New Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella
Almost six months after Steve Ballmer announced he would be stepping down, Satya Nadella has been announced as the new Microsoft CEO.
Nadella, who currently holds the position of Microsoft’s Head of Cloud and Enterprise and is tasked with running the company’s computing platforms, joined the company back in 1992 after gaining a degrees in electronics, computer science and business administration.
Formerly the world’s biggest company, Microsoft has seen its profitability slide in recent years although remains the world’s leading software provider.
Nadella will become just the third Microsoft CEO following the company’s birth in 1970. Previously co-founder Bill Gates led the company before passing over power to Steve Ballmer. As well as confirming Nadella as the new CEO, Microsoft has revealed that Gates will step down as chairman, instead taking a position as a technology adviser.
"During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella," Gates said in making the announcement.
"Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together. His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth."
On his new promotion, Nadella said: "Microsoft is one of those rare companies to have truly revolutionised the world through technology, and I couldn't be more honoured to have been chosen to lead the company.
"The opportunity ahead for Microsoft is vast, but to seize it, we must focus clearly, move faster and continue to transform. A big part of my job is to accelerate our ability to bring innovative products to our customers more quickly."
