Microsoft has accidentally made mention of Windows 9, its forthcoming desktop OS, ahead of an official announcement.
Over on Chinese social network Weibo, Microsoft China recently launch a post asking the question "Microsoft’s latest OS Windows 9 is coming soon, do you think the start menu at the left bottom will make a come back?"
As spotted by Cnbeta, the post was even accompanied by a Windows 9 logo. Naturally, the post has since been removed.
While this little slip doesn't offer too much of a heads-up on Windows 9, it does confirm that the follow-up to the poorly received Windows 8 is "coming soon."
Of course, with Microsoft set to hold a launch event for its new Windows OS on September 30, that was pretty much known already. The company will also reportedly distribute a 'Technology Preview' of the OS currently known as Windows Threshold some time in September or October.
Windows 9 is set to address many of the widespread criticisms that have plagued Windows 8 since its release in 2012. As the above leak suggests, it promises to reinstate the start menu, and it will also do away with the Windows 8 Charms bar that proved so incongruous to traditional mouse and keyboard users.
As for exciting new features, Windows 9 is eventually expected to incorporate Microsoft's Cortana voice-activated personal assistant.
