The voice actors that play the three GTA 5 protagonists have spoken out against critical commentary suggesting the game glamorises violence.
Despite the existence of FPS titles like Call of Duty or Battlefield, GTA games have always had a reputation for being an used as an example of what’s wrong with society.
However, the three chaps who voice the three GTA 5 characters, Trevor, Michael and Franklin have spoken out in defence of the game.
“Anyone who has any conception at all about the game and hasn’t played them should go play the games before they open their mouths,” said Ned Luke who voices Michael. “The biggest misconception is that it glamorizes violence. It really doesn’t. If you look at my character, Michael, he’s rich, but he’s a miserable man.”
GTA 5 already has 20 million gamers playing it, despite launch day issues, and has received critical acclaim suggesting it is the best in the series.
Steven Ogg, who plays the slightly psychopathic Trevor, suggests those who are anti-GTA titles should take a look at television and film content, which regularly presents the same issues.
“The hypocrisy drives me crazy. It just sets the wrong focus,” said Ogg. “Why not talk about gun control? Why not talk about parenting? Why not talk about the lack of family values? There are so many other thing to talk about. Look at what’s on TV.”
“Video games are just an easy scapegoat.”
Franklin is voiced by Shawn Fonteno, a previous member of a gang himself. Fonteno admits that he has partaken in some of the activities portrayed in GTA 5, and the game certainly isn’t an advocate.
“I know a few people that live that kind of [violent] lifestyle and when they play GTA they can relate to it,” said Fonteno. “It has an impact to the point that they’re happy that they can just play it in the game and not have to relive it in real life. And that’s the big key thing with this, man. It’s just a video game.”
“People already have it in their mind that GTA is for kids because it’s a game. Then they hear about the violence and they’re instantly going to attack because it’s a game… Once they get the game in their hands, they’ll see. It says it big as day –Mature. It’s not for the kids to go get.”
