromebox revealed

HP has announced its own Chromebox device, thus joining rivals Dell, Samsung, and Asus in the Chrome OS desktop PC category.

The HP Chromebook will be extremely compact, with a length and width of just 5-inches. This makes it suitable for attaching to a monitor or even carrying around with you for impromptu presentations or video calls, as well as literal desktop use.

It’s not lacking for connectivity either, with four USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, and DisplayPort.

HP isn’t giving too much away about the internal workings of its new Chromebox, but we do know that there will be a Haswell-generation Intel Core i7 option.

The HP Chromebox’s reveal follows swiftly on the heels of Google’s own announcement of Chromebox for meetings, an initiative to push such compact Chrome OS desktops to businesses. This will bundle together a Chromebox PC, an HD camera, a mic and speaker unit, and a remote control.

"Chromebox for meetings brings together Google Hangouts and Google Apps in an easy-to-manage Chromebox, making it simpler for any company to have high-definition video meetings," says Google.

The first device to fit this category is from Asus, but this latest effort from HP will also be part of the initiative.

There are no details yet on pricing for the HP Chromebox, but the aforementioned Asus bundle costs $999. HP will launch its Chromebox this spring (in the US at least) in a range of four bright colours.

Steve Wozniak: There’s “nothing keeping Apple out of the Android market”

Steve Wozniak

Steve Wozniak makes a daring statement

Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, has revealed that there is nothing stopping Apple from launching an Android device.

Although Wozniak is no longer involved with the daily workings of Apple, he still has superior insights into the company’s mindset.

He believes Apple should launch an Android device as a second strand to its iOS flagship line.

“There’s nothing that would keep Apple out of Android market as a secondary phone market. We could compete very well”, said Wozniak in an interview with Wired. “People like the precious look of stylings and manufacturing that we do in our product compared to the other Android offering. We could play in two arenas at the same time.”

There’s definitely nothing technically stopping Apple from launching an Android device, as Google’s OS is an open-source system software available to anyone to develop.

Similar to the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet range, Apple could even introduce a heavy Android UI to bring it more in-line with iOS.

Wozniak, of course is still very protective of Apple and defended the company against backlash suggesting the company failed to show any innovation last year.

Apple is strongly rumoured to be working on an iWatch smartwatch and its own smart TV currently nicknamed the Apple iTV. However, neither made an appearance during 2013.

“The great products really come from secret development. You put small teams of great people on them and they aren’t bothered by other people commenting on what they’re doing while they’re doing it. A whole new product category doesn’t happen very often. It might happen once a decade. Sometimes you have to wait for one of those to come about.”

He also said the iPhone 5S was lacking in new features because of Apple’s choice, suggesting Samsung “just throws in a lot of features” that aren’t really that innovative.

“If you have something really good don’t change it; don’t screw it up”, said Wozniak, before adding that “people don’t really choose their smartphones based on features.”

Red Samsung Galaxy Note 3 launches in the UK alongside Rose Gold option

Red Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Red Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Samsung has expanded its phablet collection, with a red Samsung Galaxy Note 3 having launched in the UK alongside a ‘Rose Gold’ colour option.

Formally unveiled back in December, the two new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 colours are now available to purchase in the UK, with retailer and high street chain Carphone Warehouse offering both new devices alongside the standard black and white hued options.

Available across a range of networks, including O2, Vodafone and EE, the 4G capable red Samsung Galaxy Note 3 can be snapped up for free on two year contracts starting from as low as £32 per month.

Aside from their new paint jobs, the red and rose gold Samsung Galaxy Note 3 handsets do not differ in any way to the original monochrome models released shortly after the handset’s IFA unveiling last September.

Centred around a stunning 5.7-inch display with a 1080p Full HD resolution, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 packs a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor alongside 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, further expandable via microSD card.

With a 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3’s specs sheet is further enhanced by a 2-megapixel, secondary snapper up front and Google’s Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS, although an Android 4.4 KitKat update is already available.

Eve Valkyrie will be an exclusive Oculus Rift launch title

Developer CCP and virtual reality company Oculus have announced Eve Valkyrie will be an exclusive Oculus Rift launch title.

Not only will Eve Valkyrie be an Oculus Rift exclusive from launch, but it will also be co-published by Oculus as part of a new publishing company.

Although we don’t officially know when the Oculus Rift will launch, at least we know what one of the launch games will be.

Eve Valkyrie is a spin-off from the massively popular Eve Online MMO, which has already spawned the PS3 Dust 514 spin-off.

The announcement will hardly be a surprise for some gamers, as the title has yet to be shown on anything other than the Oculus Rift, including the new Crystal Cove prototype.

“We strongly believe the best VR experiences are going to be the ones built from the ground up for VR, and we’ve kept that in mind whilst developing Valkyrie,” said a CCP developer team statement.

“We wanted people to really feel like they were there – to sense the vastness of space, feel the confined area of the cockpit and get that adrenaline rush as you see an exploding fighter whizz past your head.”

Eve Valkyrie actually started out as a tiny side project at CCP, but will now be “one of the first AAA games designed exclusively for the Rift.”

“In a very short amount of time this passion project became a fully-fledged CCP project which we’re now working on in Newcastle. It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come in a year.”

EA suggests 2014 FIFA World Cup game will not launch on Xbox One or PS4

EA 2014 FIFA World Cup game

EA 2014 FIFA World Cup game

EA has teased the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup game, suggesting the football sim will not be made available for the next-gen Xbox One and PS4.

Set to launch ahead of this summer’s tournament in Brazil, the 2014 FIFA World Cup game will be developed by the FIFA 14 maker but, according to the EA released teaser image will only be launched for the now outdated Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles.

Despite having confirmed its work on the project back in October last year, EA has yet to offer many firm details on the upcoming World Cup game.

Remaining cagey on the title, EA has today Tweeted a teaser image for the upcoming game alongside the unrevealing message: “The World Cup… #Itsinyourhands.”

Although finalised release plans are yet to be confirmed, the teaser image is adorned with the PS3 and Xbox 360 logos only, with no reference to Sony’s and Microsoft’s latest console offerings.

EA has been responsible for releasing the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro tie-in games since 1998. Up until 2012 all titles were launched as dedicated games although the most recent title was made available as a DLC offering built upon the year’s FIFA 12 base.

HTC to partner with Google on new Nexus tablet?

Despite the company’s past tablet failings, latest reports have suggested HTC has been chosen as the manufacturing partner for Google’s next Nexus-branded tablet offering.

Although the Google Nexus 7 remains one of the most popular Android tablets on the market, it has been suggested that Google could part ways with current manufacturing partner Asus in favour of a new deal with the HTC One maker.

While neither Google nor HTC have yet confirmed the plans, reports out of the manufacturer’s native Taiwan have claimed that work has already started on the HTC made Nexus tablet which will be launched later this year.

It is currently unknown what size display the new Nexus offering will boast, although the reported Q3 release would favour a Nexus 7 refresh, with a new 10-inch Google tablet having been mooted for an early summer unveiling.

HTC’s past tablet offering, the HTC Flyer, failed to grab much consumer attention following its launch back in 2011, with the Taiwanese manufacturer having since conceded tablet market defeat to the likes of Apple and Samsung.

It is believed that HTC was one of a number of manufacturers to pitch for the rights to make Google’s next Nexus tablet.

If accurate, it is feasible that the HTC made Nexus tablet could boast a new, premium aluminium design, similar to that of the HTC One, that would enable Google’s tablet offerings to better compete with the high-end likes of the iPad Air and iPad mini 2.

Mozilla to launch Firefox launcher for Android

Mozilla has announced its plans to launch a Firefox Launcher for Android phones.

The Firefox Launcher will be an Android homescreen replacement powered by Everything Me and aims to be contextually aware.

It will give you app suggestions for the ones you are most likely to use, collected app smart folders and a smart app search for those you have and similar ones to download and install.

“Firefox Launcher for Android makes it easy to discover the content you want in any moment and is optimized for the way you use your phone”, said Mozilla in a statement. “The app integrates the contextual adaptive app search from EverythingMe with the Firefox for Android Web browser to offer users a personalised and customisable Web experience that is fun and intuitive.”

Mozilla has partnered with EverythingMe and has based the Firefox Launcher software on the company’s own, which is a contextually aware launcher already available on Google Play.

EverythingMe and Mozilla demoed the launcher at the InContext Conference in San Francisco and revealed it will suggest apps according to the time of day too.

Apps suggestions will differ from morning to evening, with the latter including apps for checking out local events to plan your night-time activities.

“We’ll share updates soon as development is finished and we get ready for beta testing”, added Mozilla.

The company did release an initial screenshot of the Firefox launcher with the announcement, which we’ve included below.

Oculus Rift now lets you train with the England Rugby team

Oculus Rift Wear the Rose

Oculus Rift Wear the Rose

Oculus Rift in now even more exciting, with network provider O2 announcing its new ‘Wear the Rose’ prototype which utilises the virtual reality headset to let you train with the England Rugby team.

Tipped as the “first fully immersive 360-degree virtual reality sports experience’ to make use of the Oculus Rift headset, O2’s Wear the Rose release will see users of the futuristic gaming peripheral dropped into the heat of an England Rugby training session.

Created using a set of nine GoPro Hero 3 cameras mounted on a custom gimble, the Oculus Rift Wear the Rose offering will see users receive virtual passes from England players such as full back Mike Brown. What’s more, the software will let you experience an England team talk or a senses-disorienting tackle, all with free reign of the 360-degree images.

“We love discovering new ways of using technology to deliver exciting experiences for our customers, and what better way to bring England Rugby fans closer to the action than ‘Wear the Rose’ from O2,” Nina Bibby, the network’s Marketing and Consumer Director stated.

We’ll transport you into the virtual rugby boots of the England squad, taking in the heart pounding action of a full training session. This exciting technology really has to be experienced to be believed and we’re looking forward to bringing it to rugby fans across the UK this year.”

World Cup winner and now England Attacking Skills Coach Mike Catt added: “Getting to see the technology used for the first time in sport was fantastic.

“We tried to re-create as authentic an England training session for rugby fans as possible, and we really hope they enjoy the experience.”

Despite having required a staggering 160 hours of filming and a further 320 hours of development, the Oculus Rift Wear the Rose prototype will not be receiving a general release but will instead be demoed at a range of events to coincide with the current RBS Six Nations campaign. Full details of where you can enjoy the experience have yet to be confirmed.

With Oculus Rift expected to be made available for purchase during the coming year, reports last month suggested that games for the VR peripheral could cost more than their standard Xbox One or PS4 counterparts.

The Order: 1886 will be single-player only

The Order: 1886 will be single-player only, lacking any form of competitive multiplayer mode.

Andrea Pessino, co-founder of game developer Ready at Dawn, has confirmed the PS4 exclusive The Order: 1886 will not offer any kind of multiplayer.

When a curious gamer asked about a “competitive multiplayer mode” for The Order: 1886, Pessino replied saying it would be single-player only.

“No multiplayer, it is a single player, third person action adventure game”, said Pessino on Twitter.

Of course, many gamers looking forward to The Order: 1886 were a little disappointed by the news, with some suggesting that the game’s launch price would be asking a lot for limited content.

One Twitter follower complained that he would have to pay the £49.99 ($60) RRP for around 6-10 hours of gameplay.

“Better to do one thing well than a whole bunch half-assed. We are trying to make a single-player experience you will enjoy”, replied Pessino, without revealing how long The Order: 1886’s story will last.

“If we are going to succeed or not will be up to you to decide”, added Pessino.

The Order: 1886 was originally announced at E3 in June 2013 as a brand new PS4 IP. Set in an alternate history mixing Victorian London with comparatively modern technologies and some mythical creatures, it could well be quite an interesting game come launch.

Gamers will be invited to “discover a unique version of Victorian-Era London where technology and the supernatural collide. Players will weild advanced weapons and gadgets that didn’t exist during that era and the realism of the game experience will make you feel like these elements could have been very plausible during the time.”

Developer Ready at Dawn is responsible for previous titles including God of War: Age of Olympus.

Currently, there is no confirmed release date for The Order: 1886.

First Samsung Galaxy S5 cases leak with boxy design

An array of claimed Samsung Galaxy S5 cases have appeared online ahead of the phone’s formal unveiling, with the leaks teasing a handset with a rather boxy design.

Having hit the web courtesy of specialist case manufacturer Trident, the speculative Samsung Galaxy S5 cases are already available for order in the UK. Although able to be purchased, we must stress that their ability to fit the S5 when unveiled should be taken lightly.

Available in two designs and a variety of colours, the Trident Samsung Galaxy S5 cases are constructed from a shock-absorbing silicone layer that is encased with a separate layer of hardened polycarbonate.

While the Trident Aegis is a standard case, the reportedly Samsung Galaxy S5 compatible Trident Kraken adds an inbuilt kickstand. With both offerings available in black, blue, red and green hues, the two models will set wannabe owners back £24.99 and £34.99 respectively.

Although it is unlikely that Trident has received any official Samsung Galaxy S5 dimensions from the Korean manufacturer, the case maker has hinted that the Samsung Galaxy S4 follow-on will boast a large display within a slightly squat, boxy body. The cases show no rear cut out for a fingerprint scanner as some S5 rumours have hinted could be inbound.

Earlier this week Samsung teased that the eagerly awaited Samsung Galaxy S5 release date will be held on February 24, issuing invites to a press conference it has dubbed “Unpacked 5.”

Recent Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours have hinted that the phone will see a 5.2-inch 2K display partnered with a new quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 16-megapixel primary camera and Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS.

GTA Online gets 10 new Rockstar Verified Jobs

Rockstar has added 10 new Rockstar Verified Jobs to GTA Online, the multiplayer experience of GTA 5.

The GTA Online world will now have 10 new Jobs to its name that have been specially chosen by the GTA developer to earn the coveted Verified status.

These jobs will be available to everyone to play on Xbox Live and PSN, and can be bookmarked on the Rockstar Social Club so you can easily find them next time you play GTA Online.

One of the new races is by a user called SaltedCracka, who already has eight published races and considerable experience with the Creator tools. The Custom Freeway gymkhana may only be short, but it’s technical too with a well-placed jump, narrow and tricky turns, and changes in elevation to challenge your braking skills.

Another of the races is called From Weazel to Weazel and is a tour of Los Santos and the Banham Canyon. It was already raced around 2,000 times before Rockstar gave it the Verified certification.

High Road is another new Verified Job addition and takes you from the town center into the hills before racing back to Hawick.

The Pad of Death is a deathmatch with an area scattered with trucks and containers and an abundance of grenades, explosives and weapons.

Horseback Hell shows what Rockstar calls “considerable Creator skills” in an arena just off the Senora Freeway that spawns players directly in the middle of the mania.

To see the full list of the new Rockstar Verified Races and Deathmatches head to the Rockstar Games Social Club website.

Sony to sell off PC arm as mobile takes primary focus

Sony’s future is mobile as the Japanese tech giant confirms it is to sell off its PC arm in order to shift focus to the growing smartphone scene.

With the Vaio brand having been a stalwart of the PC sector for many a year, Sony has called time on its now struggling PC sector, announcing that while mobile is to become a lead focus, it will also offer more concentrated efforts to its flourishing TV efforts.

Having been working on a plan to reform its business strategy since April 2012, Sony has today announced that its PC arm will be sold to Japan Industrial Partners alongside the Vaio brand.

Sony Corporation today announced significant new measures to address reform of its PC and TV businesses aimed at accelerating the revitalization and growth of its electronics business,” an official statement from the company stated.

“Sony and Japan Industrial Partners Inc. ("JIP") today concluded a memorandum of understanding confirming the parties' intent for Sony to sell to JIP Sony's PC business currently operated under the VAIO brand.”

They added: “Following a comprehensive analysis of factors, including the drastic changes in the global PC industry, Sony's overall business portfolio and strategy, the need for continued support of Sony's valued VAIO customers, and future employment opportunities for personnel involved in the VAIO business, the Company has determined that concentrating its mobile product lineup on smartphones and tablets and transferring its PC business to a new company established by JIP is the optimal solution.”

Sony and JIP are now set to enter due diligence, with negotiations on a final fee for Sony’s PC sector still to be determined. Sony has suggested it hopes the deal will be sealed by March 2014.

HTC to launch wearable before the end of 2014

HTC has confirmed it will be launching its first wearable by the end of 2014, along with the flagship HTC M8.

The Taiwanese company hopes that a wearable device and a strengthened marketing focus will help improve the company’s fortunes after a two-year period of revenue decline.

“We feel positive and optimistic about 2014 when compared to 2013,” said Chang Chialin, HTC CFO and Head of Global Sales in an interview with Bloomberg.

According to HTC Chairman Cher Wang, a wearable device, but not necessarily a smartwatch, will be available “by this year’s Christmas shopping season”. It seems that the company have been working on the device for many years and have encountered several technical challenges, including battery problems like the Samsung Galaxy Gear.

“Many years ago we started looking and smartwatches and wearables, but we believe that we really have to solve the battery problems and the LCD light problems. These are consumer-centric problems”, said Wang.

Along with the upcoming wearable, HTC will launch the next HTC One flagship, currently named the HTC M8 sometime in March according to a person with direct knowledge of the plans.

Earlier this week, the first image of the HTC M8 leaked online revealing its twin-sensor rear camera and striking resemblance to the HTC One.

It also seems HTC will launch a variety of mid to low-end products throughout the year, in order to bolster its hardware portfolio for the year ahead.

“2013 wasn’t a very good year for HTC. We have to admit we took our eyes somewhat off the ball in making sure we have a robust portfolio in the mid- and affordable end, which we’re fixing now.”

HTC will take fresh look at its marketing strategies as well, especially following their hire of Robert Downey Jr. for $12 million to represent the company.

Amazon buys video game developer Double Helix

Amazon has acquired video game developer Double Helix Games, presumably to produce first party titles for its much rumoured games console.

The news of the acquisition leaked through an invitation to a joint recruiting event from Amazon and Double Helix Games on February 13.

Following the leak, which was first reported by TechCrunch, Amazon provided the following brief statement: "Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers."

The deal involves Amazon acquiring Double Helix’s 75-strong team of staff and its IP.

Double Helix Games was responsible for one of the Xbox One console’s launch games, Killer Instinct, which was built using its own HEX engine. Microsoft has confirmed through a statement to Polygon that it will be using a different development partner on the Killer Instinct franchise from now on.

Most recently, Double Helix has been working with Capcom on an imminent reboot of the Japanese company’s classic action platformer, Strider. The game is set to launch on February 19, so is presumably already complete.

This news follows a report at the end of January claiming that Amazon was to launch an Android-powered games console in 2014.

The console will apparently cost less than $300 / £180, and is said to be a similar size to the revised PSOne console (so a lot smaller than the Xbox One and PS4).

As you might expect from an Amazon console, it will also be able to download and stream TV, movie, and music content from the company’s vast multimedia library.

There’s been nothing official on the Amazon console as yet, but at the beginning of January the company revealed that it was working on a product that would "deliver Digital Media to our customers in new ways and disrupt the current marketplace," and that would be "bigger than Kindle."

Toshiba Chromebook ships early in UK and US

Toshiba has made its first Chromebook laptop available ahead of schedule in the UK and US.

Announced at the Consumer Electronics Show on January 6, the Toshiba Chromebook was supposed to hit shops on February 16.

Those plans appear to have been brought forward, with the affordable Chrome OS laptop available to purchase now.

UK customers can head on over to Amazon now and order the Toshiba Chromebook, with the shipping date put at February 10. It costs £249, which is precisely the price Toshiba predicted.

There seems to be a little confusion concerning price for US customers, however. Toshiba’s own website is listing the Chromebook for $280, which is $20 more than was initially predicted.

One of the most exciting things about the Toshiba Chromebook is that it’s powered by Intel’s latest power-sipping Haswell processor architecture, making that low price seem extra tempting.

Aside from an impressive CPU, the Toshiba Chromebook features a 13.3-inch 1366 x 768 display, a 16GB SSD (Chrome OS relies heavily on the cloud, with 100GB of Google Drive storage included), and 2GB of RAM.

You also get a full keyboard, an HD webcam, stereo speakers, an HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports, and an SD card reader. You connectivity options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.

As you might expect given the lightweight Chrome OS, the Haswell CPU, and that compact display, the Toshiba Chromebook has excellent stamina. Toshiba expects you to get 9 hours out of a single charge.

When we went hands-on with the Toshiba Chromebook back in January we concluded that "If you are thinking of swapping Mac and PC for Chrome, Toshiba's Chromebook is shaping up to be one the better alternatives."

We’ll let you know for sure in our full review.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 tipped for April 8 release

Microsoft has reportedly delayed the release of the Windows 8.1 Update 1, with the software patch now expected to be released on April 8.

Having previously been scheduled for a March 11 rollout, the Windows 8.1 Update 1 is said to have been pushed back almost a month, although exact reasons for the short term postponement have yet to be explained.

Citing two unnamed sources within Microsoft, the latest reports out of ZDNet have claimed that Microsoft’s upcoming software update will now be released in the days following Microsoft’s San Francisco-based developers’ conference, Microsoft Build.

Microsoft has yet to formalise the new Windows 8.1 Update 1 release date, and as such these reports should be taken lightly until confirmed.

Set to bring a range of new features and bug fixes to the desktop and tablet OS, it is expected that the Windows 8.1 Update 1 will see Microsoft make the platform more easily accessible and navigable for consumers making use of more traditional mouse-based input options.

According to the latest reports, Microsoft’s targeted March Windows 8.1 Update 1 was always seen as ‘fairy ambitious’ by the software giant.

Earlier this week Microsoft announced that Satya Nadallia will replace Steve Ballmer as the company's CEO.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Active tipped to follow flagship phone to market

Ahead of the imminent Samsung Galaxy S5 release date, reports have started to circulate around potential spinoff devices with a Samsung Galaxy S5 Active model mooted.

According to latest reports out of Samsung’s native Korea, the flagship Samsung Galaxy S5 will be followed by a waterproof and dustproof model later in the year, much in the same vein as the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active following the Samsung Galaxy S4.

While Korean outlet ETNews has suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active accounted for just “3-4 per cent” of all S4 sales, it has claimed that the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active will be positioned closer to its flagship sibling and could account for 20 per cent of all S5-branded devices sold.

Although it is likely that Samsung will launch spinoffs of its upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 flagship, with a Samsung Galaxy S5 mini seemingly a given, we must stress that these reports should be taken lightly given their less than official roots.

Earlier this week Samsung offered the biggest indication yet that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be unveiled during MWC 2014, with the manufacturer issuing invites to a February 24 press conference that has been dubbed “Unpacked 5”.

Latest Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours have hinted the handset could play host to everything from a new quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor to an improved 16-megapixel camera and a larger 5.2-inch display with a 2K resolution.

Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry standalone game coming to PS4, PS3 and PC this month

Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry will launch on the PS4, PS3 and PC later this month.

Ubisoft has announced that Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry will launch as a standalone game for PS4 and PS3 on February 19. It will then be launched for PC on February 25.

The Freedom Cry title was originally released as add-on DLC content for Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag but will now be available as a standalone game.

This means you will not be required to buy AC4: Black Flag in order to play Freedom Cry.

It seems from the announcement trailer included below, this standalone version will be a PlayStation exclusive, and will not come to Xbox One or Xbox 360.

The announcement is probably an attempt to entice you to buy the full game though, as the Freedom Cry is technically reliant on the AC4 engine and gameplay style.

Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry tells the story of Adewale, the old first mate of AC4’s hero Edward Kenway, who is now a fully-fledged Assassin and captain of his own ship.

The storyline sees Adewale fight for freedom from slavery, but sees himself drawn further into the Maroon slave community. You must then accompany him as his faces his “vicious past”.

“In the game, Adewale will take his new crew and set of weapons, including a machete and a blunderbuss, to assassinate enemies and free slaves, delivering merciless justice in plantations and cities alike”, explains Ubisoft.

There’s no word on pricing for Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry as yet, but it will only be available as a digital download.

Apple has submitted an extensive Apple iPen patent outlining a stylus with a laser pointer and an audio recorder among other features.

A group of Apple iPen patents have been filed in Europe, revealing plans for a modular iPen design that would allow you to modify the iPen for different tasks.

Apple would introduce different “expansion models” over time to constantly keep the iPen up to date and be able to offer increased functionality.

The late Steve Jobs openly said he was not fond of dumb styluses and thus the iPen project was supposedly born. The iPen already has over 22 patents to its name, and the new flurry of patents suggests Apple is working away on it in the background.

The latest iPen patents reveal some of its potential uses, including its compatibility with iPads, iPhones and other touch sensitive devices.

The modular design would work in that the base module would consist of the stylus tip, stimulation signal circuit, a processor and a connection interlace for connecting the base to its expansion modules.

The patent suggests module expansions could include a camera, audio recorder, gyroscope, accelerometer, laser pointer, projector and communication circuitry – not necessary with an expansion model for each.

This may sound a bit bizarre, but a gyroscope and accelerometer combined would allow the iPen to understand gesture commands.

A camera could be utilised to capture the projection surface for position accuracy, or used to scan documents.

The Apple iPen would be charged from a power source attached to the base module, or potentially using a future NFC wireless charging system.

We’ve yet to see anything of this kind from Apple as yet, but with the S-Pen stylus wielding Samsung devices proving exceedingly popular – especially the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – Apple may be gearing up to launch the iPen this year.
