LG has announced the first OLED TVs with 4K screen resolutions, with the company boldly calling the technology "the future of television."
The firm said a 65-inch model will go on sale in Europe, North America and South Korea, while a 77-inch model will arrive later in the year.
However, due to the vastly increased price of OLED panels, compared with LCD technology, the sets will arrive at a serious premium.
The 65-inch model will cost 12 million Korean won, which is around £7,100.
The announcement comes during a period when the cost of 4K LCD panels is coming down significantly, allowing most users to consider jumping on board for the first time. LG's announcement bucks that trend.
Whether LG is able to experience success with OLED televisions at such an inflated price point remains to be seen, but it'll certainly be an uphill battle.
The company does seem confident. In a press release, the president and CEO of LG’s Home Entertainment Company Hyun-hwio Ha called the TV’s “a bona fide game changer”
He said: LG 4K OLED TV is the pinnacle of technological achievement and a new paradigm that will change the dynamics of the next generation TV market,” said Hyun-hwoi Ha, president and CEO of LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “As the next evolutionary step in display technology, OLED will play a major role in reshaping our industry. I feel confident when I say that 4K OLED is a bona fide game changer.”
The benefits of an OLED panel include deeper blacks, brighter colours and less motion blur, according to LG.
