PlayStation Now branded ‘a joke’ by leading analyst

Industry analysts have spoken out on Sony’s latest gaming venture, branding the PlayStation Now streaming service ‘a joke’.

Having been unveiled at CES 2014 last month, PlayStation Now is set to launch later this year, with the streaming service to give wannabe gamers access to leading titles on a variety of none-gaming specific devices, such as connected TVs.

Despite PlayStation Now targeting a summer release in the US, Sony has yet to announce any third-party partnerships for the gaming service, although insists that “publishers are being exceedingly bullish” about the idea of joining the PlayStation Now movement.

Now, however, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has rubbished these claims, suggesting that “no publisher” would allow its more recent titles to be made available through PlayStation Now.

"PlayStation Now is a joke," Pachter, a liaison to numerous investors told Game Informer. "There is no publisher that is going to license content that's less than two-years old because they would be concerned that they can't sell as many copies if they make it available for subscription or rental.”

Further slamming the upcoming gaming platform, he added: “This has no prayer of working. None.”

Although having only been confirmed for a US rollout so far, last week, speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews, Sony hinted that a PlayStation Now UK launch could soon be on the cards.

“Why wouldn’t we do our best to bring new experiences to the UK as quickly as we can,” Fergal Gara, Sony’s Head of PlayStation UK said.

He added: “I am certainly hungry to bring every strong PlayStation experience to our gamers as quick as I can.”
