Samsung Galaxy 6 pictures point to 5.5-inch display

Samsung Galaxy S6 leak

New Samsung Galaxy S6 pictures have appeared online ahead of the phone’s expected March unveiling.

With the Galaxy S6 having been the subject of multiple leaks and rumours in recent weeks, newly surfaced images have claimed to show the phone’s metal frame and plastic front.

What’s more, with much speculation surrounding the handset’s sizing, the latest leaks have suggested the device will sport an LG G3 echoing 5.5-inch form factor, not the 5.2-inch dimensions previously tipped.

Surfacing courtesy of claimed supply chain sources, the leaks shots show a slightly chunky handset with a Galaxy Alpha mimicking metal body.

While the images appear to show a new Samsung handset, given the device’s fat bezels and bright yellow hue, we would be hesitant to say this is flagship S6 and not just another mid-range offering. As such, we would suggest taking the leaks with a sizable pinch of salt for now.

Looks aside, previous reports have claimed the Galaxy S6 will be a true iPhone 6 rival, pairing its refreshed design with a bevy of premium components.

Features reportedly on the S6 hit-list include the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 21-megapixel rear-mounted camera.

Although some have speculated the S6 might land at CES 2015 next month, it appears all but certain that the Galaxy S5 follow-on will take its first formal bow during MWC 2015 in early March.

Sony to launch 12.9-inch Xperia Tablet Ultra in early 2015

Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact

The much mooted iPad Pro could have a serious competitor before it’s even landed, with Sony expected to launch the 12-inch Xperia Tablet Ultra in early 2015.

With Apple having widely been rumoured to be working on a 12.9-inch tablet – the iPad Pro – for some time, latest reports have suggested Sony could beat the Cupertino-based giant to the punch.

According to Taiwanese news outlet Digitimes, Sony is prepping a 12-inch, Android powered Xperia Tablet Ultra device for launch in the first half of the coming year.

Although an exact timeframe is still unclear, with CES 2015 just around the corner, it is not unfeasible that Sony could use the Las Vegas-based convention as a platform from which to unveil the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact sibling.

While Digitime’s ‘anonymous’ sources have a questionable record, the rumours echo leaks from earlier this month with tipped an oversized Sony tablet for launch.

According to recent leaks, the Xperia Tablet Ultra will pair its 12.9-inch form factor with a stunningly detailed 3840 x 2400 pixel resolution display.

Further specs tipped to feature with the reportedly 8.6mm thick device include an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera and a 64-bit Qualcomm processor.

Although Sony has yet to formally acknowledge the existence of such a device, the latest reports have suggested the laptop-sized tablet could line up alongside a wallet-busting $1,000 (£650) price tag.

Asus Transformer Book T200TA Laptop Review

What is the Asus Transformer Book T200TA?

The latest tablet-laptop hybrid from Asus is also one of the cheapest examples we’ve seen from this growing corner of the laptop market – and that £350 price is key to the T200TA’s appeal.

It’s the sort of low price that undercuts the cash you’d have to spend to get a proper tablet and a decent laptop, and that makes the T200TA a tempting option – as long as it can avoid common hybrid issues.

SEE ALSO: Best Cheap Tablets Round-up

Asus T200TA 2

Asus Transformer Book T200TA – Design and Build Quality

Asus has been making hybrid machines for longer than almost anyone, and it shows. The T200TA doesn’t look or feel like a £350 device: the tablet portion is coated with smart plastic that’s got a subtle ringed pattern, and the keyboard half is topped with a metallic material that tapers to a narrow edge. That keyboard section has great strength, and the tablet half isn’t much weaker – we’d have no qualms about slinging this machine in a bag without any protection.

The T200TA looks smart and feels strong, but its dimensions are a mixed bag – there clearly hasn’t been much room left in the budget for slimming down.

Each half of the T200TA weighs just over 750g, with a combined weight of 1.54kg. Those figures trade blows with the competition: more than the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 2 11 and the HP Pavilion x360, but lighter than the 2.1kg bulk of the detachable Toshiba Satellite Click 2 L30W. It’s also heavier than its predecessor – the Transformer Book T100 weighed just 1.2kg.

Asus T200TA 5

The T200TA isn’t as slim as it looks. The tapered metallic material on the base sits on top of a thicker, darker section, and it’s not the first time we’ve spotted Asus using this trick to make its laptops look slimmer.

The tablet section is 12mm thick, and the dock is 21mm thick so, combined, the T200TA is 33mm at its chunkiest point. That doesn’t compare well to its rivals, as every other machine we’ve mentioned is less than 25mm thick.

The Asus’ detachable 11.6-inch screen means the T200TA is easier to use as a tablet than most of its rivals – the HP and Lenovo machines don’t detach, and the Toshiba’s tablet half is thick and heavy. That helps this machine prove pretty manageable, but it’s still not a clean bill of health for this hybrid: when its two sections are combined it’s no thinner or lighter than dedicated laptops, and the tablet portion is still larger and heavier than the latest iPad.

The base unit serves up a USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 and a Gigabit Ethernet socket. The tablet offers better connectivity: a Micro HDMI connector, an SD card slot, a Micro USB socket and a headphone jack.

The buttons are all on the back of the tablet, with the Windows key, power button and volume rocker clustered into the top-left corner. Asus has ditched the Windows logo on the front of the tablet section – it was there on the previous generation of Transformer, but it wasn’t an actual Windows button and simply proved confusing.

On the inside there’s Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 4.0 and dual-band 802.11n wireless, but no sign of 802.11ac.

Asus T200TA 10

Asus Transformer Book T200TA – Screen and Sound Quality

The Transformer has a 1366 x 768 touchscreen, which is what we expect on budget machines – but it’s too low for Full HD movies or proper multitasking.

The Asus got off to a good start with a measured brightness of 307 nits. That’s more than enough for indoor viewing, and it’s good enough for outside use, too. It’s brighter than the HP, but Lenovo’s IdeaPad 2 11 was brighter still.

The Lenovo may be brighter, but the Asus machine fought back with better contrast and black levels of 1059:1 and 0.29 respectively. That means colours will appear richer and darker tones will be deeper. It’s aided by good viewing angles, too – barely any brightness is lost when the screen is titled away.

The Asus’s screen is bright and with good contrast, but its colour accuracy isn’t great. The measured temperature of 7015K is cool, the Delta E of 5.36 is around one point behind the Lenovo, and the 62.4% sRGB gamut coverage level falls short.

Those latter figures fall behind the Lenovo, but they’re not as important – this isn’t a machine for serious work, where good accuracy and sRGB figures matter. The Transformer’s superior contrast is the key result here, and it means that the Asus’s screen will feel punchier and richer when browsing the web, watching videos and playing low-end games.

Asus T200TA 3

Asus has fitted surprisingly good speakers to the T200TA. The mid-range is meaty, and the high-end is snappy and well balanced – it’s not tinny, and it doesn’t overwhelm the rest of the audio. Bass drums aren’t too deep and basslines are largely lost, and there’s only enough volume to fill a small room – but the audio kit here is good enough considering this machine’s design and price.

Mercedes

LG has announced itself as a major tech partner for Mercedes-Benz’ forthcoming foray into self-driving cars.

The German auto giant plans a huge keynote announcement at CES 2015, with LG hugely involved thanks to the use of its ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance System) technology.

LG will provide the all-important camera systems which will ensure the cars stay within their lanes and dim the headlights in the face of ongoing traffic.

The firm's cameras will also enable the car to brake autonomously and spot potential dangers like pedestrians and cyclists.

Differing slightly from Google's approach, Mercedes is working on a semi-autonomous solution that will enable drivers to transfer some of the controls to the vehicle.

As such, inside the car, LG will provide Mercedes with biometric systems which monitor eye movement and alertness, in order to protect against drivers falling asleep at the wheel. There’ll also be integration with LG’s home entertainment and mobile technology.

In return for its expertise, LG will the able to license Mercedes-Benz’ 6D Vision technology, in order for LG to bring along endeavours.

The Mercedes-Benz and LG prototype will apparently be on show at CES 2015, an event which promises to bring a ton of news on smarter and self-driving cars.

‘Virtual reality has to be used with caution’ says expert

Oculus Rift

Virtual reality is being billed as the be all and end all of televisual entertainment by many, but some are concerned about the risks behind the immersive tech.

Despite having produced extensive content for VR platforms, Steve Lloyd, Commercial Director at 360-media firm SphereVision has expressed his reservations with the tech.

“Virtual reality has to be used with caution,” Lloyd warned speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews. “It can be a sensory emotional experience.

He continued: “In reality, if you’re watching a video as a tour in an extreme environment, you need to hold on to something as it does take over your senses. It’s easy for someone to fall over.”

Despite the concerns, Lloyd is a proponent of immersive visuals, and talked up SphereVision’s previous work.

Back in August, the company was commissioned to work on a virtual reality simulation that offered point of view narrative of a stroke victim.

“Certainly with the stroke video, it’s better than watching standard linear program video,” explained Lloyd. “360-degree video suits very well the VR experience.”

The video sought to represent the experience of having a stroke, in hopes of educating health professionals about what it’s like to be a patient.

This year has seen a raft of consumer-grade VR devices land, including the Oculus Rift DK2, the Samsung Gear VR, and Google’s do-it-yourself Cardboard headset.

There’s also a growing selection of virtual reality apps on the Google Play store and iTunes, including SphereVision’s own app, which showcases VR-friendly 360-degree video.

Samsung Z1 shows up in leaked snaps, release date in tow

A series of leaked images has leaked online showing off a device purported to be the much-mooted Samsung Z1.

The Z1 is a fast-approaching Samsung blower tipped to run off the firm’s custom-built Tizen OS.

It’s expected to be an entry-level handset, and is landing as the first example of Samsung’s newly refined naming strategy that looks to simplify gadget tags for boggled consumers.

The newly leaked images show off a white handset with the expected physical home button, as well as relatively thick bezels and a plasticky rear that you’d expect from a low-end Samsung smartphone.

The main difference is actually with the central home button, which now takes a squared design as opposed to previously rectangular offerings.

The report, courtesy of HiTech.ru, also claims that the release date will be January 18, with the rollout kicking off in India.

The device will, allegedly, then rollout to China in February, with the device landing on Samsung’s South Korean home soil at some point in the first half of the year.

Pricing is tipped at 100,000 won, which translates to just over £58 sterling – a bargain blower indeed.

As far as specs go, we’re expecting a 4-inch display with an 800 x 480 resolution.

Alongside this, we should see a dual-core 1.2GHz Spreadtrum CPU, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of built-in storage, a microSD slot, and a 1500mAh battery.

It will also have 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and FM radio support, while your Instagram feed is handled by a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 0.3-megapixel front-facing shooter.

It's worth mentioning that it's not yet clear whether this super-saver device will ever make it to UK shores, but we'll keep you posted as we find out more.

iCracked: iPhone 6 already accounting for 15% of screen repairs

Screen replacement service iCracked has revealed that the iPhone 6 is already accounting for 15 per cent of its requested screen repairs.

Despite the iPhone 6 having only been available for a couple of months, it appears that the metal bodied smartphone has been taking repeated trips to the concrete or off the edge of tables since day one.

“The iPhone 6 is already accounting for 15 per cent of our daily requests,” iCracked co-founder and CEO A.J. Forsythe said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews recently.

He added: “We received our first iPhone 6 repair request the day the phone launched and we had iPhone 6 parts available within the first week.”

With iCracked currently servicing over 10,000 smashed smartphones and tablets per month, this sizeable ratio means more than 1,500 iPhone 6 handsets are being repaired through this solitary service each month.

While most of these cracked screens will be the result of clumsy owners, the iPhone 6’s opening days on sale were plagued by fragility concerns.

Subject of the recent ‘bendgate’ saga, the Galaxy S5 and LG G3 rival was found to bend and flex when put under only moderate amounts of pressure.

While 15 per cent might sound a lot, Forsythe is predicting this figure will only rise as the iPhone 6 adoption continues to increase.

According to iCracked’s research, leading smartphone lines have a “25 per cent breakage rate in the first two years.”

What’s more, an estimated 18 per cent of smartphone owners are currently walking the streets with a device that features a cracked or damaged display.

A replacement iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus screen through iCracked will set consumers back the princely sum of £160.

Although iPhone 6 requests are on the rise, Apple’s former smartphones – the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C – still account for more than half of iCracked’s repairs. The company also services a number of Android devices, including the Galaxy Note 3.

Numatic Henry HVR200-A2 Vacuum Cleaners Review

What is the Numatic Henry HVR200-A2?

Numatic’s iconic Henry vacuum cleaners have been around for over 20 years. From cleaning offices to cleaning up after building work, Henry’s smiling face remains the professionals’ vacuum cleaner of choice because they are simply, cheap, effective and reliable.

The HVR200-A2 is the latest generation of base-model Henry, sporting a bijou 580W motor and an official EU A class energy rating. The HiFlo motor and HepaFlo bags promise exceptional suction despite the low power consumption. This A2 model comes with a wide range of tools, long hose and near 10m cable for exceptional cleaning range. All this for less than £100 would seem outstanding value too.

Numatic Henry HVR200-A2 – Accessories

The usefully long 2.3m hose is robust, stretchy and very flexible and attaches to three stainless steel tubes that simply push together. These are a friction fit so there are no clips to break, but avoid pushing too firmly or they will be difficult to part.

The tool pack includes a main floor head with manual drop-down bristles for hard floors, a crevice tool, dusting brush and a combination upholstery tool with slide on compact short bristle dusting brush. For close-to-hand cleaning you can dispense with the steel tubes and use a supplied short plastic connector.

Henry Numatic HVR200-A2 13

The main cleaner is robust ABS plastic with clips for the plug and a single tool stand, and a manual cable winder on top. It rolls freely on two large wheels at the rear and two trolley-type wheels at the front making it highly manoeuvrable.

The unit splits between the coloured plastic bin and black top section, which houses the motor, to reveal a washable cloth filter and access to the bag. Depending on where you buy, between one and four HEPA class bags are supplied.

Numatic Henry HVR200-A2 – How easy is it to use on stairs?

With its long, flexible hose that stretches well and three steel tubes, the Henry cleaned to the top of our domestic stairs, while the main cleaner was still on the ground floor. There is little need to drag it up stair-by-stair, which is just as well as it’s no lightweight at 8.5kg – although it is far from being the heaviest cylinder cleaner we have tested, we can't recommend this cleaner for anyone with a bad back.

The main head swivels well but proved a little too big for stairs with turns that narrow at one side. For this we switched to the upholstery brush, which worked into the corners. Like cleaning on carpeted floors, some effort is required as there is no rotating brush bar to agitate dirt from the carpet. However, as its exceptional reach meant we didn’t have to drag the cleaner half way up stairs and start again, we were happy to put in the elbow grease.

Numatic Henry HVR200-A2 – How does it cope with pet hair?

As with all models that have a static main cleaning head, pet hairs posed a challenge for Henry. Using the main head our 30cm test patch of mixed Labrador and collie hair rubbed into the carpet took around 16 seconds to clean completely.

This was actually not a bad result at all considering the low power motor and lack of turbo brush bar, but it wouldn’t be our first choice of Henry for pet owners – the Henry Xtra HVX1200 comes with Numatic’s Airo Brush head and costs around £50 more. This model far from disgraced itself where cleaning up after our furry friends, though.

Xbox and PlayStation suffer Christmas connection issues

Microsoft’s Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation Network both faced technical issues yesterday, leaving many users unable to log in.

What’s more, the hacker group known as Lizard Squad has claimed responsibility for the connection outage.

If that name rings a bell, it’s because earlier this month the group also said it was behind a different attack on PSN, as well as an attack on XBL the week before.

Lizard Squad were also the purported enactors of an attack on EA around the Destiny game release.

The holiday season does typically see increased usage due to new consoles and games being gifted for Christmas, but it’s predictable and so Microsoft and Sony usually allocate sufficient resources.

For many, the services were inaccessible for most of the day, with a select few demanding compensation from the firms for the outage.

Related: Xbox One vs PlayStation 4

The most obvious way to take down the services would have been through a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack, whereby the firm’s servers would be flooded with packets, overloading them and causing a crash.

Sony posted the following message to Twitter at 20:54 yesterday: “We are still looking into the PSN issues reported earlier. Thanks again for your continued patience today.”

Microsoft, meanwhile, posted a message to its Xbox Live Status support page that read: “Hi Xbox members. Are you having a rough time signing in to Xbox Live? We’re working to get this figured out right away.”

It added: “Keep trying to sign in when you get a chance. We’re grateful for your patience, and we’ll be sure to loop you in on our progress in 30 minutes.”

Interestingly, Kim Dotcom – founder of Mega file-sharing service – offered the group 3000 Mega premium vouchers to call off the attack.

Dotcom tweeted: “Asking Mega management to approve 3000 MegaPrivacy premium vouchers for LizardMafia if they stop attacking Xbox Live and PSN immediately.”

He then tweeted later again, claiming to have resolved all of the issues: “A Christmas Miracle. How MegaPrivacy saved Xbox & PlayStation from the LizardMafia Attack. Enjoy your games!”

HTC to grow entry-level smartphone range in early 2015

by |

Share:

HTC

HTC has revealed it has plans to expand its smartphone line-up with a selection of new entry-level handsets.

Jack Tong, the firm’s President of North Asia, revealed that next year will see more low-spec 4G smartphones hit store shelves.

He noted that this portfolio expansion would take place specifically in the first quarter of 2015.

The Digitimes report did note however, that HTC was expecting its shipments ‘to grow by a double-digit rate in the coming year’.

A focus on online sales was also outed in the report, with HTC pegged as ‘pushing sales through the internet’ to help hit these targets.

Online sales are currently accounting for ‘a double-digit ratio in [HTC’s] total sales’, but pushing entry-level handsets via the internet would help improve this further.

Related: HTC One M9 tipped to retain 5-inch 1080p display

The internet is typically a popular avenue for entry-level handsets, as the lack of overheards compared to brick-and-mortar retail helps keep costs to a minimum.

Premium handsets however, are often worth the investment of physical retail space due to the higher profit margins.

A final fact to be gleaned from the report is that HTC reckons its RE action camera has been quite successful so far.

The device has, reportedly, seen strong sales since launching earlier this month, with sales expected ‘to surpass 20,000 units’ by the end of this year.

Dyson DC41 Animal Mk2 (2015) for £319 -- The next best price we've seen is £329 on John Lewis and most sell it for £349. Carphone Warehouse Boxing Day Sale

The Carphone Warehouse sales has provided disappointing so far but we'll keep an eye on it.

Your smartphone is your friend here – a good price comparison and barcode scanner app will save you a bunch of time and money. It's surprisingly hard to find a good one since Google killed its Google Shopper app, though. We'd recommend ShopSavvy from the ones we tried – it's available on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Idealo and Price Runner are also worth considering, not to mention good old Google search. Avoid RedLaser as it's now owned by eBay and shows only eBay prices, which isn't helpful at all.

If you're on a laptop, or don't mind navigating its non-mobile optimised website, Amazon price tracker CamelCamelCamel is a great way to check exactly how good a deal is. It tracks price changes on products over time, making it easier to see if that 'down from' claim is really accurate or not.

How to switch from Android to iPhone: A simple guide to going Apple

Has Apple's long-awaited embrace of larger displays with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus convinced you to make the switch from Android to iPhone? Here's how to do it with minimal fuss.

Perhaps it's taken iOS 8 and its more open, more powerful features to do the trick. Maybe you're finally in a financial position to splash out on the famously expensive Apple smartphone, or perhaps you just fancy a change of scenery.

Whatever your reason, and however good Android has become in recent years, there's no denying that Apple is at the top of its game right now on both hardware and software fronts.

Of course, the prospect of making the leap across to 'the other side' is always a little daunting. Years of accumulating contacts, photos, music, and apps on one distinct platform is often why many people choose not to switch to the other.

But do you know what? It really isn't difficult to make the switch between these two great platforms - in either direction.

Here we're going to discuss how to make the switch from Android to iPhone.

Importing contacts, calendar, and email

Transferring contacts, calendar entries, and emails to a new smartphone platform could be a bit of a headache in the old days. Not any more.

If you're coming from Android, all three are extremely likely to be synced to your Google account. It's at the heart of the Android experience, and fortunately that makes it easy to pull everything across to your iPhone.

To pull across your contacts, calendar, and Gmail from Android, simply go into Settings, then Mails, Contacts, Calendar, and then select Add Account.

Choose Google from the resulting list and add your account details as requested.

Once done, you can go into the account and opt to sync your Gmail, contacts, calendar entries, and notes to your new Apple smartphone. Simple, eh?

This also works with Yahoo and Outlook - the latter also syncing your reminders - and several other email account services.

Using social networks

Of course, many of us these days do our communicating through social networks, which means that a lot of the contact information we use is stored there - including all those funky profile images.

Fortunately, the iPhone is a very Facebook and Twitter-friendly smartphone. Just install the relevant social network app(s) from the App Store. Then, go into Settings and scroll down until you see the little cluster of social network icons.

Tap Facebook or Twitter, depending on which you want to pull the contact information from. Input your username and password.

Doing this will download all of your Facebook or Twitter friends to the Contacts app in your iPhone. It will also pull in any events to the calendar app, not to mention enabling you to post updates, photos, and the like from within iOS 8.

Using an app

In the event that you have some contacts that aren't synced up to a modern email account or social network - which can be the case with some of those old contacts that you only ever deal with via calls and SMS messages - you can employ a third party app to transfer contacts from your Android phone to your iPhone.

Apple itself recommends Copy My Data from Media Mushroom, which offers a quick and crisp contact transfer process. It has free apps on both the App Store and the Google Play Store, so download both and follow the simple steps to pull your contacts across.

Bringing your photos and videos across

There are a number of ways to bring across your photos from Android to iPhone, but all involve either a third party app or hooking your phones up to your computer.

The first question to ask here is, which photo storage services are you signed up to? With Android, there's a good chance you've got all of your pictures and videos backed up to your Google account.

Even if you haven't, it's probably worth doing so, if you still have your Android phone to hand. Go into Google's Photos app (if it's not already installed, you can find it free on the Google Play Store) and opt to turn Auto-backup on.

Once done, all of the pictures stored on your Android phone will be saved to the cloud.

There's no Google Photos app on the App Store, its functionality has been folded into the Google+ app. Download and sign in using your Google account details, then select the Photo option from the sidebar to view all your old photos.

You might even want to turn on auto-backup on here, as your photos will be stored in the Google cloud should you ever switch back to Android.

In a similar way to Google, many Android users auto-backup their photos to Dropbox, or some other cloud storage solution. The process of retrieving these is a similar case of downloading the relevant app from the App Store and signing in.

The aforementioned Copy My Data app can also be used to transfer pictures from Android to iPhone.

Using iTunes to transfer photos

If you don't want to use cloud-based solutions, or just want to transfer a large number of photos without using the internet, you can do things the old fashioned way through iTunes on your computer.

First up, if you have a Mac, you'll need to download and install the Android File Transfer app. If you have a Windows PC, you don't need to install anything.

Next, assuming iTunes is installed on your computer (of course it is), connect your Android phone to your computer using a USB cable. Your computer should automatically open up your phone's file system. Locate the photos and videos here - they're probably in DCIM>Camera.

Drag and drop the photos you want to transfer onto your computer. Anywhere will do - just make it easy to find.

Now unplug your Android phone and plug in your new iPhone in the same way. Open iTunes and select your iPhone. Click Photos, then select the Sync Photos checkbox and navigate to the location where your Android photos are stored on your computer.

You might want to select Include Videos if there are any videos in here.

Now click Apply, and your Android photos will sync to your iPhone.

Transfering your music to iTunes

Again, the question to ask from the outset is, how did you listen to music on your Android phone?

If you used streaming services like Spotify, Deezer, or Google Play Music, continuing the experience on your iPhone is as simple as downloading the equivalent app from the App Store and signing in.

If you have a library of physical MP3 files on your Android phone that you want to bring across, things aren't quite so simple - but that's not to say that they're difficult either.

The method is pretty much the same as the aforementioned iTunes picture transfer technique. If you're on a Mac, you'll need to download that Android File Transfer app. Otherwise, you're good to go.

Simply plug your Android phone into your computer using a USB cable, and your phone's file system should appear as if it were an external hard drive or an SD card. Navigate to the Music folder and drag and drop all of the music files you want from here to a new folder on your computer. Again, make it easy to find!

Now open iTunes on your computer, go into your Library and select Music. Open the file you stored your Android music tracks in and drag them onto the Music view in iTunes.

Now select iPhone, followed by Music, and sync either the entire library or pick out the tracks you've just added. Hit sync.

Go into the Music app on your iPhone and you'll see all of your old tracks there.

What about apps?

If you're worried about losing any of the apps that you enjoyed using on your Android phone, don't. Apple's App Store is the biggest of its kind there is.

The Google Play Store actually has more apps, but a higher proportion of those are worthless rubbish. If you're talking about the apps that people actually use - and WANT to use - the iPhone is where it's at.

You'll find all of the apps that you used on your Android on iPhone, and plenty more that weren't. In the rare cases where the exact app isn't available, you can bet that there'll be a range of alternatives, many of which will probably be better.

Indeed, the standard of apps on iPhone is generally - though certainly not always - better than on Android.

Part of this is thanks to the longstanding popularity of the App Store. The Android equivalent, meanwhile, got off to a rocky start, and has only really been able to make up serious ground in recent years.

Another reason iPhone apps are generally better is that there are far fewer iPhone models around. This means that developers can concentrate on getting their apps running well rather than spreading their resources thin on a large range of Android phones.

Finally, Apple polices its App Store far more stringently than Google does its Play Store, meaning that developers have to work harder to get their apps approved. This inevitably leads to a higher standard of apps.

What this all ultimately means is that we don't need to publish a list of popular Android apps that are also available on iPhone. If you used and liked an app on your Android phone, you'll be able to get the same experience or better on iPhone.

How to switch from iPhone to Android: A simple guide to going Google

Making the jump from iPhone to Android a little easier

Has the latest batch of Android phones convinced you to put down your iPhone?

Maybe you’re readying yourself for the overwhelming size and premium specs of the Nexus 6. Or perhaps the OnePlus One’s impossibly good value has been too difficult to resist.

Has Samsung’s welcome shift in focus to premium design with the Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4 turned your head? Or is the prospect of Android 5.0 Lollipop prompting you to make the shift?

Whatever the reason, you’re likely to find plenty to like over on ‘the other side.’

Many long term iPhone owners will be anxious over making the switch, but they needn’t be. You’d be surprised how easy it is to get all of your photos, music, contacts, and apps over to Android.

Set up a Google account

The very first thing you should do with your Android phone is set up your Google account.

If you don’t have a Google account and you’re switching to Android, well, you really need to get one. This is a Google-driven phone, and if you don’t have a Google account you’re stopping a lot of the best stuff that Android has to offer, and there isn’t really much point in owning your new phone.

The Google Play Store needs a Google account for you to download and install apps. All of the preinstalled Google apps like Google Maps and Gmail need a Google account, too.

account

Also, by signing up for a Google account you’ll make the process of bringing all your contacts, photos, and videos across infinitely easier.

It’s easy to set up a Google account. You’ll be offered the chance during the set-up procedure, but even if you skipped this phase, just go into your phone’s settings menu (look for the little cog icon in the notification menu), go to the Accounts section, and opt to add a Google account. Follow the instructions, and you’re away.

Once set-up, any Google app you have installed, or that you install from the Google Play Store, will be able to tap into this account without fuss. That’s just how things roll in Googletown.

Importing contacts

Different Android devices have different ways of transferring contacts, so we’ll start with the universally applicable - if somewhat long-winded - way of adding your Apple iCloud contacts to your Google account.

This is none the less a good way of ensuring your Google account, which is at the source of the Android experience in many ways, has all of the right information from the outset.

Still, there should be a quicker and simpler way to transfer your contacts via Bluetooth, and we’ll run through that at the end.

Importing contacts the sure-fire Google way

If you’ve been using Google and Gmail for your contacts on your iPhone, then you’ll have brought your contacts across when you logged into your Google account at the outset. Easy peasy!

Of course, many people coming from an iPhone won’t have this luxury. There’s a good chance you have these contacts stored in Apple’s own iCloud. So how do you bring these contacts across?

We hope you still have your iPhone to hand. If so, go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>iCloud and ensure the toggle for Contacts is flipped to the on position.

If you have to flip it on, you’ll be asked if you want to merge your device’s contacts with iCloud - say yes.

Now, go to iCloud.com on a desktop web browser and log in with your Apple ID. Select Contacts, then click on the little cog in the bottom left hand corner. Now choose Select All. Click on the cog again and select Export vCard.

iCloud

Stay in your desktop browser, but head to Gmail.com and log in using your Google account. Click on Gmail in the top left hand corner and select Contacts. If you haven’t been using Gmail, this will probably be a little sparse right now. Let’s fill it up.

Click on More just above those contacts, followed by Import. Select Choose File and navigate to that saved vCard file you just exported from iCloud.

Select that and all of your iCloud contacts will be added to your Google account - and hence your new Android phone.

If, like many people, this process brings together contacts from both accounts, there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself with a number of duplicate entries.

To help deal with that, click on More in Gmail again and select Find & merge duplicates.

Importing contacts the easy Bluetooth way

Of course, there’s probably a much quicker and easier way to do this. Go into your Android phone’s Contacts app, and you should find an option to import contacts.

Check this and there could well be a Bluetooth option. Select this and ensure that Bluetooth on your iPhone is turned on, then select your newly visible iPhone from your Android phone. You should find all of your iPhone’s contacts being pulled in, nice and easy.

Bringing your photos and videos across

There are loads of ways to bring your photos and videos across from your iPhone to your Android phone, but the best way is to make use of the cloud.

You can use Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, or any other cloud storage service for that matter, but perhaps the easiest for most new Android users will be Google’s own Google Photos service. Here’s another instance where signing up for that Google account at the outset reveals itself to be a good idea.

Google Photos comes with every Android phone these days, and offers 15GB of online storage for free. What’s more, only photos above 2048x2048 will count against this allowance.

The easiest way to get your iPhone photos onto your Android phone whilst integrating with the Android ecosystem is to download the Google app onto your iPhone. Sign into this app using your Google account details.

Next, select the menu icon from the top left hand corner of the app, followed by the little cog icon. Now select Camera and Photos and ensure Auto-Backup is switched on.

Google

All the photos and videos stored on your iPhone will be uploaded to Google’s cloud storage solution.

Now, go into the Photos app on your Android phone and, once signed in, you’ll find all of your iPhone photos and videos, there to share, edit, and download as you will.

Transfer your iTunes music

Though music subscription services are all the rage now, most former iPhone users will have amassed a large number of MP3 music tracks through iTunes. This can be a big reason for sticking with Apple.

You might be surprised to learn how easy it is to bring those tracks with you to Android. In fact, with Google Play Music, you can send those tracks to the cloud so you’ll have access to them from virtually any connected device. This won’t cost you a penny either.

Make sure that all of your music is synced to iTunes on your computer. Now, install the Google Play Music Manager on your computer, run it, and follow the instructions to upload up to 20,000 of your music tracks to Google’s servers.

Note that you’ll need to set up a Google Wallet account, which involves putting the details for a cash or credit card in, even though you won’t be paying for anything.

Once your music is uploaded, you’ll be able to find it through the Play Music app on your new Android phone. From here you can either stream it or download it to your phone.

NOTE: Direct media uploading

With all of these media types - photos, music, and videos - you can just as easily upload them onto your Android phone with a USB cable.

Simply plug your phone into your computer’s USB port using such a cable (which should have come bundled with your phone), and you’ll be able to drag and drop files onto it as if its were an external hard drive or a simple USB drive.

With Windows, you can just plug in and go - just choose Media device (MTP) on the Android phone if prompted. On Mac, it works the same, but you’ll need to download and install the Android File Transfer application before hand.

android

That done, your files should appear in the appropriate media apps on your Android phone.

This method is a little old fashioned, and it’s a little clunky, but if you want to transfer large numbers of media files simultaneously, and to store them locally on your phone, it’s still a good method to use.

If your Android phone comes with a microSD slot, you can transfer files the same way, but you’ll need to buy an SD adaptor first.

Apps

It used to be that the big disparity between Android and iOS was apps. Just a few short years ago, Google’s app store was a virtual wasteland compared to Apple’s, which had all the best and latest apps.

If you have any lingering worries over this, put them out of your head. Android has pretty much all of the major apps that you could want, and a fair few of the cool and quirky little ones too.

Here are some of the top apps that you may have been used to using on your iPhone, and links to the Android versions.

If games are more your thing, then rest assured that the Google Play Store is very well stacked indeed for games. No, it’s not quite up there on a par with iOS in terms of range or quality just yet, but it’s not too far behind, and there are already far more top notch games available than you’ll have time to play.

Here are just a few examples of blockbuster iOS games that are also available for Android:

Monument Valley

XCOM: Enemy Within

Retry

The Room 2

The Interview set for digital release on YouTube and Google Play

Interview

The Interview

Sony has reportedly reached a ‘tentative agreement’ to make The Interview available to rent through Google’s YouTube and Play Store platforms.

Multiple reports on Thursday claim the firm plans to offer the movie digitally on Christmas Day, so coincide with the release at 300 independent cinemas across the United States.

The firm is also planning to offer the film through its own portals and other digital platforms beyond Google's, reports have claimed.

According to CNN Money the Google deal is yet to be finalised, with sources claiming “the deal could still fall apart.

If completed, the accord will allow curious moviegoers to enjoy The Interview from the comfort of their own living rooms over the Christmas period.

These latest reports come hours after we reported Sony had failed in a bid to stare iTunes as a partner , but a later arrival on Apple’s platform is still possible at a later date according to CNN.

What was (and still is) a nightmare scenario for Sony following the hacking crisis, is now set to turn into a huge money spinner for the under-fire firm.

Sony had initially pulled the movies release indefinitely after the major US cinema chains pulled it from schedules citing threats of violence from the hacking groups upset with the movie’s controversial, international incident-sparking, content.

Given The Interview’s status as the most talked about film of the year, it’s likely to see a flood of downloads from moviegoers more concerned with ‘standing up for freedom’ than the critical panning the movie has received so far.

Talk about turning lemons into lemonade with the greatest unintentional or was it?) PR campaign of all time.

We'll let you know if and when this deal with Google is confirmed.

Samsung pulls down the shutters on London ‘Experience’ store

Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung has closed down its flagship store at the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford, London.

The Samsung Experience location - one of ten around the UK - is now permanently closed with stock removed from the store.

The retail outlet, which was run alongside a partnership with Carphone Warehouse, may have fallen victim to a little festive belt tightening at the Korean company.

Sales of the firm’s Galaxy smartphones and tablets continue to slump, while the company has ceased laptop sales in Europe, so the retail location may have been expendable.

The company told The Verge it is planning to keep the other nine stores open, but didn’t offer a reason for shuttering the location at one of Europe’s biggest shopping centres.

"We remain fully committed to the operation of the remaining nine Samsung Experience Stores across the UK, and wish to reassure our customers that those stores will not be affected by this decision,” a statement read.

Even so, Samsung’s bid rival the Apple Stores as a luxury try-before-you-by shopping haven seems to be faltering somewhat.

If you’re in London and looking for that ‘Samsung Experience’ to do some last minute festive shopping, then braving Oxford Street is your best bet. Or you could just leave it…

PlayStation Now

Sony and Samsung have announced a partnership which will see the PlayStation Now game streaming service arrive on Samsung’s Smart TVs next year.

Sony says (via Engadget) over 200 PlayStation 3 games will be able to stream via the service without the need for a games consoles or downloads, from the second half of 2015.

The app, which is the first for a non-Sony device, will be available through the Samsung Smart Hub on select televisions and can be paired with a DualShock 4 controller.

The games will be available in full and will include the ability to notch up trophies and achievements, online multi-player and cloud game saves.

The service will be previewed on Smart TVs at the Samsung booth during the CES 2015 expo next month, with attendees able to take the service for a spin.

"Since we first introduced PlayStation Now at CES 2014, our vision has been to open the world of PlayStation to the masses by offering the service on the devices they use every day," Masayasu Ito, Executive Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc said in a press release on Thursday.

"Partnering with Samsung is a key step toward realizing this vision, as we can reach a broader audience of consumers who may not own a PlayStation console to show them why gaming with PlayStation is such a unique and amazing experience."

Sony’s deal with Samsung opens the window for manufacturers to jump on board with the platform. Sony had hoped the PlayStation Now platform would serve as an incentive for users to stick with its hardware, but now it seems to have broadened its horizons somewhat.

Brits are still waiting for PlayStation Now, with a beta launch expected in 2015. Hopefully we'll get more news on that from Sony at CES too.

Apple reportedly refused to ‘fast track’ The Interview onto iTunes

The Interview

In another twist to a story that grows stranger by the day, Sony reportedly enlisted help from the White House in a failed bid to get the interview released on iTunes.

The New York Times (via The Verge) says Sony called in the Obama administration to line up a “single technology partner” to get the film released on demand.

According to the report, Apple wasn’t interested “at least on a speedy time scale,” the NYT’s sources claim.

Sony is still expected to announce a digital release for The Interview on Wednesday, but the portal remains unclear.

The firm has apparently ruled out releasing it on Crackle (which was rumoured earlier this week) and YouTube because it must exhaust all for-profit options before dumping its investments for free.

Whether the under-fire entertainment giant is able to find a willing streaming partner to join the independent cinemas showing The Interview, remains to be seen.

Any streaming portal or TV on demand provider would instantly make themselves a target for the hackers and if none step forward, Sony could choose to make it available on demand through its smart TVs or PlayStation consoles too.

However, given The Interview’s status as the most talked about movie in the world, and Americans’ desire to ‘stick it to the terrorists’ by tuning in, there’s likely to be a significant pot of cash on the table for any provider willing to take a chance.
