The successor of the LG G2 should feature the LG Odin chipset
LG is reportedly testing its own mobile chipset to include in its smartphones and tablets for 2014, an octa-core CPU codenamed Odin.
The supercharged 2.2GHz octa-core LG Odin processor is being prepared now and should feature in the successors to the LG G2 and LG G Pad 8.3.
LG is currently improving the speeds of its quad- and octa-core versions of Odin to 2.2GHz. It should feature Cortex-A15 cores clocked at 2.2Ghz and a big.LITTLE configuration with four Cortex-A15s and four frugal Cortex-A7s clocked at 1.7GHz.
A big.LITTLE configuration would mean the LG Odin chipset will be very power efficient and not be a drain on the battery life of future tablets and smartphones.
The LG Odin was originally tipped to feature in the LG G2 with clock speeds of 1.7GHz and 1.2GHz respectively for the A15 and A7 cores, but it seems LG has decided to hold back the chipset for future devices.
The LG G2 has a 2.26Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, like its rivals the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Google Nexus 5.
Although the octa-core Odin is reserved for future smartphones and tablets, the quad-core version should appear in LG Electronics devices like Smart TVs.
Samsung has already equipped one version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 with its octa-core Exynos 5 processor, and other manufacturers will no doubt follow in 2014.
If LG does use its LG Odin chipset in future smartphones it would mark a move away from a reliance on third-party manufacturers.
LG could save money and make more profit by manufacturing its own chips and it certainly has the facilities to do so.
It will have to be pretty powerful to compete with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 and the Exynos equivalent, so we’ll be intrigued to see what the LG Odin can do next year.
