Day one Xbox One sales top one million units

Following the console’s release yesterday, Microsoft has confirmed that day one Xbox One sales topped more than one million units.

Hitting the milestone figure in the console’s first 24 hours on sale, Microsoft has stated that the Xbox One launch has become the biggest console launch in the company’s history, eclipsing early interest in either the original Xbox or last generation’s Xbox 360.

While the one million units day one sales figure sounds highly impressive, this number is sure to include global pre-orders for the console. Earlier this year Sony confirmed that the PS4 achieved more than one million pre-order sales within weeks of the console being made available for advanced purchase.

“Following a worldwide celebration, Xbox One launched in 13 markets on Nov. 22 to great fanfare,” an official Microsoft spokesperson has announced through a statement on the company’s website. “The team is excited to confirm the launch of Xbox One was the biggest launch in Xbox history, with more than one million consoles sold through worldwide in less than 24 hours – surpassing day one Xbox 360 sales and setting a new record for Microsoft.”

With Xbox One stocks already said to be drying up at retailers around the world, Microsoft added: “We are working to replenish stock as fast as possible to meet the unprecedented demand from our customers.”

Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Marketing and Strategy, Xbox added: “We are humbled and grateful for the excitement of Xbox fans around the world.”

“Seeing thousands of excited fans lined up to get their Xbox One and their love for gaming was truly a special moment for everyone on the Xbox team. We are working hard to create more Xbox One consoles and look forward to fulfilling holiday gift wishes this season.”

With the Xbox One now available in the UK and 12 other leading nations around the world, the console has been sandwiched by the PS4’s US and UK arrivals. Although current available in the States, the UK PS4 release will be held next Friday, November 29.

Is this the metal frame of the Samsung Galaxy S5?

Samsung Galaxy S5 - the metal frame

Is this the cool metal frame of the Galaxy S5?

Pictures of the Samsung Galaxy S5’s new metal frame have leaked online ahead of a rumoured launch early next year.

This could be the first glimpse of the metallic frame Samsung is using for the Galaxy S5 flagship, which is supposedly the first Galaxy handset to move away from a plastic body.

Nowhereelse.fr has obtained the images from a subcontractor Samsung has reportedly chosen to produce the S5’s metallic frames.

Of course, there’s no confirmation as to whether these actually belong to the Samsung Galaxy S5 so as usual take the snaps with a rather large handful of salt.

For one thing, the rear camera is situated in the top corner of the Samsung Galaxy S5 if these frames are legitimate, which means Samsung has moved it from the centre of the phone as it is in the Samsung Galaxy S4.

The headphone jack is also on the bottom of the device like it is with the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

Also, the space for the USB port doesn’t look wide enough for USB 3.0. There are bound to be more inaccuracies that can be spotted as well by eagle-eyed Galaxy S4 owners.

Metal frames aside, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is also rumoured to pack a WQHD 2560 x 1440p display to improve upon the Full 1080p HD resolution of the Galaxy S4.

A recent Samsung patent filing also suggests the device will feature iris-scanning technology, improving the security offered by fingerprint sensors included in the likes of the HTC One Max.

Samsung is also prepping a 14nm 64-bit Exynos 6 CPU for 2014 that will feature in the Galaxy S5, or so a senior ARM official hinted earlier this month.

Shin Jong-Kyun, Samsung’s CEO of Mobile, said earlier this year that: “Yes, our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality.”

Toshiba Excite Write Tablet Review

What is the Toshiba Excite Write?

The Toshiba Excite Write is a 10.1-inch Android based tablet at the higher end range of the spectrum. Packing a 2.8GHz quad-core CPU, 32GB storage and a 2,560 x 1,600 display, it certainly has the specs to impress, and like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet it comes with a pressure sensitive stylus. But does it have enough to make it stand out from the very crowded tablet marketplace, and is it worth the extra cost at £450? Let’s find out.

Toshiba Excite Write Tablet 12

Toshiba Excite Write – Design

Since the very first iPad set the fashion for tablet design, there’s been very little dramatic variation, and the Excite Write tablet follows this trend. Face up, it’s completely black, with only the Toshiba and harman/kardon logo and a small front facing camera to show which side is the top. Unlike the iPad and Note 10.1, there are no physical face buttons, though it does have a dock with three permanently in a thin touch bar along the bottom of the screen when on.

The back cover of it takes a different direction, with a silver bumped finish, presumably to ensure you won’t drop it. It’s very minimalist here, although bafflingly the speakers are in exactly the position that your hands will cover if you hold the Excite Write in landscape mode.

Toshiba Excite Write Tablet 26

Underneath a flap on the side is an HDMI out, a microSD card slot a micro USB port. The latter works as a charger for the optional keyboard cover: a Bluetooth keyboard that snaps around the tablet turning it into a makeshift laptop. More on this later, but in terms of the design, it looks stylish even if it makes more a very top heavy hybrid.

It weighs in (without the keyboard) at 630g - exactly the same as the HP Slatebook x2. Not exactly heavy, but the iPad Air (479g) has moved the goalposts in terms of what we call easy on the arms in the tablet space now. At 10.5mm thick, it’s not horribly chunky but the iPad Air’s incredible 7.5mm thickness trumps it again.

Toshiba Excite Write – Screen

The Excite Write features an IPS 2560 x 1600 display. That's the same resolution that the updated Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet runs, a useful comparison given both make their included stylus a key selling point.

Considering the high resolution, the actual screen itself is a little disappointing. Up close, icons look a little fuzzy without the sharpness you’d expect, and the colours while bright also feel a touch washed out. The brightness is adequate, but there’s not much noticeable difference from halfway up the slider and the very max. This sums up the screen all over: adequate, but not outstanding.

Toshiba Excite Write Tablet 9

The viewing angles are good, though. This is far more important in a tablet than a laptop, and something which should be noted - although lights do have a tendency to reflect off of it. Reviewing the unit in late November, we weren’t able to get much bright natural light on it, but we imagine seeing things clearly on a bright summer’s day would be problematic.

Amazon to turn London Tube stops into parcel pick-up points?

Amazon is in talks with Transport for London to convert ticket offices into parcel pick-up points.

As part of the radical plan to close all Tube ticket offices in favour of automatic ticket machines, Transport for London and Amazon are talking about converting the offices into drop-off points for goods bought from the site.

The plan is to shut down manned ticket offices across the London Underground system by 2015 in order to fund 24-hour tube operation on the five major tube lines.

This will include most of the Central and Piccadilly lines, the whole Jubilee and Victoria lines and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line.

According to the Financial Times, Amazon is talking to tube bosses to find a way to utilise the soon to be abandoned ticket offices into pick-up points for goods.

Currently the online retailer offers Amazon Locker delivery for goods, which allows you to pick up your purchases via the self-service lockers. You can either opt for free standard Amazon Locker delivery or One-Day delivery for £1.99.

These could be installed in London Tube locations by the end of 2015, which would make it easier for commuters to receive their goods.

There are currently only 15 Amazon Locker locations in London, but if the FT rumours are correct there will be many more cropping up within the next 24 months.

The online retail giant has yet to confirm the report.

Boris Johnson, London mayor, is in favour of the 24-hour tube operation plans, claiming that London businesses will greatly benefit from the service.

“It will be hugely valuable to London’s economy, which is increasingly a 24-hour economy, interacting with time zones around the world,” he said.

Tony Travers, a London expert at the London School of Economics added: “This will be hugely popular. It will also be very useful in convincingly selling London overseas as a 24-hour city.”

Sony reportedly buying back Crash Bandicoot from Activision

Crash Bandicoot

Crash Bandicoot coming to a PS4 near you? Maybe...

Sony is reportedly looking to buy back Crash Bandicoot from Activision and could be launching a new PS4 game in the future.

New rumours have emerged suggesting Sony is buying Crash Bandicoot back from Activision to launch a new PS4 title under the name.

Activision’s Crash Bandicoot website no longer loads and for some reason the developer no longer lists the game on its website, fuelling speculation that Sony has bought out the franchise.

Crash Bandicoot was one of the more iconic games for the PlayStation back in the days of PlayStation 1.

It was originally developed by Naughty Dogs and was a Sony PlayStation exclusive, but was sold to Activision.

However, a new Crash Bandicoot game hasn’t been launched since 2008. One was scheduled for a 2010 release but was subsequently cancelled.

This may mean that Activision has been sitting on an unfinished Crash Bandicoot game since then, which Sony could potentially take over and develop for the PS4.

Earlier this month, a PS4 Crash Bandicoot game was listed on the Amazon France website published by Sony, which suggests a game announcement could be on the cards.

Unfortunately, the Amazon France listing didn’t give a release date for the PS4 Crash Bandicoot game, but did state the RRP as €69.99, which would equate to UK PS4 RRP of around £50.

Sony has responded to the Crash Bandicoot for PS4 rumours on Twitter though, suggesting Activision still currently owns the license for the game.

One Twitter user posted: “So Crash Bandicoot for PS4 could be happening?”.

“Activision owns the IP, so you should ask them about it…” came the reply from Adam Boyes, Vice President of Publisher and Developer Relations at Sony.

Xbox One Release Date: The next-gen console arrives today

The Xbox One release date is now just hours away, with Microsoft’s next-gen console and PS4 rival set to hit retailers at midnight.

With less than a day to go until the official Xbox One release date, the console looks set to be in short supply at launch, with manufacturer Microsoft having recently stated that all day-one Xbox One pre-orders of the next-gen console have sold out.

Despite pre-orders drying up, a number of leading retailers, including GAME, Tesco and Asda have all confirmed they will be opening their doors at midnight for eager gamers.

"The launch of the Xbox One is a massive event for millions of gamers around the world and the console is sure to top many Christmas present lists this year," Tesco Home Entertainment manager Stephen Owusu said recenely.

Looking at midnight availability, he added: "We have worked closely with Microsoft to ensure we have a good quantity of initial stock but we will be getting more as we get nearer to Christmas."

The Xbox One release date will precede the UK PS4 release date by a full week, although Sony’s next-gen gamer is now already available in the US having gone on sale last Friday, November 15.

"November 22 is a special day in Xbox history,” Yusuf Mehdi, Vice President of Xbox Marketing said in making the Xbox One release date announcement earlier this year. “On this day, we first launched Xbox 360 in 2005. Our next chapter begins in 79 days, when Xbox One becomes available."

The Xbox One release date will see the eagerly awaited console launch simultaneously in 13 global markets on the 22nd. Launch territories for the console include Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and Spain. The US and UK are also included.

Although the Xbox One release date will precede that of the PS4, it will be more expensive. The Xbox One price was set earlier this year as £429, some £80 more expensive than the PS4 price tag.

With Day One console pre-orders having already sold out, Mehdi has confirmed that Microsoft will make more available giving eager gamers an extra chance.

"We are humbled and gratified by the tremendous interest in Xbox One from game fans everywhere,” he said. “We sold out of our pre-order supply faster than at any other time in our history and we are on path to have the biggest launch of an Xbox ever. We look forward to celebrating with millions and millions of gamers this holiday.

"As a result of this incredible consumer demand and the development progress on Xbox One, I am thrilled to share that today we are making available a limited number of additional Xbox One Day One consoles for pre-order. We have coordinated with our retail partners to make it easy for you to reserve your Xbox One today."

LG Odin 2.2GHz octa-core CPU ready for 2014 smartphones and tablets

LG G2

The successor of the LG G2 should feature the LG Odin chipset

LG is reportedly testing its own mobile chipset to include in its smartphones and tablets for 2014, an octa-core CPU codenamed Odin.

The supercharged 2.2GHz octa-core LG Odin processor is being prepared now and should feature in the successors to the LG G2 and LG G Pad 8.3.

LG is currently improving the speeds of its quad- and octa-core versions of Odin to 2.2GHz. It should feature Cortex-A15 cores clocked at 2.2Ghz and a big.LITTLE configuration with four Cortex-A15s and four frugal Cortex-A7s clocked at 1.7GHz.

A big.LITTLE configuration would mean the LG Odin chipset will be very power efficient and not be a drain on the battery life of future tablets and smartphones.

The LG Odin was originally tipped to feature in the LG G2 with clock speeds of 1.7GHz and 1.2GHz respectively for the A15 and A7 cores, but it seems LG has decided to hold back the chipset for future devices.

The LG G2 has a 2.26Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, like its rivals the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Google Nexus 5.

Although the octa-core Odin is reserved for future smartphones and tablets, the quad-core version should appear in LG Electronics devices like Smart TVs.

Samsung has already equipped one version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 with its octa-core Exynos 5 processor, and other manufacturers will no doubt follow in 2014.

If LG does use its LG Odin chipset in future smartphones it would mark a move away from a reliance on third-party manufacturers.

LG could save money and make more profit by manufacturing its own chips and it certainly has the facilities to do so.

It will have to be pretty powerful to compete with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 and the Exynos equivalent, so we’ll be intrigued to see what the LG Odin can do next year.

Sony HT-ST3 Audio Review

What is the Sony HT-ST3?

It’s the cheaper of two new soundbars introduced by Sony at IFA 2013, offering 4.1-channel sound from a super-slim speaker unit and subwoofer. In fact, at just 40mm high and 30mm deep, it’s the world’s slimmest Bluetooth-equipped soundbar.

SEE ALSO: Best soundbars you can buy

Sony HT-ST3 – Design

The reason why the HT-ST3’s soundbar is so slim is because all of the sockets, amplifiers and processing are found on the subwoofer, with a single cable connecting it to the speaker bar. If you’re after a wireless sub, you’ll need to step up to the £1,099 HT-ST7, which also offers 7.1 sound and Sony’s Magnetic Fluid speakers.

The soundbar itself is styled to match Sony’s ‘Sense of Quartz’ TVs and Blu-ray decks, with an all-black finish and angled facets at both ends. It’s not particularly eye-catching but should blend nicely with most TVs.

You wouldn’t realise it from afar but its build quality is superb. The main body is made from aluminium alloy with a brushed finish, while the front end features a stainless steel mesh. It all feels very solid and substantial. You can hang the speaker on the wall simply by hooking it onto screws, or place it on a tabletop using the supplied rubber stands.

The subwoofer is styled to match in a low-key, tasteful black finish. An LED display shines through the steel mesh on the front showing the selected input and volume level when adjusted. There’s a row of buttons along the top for up-close volume and input control.

The beauty is that you can place the unit horizontally or vertically depending on your layout, although when horizontal it’s roughly the same size as an AV receiver (430 x 135 x 370mm), so it’ll command a lot of space in your AV rack.

Sony HT-ST3 – Connections

The wide range of sockets on the subwoofer gives you lots of flexibility when connecting the rest of your kit. If you simply want to pass sound from a TV to the HT-ST3 for example, there’s a dedicated optical digital audio input and an ARC-compatible HDMI output, forming a neat, single-cable connection.

But connecting external devices to the Sony isn’t a problem either – there are three HDMI inputs, all of which can pass through 3D signals, a second optical digital input and analogue stereo RCA input. It’s a shame there’s no USB port, but that aside it’s a superb line-up.

Sony HT-ST3

Sony HT-ST3 – Features

Built-in Bluetooth with apt-X and AAC support is a stand-out feature, with NFC (Near Field Communication) providing a hassle-free way of pairing Android devices – simply tap it on the NFC logo and you’re ready to start streaming music.

Another big feature is HD audio decoding – the HT-ST3 handles Dolby True HD, DTS HD Master Audio, DTS-HD and 7.1 LPCM via HDMI, as well as Dolby Digital, DTS and DTS 96/24.

Sound is delivered from a total of 11 speakers – three for each of the front channels (a cone woofer, dome tweeter and passive radiator); two woofers and a tweeter for the centre channel; and two 100 x 150mm woofers for the sub. These are driven by an S-Master digital amplifier with power output rated at 2 x 15W for the front channels, 2 x 25W for the centre speaker and 2 x 75W for the subwoofer.

Sound modes include Standard, Movie, Music and Virtual Football, a new setting designed to replicate the acoustics of a stadium – perfect for watching England flunk out of next year’s World Cup in Brazil. Sony’s S-Force Pro Front Surround aims to fill the room with sound, while the three-stage Voice mode brings dialogue into sharper focus.

Titanfall: “Big surprises and news” teased for VGX on December 7

Respawn will be offering “big surprises and news” surrounding Titanfall at VGX on December 7.

Previously known as the Spike VGA Awards, VGX will be host to new and exciting information on Titanfall next month.

VGX host Geoff Keighley took to Twitter to tease the Titanfall announcements from Respawn.

“Excited to announce that Titanfall is coming to VGX. Big surprises and news from @respawn on December 7. Don’t miss it”, tweeted Keighley.

Other huge title expected to be given time at VGX include Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, an Xbox One and PS4 version of the March 2013 reboot and potentially Fallout 4, for a which a teaser site is counting down until mid-December.

Respawn recently announced the Titanfall release date will take place on March 14 2014 in the UK and will arrive on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.

“Since we revealed the game in June we’ve been absolutely blown away by the reaction to Titanfall,” said Vince Campella of Respawn Studios. “The feedback we’re getting from fans around the world is fuelling our team as we head towards March and motivating us to deliver an experience that lives up to the hype.”

Titanfall is a huge, online-only FPS game that will require you to take control of either a free-running pilot or dwell within the mech-style walkers known as titans.

“Set in the near future on a distant frontier torn apart by war, Titanfall drops players in the middle of a conflict between the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation (IMC) and the Militia. The action is rapid and varied – featuring parkour-style wall running, massive double jumps and the ability to hijack titans.”

You will be able to switch between pilot and titan to mix the gameplay up a bit and use their benefits to adapt to the changing situations.

Amazon Coins virtual currency launched in the UK

Amazon has launched its virtual currency, Amazon Coins, in the UK and is offering Kindle Fire owners £4 worth to spend.

The Amazon Coins allow customers to purchase Kindle Fire apps, games and in-app content via the Amazon Appstore on their tablet range.

Any new or existing Kindle Fire tablet owner, including the new Amazon Kindle Fire HDX, will get £4 Coins credit to spend.

“Today we are giving Kindle Fire owners £4 worth of Coins to spend on new apps and games, such as Candy Crush Saga and Angry Birds Star Wars”, said Amazon’s Vice President of Apps and Games, Mike George. “And with discounts of up to 10 per cent when you buy Coins in bulk, this is a great way for customers to save money when they buy apps, games and in-app items.”

It seems Amazon will expand the uses for Amazon Coins at a later date, but it isn’t clear whether the online retail giant will eventually allow them to be used to make purchases on the standard Amazon websites.

“We will continue to add more ways to earn and spend Coins on a wider range of content and activities.”

You can buy Amazon Coins via the Amazon website with a bundle of 500 costing £4.80 as the more you buy the bigger the discount. 1,000 Coins cost £9.50, 2,500 are £23, 5,000 are £45 and the largest packet of 10,000 Coins costs £90.

All Coins are immediately deposited in your account and have no expiration date.

Amazon Coins launched in the US in May and Amazon offers Kindle Fire users 500 Coins (equivalent to $5) as launch present.

Kindle Fire app developers will not be affected by the introduction of Amazon Coins and will continue to receive 70 per cent of revenues.

“Now customers in the UK can also purchase a broad range of Appstore content using Amazon Coins,” added Jorrit Van der Meulen, Vice President of Amazon Kindle. “We are continuously working to enhance customers benefits and Coins is a great new feature that we know they will love.”

PS4 UK launch apps will include BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport

The PS4 UK launch app line-up will include BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport, a service that isn’t available on the Xbox One from launch.

BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport will both be available for the PS4 when it launches next Friday, November 29.

SixthAxis managed to get its hands on a UK PS4 console ahead of launch and discovered the PS4 TV and film services will include BBC iPlayer, Demand 5, IGN and BBC Sport from launch.

Unfortunately, there’s no sign of Netflix, Lovefilm, NowTV, ITV, 4oD or BlinkBox at the moment, but Sony may well announce further app availability before the PS4 UK launch next week.

The PS4 is already available in the US, as it launched on November 15, two weeks ahead of the UK release date. Sony has yet to officially release a full list of apps for the UK PS4 console.

The Xbox One launched today, November 22, in 13 markets across the world, including the UK.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced the full line-up of Day One apps for the console and revealed BBC iPlayer would not be available.

As well as the much-loved likes of Netflix and Lovefilm, the Xbox One also features rival on-demand services like blinkbox, Now TV and Wuaki.tv.

Demand 5, 4oD, Eurosport, TED and Crackle channels have also all be confirmed, with Machinima, MUZU TV and Twitch finishing the launch app line-up.

“We set out to make the Xbox One the all-in-one games and entertainment hub for your home,” explained Marc Whitten, Xbox Chief Product Officer. “The one system that offers the best entertainment experiences and apps.”

Whitten added that the above list of Xbox One apps is merely the first wave arriving for the next-gen console. The BBC did say they are working to bring the iPlayer app to the platform.

"While we are working to bring BBC iPlayer to Xbox One in the future, we have no further details to share at this time,” said an official BBC spokesperson. "BBC iPlayer is already available to audiences on over 1,000 devices and platforms in the UK.”

Xbox One teardown reveals huge fan, easy repairability

The Xbox One goes on sale today, and it’s already been cracked open to reveal what’s going on inside. The answer: something big.

Microsoft experience all manner of problems during the life of the Xbox 360 thanks to insufficient cooling. It led to the infamous 'Red Ring of Death' issue and millions of pounds worth of fixes and replacements for the company.

It’s not making the same mistake twice, judging from a recent teardown of the Xbox One by repair specialist iFixit.

Among the assorted PC-grade components, the teardown revealed an absolutely huge cooling fan which, in conjunction with a heatsink, should prove the right amount of heat dissipation for the device’s CPU - and then some.

At 112mm in diameter, the Xbox One’s cooling fan is bigger than its off-the-shelf 2.5-inch 500GB hard drive, and dwarfs the PS4 equivalent by 27mm. Considering the PS4 is accepted to be the more powerful device, this either seems like overkill on Microsoft’s part or foolhardiness on Sony’s.

Other points of note gleaned from the teardown - the Xbox One is extremely easy to get into and repairable, with many off-the-shelf PC components and standard screws, resulting in an 8 out of 10 repairability score.

There’s also a speaker hidden within the unit itself, which is rather odd.

It’s worth noting that the PlayStation 4 also received an 8 out of 10 repairability score from the same site, so smaller and more technical doesn’t necessarily have to mean more awkward when it comes to your next generation console.

Apple testing iPhone 6 with 4.9-inch display

If the latest reports emerging from China are to be believed, then Apple is currently testing a 4.9-inch display for the iPhone 6.

The fact that Apple is testing larger-screened devices has been well established by some reputable news sources over the past year or so. Back in September, for example, the WSJ reported that Apple was testing devices with a range of screens between 4.8 and 6-inches in size.

More recently there have been reports emanating from Japan that the iPhone 6 will feature a 5-inch display.

This latest report from Chinese website C Technology (which accurately predicted a number of features of the latest iPhone launch) claims that both the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C will be superseded by larger models next year. The iPhone 6 will apparently sport a 4.9-inch display, in keeping with those earlier rumours, while the next mid-range iPhone will get an unspecified size boost.

Both the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C feature the same 4-inch display that was introduced with last year’s iPhone 5. These were only marginally larger (longer, in fact) than all of the previous iPhone screens, which had been a squat 3.5-inches up to that point.

Any move to a 5-inch device (or thereabouts) would be a considerable jump for Apple. It would, we suspect, necessitate a completely new iPhone design with much slimmer bezels and an even thinner body if it’s to retain its precious one-handed usability.

Samsung ordered to pay Apple $290m in damages

A jury in the US has ruled that Samsung infringed on a number of Apple patents and has ordered the Korean manufacturer to pay its rival $290 million in damages.

The latest round of the high-profile Apple vs Samsung patent dispute, an eight member jury in California has deemed that the Samsung Galaxy S4 manufacturer unlawfully infringed on a number of Apple’s smartphone and tablet patents and intellectual design properties and as such should pay $290 million (£1179.5m) in damages.

The ruling it the latest sizeable chunk of cash Samsung has been forced to pay Apple, after further patent disputes recently saw the tech giant ordered to hand nearly $600 million to its leading competitor on the portable gadget market.

Although the £290 million damages ruling its almost $100 million lower than the $380 million fee Apple had been seeking, it is considerably higher than the $53 million Samsung said that it would be willing to pay.

Despite Samsung’s best last minute efforts to force a retrial, the jury today came to their verdict days after the case started to be heard.

During the two companies’ arguments, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, took to the dock to declare Samsung’s original Galaxy S handset a blatant copy of the early iPhones and Apple’s patented technologies and designs.

Discussing the first time he saw the original Samsung Galaxy S, Schiller stated: “I was quite shocked. They went and copied the iPhone.”

He added that Samsung’s blatant copying “weakened the view that the world has for Apple” and stated that the patent infringements caused consumers to “question our innovation and design skills in a way that people never used to.”

Talking on the work Apple put into the first iPhone and subsequent patents, Schiller stated: “There were huge risks [with the first iPhone]. We had a saying inside the company that it was a ‘bet-the-company’ product.”

He added: “We were starting to do well again in iPod [...] Then here we’re going to invest all these resources, financial as well as people, in creating this product.”

Bookies back PS4 to outsell Xbox One

With the two consoles set to hit UK retailers over the next seven days, bookmakers have pegged the PS4 to be odds-on favourite to win the battle of the next-gen gamers.

Opting for the cheaper of the two next-gen rivals to take top honours this festive period, bookmaker Paddy Power has revealed that the Sony PS4 is 1/8 on to outsell its Xbox One branded rival within the UK this festive period.

The firm favourite with the bookies, the PS4, which will set wannabe owners back £349 and goes on sale in the UK on November 29, will require gambling fans to place an £8 bet in order to win just £1 in return if it goes on to outsell the Xbox One this year.

Conversely, those looking to have a little flutter on the Xbox One to be the year’s top selling next-gen console will receive odds of 9/2, meaning a £1 bet will recoup a further £4.50 in winnings if it indeed proves to be the leading console.

With the Xbox One release date to see the 360 follow-on go on sale at midnight, the console’s price has been seen as a potentially stumbling block for many gaming fans. Although coming bundled with a second-generation Kinect peripheral, the Xbox One price has been set at a premium £429.

"It's been all one way traffic in the betting," a Paddy Power spokesperson said in a recent statement. They added "It looks as though it's game over for Xbox in the eyes of our punters at least."

While the PS4 looks set to win the console wars, Activision’s Call of Duty: Ghosts is 1/5 favourite to be the video game chart’s Christmas number one.

With the cross-platform FIFA 14 second favourite to take honours, facing odds of 4/1, the PS3 and Xbox 360 locked GTA 5 appears to be hampered by its lack of next-gen availability, struggling to a 5/1 third favourite position for festive chart success.

Xbox One Game Review

Hands-on from E3 2013

A lot can happen in eight years. When it launched the Xbox 360 back in 2005, Microsoft was the underdog, Xbox was a games-focused brand and the idea of streaming movies and TV to a console was beyond most peoples' horizon. Now 2013 sees Microsoft in arguably the strongest position of all the console manufactures, with its new console presented as the centre of a more general connected entertainment experience - as they like to call such things these days.

This isn't simply a games console, but the centrepiece of Microsoft's living-room ecosystem, bringing games, sports, TV, music and movies together in one device, working seamlessly with tablets through Xbox Smartglass and with voice and gesture controls through the second-generation of Kinect. It certainly does a lot of stuff, and much of it very well, but the big question we're left with at this year's E3 is whether it's stuff that people really need or want, and whether a little of the focus has been lost on games.

Xbox One

Xbox One - Hardware

In the flesh, concerns about the physical design of the Xbox One pretty much evaporate. While it is larger than the current Xbox 360 it doesn't have the infamous 'coffee table' dimensions of the original Xbox, and the new matt/gloss black two-tone finish looks pretty good. Pair it with the new compact and angular Kinect, and the two look like they should be part of a home entertainment setup, The Xbox One doesn't announce itself as a gaming device, and will happily settle in with the PVR or Blu-ray player below your flat-screen TV.

There's not much to see at the front - just the Blu-ray drive and the Xbox logo button - but the rear carries a healthy selection of ports, including an HDMI input and output, two USB3 ports, a digital optical output and Gigabit Ethernet. It also sports dual-band 802.11n WiFi, with a 5GHz option for optimal speed.

Read 10 things we learned about the Xbox One at E3 2013

Xbox One 2

We still don't know everything about what's inside the unit. We know it runs an 8-core AMD Jaguar x86 CPU, but not the exact specs or the clock speed. We know it runs an AMD 7000-series Radeon GPU, believed to be similar to the Radeon 7790 and running 768 shader units within 12 compute units, but full details and confirmation have yet to emerge.

Microsoft has stated that there's 8GB of DDR3 RAM installed, along with a 500GB hard disk, and we know that around 3GB of that RAM is used to handle the system's three operating systems - one to run games, one to run entertainment, comms and background tasks, and one to switch between them. All this leaves the Xbox One trailing Sony's PS4 in terms of specifications, but at this stage it's almost impossible to say what impact this might have in terms of in-game graphics or gameplay.

Read our Xbox One vs PS4 comparison to see how the two compare directly.

Smartglass 1

Xbox One - The User-Interface and Smartglass

The Xbox One has been designed from the ground-up to be controlled not just by a conventional joypad, but through voice and gesture commands with Kinect and through touch with a SmartGlass companion app. The overall UI will be familiar to anyone who has used Windows 8 or Windows 8 Phone, to the extent that you can pin and unpin games and services as you like on the homescreen, or run apps like Xbox Music or Skype in a reduced Windows Snap view while you do something else in the main view.

Microsoft's initial Xbox One reveal demonstrated many of the UI and media playback features, and we haven't personally seen them explored in much detail at E3. We have, however, seen Smartglass at work on the Xbox One, with Microsoft keen to demo new Smartglass 'experiences' that let you check your progress and achievements in the games you're playing, plus Smartglass remote control features for the Xbox One's TV functions, complete with an attractive and info-packed TV guide. How this will work with UK TV services remains to be seen.

Smartglass 4

There's also talk of using a Smartglass app on your tablet while on the move to purchase DLC content that downloads before you get home, and of other features - like friends' achievements and in-game videos, designed to engage you in the world of Xbox even when you're not playing on the console itself. Most of all, Smartglass will have a bigger role to play in actual games on Xbox One. If you're not using a Smartglass app to call in artillery fire on the zombies in Dead Rising 3, you're using it to sculpt the ground for your gameworld in Microsoft's new create and customise gaming title, Project Spark.

LG vows to address TV spying concerns

Following claims that its Smart TVs were spying on users’ viewing habits, LG has vowed to launch a firmware update to address privacy concerns.

Earlier this week a British-based blogger discovered that his LG Smart TV was transmitting data on his viewing patterns back to the Korean manufacturer, even after he had deselected a settings option entitled “collection of watching info.”

Having been quick to respond to the claims, LG has now stated that it will launch a firmware update for its Smart TVs, ensuring users’ privacy and data is no longer encroached upon.

“At LG, we are always aiming to improve our Smart TV experience,” an official spokesperson for the company announced in a statement issued to TrustedReviews . “Recently, it has been brought to our attention that there is an issue related to viewing information allegedly being gathered without consent.

“Our customers’ privacy is very important part of the Smart TV experience so we began an immediate investigation into these claims.”

Detailing its findings, the company added: “Information such as channel, TV platform, broadcast source, etc. that is collected by certain LG Smart TVs is not personal but viewing information. This information is collected as part of the Smart TV platform to deliver more relevant advertisements and to offer recommendations to viewers based on what other LG Smart TV owners are watching.

“We have verified that even when this function is turned off by the viewers, it continues to transmit viewing information although the data is not retained by the server. A firmware update is being prepared for immediate rollout that will correct this problem on all affected LG Smart TVs so when this feature is disabled, no data will be transmitted.”

With the privacy concerns extending not only to viewing habits but users’ data stored on externally attached USB drives, LG has revealed it will also cease collection of such information.

“It has also been reported that the names of media files stored on external drives such as USB flash devices are being collected by LG Smart TVs. While the file names are not stored, the transmission of such file names was part of a new feature being readied to search for data from the internet (metadata) related to the program being watched in order to deliver a better viewing experience,” the company’s spokesperson said.

“This feature, however, was never fully implemented and no personal data was ever collected or retained. This feature will also be removed from affected LG Smart TVs with the firmware update.”

LG concluded that it “regrets any concerns these reports may have caused and will continue to strive to meet the expectations of all our customers and the public. We hope this update clears up any confusion.”

All Blockbuster UK stores to close before Christmas

All Blockbuster UK stores will be closing before Christmas, as the chain admits it is unlikely to find a new buyer.

Managers at Blockbuster stores across the country have been told that every outlet will close, with dates tipped all before Christmas.

According to MCV sources, the closure news was delivered by Blockbuster UK operations manager Dave Potter over the phone.

The gaming site received word from three separate Blockbuster stores not included in the original list of 72 that they will close before the year is out.

Sources suggest that all Blockbuster UK stores will shut up shop by December 15.

The rumour was then seemingly confirmed by a commenter on the site who is a Blockbuster manager themselves.

“Store Manager in one of the remaining stores myself. Message from Dave Potter said administrators are 99 per cent sure no buyer will be found. Two dates given for closures 13th & 20th,” added commenter Chillisteak.

No official information has yet come from Blockbuster UK or administrators Moorfields Corporate Recovery.

The closures will mean 2,000 jobs lost across the 264 Blockbuster UK stores. Just in time for Christmas.

Blockbuster UK announced it was entering administration for the second time late October. It originally entered administration in January due to increased competition from online retailers.

The company was sold to private equity firm Gordon Brothers Europe in march, but has since re-entered administration.

Gordon Brothers Europe said it had “striven to turn around the historically loss-making company by restructuring the business, investing significantly in strategic marketing activities and negotiating with the landlords of its retail outlets.”

“The company also tried to develop a new digital platform but was unable to broker a licensing deal with Blockbuster UK’s parent company in the US. Regrettably, the months since the acquisition have also coincided with a period of poor trading performance across both rental and retail sales.”

Xbox One digital games prices announced

The Xbox One digital games prices have been revealed, alongside each title’s install sizes.

Microsoft briefly put the UK Xbox One digital games store live, but has since reverted to the older version of the site that directs gamers to the Microsoft Store to pre-order the titles.

That didn’t stop Videogamer from grabbing the full list of prices and install sizes of the Xbox One Day One titles.

It seems the average price for a digital copy of a third-party title will set you back a whopping £54.99, although this is the same official RRP offered in the Microsoft Store.

Blockbusters like Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 will all be listed for the premium price.

First-party, Microsoft Studios titles like Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome and Dead Rising 3 will cost £44.99, but bizarrely Zoo Tycoon retails for the slightly pricier £49.99.

You may think your 500GB Xbox One hard drive will keep you going for quite a while, but when you see some of the install sizes for these digital games, you may have to think again. For example, Forza 5 is a 31.76GB install on its own.

Day One PS4 bundles now being offered by Amazon

Sony PS4 bundle

Amazon's latest PS4 bundle includes Killzone

With just a week till launch, yet more Day One PS4 bundles have been made available, with Amazon the latest retailer to offer the console in time for launch.

Despite having last week revealed that any new PS4 pre-orders would not be shipped until after the Christmas period, Amazon has now added a new Day One PS4 bundle to its stock list, with the next-gen console coming packaged with a copy of Killzone: Shadow Fall.

While the standard PS4 console will set wannabe owners back £349, the Day One Killzone bundle has been handed a slightly more costly £384.99.

Although the PS4 bundle is being offered for Day One delivery, with the November 29 PS4 release date now just a week away, Amazon has revealed the console will only be available for shipping to certain areas of the country.

“When you place a pre-order for an item offering Release Day Delivery and you select either First Class or One-Day Delivery (available for eligible postcodes only), Amazon.co.uk will dispatch your order prior to the release day, with the intention that it arrives with you on the actual release day,” the company has stated.

Although short, the list of ineligible postcodes appears to include only the very northern most points of Scotland and areas of Ireland.

With the Xbox One release date to see the Microsoft branded console go on sale at midnight, the Sony PS4, already available in the US, will hit UK stores next week.

Fallout 4 “Survivor 2299” teaser website updated with mysterious code

The Oscar Zulu transmission from Fallout 3

The Oscar Zulu transmission from Fallout 3

The Fallout 4 “Survivor 2299” teaser website has been updated with a new Morse code signal and an official Bethesda Vault-Tec logo.

The Survivor 2299 Fall out 4 teaser site is still a mystery, but it has now been updated with a rather cryptic audio Morse code signal.

Of course, eagle-eared Fallout fans have already decoded the message to say “CQ CQ CQ DE OZ SE AS”. Now that may not mean much to the average reader, and certainly not us, but it roughly translates to:

“Call Any Station, Calling Any Station, Calling Any Station, This is From OZ (Oscar Zulu), Please Wait.”

This may well be in relation to the Oscar Zulu radio station in an unmarked quest from Fallout 3, and that’s pretty much the only connection to Fallout 4 the teaser site is giving us so far.

However, the site has also been updated with the official Vault-Tec logo from the Fallout series, which makes the Fallout 4 teaser site seem much more legitimate.

A Fallout 4 trademark was filed by Bethesda for Europe earlier in the week, which incorporated merchandise and digital media as well as the game itself, suggesting Bethesda is gearing up for a big launch.

An official Fallout 4 game announcement is tipped for December 7 at VGX, previously known as the Spike VGA Awards.

Other blockbuster titles have been announced there in recent years, including Elder Scroll V: Skyrim and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

Square Enix is also allegedly poised to launch the Xbox One and PS4 Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, a next-generation port of its successful 2013 Tomb Raider reboot.

What’s interesting is that the timer on the Survivor 2299 page is counting down to December 11, rather than the VGX awards date.

Microsoft promises Windows Phone Store will rival iOS and Android by end of 2014

Windows Phone 8 devices

Will Windows Phone Store really be able to catch up?

Microsoft has promised the Windows Phone Store will have an app library to rival iOS and Android by the end of 2014.

Windows Phone Store lags way behind the app availability of the iOS App Store and Android Google Play Store, which has always been a sore point for the platform.

Of course, the Windows Phone store does have the staple apps like Facebook and Twitter, and this week finally received its own Instagram app but still lacks the sheer volume available on rival platforms.

However, Vice President and Manager for Windows Phone Program Management Joe Belfiore, took to Twitter to announce that the store will be a proper Google Play and App Store rival by the end of next year.

“We’re all gonna look back on the end of 2014 as the ending of the app-gap for Windows Phone. The 3rd ecosystem is decidedly here!” tweeted Belfiore.

We’re not sure quite how Microsoft aims to boost its app library by that point, but it will be an interesting thing to watch over the next 12 months.

Although Windows Phone is probably already the third ecosystem behind Android and iOS as it is more popular than BlackBerry, it definitely can't yet equal the service offered by the competition.

In June, Apple announced that the iOS App Store has reached its 900,000 app milestone, whilst in July the Google Play Store hit 1 million Android apps.

At the Nokia World event in October, Nokia reiterated Windows Phone’s position as the third ecosystem.

“I think it is fair to say Windows Phone is the third ecosystem,” explained Bryan Biniak, Nokia’s Vice President and GM of Developer Experience. “We started with about 7,000 applications several years ago, now we have 175,000 applications in the store, but more importantly what we are seeing is the trajectory of device sales growing quarter after quarter.”

Xbox One Pre-orders: Best deals and bundles available now

Xbox One pre-orders have been in hot demand, and with just hours to go until the console hits retailers' shelves there are still plenty of sellers vying for your Xbox-bound cash.

With the first round of Xbox One pre-orders having sold out in double quick fashion, Microsoft released new advanced stocks causing retailers to once again all line up to take your Xbox One pre-order cash. Due to the increased retail competition, however, there are plenty of good Xbox One pre-order deals to find and fortunately we've done all of the hard work for you.

"We are humbled and gratified by the tremendous interest in Xbox One from game fans everywhere,” Yusuf Mehdi, Vice President of Xbox Marketing said while confirming the November 22 Xbox One release date earlier this year.

“We sold out of our pre-order supply faster than at any other time in our history and we are on path to have the biggest launch of an Xbox ever. We look forward to celebrating with millions and millions of gamers this holiday.

Where can you pre-order the Xbox One? Read on to find out.

Amazon

Having previously listed the Xbox One price at a lofty £599.99, Amazon has now brought its Xbox One pre-orders in line with the console's official price tag.

Offering no discernible promotions or freebies, the Amazon Xbox One pre-orders are now facing lengthy delays, with the retailer confirming any new Xbox One orders will now not be shipped until after the Christmas period.

"Orders placed from November 13 may not be delivered before Christmas," a statement on the company's Xbox One orders page states.

Suggesting that the company could introduce improved pricing or bundle deals ahead of launch, Amazon has paired its Xbox One pre-orders with the company’s pre-order price guarantee.

The company states: “Order now and if the Amazon.co.uk price decreases between the time you place your order and the release date, you'll be charged the lowest price.”

Xbox One pre-orders: Amazon

Blockbuster

The first to have offered Xbox One pre-orders in the UK, ailing retailer Blockbuster was allowing gamers to secure their new Xbox console ahead of launch before entering administration for a second time.

Less than a week after being unveiled, the Xbox One broke Blockbuster's pre-order records. James Morton, Head of Games at Blockbuster stated: “We are delighted by the huge number of pre-orders that we have received so far for the new Microsoft console."

Now, after concerns the defunct retailer was not going to be able to honour all Xbox One pre-orders, it has stated that expectant gamers will get their next-gen console after all.

"We are pleased to announce that both Microsoft and Sony have set aside Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Day 1 consoles for Blockbuster customers who have valid pre-orders,” an official statement from the company stated.

Game

Another retailer to have jumped on the Xbox One pre-order bandwagon early, Game is still offering the Xbox One, even a day before it is available in stores.

Giving gamers one last chance to snap up a Day One Xbox One, Game will today, November 21, make a final 200 consoles available to eager gamers.

"From 12 noon, @GAMEBoxpark will have 200 Xbox One Day One Consoles with FIFA 14 available to order," the retailers Tweeted.

"Consoles will be available on a first come, first served basis – once 200 people are queued up or have ordered, that's it!"

Zavvi

Having taken a bold approach to its Xbox One pre-orders, former high street giant turn online retailer Zavvi originally speculated that the final Xbox One price would be £399 and charged early pre-orders at that price.

No the online retailer is claiming 'Limited Day One' availability remaining so act fast if you want the next-gen gamer at launch.

Asda

Supermarket giant Asda is another leading retailer to offer Xbox One pre-orders.

Limiting customers to one Xbox One console apiece, Asda has inadvertently suggested that Xbox One stock might be in short supply at launch. With launch stock known to be limited, what better reason to pre-order the console ahead of time?

Earlier this week the supermarket chain added addition Day One Xbox One consoles to its online store but stocks were in short supply.

Google Play Newsstand launches, coming to iOS in 2014

Nexus 5 with the new Google Play Newsstand

Nexus 5 with the new Google Play Newsstand

The Google Play Newsstand has arrived on Android as a new news and magazine subscription hub akin to the iOS version.

Google has launched its own news and magazine subscription portal in the form of the Google Play Newsstand, merging the Currents app within it.

The Android Newsstand allows users to subscribe to magazines and other publications within one app, similar to the way the iOS Newsstand functions.

However, Google also includes its Currents service within the Newsstand, offering a Flipboard-esque presentation of all the latest news from a variety of web sources.

With Google Play Newsstand, discover more of the news and magazines that you care about all in one app on your Android tablet or phone. Enjoy breaking news and in-depth articles featuring audio, video and more. From sports, business, cooking entertainment, fashion and more – now get both free and paid news plus subscribe to vibrant full HD magazines, all in one place”, reads the app blurb.

Newspaper subscriptions available through the Google Play Newsstand include The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. Often the newspaper subscriptions are offered with a 30-day free trial so you can give them a whirl before committing to a subscription.

Google states its Newsstand has around 1,900 free and paid for publications such as GQ, Cosmopolitan and Rolling Stone.

For iOS there is already a dedicated Current app offered for free for iPhones and iPads running iOS 6.0 or higher, which allows you to buy and peruse “magazine-like” editions on your device.

There will be a fully-fledged Google Play Newsstand arriving for iOS in early 2014, or so Google has promised. It will then directly compete with the in-built Apple Newsstand, which offers a very similar service.

Sainsbury’s to stop selling boxed games and consoles online

Sainsbury’s has announced it will cease the sale of boxed games and consoles via its website, and will only offer them in store.

The UK supermarket will stop selling physical entertainment products online in favour of an on-demand digital model.

Sale of physical products via the Sainsbury’s Entertainment website will be non-existent from March 2014.

Along with videogames and consoles, Sainsbury’s Entertainment’s new digital model will apply to books, DVDs, CDs, and Blu-rays.

“We see that the online opportunity lies in digital products, with physical music, books, games and films sold in our stores”, said a Sainsbury’s spokesperson. “This move is in line with wider industry trends towards on demand entertainment, and part of our focus on the fast-growing download and streaming market.”

Sainsbury’s will continue to fulfil all existing pre-orders due to launch before March 15 2014, but will only take new orders until the end of February.

This will include the Xbox One and PS4 pre-orders made with the store. The Xbox One release date is tomorrow, November 22, while the PS4 will launch in the UK on November 29.

Motorola offers financing on Moto X

Motorola has started offering a new interest free financing option for its Moto X smartphone over in the US.

The Motorola Moto X has won a lot of praise over in America for its fresh approach to a number of smartphone design and interface issues, but it seems the company is also keen to overhaul the way we pay for our phones.

Motorola calls the scheme Motorola money, and it involves purchasing the Moto X outright on a monthly basis with no initial fee. What’s more, if you pay the $549 balance off within 6, 12 or 18 months, you won’t have to pay any interest.

You might think that this sounds like a mobile contract, but you can be sure that any mobile network will take its fair slice of a monthly agreement.

Of course, if you do exceed this payment period you’ll be in for some hefty additional charges, with an APR of 28.99 percent. Ouch.

This financing deal is obviously subject to credit checks, as it’s actually a deal between Motorola and Comenity Capital Bank.

With the Motorola Moto G now wowing UK customers (it gained a rare 10 out of 10 in our recent review), it’s worth pondering whether a similar financing deal could be established here.

Of course, with a starting price of less than £150, this budget alternative might not have people clambering for a line of credit in quite the same way as the Moto X. But then, every little helps.

Apple already runs its own financing options, but it'll be interesting to see if this method takes off with other Android manufacturers.

Xbox One will get YouTube app at launch after all

The Xbox One is set to launch tomorrow, November 22, and it will do so with the assured availability of a YouTube app.

It might sound like a no-brainer to have the most popular video service on your brand new console - especially if that console has pretensions of being your one-stop media hub. But that didn’t seem like a dead cert up until recently.

No Xbox One YouTube app had been confirmed, either by YouTube or Microsoft. Then there was that whole messy Windows Phone 8 dispute.

You see, Windows Phone 8 still doesn’t have a proper YouTube app. Microsoft and YouTube resolved to work together on one, but the app that Microsoft eventually put out contravened YouTube’s policies on advertising, prompting its immediate withdrawal.

Any suggestions of bad blood between the two companies appear to have been put aside, though, with YouTube’s announcement of an Xbox One app over on its official blog.

What’s more, the app is fully on board with Xbox One’s unique capabilities. Besides a natty new interface (with gaming videos pushed to the fore, it seems), you can also control the app by saying 'YouTube' from anywhere in the app, followed by commands such as 'play,' 'pause' or 'fast forward' for the appropriate effect.

It’s also possible to employ gestures to browse through the vast stock of YouTube videos. Simply reach up and "grab the screen" (presumably not literally) to scroll through videos, then use your hand to pick the one you want. Or, you know, just use the controller.

All of this is possible, of course, thanks to the Kinect camera and mic system that will come with every Xbox One console, enabling hands-free navigation of its Windows 8-derived OS.

Of course, there’s still no confirmation of a YouTube app for Sony’s PS4, and it's already out in the US.

Misfit Shine Gadget Review

What is the Misfit Shine?

The Misfit Shine enters a rather crowded fitness tracking market with a selling point that will stand it apart from the competition – it’s fully waterproof. It’s also an attractive all-metal disc that can be worn anywhere on your body using a dinky little magnetic strip that holds the Misfit Shine in place.

It was launched as an IndieGoGo campaign and achieved its $100,000 project goal 9 ½ hours after it launched. At close, the Misfit Shine had raised its goal eight and a half times over, which just goes to show how interesting the device is.

But can the £99 fitness tracker stand out against its popular rivals?

Misfit Shine – Design and Features

One of the most striking things about the Misfit Shine is its design. Made from aerospace grade aluminium with a distinct groove running around the middle for using the Misfit Shine’s various accessories, it is small, light and compact. Misfit’s choice of material means the Shine only weighs 9g on its own, or 16g with the included wrist strap.

The company, Misfit Wearables, is co-founded by former Apple CEO John Sculley, and there is definitely a touch of Apple in the design of the Shine, especially its simplicity and clean lines.

Misfit has made sure the Shine can be worn anywhere on the body, and even supplies both the sports band and clasp as standard with the Misfit Shine in the UK from John Lewis. The clasp is a rubber loop with a magnet on one end that folds over to couple with the back of the Shine. You can attach this to any item of clothing, even a swimsuit or shorts as it is completely waterproof to 50 metres. This is also pretty handy if you forget to remove it from your clothes and it happens to take a washing machine trip.

The sportsband is a rubber watch strap that the Misfit Shine simply pops into and is designed to look much more like jewellery than your average fitness tracker, which is one of its key benefits. There’s also a leather strap and a necklace option to purchase separately if you feel the need.

Its waterproof nature and the fact it is so very light means you can pretty much forget about the Misfit Shine when you’re wearing it, especially when it’s strapped to your wrist.

However, it is useful to remember, any fitness tracker worn on your wrist isn’t going to be as accurate as one worn on your clothing as you tend to move your arms more than any other limbs, or you could stop moving them altogether, such as when you’re gripping a bag strap – both of which can cause inaccurate results. This is why Misfit includes the clasp for attaching the Shine to your clothing, which is especially useful when at the gym.

When in sleep mode, the Misfit Shine looks like it has no display at all, but with a double tap on its face you’ll be presented with a ring of LED lights around the edge, which are used to indicate your current goal progress and the time.

Each LED light is an interval of five minutes or 5 per cent completion of your customised goal. It can be a little difficult at first to work out what time it is (the hour is a solid LED but the minute indicator flashes), but you soon get used to it. Your goal progress is shown in a ring that runs clockwise with your sporting activity until the whole ring of lights is completed, which is a simple but effective way to keep tabs on it without having to look at the app.

On the rear of the Misfit Shine is a handy 12 logo, to show you which way up the fitness tracker should be placed in your watch strap for accurate clock readings.

The Misfit Shine connects to the Shine app for iOS devices via Bluetooth 4.0 LE, which doesn’t require pairing. Misfit assures us there’s an Android app coming “in the next few weeks”, but there hasn’t been any joy there as yet.

Bluetooth LE keeps the power consumption low and combined with the fact the Misfit Shine uses a standard cell watch battery with a battery life of at least 4 months, you’ll be using it for ages without having to charge it or replace the battery.

There are some features that are lacking in the Misfit Shine, like an altimeter to count the number of stairs you climb, which features in upcoming trackers like the Fitbit Force.

Misfit Shine – Tracking and Apps

The Shine app is a very simple but effective way of monitoring your daily fitness activity. Periods of activity are shown in colour coded panels that show the type of sport you are doing and low, medium and energetic patches of activity.

There’s a highlights panel that offers you a look at your daily milestones, broken down into a handy activity chart and the aforementioned coloured blocks. You can also take a look at a weekly overview of your activity, which also compares your achievements to the previous weeks.

Overall, the Misfit Shine is very accurate and can tell when you are performing any of its recognised activities – walking, running, cycling or swimming. It does tend to be far more precise when worn on your clothes, as when on your wrist it can suggest you were more active than you actually were – but that sometimes isn’t a bad thing.

Within the app you can not only personalise your activity goal, but also let it know where you’re wearing the Misfit Shine for more precise data gathering and whether you want the fitness tracker to display the clock or progression lights first.

You can also utilise the Misfit Labs Activity Tagging. This allows you to triple tap the Misfit Shine to tell it you are doing a specific activity for more accurate readings. Although this feature is still in Beta, you can use it to tell the Shine when you’re sleeping, cycling, swimming, playing tennis, basketball or football and the results are far more accurate – if you remember to triple tap before you start doing them.

The Shine app also presents information on the amount of steps you’ve taken, calories burnt and distance covered in a single day or whole week.

What is disappointing about the Misift Shine is its sleep monitoring functionality. Unless you tell it you’re going to sleep using the Activity Tagging it won’t monitor your sleep pattern whatsoever. We always forgot to triple tap before we fell asleep so we’d wake up with no data for our slumber.

When you do remember, it lets you know how many hours of deep sleep you’ve managed to get in between patches of tossing and turning. How accurate this data actually is is very hard to calculate, but they are interesting statistics to peruse in the morning.

As the Misfit Shine uses Bluetooth LE you won’t need to pair it with your smartphone or tablet. When you enter the app, the data automatically updates and fills in all the fitness tracking information since you last logged in. it doesn’t matter whether that’s a week or 5 minutes ago, it is all updated regardless.

It is very speedy to update, which is a bonus. We will say the data provided is a bit limited, but that’s pretty standard for what is basically a glorified pedometer like its competition. The app is laid out in a straightforward and accessible way and unless you’re a proper fitness freak it is more than sufficient for those looking to monitor their activity.

Should I buy the Misfit Shine?

The Misfit Shine is a great activity tracker but is a little more expensive than some of its competitors and currently has limited smartphone and tablet compatibility if you don’t have an iPhone or iPad. It’s still a strong contender, but you might still want to consider some of the alternatives.

At £79.99, the Fitbit Flex is another successful fitness tracker that offers a great app, a 4 – 5 day battery life and is water resistant if not entirely waterproof. It is a bit basic though and lacks a full display, altimeter and can’t even tell the time by itself. It works with (select) Android devices as well as iOS though.

At the top end of the price bracket is the £129.99 Nike Fuelband SE that is specifically optimised for Apple’s device range. It uses Bluetooth LE and is now water resistant and more flexible for a more rugged device. It can offer a lot more information on your wrist than the Misfit Shine, but still lacks an altimeter.

The Jawbone UP works with iOS and Android devices and is the same price as the Misfit Shine at £99. It offers detailed feedback via an app and has a vibrating alarm function alongside sleep monitoring. You can even take pictures of your meal to convert it into calories with the Jawbone UP.

Verdict

If you’re looking for a fully-functional and completely waterproof fitness tracker, the Misfit Shine is a great choice, especially for the fashion conscious. The lengthy battery life just sweetens the deal.
