Sharp has taken the wraps off a brand new Windows 8 tablet, which boasts a number of unique features to help it stand out from the crowd.
The Sharp Mebius Pad is on display at the CEATEC show currently being held in Japan. Arguably the stand-out feature is its 10.1-inch display, which produces an impressive 2,560 x 1,600 resolution.
That makes for a pixel density of almost 300ppi, which is well ahead of other Windows 8 tablets such as the recently announced Microsoft Surface 2. Such tablets tend to max out at 1920 x 1080 (1080p).
In fact, the Mebius's resolution is the same as the current 10-inch tablet screen res champ, the Google Nexus 10.
It's not just sharpness that sets the Sharp Mebius Pad display apart, either. It also uses IGZO technology, which is a type of thin-film transistor (TFT) that offers superior power efficiency, making it ideal for high resolution displays.
The Mebius Pad will use a quad-core Intel Atom processor to run Windows 8.1, but arguably more exciting is the fact that it will also adhere to Sharp's exacting build quality standards. As has become standard for modern Japanese-designed smart devices, the Mebius Pad will be both dust and water-proof.
This should make it perfectly suited to business use, as should the optional stylus.
It might never leave Japan, where it will launch next year, but the Sharp Mebius Pad is one of the most interesting Windows 8 tablets we've seen in quite some time.
