Google may be preparing to unveil the first of its affordable range of ‘Android One’ smartphones at an event two weeks from now.
The company has sent out invites to the media for a launch in India on September 15, but have not yet disclosed its purpose.
Reports claim the announcement will be centred around the forthcoming cheaper raw Android handsets aimed at improving the uptake of smartphones in emerging markets.
The devices made by little-known manufacturers Indian manufacturers lie Spice, Karbon and Micromax will be under $100 (under $60) and will not have any of the custom UIs added by OEMs like Samsung and HTC.
The firm has promised more details closer to the date.
Google announced the entry-level initiative at its Google I/O conference earlier this summer.
The firm is expected to work with manufacturers in order to keep the costs of manufacturing down, but has said it will not subsidise the manufacturers.
The project ties in with Google’s efforts to promote connectivity in less developed nations, aided by its Project Loon Google X ‘moonshot.’
Facebook is also making a drive of its own with its Internet.org non-profit dedicated to bringing connectivity to the two-thirds of the world unable to access the internet.
