LG has trademarked the name "LG Glasstic" as its own smart glass technology.
The new Glasstic trademark filing suggests LG is experimenting with its own wearable tech to compete with the likes of Google Glass.
LG filed the trademark on November 14 and specifically outlines that the name could be used for mobile phones, spectacles (optics) and clocks.
Unfortunately the trademark doesn’t offer enough information to draw a full conclusion as to what the Glasstic device will be yet.
Several of the big technology companies are reportedly working on their own smart glasses, including Sony and Samsung which have both launched smart watches in the past six months – the Samsung Galaxy Gear and Sony SmartWatch 2.
Most recently Nissan released a teaser trailer for its own Google Glass rival, the Nissan 3E, which is due for a Tokyo Motor Show unveiling.
Major Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo has already unveiled its wearable Intelligent Glasses, which it showcased at Ceatec 2013. The Intelligent Glasses are capable of translating text in real time.
Back in March, Sony patented a dual-lens Google Glass rival complete with a prototype design. The device was spotted in two separate patents outlining the HMD technology will be for both eyes and feature adjustable screens.
Last month Samsung design patent revealed a pair of smart “sports glasses” with integrated earphones, allowing users to take calls and listen to music during their workouts.
The Google Glass smart glasses are due to become available on the general market early in 2014. The device is currently being tested by developers who will create a variety of apps for the HUD system.
Google is tipped to price Glass at around $200, but it is bound to be a lot more for the technology.
