GTA 5 lands as digital Xbox Games download

With three million copies of the game having already been sold in the UK alone, developer Rockstar has launched GTA 5 as a digital download through Xbox Games.

With a digital GTA 5 download having been available for PS3 gamers since launch last month, the Xbox bound download has only just landed, four weeks after the game hit retailers and generated more than $1 billion in just three days on sale.

Priced at £49.99, the Xbox Games hosted digital edition of GTA 5 is no cheaper than its disc-based counterpart, and measures in at a sizeable 7.63GB.

Although the digital PS3 edition of GTA 5 was plagued by a raft of streaming issues at launch, a problem which still persists, it is not currently known if the downloadable Xbox 360 version of the game is affected by the same issues.

The release of the Xbox Game GTA 5 download has coincided with the latest GTA 5 update, with patch 1.04 set to address a range of bugs within the chart topping game.

According to Rockstar, the latest GTA update “is expected to fix the remaining instances of issues that have caused vehicle purchase loss and will also enable the functionality through which we'll be providing this GTA$ stimulus cash to players."

With GTA Online having launched on October 1, the online element of the Grand Theft Auto franchise has caused a number of bugs to appear, with many gamers reporting problems with lost characters, vehicles and all manner of other glitches.

Apple increases iPhone 5S production as it slashing iPhone 5C numbers

Apple has readdressed its iPhone intentions, with the Cupertino based company set to increase iPhone 5S production rates by 75 per cent.

Seemingly highlighting the gulf in interest between the company’s two latest smartphone offerings, while iPhone 5S production is set to be almost doubled, it has been suggested that production rates of the colourful iPhone 5C are to be reduced by 35 per cent.

According to Display Search analysts NPD, iPhone 5S production rates are set for a 75 per cent increase in the coming weeks, a move which should help rectify the stock shortage issues which continue to plague the flagship phone.

With no iPhone 5S pre-orders having been offered, the iPhone 5 follow-on was in short supply at launch last month, with the gold iterations of the handset still hard to come by.

“The diverging fates of Apple’s iPhone 5s and 5c have been widely reported, and our latest channel checks confirm that Apple indeed has cut back 5c production by 35 per cent and increased 5s production by 75 per cent,” an NPD analyst report has stated.

Despite continued struggles for the iPhone 5C, the NPD analysts have suggested that the iPhone 5S is still an attractive proposition for consumers.

“While the fate of the iPhone 5c is still to be determined, the iPhone 5s is doing quite well, indicating that Apple still has a strong hardcore base for its premium devices,” a note from the NPD analysts stated.

They added: “The market’s expectation of what the iPhone 5c would be was very different from how Apple wants to position itself. It was not Apple’s intention to develop a product targeting the “low-cost” smartphone segment. However, rumors about iPhone 5c being “cheap” were circulating as early as Q3 2012. The fact that the iPhone 5c is nearly identical to the iPhone 5 – and is not cheap – disappointed some consumers.”

According to the research, Apple had originally planned on offering the iPhone 5C at a cheaper price but was forced to increase the fee for the phone shortly before launch to meet profit margin requirements.

“Apple is a profit-driven company, and decided to raise their price in order to hit its profit target when Chinese carriers cut their subsidies on the iPhone 5c.”

Google Play event set for October 24, no Google Nexus 5 expected

Despite Google issuing invites to an October 22 Google Play event, the search giant has suggested the meeting will not see the Google Nexus 5 unveiled.

With the Google Nexus 5 widely expected to enter the realms of reality later this month, following the arrival of the first Google Play event invites last night, speculation was rife that the Google Nexus 4 follow-on could be just days away from unveiling.

Now, however, a number of reports have cited the Nexus 7 manufacturer as reporting that the New York based event next Thursday will not see any new hardware introduced, with the event instead set to act as nothing more than a meet-and-greet and look at the company’s latest digital store options.

With the invites stating simply “Join us for a night out with Google Play,” the search giant has stated that the event will look at “music, movies and games.”

Although a Google Nexus 5 release date might not be announced , it is expected that Google Play event will take a more detailed look at the upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.

Earlier this week a new look Google Play Store leaked, with the revised in-store setup set to be introduced alongside the upcoming software update.

The Google Nexus 5 is widely expected to be a direct challenger to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5S when launched later this month. Earlier this week the upcoming handset leaked on the Google Play Store alongside a $349 price tag.

Recent Google Nexus 5 rumours have suggested that the phone will line up with a 2.3GHz quad-core processor in tow alongside an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera, a 5-inch 1080p Full HD display and a 3000mAh Lithium-Polymer battery.

Oculus Rift gaming headset likely to come to market running Android

The consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality gaming headset is likely to run off Google's Android operating system, according to the company's Chief Technology Officer.

Legendary games developer John Carmack, who is heading up the device, said the headset will probably take the form of a standalone Android system that boasts a smartphone-like processor.

In an interview with Engadget the man responsible for Doom, Quake, Rage, Wolfenstein 3D and others said: "The way I believe it's going to play out is you will eventually have a head-mounted display that probably runs Android, as a standalone system, that has a system-on-a-chip that's basically like what you have in mobile phones."

Carmack also confirmed that a new developer kit is under construction, which will make it to those keen to create immersive gaming experiences before the finished product goes on sale next year.

In a year where Microsoft and Sony are both launching next-generation consoles, the Oculus Rift has stood out as perhaps the most intriguing solution, due to its fully immersive, head-mounted display that appears to offer the best hope for the long-promised future of virtual reality gaming.

Those who've gone heads-on have overwhelmingly given Rift the thumbs up, but the device isn't quite ready for the big time just yet. It still has some kinks to work out, primarily the head tracking elements, according to Carmack.

He added: "A lot of the work at Oculus has gone into working out better position tracking. The tracking side is something that there hasn't been as much of a push for and we're frantically working on a lot of that, because that is one of the other really large issues. But we expect that the next developer kit will have higher resolution and position tracking addressing some of these significant issues."

The company is yet to announce its retail strategy for getting the headset upon the bonces of eager gamers, with Carmack saying there is debate within Oculus regarding how to handle it.

Apple denies it is able to read iMessage content

Apple has once again responded quickly to new allegations from security researchers who have claimed the company could easily spy on users of its iMessage IM platform for iOS and Mac OS X devices.

The company moved swiftly to play down fears after Quarkslab pointed out, because Apple controls the end-to-end encryption of all content sent within iMessage, it would be simple for them to access content.">Quarkslab pointed out, because Apple controls the end-to-end encryption of all content sent within iMessage, it would be simple for them to access content.

As everything is handled in house, Quarkslab alleges, Apple could choose to "change the key" at any time in order to read iMessages or even pass the content over to governments who make security requests.

The group says Apple isn't doing it at the moment, but could if it wanted to. The Cupertino-based company sort-of conceded through a spokesperson that it would be possible, but said it has zero plans to do so.

An Apple spokeswoman told PCMag: "iMessage is not architected to allow Apple to read messages. The research discussed theoretical vulnerabilities that would require Apple to re-engineer the iMessage system to exploit it, and Apple has no plans or intentions to do so."

Earlier this year, Apple was also summoned to defend the security of its iMessage platform against allegations the company was compliant in handing over user data for NSA security requests.

By the same token, the company has also received praise with the Drug Enforcement Agency claiming Apple's encryption makes the messages "impossible" to intercept.

White Google Nexus 5 leaks suggesting multiple colours at launch

Images of a white Google Nexus 5 have leaked online ahead of the phone’s formal unveiling, suggesting the phone will launch in a pair of colour schemes.

With the traditional black Google Nexus 5 having been caught on camera countless times in recent weeks, newly leaked images have shown the handset’s packaging, with a white Google Nexus 5 clearly depicted against the blue box.

With the Google Nexus 5 expected to be officially unveiled later this month, the newly surfaced white Google Nexus 5 pictures are the first sign of a lighter toned rendition of the Android 4.4 KitKat powered device being readied for market.

Although last year’s Google Nexus 4 was made available in a white finish, this iteration of the phone was only introduced in a limited run, and not for months after the original black model had made it to retailer.

The white Google Nexus 5 image appeared courtesy of Underkg.com before being hastily removed, a potential sign of its validity.

Recent Google Nexus 5 rumours have hinted that the phone could be a new powerhouse of the smartphone scene, with a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU lining up alongside 2GB of RAM, the option of 16GB or 32GB of internal storage and Google latest operating system.

Further Google Nexus 5 specs tipped for inclusion will reportedly see an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera line up alongside a 1.6-megapixel forward-facing snapper and a 3000mAh Lithium-Polymer battery.

Set to be manufactured by LG, the Google Nexus 5, will feature a 5-inch 1080p Full HD display as well as the now commonplace, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and 4G connectivity options.

Electrolux Design Lab 2013 won by swarm of tiny cleaning robots

Imagine being able to flop on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon safe in the knowledge that hundreds of mini flying robots were cleaning your home from top to bottom.

This is the future according to the winning concept of this year's Electrolux Design Lab. Adrian Perez Zapata from Columbia designed automated cleaning system "Mab" for the competition.

Inspired by the way bees work together to pollinate flowers, his idea features tiny devices that clean surfaces by touching them with a drop of water. They're controlled by a central system - Mab - which scans the house looking for dirtier areas.

"My concept Mab only requires a short initial configuration to function autonomously, so you could arrive home and see a swarm of mini-robots roaming around cleaning independently," said Adrian.

"This means you could sit back and relax, as you observe with great astonishment the little Mab ‘fairies’ working their magic autonomously."

The theme of this year's award was 'Urban Living' with 1700 ideas for breakthrough products, accessories, consumables and services submitted by design students from 60 countries competing for a 5000 euro prize.

Adrian's design impressed the judges because of its practicality in everyday life and the new angle he looks at robots from.

"This year’s winning concept renews the idea of looking at the robot, seeing it not as one unit that mimics a person, but instead as something inspired by the magical logic of nature’s collaborative efforts and group intelligence," said Stefano Marzano, head of the panel and chief design officer at Electrolux

"The Mab is an innovative concept which could be relevant to minimize the daily cleaning efforts of consumers as well as businesses, while maximizing the results."

Adrian's mechanism also bagged the People's Choice Award after receiving 40 per cent of the public vote on Electrolux's website. Luiza Silva from Brazil scooped second prize with her Atomium 3D food printer and third prize went to Jeabyun Yeon from Korea for his Breathing Wall.

Apple to bring TouchID fingerprint reader to iPad and Mac

An Apple patent has surfaced suggesting the Cupertino-based company could be getting ready to bring its TouchID fingerprint scanner to both iPad and Mac devices.

Following the formal unveiling of the iPhone 5S last month with a TouchID fingerprint reader incorporated within the handset’s home button, it has been widely suggested that the sensor will be integrated within the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 .Both tablets are expected to be unveiled at next week’s October 22 launch event.

Now, however, newly leaked Apple patent have suggested that as well as hitting iPhone and iPad models, the new biometric security measure will also be introduced to the company’s iconic laptop ranges.

Referred to within patents as an “active fingerprint sensor,” the TouchID sensor patents have suggested that future iterations of the technology could see the fingerprint reader sit beneath a display panel, allowing it to be more seamlessly integrated within a range of devices.

With the iPod touch another device on the TouchID’s potential hit list, Apple’s patent filing, which has come to light through PatentlyApple, has listed a range of possible future inclusions.

According to the iMac and iPad mini maker, the TouchID sensor could be incorporated within “a tablet computing device, a notebook computer, a personal digital assistant, a desktop computer or a portable media player.”

Although the iPhone 5S’s TouchID fingerprint reader has caught some consumers’ imaginations and caused some manufacturers to follow suit, such as HTC with the fingerprint scanner including HTC One Max, it has not been without its issues.

With security specialists picking apart a number of safety flaws with the biometric security measures, a number of workarounds have already been discovered, allowing unpermitted intruders to circumnavigate the fingerprint reader to gain access to the phone’s data.

Is a Dyson silent hairdryer on its way?

Dyson could soon be adding hairdryers to the list of domestic devices it's revolutionised, a range of leaked patent applications has suggested.

The British company - famous for for its range of bagless vacuum cleaners - has applied for patents for a silent hairdryer.

The Telegraph has uncovered six patents detailing the mechanism of a "hand held blower with heater" which can also be used for drying paint.

It's not the first time Dyson has stepped away from vacuums. It has already had huge success with its Airblade hand dryer and fan range, including the Dyson Hot and Cool, however it is rare that the firm reveals details of a product before its launch.

While traditional hairdryers can make more than 70 decibels of noise to remove water from hair, the Dyson model would draw less fluid in and use a network of tubes in its handle to focus the air using a more compact fan.

Diagrams of the product show it with two large horizontal cylinders connected by a pair of thinner vertical tubes, although the hypothetical sketch is not necessarily how the final device will look.

Air that is is sucked into the new dryer is passed through a looped labyrinth of ducts running through the handle and main tube to remove water.

It's believed the twists and turns of the air's path will lead to a quieter drying system. They're also lined with felt or foam to give additional soundproofing and reduced vibration.

The patent said: “Traditional hairdryers are essentially an open tube with a fan for drawing fluid into the tube. This makes them noisy unless a big slow fan is used, but then a big motor is required which increases weight.

“As less fluid is drawn in, the motor of the fan assembly can be smaller and lighter in weight, the noise produced by the fan assembly can be reduced as there is less flow thorough the fan, this can result in a smaller and or more compact hairdryer which uses less power.

“The noise of the hairdryer is reduced by having a long fluid flow path, a coiled, looped, curves, s-shaped, zigzagged fluid flow path and frequency attenuating lining material.”

Despite requesting the patents, Dyson is not confirming the development of the quieter domestic good.

"Dyson holds over 3,500 patents and patent applications for over 500 inventions," an official Dyson representative told TrustedReviews when pressed for details. They added: "Our 1,500 engineers constantly develop new technology and regularly file patents."

Fujifilm X-E2 Camera Review

Fujifilm has announced its latest retro-styled CSC in the shape of the Fujifilm X-E2. It builds on the successful Fujifilm X-E1, which we gave a 9/10 back in March, with over 60 improvements and refinements. We attended the product launch and were able to take a closer look at Fujifilm’s latest to assess the improvements first-hand.

Watch our Fujifilm X-E2 hands-on video

One of the first areas of improvement is the X-E2’s sensor. Although the resolution of the sensor remains as it was on the X-E1, the chip itself is different.

The camera employs the same 16.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor as seen previously in the Fujifilm X100S, and as such sees several improvements over the X-E1 in this area. Not only does the sensor feature an X-Trans pixel array, but it also features over 100,000 phase-detect pixels on the sensor and as a result promises vastly improved AF performance.

Alongside the improved AF performance arrives improved processing speeds thanks to the new EXR Processor II, a feature that promises to half the time taken to process files. This pair of enhancements alone will no doubt impress Fujifilm fans as the X-E1 already boasting some strong performance figures.

In terms of features that remain, the X-E2 inherits a similar OLED electronic viewfinder as found in the X-E1. The EVF retains the same 2.63m-dot resolution, yet features an improved refresh rate of 50fps, up from 20fps.

The rear of the camera is another area of improvement, with the previous 2.8 inch, 460k-dot monitor making was for a much more impressive 1040k-dot, 3-inch display. It’s worth noting, however, that the screen does sit flush to the body and is lacking in touchscreen functionality, a feature often required by the target market.

Completing the range of new features is the addition of Wi-fi connectivity. Although it doesn’t allow for remote control of the camera, unlike some of its other cameras in its class, it does facilitate one-press image transfer to a compatible smartphone.

First Impressions

On the whole, you have to be impressed with the X-E2. Although the X-E1 is a fantastic camera, it wasn’t perfect and there was certainly room for improvement in the second-generation model.

The good news is that Fujifilm has listened to the feedback and come up with over 60 improvements, and although not all of those 60 improvements are entirely worthwhile, some of the more major changes promise an even better camera in the X-E2.

Whether or not it will triumph in the competitive advanced CSC market, however, remains to be seen.

The X-E2 is due on sale at the start of November, and will be price at £799 body only, or £1199 as part of a single lens kit.

Xbox One and PS4 Battlefield 4 delays considered by DICE

Battlefield 4 delays were almost needed for the game’s arrival on the next-gen Xbox One and PS4 consoles, developer DICE has revealed.

With the two eagerly awaited consoles set to hit retailers next month, DICE has revealed that it considered delaying the hotly anticipated first-person shooter for next-gen gamers due to the difficulties involved in developing a game alongside the new platform.

We've been very aggressive with Battlefield 4 in that we want to be out at launch with the next gen consoles," Patrick Bach, Executive Producer on Battlefield 4 said in a recent interview with GamesIndustry. He added: "I think people might not grasp how hard that is, to develop a game at the same time as the hardware.”

With Ubisfot’s high-profile next-gen release Watchdog having this week having been pushed back until 2014, Bach has claimed that DICE considered doing the same with Battlefield 4 in order to give itself more time to perfect the title.

“We've been struggling quite a lot to keep up with the changes we've seen - both sides need to adapt and you end up being late. Everything is very complicated. Battlefield itself is a really complicated game, so it doesn't make our lives any easier,” he stated.

"So we knew we'd set ourselves a tough challenge, but people on the outside seem to think that because there are going to be launch titles, it's easy. What are we spending all our time doing? They don't understand how hard it is! Talking about Watch_Dogs, I don't blame them, there are times when we've considered doing the same thing - luckily we've overcome those hurdles and thought about what the game actually is on the next gen

“We've had an excellent team working that out at the same time as the game itself, which is a big struggle. We can see that a lot of the next gen games coming are, arguably, lesser when it comes to the scope of features because of this problem."

Earlier today another next-gen launch game was confirmed to be facing lengthy delays, with the PS4 exclusive Driveclub now set to launch in early 2014 as opposed to alongside the console on the November 29 PS4 release date.

Facebook changes teenage privacy settings

Facebook has changed its privacy settings for teenagers, lifting the previous restrictions imposed upon those under 18-years-old.

Anyone aged between 13 and 17 will now be able to share their posts with anyone on the internet, after Facebook changed its privacy settings for teenagers.

Previously, teenagers’ posts could only be viewed by their friends or friends of friends, depending on their chosen privacy settings.

Now, they’ll be able to share their thoughts with a much wider audience, which Facebook feels will improve their experience of the site.

“Teens are among the savviest people using social media and whether it comes to civic engagement, activism, or their thoughts on a new movie, they want to be heard,” reads the Facebook announcement. “While only a small fraction of teens using Facebook might choose to post publicly, this update now gives them the choice to share more broadly, just like on other social media services.”

Teenagers can also now enable the “follow” function so that other people who aren’t connected directly to them can choose to have their posts pop up in their news feeds.

The automatic privacy settings for 13 – 17-year-olds will be Friends Only, but as soon as they choose to go public, Facebook will post a quick reminder that the content can be seen by anyone.

“One the one hand, you want to encourage kids to participate in the digital world, but they are not always very wise about how they do it,” said US professor Kathryn Montgomery, a specialist on the effect of the internet on children. “Teens tend to take more risks and don’t always understand the consequences of their behaviour.”

Facebook may be trying to lure more users of this age group to use the site, especially due to the increasing popularity of alternatives like Snapchat.

Lenovo inches a step closer to buying BlackBerry

Lenovo could be about to make a bid for BlackBerry as it signs a nondisclosure agreement in order to gain access to the smartphone pioneer's financial details.

The Chinese computer manufacturer has shown an interest in the Canadian business - famous for its Qwerty keyboard devices - since it announced it was struggling to keep up with the touchscreen-centric market earlier this year.

Lenovo's chief financial officer Wong Wai Ming told Bloomberg in August that the firm would consider a deal with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM). "We are looking at all opportunities, RIM and many others," he said.

He went on to add: "We’ll have no hesitation if the right opportunity comes along that could benefit us and shareholders."

Lenova will face regulatory obstacles if it puts in an offer for the whole of BlackBerry's dwindling empire though.

The whole-company bid would include its hardware unit as well as its secure corporate and government email network and experts claim that the latter service is likely to be sold to a North American business because of security concerns.

Plus, in Canada bids from foreign companies are required to pass a government review to check for economic benefit and security risk if they exceed a certain threshold.

Lenovo is joined by competitors Cisco Systems Inc, Google Inc and Germany's SAP AG, all also showing interest in snapping up all or part of the BlackBerry.

The groups must counter an offer made by private equity firm Fairfax Financial Holdings before November 4 to be in the running.

When contacted, a spokesperson for Lenovo stated that it was policy not to comment on speculation.

Xbox 360 sales top 80 million ahead of Xbox One release date

Microsoft has revealed that over 80 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold since launch, with just a month to go before the Xbox One hits shelves.

According to the company’s internal data, the Xbox 360 reached the 80 million milestone this month, with demand for the console still high.

Although the figure is for “consoles sold to retailers worldwide”, which doesn’t directly correlate to those actually sold to consumers, it does show that there is still demand for the console in the market.

For September in the US, sales of Xbox 360 software reached $401.2 million (£247.9 million). This is the highest September figure recorded since the Xbox 360 launched eight years ago. Of course, this was boosted by the GTA 5 and FIFA 14 releases.

The Xbox 360 has sold 1.6 million units in the US so far this year, but the console was beaten by the PlayStation 3 in sales last month in America. Microsoft’s now ageing console is still the top-selling console for the year.

Despite such strong overall sales figures, that 80 million sales figure is beaten by the original PlayStation, the PS2, the Nintendo DS, Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, Wii and Game Boy Advance. It is still the seventh best-selling console in history though.

The Xbox One release date has been scheduled for November 22 in 13 markets worldwide, with other locations having to wait until next year after release date delays were announced by Microsoft.

Microsoft has already confirmed that Xbox 360 support will continue for three more years after the Xbox One release.

“If you look at Xbox 360 that platform has lasted for seven to eight years and it’s going to go for another three year. It’s incredibly profitable now in the tail,” explained Yusuf Mehdi, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer for Xbox.

“It isn’t just like the day we ship Xbox One, Xbox 360 won’t work. We will continue to support it. In fact, we are going to ship over 100 new games on Xbox 360, so you will still be able to play your games, just not on the same exact box.”

Samsung Galaxy S5 features to include inbuilt eye scanner?

Claimed Samsung Galaxy S5 features have leaked, with an integrated eye scanner tipped for inclusion as a biometric security measure.

One of the more far-out Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours to do the rounds, it has been suggested that the upcoming handset will forgo a fingerprint scanner like the iPhone 5S or HTC One Max, instead favouring an eye scanner as an extra layer of security.

Citing unnamed sources, AndroidSAS has claimed that the Samsung Galaxy S5 features list will see an integrated eye scanner to allow the handset’s owners to unlock their Samsung Galaxy S4 follow-ons, simply by looking at the phone.

Although it is not currently clear exactly how the sensor would work, reports out of Korea have suggested that Samsung will piece together the component itself. As always, we suggested that this Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours is taken with a considerable pinch of salt.

With many having already figured out workarounds for the recently introduced iPhone 5S and HTC One Max fingerprints scanners, it has been suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S5 eye scanner will offer more accurate security measures.

Far from the first Samsung Galaxy S5 rumour to do the rounds, it is widely believed that the future LG G2 and Google Nexus 5 rival will play host to a new, premium metal body akin to that of the HTC One.

On top of this Samsung has already confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy S5, in a bid to compete with the iPhone 5S, will run a powerful 64-bit processor. Making the announcement, Shin Jong-Kyun, Samsung CEO of Mobile recently stated: “Our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality.”

Although the Samsung Galaxy S4 has only been on sale for a little over six months, it has been suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S5 release date will be held in January. It has been reported that the Korean company is pushing forward the launch of its next flagship phone in a bid to combat waning interest in the current model.

Windows 8.1 download: How to upgrade to Windows 8.1

The Windows 8.1 is here, and it addresses several criticisms frequently levelled at Windows 8. But how do you get the thing installed? It's a very simple process, but here's how you do it.

For current Windows 8 users

The first thing we recommend is to make sure you backup any critical data. Chances are nothing will go wrong – these aren't the days of Windows 95 – but between updates is a particularly vulnerable time for a computer.

Next, you need to go to the Windows Store. It'll be on your Start screen, and its icon is a shopping bag. Don't worry, Windows 8.1 is a free update so you won't have to lay down any money to get it.

One the front page of the Windows Store, you should see a banner letting you know that Windows 8.1 is available. Just click on the download link that's part of the banner and the update should start downloading.

It's a hefty download so will take a while, but the program will take it from there.

Alternatively, go to the Windows Update website and you'll be able to download a Windows upgrade assistant program that'll do the job for you.

For users of other Windows versions
Windows 8.1 is only free to current Windows 8 users. If you're using Windows 7, Vista, XP or – god forbid – Windows 3.1, you'll need to acquire a Windows 8 license to get up and running with the new software.

The new version of Windows can be downloaded directly from the Microsoft online store, where it'll cost you £99.99, or £189.99 for the Pro version. There are ways to get it a bit cheaper, though.

Students can buy a license direct from Microsoft for £49.99, or you can get a license from elsewhere. Like any product, deals come and go, but at the time of writing Amazon offers an upgrade license for £60. A search on eBay comes up with licenses from reputable sellers for about £55. However, we would recommend sticking to established 'business' sellers if you're going to opt for an auction site deal.

If you acquire one of these product keys, though, you can't go down the traditional upgrade routes we've already mentioned – those will try and make you buy Windows 8 from Microsoft. What you need (if you don't get an install disc with your license) is the standalone Windows installer.

Microsoft offers an 'upgrade key only' web page that lets you download an installer. This will let you enter a separate product key (ie. License) and download a bootable Windows 8 install ISO, if that's how you want to roll.

However, before upgrading check out our list of the best new Windows 8.1 features

GTA 5 update patch 1.04 now available for PS3

Rockstar has issued a new GTA 5 title update, patch 1.04, for PS3 gamers, aiming to fix issues with vehicle losses.

The 1.04 PS3 patch "is expected to fix the remaining instances of issues that have caused vehicle purchase loss and will also enable the functionality through which we'll be providing this GTA$ stimulus cash to players."

Offered as a title update for PS3 gamers only, patch 1.04 is a 39MB download for GTA 5.

Earlier this month, another GTA 5 update was rolled out, with publisher Rockstar releasing patch 1.03 to address a number of bug fixes within the game.

Although the studio didn't officially reveal the complete ins and outs of the latest GTA 5 update, the latest patch, which comes just three weeks after the game’s official release, is said to close off some GTA Online options which have caused widespread issues.

With a raft of GTA Online problems having plagued the online, multiplayer platforms launch last week, the new GTA 5 update has been suggested to prevent gamers from farming money and constantly repeating the same missions.

Available for both Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers, the GTA 5 1.03 update weighed in as a 39MB free download for Sony’s console, and a 59MB patch for Xbox gamers.

Rockstar has been busy issuing GTA 5 updates and correcting GTA Online problems in recent weeks, with gamers complaining that the online platform has caused characters and in-game progress to be lost for no reason.

Responding to the complaints, a Rockstar spokesperson last week stated: "We are working diligently to identify and correct the causes for these losses, as well as to establish how best to restore any lost progress and value.”

Despite the issues, Rockstar has been a global success, with the game receiving a number of Guinness World Records for its early performances.

Having become the highest grossing day one entertainment release of all time, GTA 5 went on to generate more than $1 billion in sales in just three days.

Sonic: The Lost World Game Review

Available on 3DS, Wii U (version reviewed)

Has there ever been a decent 3D sonic game? Certainly not in the last ten years, if ever, which makes this Sonic Wii U game all the more important. From the Dreamcast’s Sonic Adventure through to 2007’s Sonic the Hedgehog reboot, each 3D effort has either been a mild disappointment or an outright disaster, wrecked by bad controls, poorly-conceived gameplay and hugely irritating storylines. What succour there has been for the hedgehog’s fans has come from his 2D outings, with the mostly 2D Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors being Sonic’s best efforts in modern times. Well, up to now, anyway.

The good news is that Sonic: The Lost World is better than some of his previous 3D games. The bad news is that it’s still not good enough to put the blue blur back on top. Despite pinching more than a few ideas from Super Mario Galaxy it`s no match for Nintendo’s two Wii classics, or even Sony’s Ratchet and Clank series. It’s fun enough in parts to leave you thinking that this could be Sonic’s comeback vehicle, but it’s not consistently strong enough to pull it off.

Watch the Sonic Lost World launch trailer:

SEE ALSO: Best games of 2013

We should give Sonic Team some credit for trying. Whereas recent Mario games have almost jokily put the repetition of the classic ‘Bowser kidnaps Princess’ plot in the foreground, Sonic: The Lost World still tries to work as a new story. This time Dr. Eggman (the Robotnik handle is kaput) has a plan to suck all the energy from Sonic’s world with the aid of six evil arch-fiends known as the Deadly Six. In intervening, Sonic inadvertently discovers The Lost World – a legendary, half-wrecked realm full of new levels, new creatures and new dangers – and then frees the Deadly Six from Eggman’s control. The two old foes become allies in a bid to stop the Deadly Six and save the world.

In between some of the most annoying cut-scenes ever unleashed on gamers (all mercifully skippable), Sonic can wander the hex-structured map of The Lost World, gathering bonus items and enter any unlocked zones. These run the gamut from full 3D levels to old-school 2D levels, with a handful that flit back and forth in between the two styles. Sonic has the usual abilities: a speedy run with a trigger-activated sprint, a charge-and-roll ball form and a jump that can lock onto enemies, allowing you to home in and bosh them repeatedly. He also has a nifty bounce move that can smash through some blocks of scenery, though we were a good halfway through the game before we worked this out.

Sonic: The Lost World

The 3D levels are more than a little reminiscent of Super Mario Galaxy. While some have Sonic racing forwards along strips of terrain or grind-rails, many feature tiny planets or lengthy platforms floating in the Ether above the Lost World, with Sonic bouncing between them using springs or rockets. The 2D sections are more traditional, but some still feature floating worlds that rotate 360 degrees as Sonic frolics around inside them, or long ribbons of scenery that Sonic dashes along on his way.

All the stereotypical platform game settings – deserts, temples, tropical islands, snowy wastes – are featured, but also a few less expected ones, with confectionary, cakes and fruit all putting in an appearance. The graphical style also seems indebted to Super Mario Galaxy. The worlds have that same over-bright, over-lit 3D quality, and Sonic, his friends and enemies wouldn’t look out of place in Nintendo’s game. Maybe a non-Olympic team-up beckons?

When Sonic: The Lost World is good it’s very good. Each section seems to have at least one storming level of the kind that reminds you of the good old days of high-speed Lava chases, Casino-themed rollercoaster worlds and green hills with loops and secret tunnels. There are some amusing bits involving fruit juice shoots, plus Super Money Ball-style zones with a rolling snowball, a brilliant pinball-themed level and a couple of classic springs, chutes and loops affairs.

Sonic: The Lost World

Sadly, it's not all that good all that often, and when it’s bad it’s really annoying. If you like rushing heedlessly and semi-uncontrollably into certain doom then, boy, is this the game for you. Sudden death drops and insta-kill obstacles are littered all over the place. You’re vulnerable to certain critters while jumping and certain critters while rolling, but you often don’t find out which until they’ve killed you, inevitably at the end of an awkward stretch. The difficulty level spikes oddly, so that one of the easiest levels in the game comes right after one of the most challenging. Draconian time limits and limited lives don’t help, though Sonic lifts another Mario idea with a free pass power-up that takes you past the current section if you keep on dying.

Sonic: The Lost World also lacks Nintendo’s legendary polish, with bad camera angles, sudden shifts of camera angle and woolly controls for some actions spoiling the fun. And while it’s great to see the Wii U Pad’s touchscreen and accelerometers put to use to steer a range of rocket-powered vehicles, the controls here once again don’t feel up to the task. Sometimes Sonic: The Lost World just isn’t that much fun.

Much of the rest of the time it just isn’t quite enough fun. Few of the zones really leave much mark on the memory, and where recent Mario and Rayman games have thrown in ideas and gadgets like there might never be another game to use them in, Sonic: The Lost World only seems to have a few to spread around each area.

Sonic: The Lost World

Sonic: The Lost World's multiplayer options are equally disappointing. Play co-op, and one player controls Sonic while another controls a remote-controlled helicopter that drops bombs. Guess which feels like a total bore? There is a two-player race mode with one player on a Wii remote or Pro controller and another on the Wii U Pad, with the latter removing any need for split-screen action. It’s an improvement on co-op, but there aren’t that many courses and the ones that have been picked aren’t actually the best the game has to offer.

Verdict

Sonic: The Lost World is a depressingly inconsistent ride. There are moments here where Sonic seems to be back on top form, but they’re spoilt by a mass of generic, unimaginative levels and some of the most frustrating gameplay we’ve seen in a recent platform game. It might look a little like a Super Mario Galaxy but it’s nowhere near the same league.

Apple Steve Jobs patent upheld by USPTO

The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has upheld 20 of Apple’s patent claims after reviewing what is known as the Steve Jobs patent.

In December last year, the USPTO tentatively rejected all claims under the Steve Jobs patent which relates to a multitouch patent described as a “touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristsics.” Apple’s own lawyers and other have nicknamed it the Steve Jobs patent.

The Steve Jobs patent was challenged anonymously in 2012, which caused the USPTO to re-examine it and rejecting 20 of Apple’s claims under the filing.

It has now been discovered that the USPTO issued a certificate on September 4 stating all of Apple’s claims have been upheld.

“No amendments have been made to the patent. As a result of the re-examination, it has been determined that: The patentability of claims 1-20 is confirmed.”

This is a huge win for Apple, and could cause problems not only for Samsung and Google but other Android smartphone and tablet manufacturers too.

Motorola has already been accused of infringing the Steve Jobs patent with products prior to the Moto X. In August, the Federal Circuit sided with Apple with respect to a key multitouch hardware patent.

"The Smartphone has defined modern life. Be it in the workplace, the home, airports, or entertainment venues across America, individuals are tethered to their handheld devices,” said Circuit Judge Reyna at the time. “Not long ago, users primarily spoke into these devices. Today, fingers tapping, grazing, pinching, or scrolling the screen is a ubiquitous image that reflects how we conduct business, work, play, and live. The asserted patent in this case is an invention that has propelled not just technology, but also dramatically altered how humans across the globe interact and communicate. It marks true innovation."

Samsung was found guilty of Steve Jobs patent infringements in October 2012 by an International Trade Commission judge. This is why Samsung is now suffering the effects of an import ban in the US for select tablet and smartphone models.

New Apple TV tipped for October 23 release date

Ahead of Apple’s upcoming October 22 launch event, retailer Amazon has hinted that a new Apple TV unit will be released next week.

With the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 widely expected to be the stars of next Tuesday’s Apple event, it is now believed that a revised Apple TV could also be set to enter the realms of reality, with the internet connected TV provider seemingly being readied for an in-store release the day after launch.

With a revised Apple TV having long been rumoured for release, the French and German arms of online retailer Amazon are currently listing the existing Apple TV box as out of stock. While not referencing a new model specifically, the latest reports have claimed stock will be available just one day after Apple unveils new products. Amazon UK still has stock of the existing Apple TV.

Earlier this week Apple issued invites to an October 22 launch event, teasingly stating: “We still have a lot to cover.”

While Apple has long been mooted to be working on its own-branded television sets, it is not expected that an Apple iTV unit will launch this year.

Rumours of Apple’s first television surfaced following the publication of Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs back in 2011. In an interview for the book, Jobs claimed he had finally ‘cracked’ how to make an Apple TV work.

In the interview Jobs stated: “I’d like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use.” He added: “It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud. It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it.”

Google teases Nexus Gem smartwatch during Q3 earnings call

Google may have just teased an upcoming smartwatch during the company’s earnings call for Q3 2013.

Talking about the new multi-screen world, Google CEO Larry Page referenced smartwatches, but didn’t give any details as to what type of device the company would be creating.

“People increasingly have more than one device. Screens are proliferating in the home as well as wearable screens like watches and Google Glass”, said Page.

Google has yet to confirm it is working on a smartwatch of its own to compete with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Gear and Sony SmartWatch 2. However, this is the first time Page has mentioned anything of such a device.

The Google smartwatch, currently known as the Nexus Gem, is expected to launch on October 31 after numerous rumours tipped the date.

Smartwatch references aside, Google raked in $15 billion (£9.3 billion) in revenue for Q3 2013 and $2.97 billion (£1.84 billion) in profit. These figures exceeded analyst expectations by a margin.

“Google had another strong quarter with $14.8 billion in revenue and great product progress,” added Page. “We are closing in on our goal of a beautiful, simple, and intuitive experience regardless of your device.”

Despite the launch of the US exclusive Moto X, Motorola cost Google $248 million (£154 million) in operating losses.

Page also announced that 40 per cent of YouTube watchers now access the site via a mobile device, up from 6 per cent two years previously.

More successes for Google lie in the Chromebook market, as the laptops are now sold in 8,000 worldwide locations.

The search engine giant’s Research and Development budget has been increased by around $1 billion, and Page only wants that expenditure to grow. Part of his job requires him to spend on long-term R&D projects, including self-driving cars and Project Loon, Google’s balloon-distributed internet scheme.

PS4 Launch Titles: Driveclub delayed until 2014

Ahead of the console’s upcoming launch, Sony has announced that Driveclub, one of the PS4 launch titles, has been hit by delays.

Previously set to go on sale alongside the PS4 next month, manufacturer and publisher Sony has now revealed that, follow a raft of rumours, a Driveclub release date has indeed been delayed until the early part of 2014.

"SCE Worldwide Studios and the team at Evolution Studios have made the difficult decision to delay the release of Driveclub and Driveclub PlayStation Plus Edition until early 2014," Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios announced via a statement on the official PlayStation blog.

"Driveclub will be a truly innovative, socially connected racing game, but the team requires more time in order to deliver on their vision — and I’m fully confident the game will surpass your expectations."

With the PS4 release date confirmed for November 29 in the UK, Driveclub was set to be one of the console’s leading day-one titles alongside the likes of FIFA 14, Killzone, Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Confirmation of Driveclub delays come just days after Watchdogs was pushed back for all platforms. Having been set to hit both current and next-gen consoles, developer Ubisoft revealed earlier this week that Watchdogs delays would see the game pushed back until 2014.

Discussing the Driveclub delays Yoshida added: "We understand that the delay is disappointing news, but can assure you that the reason we have made this decision is to ensure that when Driveclub launches, it will realize the next gen racing vision.”

Ensuring gamers that the PS4 still has a lot to offer on day one, he stated: “PlayStation 4 gamers will have no shortage of titles to play this year. At launch alone, we have Killzone Shadow Fall, Knack, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, FIFA 14, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, to name but a few, as well as the incredible list of Indie games coming to PS4.

"Driveclub is a really ambitious racing title and the game is looking stunning. The extra time we’re giving the team means the visuals and overall experience are only going to get better. We can assure you that it will be worth the wait."

Nokia smart watch patented and prototyped

Nokia is working on its own smart watch, as evidenced by a recently revealed patent filing and prototype for an innovative multi-screen concept.

The faltering Finnish mobile phone giant submitted the smart watch patent application detailed below in August of last year. It outlines a modular design that can house multiple displays on a single wrist-worn device.

It would mean that users could simply twist their wrist to view different elements of Nokia's smart watch interface.

If that sounds a little fanciful, it's worth pointing out that Nokia got as far as building a prototype for the device, which it calls the Facet, as pictured above. Whilst comically bulky, the mere presence of a working model shows that this patent application was no mere pipe dream.

Of course, the impracticality of such a concept means that we'll probably never see it materialise in retail form. Nor, for that matter, will Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia in recent months improve the chances of seeing a multi-sectioned Nokia smart watch hit the market.

The smart watch market appears to be ripe with as many possibilities as pitfalls, however, as evidenced by Samsung's recent underwhelming attempts to secure an early lead with the disappointing Samsung Galaxy Gear.

The relative success of the Pebble appears to have given heart to many manufacturers that the whole smart watch concept has legs (or should that be straps?). There's an ominous Apple-shaped cloud on the horizon, however, with the long-rumoured iWatch said to be in development deep within Apple HQ.

Sony BDP-S4100 Blu-ray Review

What is the Sony BDP-S4100?

It’s one of Sony’s latest midrange Blu-ray players, positioned between the top-end BDP-S5100 and great-value BDP-S1100. Going by usual model number protocol, you’d expect it to be a step up from the BDP-S3100, but actually they sit parallel – both sell for the same price, but the S4100 offers certain features not found on the S3100 and vice versa. We’ll outline these in the features section.

Sony BDP-S4100

Sony BDP-S4100 – Design

Like all of Sony’s 2013 Blu-ray decks, the BDP-S4100 sports the gorgeous Sense of Quartz design, with a series of sloping facets on the top panel that look a bit like rock crystal. This, combined with the alluring gloss-black finish, give it a fresh, eye-catching appearance. On the sloping front panel you’ll find a tight but legible LED panel, a covered USB port and a disc tray.

Sony BDP-S4100

What also sets the BDP-S4100 apart from the competition is its size – at 360mm wide, it’s slimmer than regular players, which could pay dividends if you don’t have much room to play with in your AV cabinet. The bodywork’s plasticky feel is typical of players at this price, but it’s all firmly bolted together and robust enough to withstand the rigours of day-to-day use.

Sony BDP-S4100 – Connections

The rear panel is identical to that of the BDP-S5100 and houses an HDMI v1.4 output, a coaxial digital audio output, an Ethernet port and second USB port. If you crave a second HDMI output or analogue audio outputs we recommend checking out the flagship BDP-S790, which continues from last year.

Sony BDP-S4100

Sony BDP-S4100 – Features

As we mentioned earlier, the BDP-S4100 and BDP-S3100 are identically priced. The BDP-S4100 adds SACD and 3D Blu-ray playback but lacks the built-in Wi-Fi found on the BDP-S3100, which is why their prices are the same.

So if you want to access the BDP-S4100’s network functionality, you’ll need to connect its Ethernet port to your router or invest in Sony’s UWA-BR100 wireless LAN adapter (£65 approx), which also explains why the BDP-S4100 sports a second USB port on the rear panel but the S3100 doesn’t.

This mix ‘n’ match approach is useful as you can pick the player that best suits your needs without having to pay for extraneous features. But if you want 3D, SACD and built-in Wi-Fi, then obviously the £139 BDP-S5100 is the deck for you.

For a more detailed run-down of Sony’s internet and streaming features, check our reviews of the BDP-S3100 and BDP-S5100 as they’re identical here. But in a nutshell Sony’s internet portal (Sony Entertainment Network) offers an excellent selection of content, with BBC iPlayer, Demand 5, YouTube, LoveFilm and Netflix as the highlights.

Sony BDP-S4100

The deck’s DLNA certification means you can also stream music, video and photos from servers on your home network, with a list of supported formats that includes XviD, WMV, AVCHD, MP3, AAC, WMA, WAV, JPEG, GIF and PNG, all of which can also be played from flash drives and external HDDs (NTFS and FAT32) connected to either USB port. You can’t stream MKV files but you can play them from USB, while DivX and FLAC aren’t supported at all.

Otherwise the BDP-S4100 does everything you’d expect of a Blu-ray player, outputting HD audio formats in bitstream or PCM, upscaling DVD to 1080p and converting 2D to 3D on a compatible TV. There’s no 4K upscaling though.

Google Nexus 5 leaks on Google Play Store

The Google Nexus 5 appeared briefly on the Google Play Store, confirming that an official announcement is not far off at all - as well as the handset's pricing.

Google has been unable to stem the flow of hands-on shots and information on the Nexus 5 from unofficial sources in recent months, but the latest and largest leak of all is of its own doing.

In the early hours of the morning Google seemingly pressed the launch button on its new phone, which was then picked up on by Engadget.

Besides the above image, the listing also revealed a few snippets of information on Google's approach with the phone. "Capture the everyday and the epic" is the tagline the company is going with, which hints at a particularly strong camera.

Perhaps those rumours of a blazing-fast MEMs camera making its way into the Nexus 5 are on the money after all.

Even more interesting here is confirmation of the Google Nexus 5's starting price. The entry-level 16GB model will cost $349, which is the same price as the equivalent Google Nexus 4 model when it launched a year ago. It's also $50 cheaper than a rumour that emerged earlier this week had suggested.

This means that the Google Nexus 5 is highly likely to start for £280 here in the UK.

Other notable points to take from this leak involve confirmation of some of the tweaks evident in Android 4.4 KitKat. There looks to be a greater level of translucency used on the homescreen, such as on the notification bar along the top.

There are also new phone and camera icons.

Suffice to say Google has since removed this mistakenly launched page from the Play Store, but it's a sign that we're not far off an official Google Nexus 5 launch at all.

Best cheap mobile phones to buy 2013

Looking for the best cheap mobile phone to buy? If you can't afford an iPhone or an Android phone like the HTC One, we are here to help you find a budget alternative.

So the wallet can’t stretch to an iPhone 5 or an Android smartphone great like the HTC One or the Samsung Galaxy S4. All is not lost. You can still get the smartphone experience at the fraction of the price. You will have to be prepared to make some compromises.

Until a budget iPhone actually becomes a reality the likes of HTC, Nokia, ZTE, Huawei and Alacatel are amongst the phone manufacturers trying to make cheap Windows Phone 8 and Android smartphones a more attractive proposition.

There are some specs that you will have to do without. Like a Full HD 1080p screen for instance. Yes, you will lose out on the exceptional clarity levels, colour range and vibrancy to make the most of watching video and playing games.

Processing power is another department that usually takes a hit. Don’t expect to get any quad-core power here. It’s all about single or dual-core CPUs. In the snapping department you shouldn't expect iPhone 5 or Sony Xperia Z-like quality.

For under £200, you can still get a decent main and front-facing camera. You can still get access to Google Play and the Windows Phone store to download apps and games. More importantly, all of those features are packaged in a body that doesn’t look like it’s been hit with an ugly stick.

If money is tight and you are looking for a smartphone minus the expensive contract, we’ve rifled through our latest mobile phone reviews to give you the best cheap smartphones to buy right now.

Microsoft launches Remote Desktop app for iPhone and iPad

Microsoft has today released a Remote Desktop app for Apple's iOS devices, allowing iPad and iPhone users to control their PC when away from the screen.

The free app, which comes on the same day Microsoft went public with its heavily-touted Windows 8.1 update, can be used to access a PC by manually inserting the machine's IP address.

iOS owners can access the multi-touch Windows 8 experience in much the same way they would on the native device (to a certain extent, obviously, it's not a virtual OS) and enjoy a secure connection to their documents and applications from their smartphone or tablet device.

Users will also be able to stream video and audio files directly to their iPhone or iPad (or iPod touch for that matter) thanks to the improved compression tech. It'll also allow users to connect up to an external monitor to display presentations from their home PC while at the office.

Naturally the experience will be more at home on the larger tablet displays rather than the 4-inch iPhone handsets, but it'll be a great option for those needing to access important files while on the move.

The launch of Remote Desktop is Microsoft's latest iOS launch, following the arrival of Office 365 this summer. iPhone and iPad users are still waiting, however, for Microsoft to pull the trigger on a full version of the Microsoft Office suite for iOS.

The app is also available for Android devices, but strangely, Microsoft hasn't bothered to roll it out for Windows Phone yet.

You can download the iOS and Android apps from the respective stores. If you've given them a try, let us know your first impressions in the comments section below.

Twitter considering standalone direct messaging app, report claims

Twitter may be looking to revitalise its marginalised direct messaging feature by launching it as a free-standing app, according to reports on Thursday.

The social network may be looking to get in on the action "in the near future" following the explosion of popular messaging applications such as Snapchat and WhatsApp, among others.

Twitter may see an opportunity to entice more users within its ecosystem, while maintaining those who may be using the service less to take their conversations to a less public forum.

It has been quietly modifying its long-neglected DM service in the last few weeks, by trailing and now beginning to roll out the option for users to receive inbox messages from those they aren't following.

Just last week, Twitter also launched the Event Parrot account, which sends followers notifications about the biggest breaking news events.

If Twitter does launch the new DM feature, it'd likely be around the time of its impending IPO, which will see the social network float on the stock market.

It is also plotting a redesign to its homepage to improve the number of monthly active users, according to the AllThingsD report.

The company has not commented so far, but we'll bring you any word if and when Twitter decides to get deeper into the IM game.

Grand Theft Auto 5 sales reach record breaking 3 million mark in UK

Grand Theft Auto 5 has become the fastest selling game in the UK ever with 3 million copies flying off shelves in just 4 weeks.

Figures taken from GfK Chart-Track are reported to show that having already beaten sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, the title should overtake FIFA 13 sales in the next few days meaning it's also on track to becoming the biggest selling game of all time too.

The smash hit has been dominating the UK gaming charts since its release in September. Despite getting knocked off No.1 by FIFA 14 when it was launched on 27 September, it's reclaimed the top spot after just two weeks after having sold more than 100,000 units in just seven days.

It's not all been plain sailing for GTA 5. The title has faced criticism since its release due to continuing issues with the game.

Rockstar is due to rollout a new update for the software this week in order to address the problems. It will be the fourth update for the game.

The developer is offering a range of in-game monetary compensation packages for players affected by issues including vehicle loss.

“Given some of the recent technical issues during these first days of GTA Online, and now that things are starting to look much smoother (touch wood!), we are planning to provide a special stimulus package for all who have played or will play Grand Theft Auto Online this month,” GTA announced in a recent statement.

“We will be dropping a cool half a million GTA$ in the GTA Online bank accounts of all players this month, starting as early as next week.”

Android 4.3 Samsung Galaxy S4 update begins rollout

An Android 4.3 Samsung Galaxy S4 update has begun a global rollout, with a number of handset owners reporting the new software has been made available for download.

While Samsung has yet to make an official announcement regarding a Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 update, Twitter has today been rife with S4 owners touting their new OS wares. At present it appears that although the software is beginning to drop in patches around the world, German S4 owners are getting the majority of the love.

With none network-tied handsets first to get the operating system update, it has been suggested that the Android 4.3 Samsung Galaxy S4 update offers a number of improvements, with faster handset performance offered by improved RAM management and an improved TouchWiz launcher.

Available as an over-the-air download, the new update will perhaps most importantly bring Samsung Galaxy Gear support to the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Having previously been compatible only with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Samsung Galaxy Gear is the company’s smartwatch companion device and will allow S4 owners to receive call and messaging notifications direct to their wrist.

Network branded Samsung Galaxy S4s are not expected to get the Android 4.3 update for some time yet, with each network to carry out its own testing first.

To download and install the firmware over-the-air, go to Settings > More > About Device > Software update > Update.
