PS4 stock “bit tight prior to Christmas” for retailers

Sony has discussed PS4 stock concerns, saying stock will be a “bit tight” before Christmas for anyone who hasn’t pre-ordered the next-gen console.

Addressing concerns over PS4 stock, it seems everyone who has already pre-ordered their console will receive it before Santa comes, but store stock beyond that will be limited.

Speaking to Edge, Sony UK boss Fergal Gara, says “demand for PS4 is not really a concern,” especially with over a million pre-orders already registered. However, the company may struggle to fulfil that demand for people buying directly on or after the PS4 release date.

“We’re right in the fine detail of volume planning right now. What I will say is that over the launch window of the first two to three months there’s going to be ample stock and we’ll catch up,” explained Gara. “Pre-Christmas is huge and anyone that has pre-ordered a PS4 now is almost certain to get it before Christmas, and there will be more on top of that – barring any problems with ships sinking or whatever else that could go wrong that’s out of our control.”

Sony announced that PS4 pre-orders have topped one million units during its Gamescom 2013 press conference, with earlier reports from retailers suggesting that pre-orders placed after August 6 may not arrive on the November 29 release date in the UK.

“There is a very significant volume in the market on day one, but shipment two is within days of that so what we’re expecting is a big surge and then lots of follow up volume.”

“Our advice to gamers is that if you want one, that’s fantastic, we’re delighted, but get your name on the preorder list of partner retailers because that puts you first in line for any delays and any follow up volume. So it’ll be a bit tight prior to Christmas but there will be ample PS4 in those first few weeks.”

It seems there is a possibility of the average gamer walking into a retailer on or after the PS4 release date actually picking up Sony’s next-generation console, but we imagine there will be queues miles long on the eve of November 29 full of expectant gamers.
