Amazon will launch its Fire TV set top box in Europe today, with a UK release date imminent. The streaming device is taking aim at rival kit from Apple, Google and Sky.
Released in April in the U.S. the online retail giant’s set top box offers streaming access to Netflix as well as the company’s own Amazon Instant Prime video service, giving it an edge over its competitors.
However, there is no word on what UK specific platforms the Fire TV will come with. It’s unclear if BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD and Demand 5 will play nice, although details are expected to be revealed at the IFA tech trade show in Berlin later.
Fire TV also comes with voice control, ASAP for instant streaming of shows it think you’ll want to watch and, best of all, gaming support. The latter works in conjunction with the Fire gaming controller, which is also expected to launch on these shores. Gaming remains a key miss on Apple TV, something which Cupertino is thought to want to address when it eventually gets round to releasing a new version of its set top box.
Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but is expected to be a straight dollar to pound conversion. That means the $99 box will most likely set you back £99 when it lands in shops in the next few weeks.
