The Sony PlayStation 4 has proved to be a huge success in its opening weekend, selling more than one million units in just 24 hours.
What’s most impressive about this feat is that he PS4 is available in only two regions at present - the US and Canada. A European and South American launch will not follow until November 29.
"PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal," said SCE president Andrew House of the news.
Contrast the PS4’s performance with the Nintendo Wii U and the difference is stark. Nintendo’s struggling console took one week to reach just 400,000 sales in the US.
The PS4’s initial sales success is even more impressive when you consider the performance of its immediate predecessor, the PS3, which struggled to just 197,000 US sales in its first two weeks on sale. Of course, Sony experienced huge production issues with the PS3 that severely limited its early potential.
Having said that, Sony has been experiencing fresh production issues with the PS4. Some users have reported overheating issues with their new console, while there have also been a handful of non-functional units.
Sony has estimated that 0.4 percent of all PS4 consoles are affected by these technical issues - though of course it’s the disappointed customers that have been shouting the loudest on Amazon.
Either way, it’s an impressive result for Sony. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft’s Xbox One can match it when it launches later this week.
