Xbox One Day One Edition controller
Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One day one download will take around 15 – 20 minutes to download before play can commence.
Gamers will be required to download the day one update before they can start playing with the Xbox One.
The large day one download was confirmed by Chief Xbox One Platform Architect, Marc Whitten during an interview with IGN.
“We are optimizing Xbox One so that the day one update is as fast as possible. While we’re still finalising the details, we expect that the download will take between 15 and 20 minutes for most users”, said Whitten.
Worryingly, Whitten doesn’t expressly indicated whether that 20 minute download time includes the time needed to install the day one update as well, meaning gamers could be in for a lengthy wait before they can actually play Xbox One titles.
The necessary day one update will be required to iron out the last firmware tweaks. The update is expected to deal with Microsoft’s decision to drop online check in requirements and its changes to DRM policies.
Microsoft previously said that the day one update was to bridge the “difference in manufacturing schedules versus software schedules.”
The Xbox One release date has been set for November 22 in 13 markets. Originally, the Xbox One was due to be released in 21 countries worldwide, but eight European countries saw their Xbox One release date delayed until 2014 due to software issues for local language and voice support.
Retailing for £429 in the UK, the Xbox One comes bundled with the new Kinect motion gaming peripheral, a single Xbox One Wireless Controller, a 4k capable HDMI cable and Xbox One Chat Headset.
In the UK, the Xbox One will ship prior to the PS4 release date, which has been scheduled for November 29, with Sony’s next-gen console shipping without the PlayStation Camera as standard.
