New Google Nexus 10 rumoured for CES 2014 unveiling

A new Google Nexus 10 tablet could be on the horizon, with latest reports suggesting the flagship Android device will be formally unveiled during CES 2014.

With the Vegas-based tech convention set to kick off next Monday, January 6, new reports have claimed that a revised Google Nexus 10 offering will be produced in partnership with Samsung and showcased during the Korean manufacturer’s conference.

While we must stress that these reports are far from official and should be taken with a considerable pinch of salt, serial tech tipster DigiTimes has cited unnamed industry sources in making the claims.

Google is expected to launch the new Nexus 10 tablet at the show with Samsung remaining the manufacturer of the device,” the Asian outlet reported. The claims added: “Many market watchers expect the device to adopt an AMOLED panel.”

Although the latest reports have offered no indication of the upcoming tablet’s specs, previous leaks have tipped the second-generation iPad Air rival to land running the latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS alongside 2GB of RAM, a 2560 x 1600 pixel Full HD display and a reported 13 hour battery life.

Stay tuned to TrustedReviews for all the latest CES 2014 news and hands-on reviews live from the show floor.

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 release teased by manufacturer on Twitter

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 Tease

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 Tease

Samsung has hinted at the upcoming arrival of new wearable devices, with a Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 release teased on Twitter.

Despite the Samsung Galaxy Gear having only launched at IFA 2013 back in September, the high-profile smartwatch has failed to grab much consumer attention, with the premium wrist wear putting many off with its £300 price tag and limited capabilities.

Teasing the upcoming arrival of new wearable devices, Samsung has posted an image on its social channels pointing to the imminent arrival of a Samsung Galaxy Gear follow-on.

Showing an image of the Samsung Galaxy Gear above ‘2013’ labelling, the teasing message features a large empty space alongside the slogan “what’s next. 2014.”

Although the image does not offer any more precise launch details for its future wearables, it has previously been suggested that the company will unveil new techy timepieces in the coming weeks.

While a Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 offering is not expected to be unveiled until MWC 2014 in February alongside the eagerly awaited Samsung Galaxy S5, a number of leaks have claimed that a Samsung-branded wearable fitness gadget will enter the realms of reality during CES 2014 next week.

In teasing its future tech offerings, Samsung Mobile UK has used the Twitter notification to see what consumers are after. The image was posted alongside the message: “What do you want Samsung to unveil in 2014?”

Although the Samsung Galaxy Gear plays host to incorporated camera and a microphone and speaker combination that makes wrist-based calls a possibility, the watch’s smartphone syncing alerts users to incoming emails but does not let them view the messages.

iPad Pro to launch hybrid 12-inch iPad Pro in autumn?

Apple could launch a hybrid 12-inch iPad Pro in autumn 2014, according to analyst predictions.

Evercore Partners analyst Patrick Wang has released a note to investors outlining his predictions for 2014 and suggests Apple will launch a 12.2-inch hybrid iPad.

Currently known as the iPad Pro, Wang predicts that this larger 12.2-inch display Apple slate could change the PC landscape.

As a 12.2-inch iPad would be more akin to the 11.6-inch MacBook Air, Wang predicts that Apple will use the larger screen size as a new hybrid notebook/tablet for business users.

Built with a next-generation Apple A8 processor inside, the iPad Pro could launch in autumn 2014 running both iOS and Mac OS X operating systems.

Wang highlighted his beliefs that the 64-bit infrastructure of the new Apple A7 processor is a “game changer” and will make way for the new iPad Pro.

A fair few rumours of late suggest that Apple has already been experimenting with a 12-inch screen for a new product that may well launch this year.

The new naming tradition set by the iPad Air, following in the footsteps of the MacBook Air, could suggest that the Cupertino company is gearing up to launch a Pro iPad model, like the MacBook Pro.

Microsoft has been trying to dominate the hybrid PC/tablet market, but has had little success with its Windows 8 devices in this sector.

Xbox One price cut to be introduced ‘faster than forecast’

An Xbox One price cut will be introduced ‘faster than forecast’ as Microsoft looks to compete with the rival PS4, industry analysts have predicted.

Although no Xbox One price cut is expected in the immediate future, it has been suggested that the Redmond-based manufacturer will be forced into reducing the price of its next-gen console sooner than planned in order not to lost ground in the gaming wars.

"It is possible that Microsoft will reduce Xbox One pricing far faster than we have forecasted,” industry analyst Michael Pachter of investment firm Wedbush Morgan said in a note to clients.

Stating that a price cut could help gain traction in the hotly contested console market, Pachter stated: "We think 'winning' is important to both companies.”

He added: “Should hardware prices come down faster than we have modelled, it is likely that hardware and software sales will grow faster."

While Pachter has failed to offer any detail on when this ‘faster than forecast’ price cut might be, he has suggested that by 2016 he believes the Xbox One will be $150 (£91) cheaper by 2016. By this time he also expects the PS4 to be $100 (£61).

Both the Xbox One and PS4 launched in the UK in November. While the PS4 price tag was set at a reasonably accessible £349, the Xbox One price is a full £80 more expensive at £429.

Although Pachter is a well-known industry analyst, his predictions haven’t always been on point. As such we recommend his claims of an Xbox One price cut be taken with a liberal pinch of salt.

BenQ W1400 Projector Review

What is the BenQ W1400?

The W1400 is a single-chip DLP projector that sits towards the top of BenQ’s latest home entertainment projection range. It’s full HD, supports 3D and is at the time of writing available for just a smidge over £1100, making it eye-catching affordable for its level of specification.

BenQ W1400

BenQ W1400: Design and Features

The W1400 is a touch more ‘functional’ in its design than some of BenQ’s other home entertainment projectors. Its shape is a fairly perfunctory rectangle, and while its combination of a gloss white top panel with a deep grey sides and front is reasonably striking, the rather random positioning of the lens just to the right of centre and the large fan grille that dominates the W1400’s left front side both cost it style points.

Connectivity is as we’d expect of a home entertainment projector, which is to say there are two HDMIs, a component video input, a composite video input, an S-Video input, a D-Sub PC port, and both RS-232 and 12V Trigger outputs for system integration.

The W1400’s quoted image specifications are promising. As well as a native 1080p resolution it claims a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and a high brightness level of 2,200 Lumens.

We should point out that this brightness figure refers to a measurement taken using a full white signal rather than the ‘colour light output’ measurement approach some rival projector manufacturers – most notably Epson - are keen to promote in a bid to expose the brightness reducing side effect of the DLP colour wheel. But as ever, our judgments on the W1400 will be based purely on what we see on our screen rather than any mere numbers games.

The DLP chipset at the W1400’s heart is a DarkChip 3 system, which is widely respected for the way it minimises the ‘gaps’ between the tiny mirror devices it uses to deliver pictures. There's a 6x RGBRGB colour wheel, and the optics are calibrated to target the Rec. 709 Colour Gamut widely used by the professional video industry.

More home cinema credentials come from its ISF Certification, meaning that it has enough picture calibration tools to be professionally calibrated to precisely suit the demands of your particular viewing room.

BenQ W1400

Among the calibration features available are colour management, a simple but effective multi-level flesh tone adjustment, a series of gamma presets (including the key 2.2 one), a Clarity Control system that provides an unusual amount of fine tuning of noise reduction and detail enhancement tools, and a system for fine tuning the colour temperature.

There’s also Texas Instruments’ Brilliant Colour option for boosting saturations, and a return for BenQ’s previously impressive SmartEco system for automatically adjusting the projector’s light output in response to the brightness level of the content being shown.

The most controversial feature of the W1400 is the addition of a Frame Interpolation engine to the spec of the recently reviewed BenQ W1300. As you would expect, this is designed to remove judder from images by using processing to add extra frames of picture data, but the concern is that in doing this the projector will leave pictures looking unnaturally fluid and over-processed.

Wrapping the W1400’s specifications up are a built-in 2x10W sound system for when you just can’t partner your pictures with an external speaker array, and 3D playback. This is of the active variety, and it’s good to find a pair of the necessary 3D glasses included for free.

BenQ W1400: Set Up

BenQ W1400 The W1400 is unusual for its price point in offering vertical image shifting (via a wheel under a panel above the lens) to help you get pictures in the right position on your screen. The extent of this image shifting is pretty limited, but anything is better than nothing on a £1,100 projector.

Also good to find is a 1.6x optical zoom, which joins with the vertical image shift and a fairly short-throw lens in making the W1400 unusually adaptable to different room environments.

If the image shifting system doesn’t quite go far enough you can use screw down legs under all of the projector’s corners in conjunction with a keystone correction system to get your image fitting flush in your screen. However, as always we’d suggest you avoid keystone correction where possible, as it’s essentially a digital manipulation of the source image that spoils the ‘pixel for pixel’ purity we like to get when watching HD sources on full HD displays.

The menus on the W1400 are clear and reasonably logical, and the remote control is backlit and decently laid out.

Focussing next on picture set up tools, our suggestions would be as follows. First, use the Eco lamp setting while watching films in a dark room, as we found this to deliver a better black level performance than the SmartEco mode while also delivering a marked reduction in the projector’s running noise.

Second, set the noise reduction and detail enhancer elements to zero while watching HD. Third, only use the Frame Interpolation on its low setting or don’t use it at all unless you’re really noticing judder in a particular source. And finally, while the BrilliantColour setting does give images more punch and can be especially helpful if you’ve got some ambient light in your room, it can push colours into marginally unnatural territory, and also tends to exaggerate source noise.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 specs leak

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1

Specs for the heavily rumoured Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 tablet have leaked online ahead of an expected CES 2014 reveal.

Just a few days after the device passed through the FCC, AnTuTu benchmarks have revealed the specs for the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1.

According to the benchmarks, the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 will have a stunning 10.1-inch 2560 x 1600p Full HD matching the Google Nexus 10 display.

It will also have a 1.9GHz Samsung Exynos 5420 octa-core processor with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

The benchmarks also suggest that the tablet will have an 8-megapixel rear camera and run Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

Of course, the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1’s name is justified by such high-end specs. They are vastly different from the specs sheet offered by the current Galaxy Tab series, which tend to be fairly middling.

This will no doubt mean the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 will have a much higher price tag than the other Galaxy Tab slates.

This 10.1 Galaxy Pro is expected to be released sometime in February, so could well be unveiled at CES 2014 next week alongside three other tablets.

The Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1, Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, Galaxy Tab 3 Lite and Note Pro 12.2 are all expected to launch at events across CES and MWC in Q1 2014.

All four devices just passed through Bluetooth certification, having been clocked at the FCC earlier this week.

This suggests the four new tablets are very close to launch, especially with launch dates expected in the next few weeks.

Microsoft considered 'disc-less' Xbox One until last year

The future of gaming is undoubtedly digital, and now Microsoft has confirmed that it almost launched the Xbox One without an optical disc drive.

Despite the early Xbox One details having been announced earlier in the year, Microsoft has revealed that it considered dropping the console’s physical, disc-based gaming abilities as late as mid-2013, just months ahead of the console’s eventual global release.

Speaking with the Official Xbox Magazine, Phil Spencer, Head of Microsoft Studios stated that a “purely disc-less console” had been strongly pushed for the Xbox One platform.

"Obviously, after the announcement and E3, there was some feedback about what people wanted to change," Spencer said of the console. "There was a real discussion about whether we should have an optical disc drive in Xbox One or if we could get away with a purely disc-less console.”

According to the Microsoft Studio head, the final decision to incorporate an optical drive within the Xbox One ultimately rested on unpredictable global internet speeds which could have left some gamers unable to access certain games or elements of games.

He stated: “When you start looking at bandwidth and game size, it does create issues. We decided - which I think was the right decision - to go with the Blu-ray drive and give the people an easy way to install a lot of content.

“From some of those original thoughts, you saw a lot of us really focusing on the digital ecosystem you see on other devices - thinking of and building around that."

Despite the Xbox One having finally been bestowed with an integrated optical drive, Microsoft’s next-gen efforts have played second fiddle to the rival PS4 since launch.

According to sales figures published yesterday, the PS4 outsold the Xbox One in the UK during the lucrative Christmas launch window.

Acer Iconia W4 Windows 8.1 tablet launched

Acer has announced all the tablets it will be showcasing at CES 2014, with the Acer Iconia W4 taking top spot.

The Iconia W4 is an 8.1-inch slate running Windows 8.1 on a 4th generation Intel Atom processor.

Two other Acer tablets will get some of the spotlight at CES as well, the new models of the Android Acer Iconia A1-830 and Acer Iconia B1-720 tablets.

Acer Iconia W4 Features

The Acer Iconia W4 is the latest edition of the company’s Windows tablet, running Windows 8.1 on a 8.1-inch 1280 x 800p HD resolution LCD IPS screen in a 16:10 ratio.

Running on a 4th generation 1.8GHz Intel Atom processor, the Iconia W4 comes with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, all expandable via the in-built microSD card slot.

The Iconia W4 comes with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 Edition as standard, and you can opt to buy the keyboard accessory to accompany the W4 as well.

There’s also a micro HDMI port and the tablet only weighs 415g, so is fairly lightweight. The Iconia W4 also has a 2-megapixel front camera and 5-megapixel rear camera with autofocus.

The Iconia W4 will be available to buy from the end of this month with a starting price of €299 (approx. £250).

Acer Iconia A1-830 Features

The newest Acer Iconia A1 model, the A1-830, is a 7.9-inch Android tablet powered by an 1.6GHz Intel Atom Clover Trail Z2560 processor with 1GB of RAM.

The A1-830 has a 7.9-inch 1024 x 768p HD IPS display with a slim bezel enclosed within a body that is just 8.15mm thick.

The Clover Trail processor makes the A1-830 a little more energy efficient, for a battery life of up to 7.5-hours.

It runs the rather outdated Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean OS and has microSD-expandable 16GB of internal storage.

The Acer Iconia A1-830 will be available sometime Q1 2014 for a price of €169 (approx. £140).

Acer Iconia B1-720 Features

Acer has announced the third-generation of the 7-inch Iconia B1 Android tablet, which comes with a 1.3GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM.

The cheapest of the three tablets, the B1-720 has a 7-inch screen for which Acer has yet to disclose the resolution, which is rather worrying. It does have 10-point touch recognition though.

The B1-720 is available in Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi and 3G models, and features a microSD card for expandable storage options.

The Wi-Fi 16GB Iconia B1-720 model is priced from €129 (approx. £105) and will be available from mid-January. The 3G version comes with 16GB of internal storage and will be available at the end of January from €179 (approx. £150).

Garmin VIRB Elite Sat Nav Review

What is the Garmin VIRB Elite?

The VIRB Elite is Garmin's first foray into the action camera market. Where Mio released a camera aimed at a market related to its sat-nav range in the shape of the Mio MiVue, Garmin is targeting those who might already be owners of its outdoor- and sports-oriented products. The VIRB is rugged and waterproof to IPX7, and comes bundled with a selection of mounts for attaching to your helmet and other equipment.

The VIRB is not a me-too product, or a vain attempt to diversify out of the difficult sat-nav market. Although the VIRB does jump on an increasingly popular action camera bandwagon, Garmin has called upon pretty much every existing area of the expertise it has in other areas to make this a unique take on the concept. Full HD shooting, a rugged build, and Wi-Fi are just the beginning.

Garmin VIRB Elite

Garmin VIRB Elite: Features

The first unusual feature is the 1.4-inch Chroma display. Only a few action cameras offer a screen, most notably the JVC ADIXXION GC-XA2 and GoPro HERO3 via its optional backpack. However, a screen always comes at the expense of battery life, and Garmin has chosen a novel way round this problem. The screen is not backlit, so it consumes far less power than a regular LCD.

The main downside is that it is impossible to see in the dark, and not exactly rich in colour. But bright sunlight is actually beneficial, although viewing angles are still relatively poor. The resolution is also just 205 x 148, which is really only enough to ensure your framing is approximately correct and the camera is pointing in the right direction. But it's better to have than not, as it also lets you configure menu settings.

The VIRB's core specification is pretty reasonable for an action camera, too. The sensor is a relatively sizeable 1/2.3-inch CMOS with 16Mpixels, which allows the camcorder to capture video at up to 1080p and 30 frames per second. There are also 1,280 x 960 and x 720 recording options, with the former available at 48 frames per second and both at 30 or 60 frames per second.

Garmin VIRB Elite

It's also possible to record WVGA at up 120 frames per second, and stills at up to 16Mpixels. There are burst modes of up to ten pictures per second at 8Mpixels, or six per second at 16Mpixels. A microSD slot is buried beneath the removable battery, and at the top 21Mbits per second video data rate an 8GB module will be enough for 50 minutes of footage.

With Full HD only requiring 2.07Mpixels of resolution, Garmin could have provided an advanced zoom without losing any detail. This isn't available, but you do get digital image stabilisation, which is an advantage over many camcorders in this class. There is also digital lens distortion correction built-in, to counteract the effect of the wide-angle.

The bundle includes two mounts, although both are fairly similar. Both are adhesive, with one providing a flat surface and the other concave, so it will adhere more securely to a helmet. Two sets of fixings are included, too, so you can easily transfer the camera between them. It also clips in and out of its cradle very easily. There is a truly massive range of optional mounts, too, including vests, dashboard mounts, numerous straps, and even a waterproof dive case that is a relatively reasonable £34.99.

Intel to showcase “innovative wearables” at CES

Intel has teased that it will launch a selection of “innovative wearables” at CES 2014.

According to Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, the company will be making a move into the wearable technology sector next week.

“Wearables is wide open. What you will see at CES is that we are actually going to bring some very innovative wearables to the show that are developed and manufactured here,” said Krzanich.

Although the Intel CEO failed to offer any more information apart from this tantalising titbit, he has got some huge goals to aim for with Intel.

Speaking to Re/code, Krzanich said his main aim is to move Intel into the mobile world, as other companies have already moved into manufacturing mobile chips.

Intel once dominated the now slow-growth PC market and Krzanich is looking to make up some of that lost time at CES 2014.

Along with those “innovative wearables”, Intel will also announce the latest in the Quark chip line it originally launched in early 2013.

Intel aims to introduce these new Quark chips into new devices like wearables and other machines.

“Our view is that Quark can make almost anything smart. We’ll show you some things that you would never have thought could become smart and communicate.”

Krzanich has also set Intel a rather ambitious goal of powering 40 million tablets sold in 2014. Some of this plan will be announced at CES.

“What you will see at CES [are] tablets that are doing some things that you didn’t think possible. We’ll bring some new innovations in imaging, for example. That’s about all I can tell you for now.”

Intel does realise that the smartphone market will be tough to crack, especially as companies like Qualcomm have already made alliances with the major smartphone manufacturers.

“The phone space is tough because it is consolidated. If you really want to make inroads in [smartphones], you need to win one of the two big guys [Samsung and Apple].”

HTC M8 specs leak again

Specifications for the HTC M8 have once again been leaked onto the internet, giving us a firmer idea of what to expect from the HTC One follow-up.

Back in November we got our first major taste of HTC M8 spec goodness thanks to the appearance of some AnTuTu benchmark results. This followed leaked snaps apparently detailing the forthcoming flagship phone.

Now, ultra-reliable internet tipster @evleaks has weighed in on the subject of HTC’s next big hitter.

In a typically to-the-point Tweet (which is the whole point of Twitter, after all), we learn: "Preliminary HTC M8 specs: Snapdragon MSM8974, 5" 1080p display, 2GB RAM, UltraPixel rear / 2.1MP front cams, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, KK, Sense 6.0."

That would mean a larger display than the HTC One’s 4.7-inch example, as well as an improved processor. While the HTC One runs on a Snapdragon 600, the chip mentioned here belongs to the Snapdragon 800 family.

We’ll have to wait to see if that UltraPixel camera has boosted the megapixel count at all following the HTC One’s somewhat underwhelming (but impressively bright) 4-megapixel unit.

It’s good to see Android 4.4 KitKat on board too, and we’re hopeful that in the Sense 6.0 UI HTC will continue the considerable improvements we saw in the HTC One and Sense 5.0.

There’s nothing new in these leaked specs, then, but the fact that it comes from such a reliable source leaves us confident that this is what we’ll be seeing over the coming months. Expect to see the HTC M8 take a bow some time in early 2014 - possibly at MWC 2014 in February.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 now comes with faster processor

Microsoft has quietly upgraded the processor in the Microsoft Surface Pro 2, just two months after it first hit shops.

The second Windows 8 tablet to emerge from Microsoft HQ was released on October 22 with a dual-core Intel Core i5-4200U processor clocked at 1.6GHz.

It’s been noticed, however, that recent retail models have been running on an Intel Core i5-4300U chip clocked at 1.9GHz. Besides the increased clock speed, the new chip also features Intel’s Trusted Execution Technology, which improves software security.

Various benchmark reports suggest that Microsoft made these hardware changes some time in late December, just two months on from release.

A company spokesperson told The Verge that "Microsoft routinely makes small changes to internal components over the lifetime of a product, based on numerous factors including supply chain partnerships, availability, and value for our customers."

With stocks of the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 reportedly low over Christmas, it seems as if Microsoft has refreshed its entire next batch of tablets. There’s every chance that when you pick up a new model, it will feature the new and improved processor.

One thing this does do is address the reversal in clock speed from the original Microsoft Surface Pro, which shipped with a 1.7GHz processor. Of course, the initial Surface Pro 2 model remained a seriously fast machine regardless.

Whether this speed bump also affects the Surface Pro 2’s improved battery life over the original and its cooler, quieter running state remains to be seen.

Tado Review

What is Tado?

This is the debut product from the German company of the same name. It aims to save you money on your heating bill by replacing your existing thermostat with an Internet connected alternative. This enables you to remotely monitor and adjust your heating while the tado can automatically adjust it based on time of day, weather and even if anyone is currently in the house.

It enters what will soon be a very competitive market with current leader Nest about to follow up its Nest Protect smart smoke alarm with a UK launch for its acclaimed US smart thermostat and rivals such as Insteon, Heatmeiser, Hive (from British Gas) and Owl all launching in volume in 2014.

Tado – Design

The tado system comes in three parts: the replacement thermostat known as the 'tado box', the 'tado gateway' (a small box that connects to your router), and the 'tado temperature sensor' (a portable temperature gauge).

In truth, there isn’t much to look at here. Tado has wisely opted for a minimalist, matt white finish to all three with the tado box simply a wireless receiver with a backplate and plain cover. The gateway is little larger than an elongated matchbox with LED status lights for the Link, Router and Internet connections and wireless for talking to the box.

The temperature sensor is roughly the size of a credit card reader, also communicates wirelessly and has a large solar panel that tado claims will power it indefinitely (three hours light is apparently enough for one year of charge). Build quality is functional rather than luxurious with all three using plastic, but they feel robust and are clearly designed not to draw attention.

The most obvious quirk is, unlike Nest’s fancy LED thermostat, the tado box completely does away with any physical control or temperature display. This can be quite unnerving at first, but the concept is to leave it alone and make any adjustments via your web browser, smartphone or tablet and no display or dial means you have no other choice.

Tado 3

Tado – Features

The key selling point of tado is that it adapts to you to the extent that you should be able to forget about controlling your heating completely. How it does this is with four key sensors: temperature detection, location detection, and time and weather monitoring.

The first is straightforward, the tado temperature sensor picks up the temperature wherever it is situated and wirelessly conveys it to the tado box. Location works using the tado gateway, which receives the location of any devices where you have installed the tado app and when all have left the house it turns down the temperature. When devices get closer to home tado can be set to either a) heat up the house in advance or b) start the heating as you walk in the door.

Tado 2

For time and weather monitoring the tado gateway uses its internet connection to regularly check both.

The former means it can set awake and sleeping hours for weekdays and weekends (which are manually adjustable) so it turns the heating down at night and up in the morning.

The latter checks the forecast daily, so the system knows on good days to let the sun warm your home rather than waste energy doing it.

Adjustment of all settings – including manual temperature control – can be done via Android, iOS and web browser apps, all of which are elegantly and intuitively designed.

The flaw is the lack of BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone apps because, while tado can still be controlled via a mobile browser, the app is required to detect a user’s location and automatically adjust the temperature.

We’re told a Windows Phone app is in the works.

For a family with compliant devices, however, tado makes some big claims. It says the system can cut heating costs by 31 per cent for two working people living in a 750 sq ft flat, 26 per cent for two working people with a young child in a 1180sq ft flat and 22 per cent for a family with three children and a dog living in a 1500sq ft house. But does it deliver?

Apple iWatch reportedly hit by production delays

The Apple iWatch may have hit some production snags, according to some supply chain sources.

Wearable devices, including the iWatch, have been severely impacted by some production issues if the information obtained by DigiTimes is correct.

According to “upstream supply chain” sources, the Apple iWatch is seeing less than 50 per cent yield rates due to difficulties applying surface treatments to the metal injection molded (MIM) body.

Manufacturers use a MIM process in products with complicated designs as it allows components to feature specialised shapes without losing any of its rigidity.

MIM was originally used to make the components within electronic products, but now is being used to create components on display. This means the surface treatments are necessary for durability enhancements.

The issues could cause the Apple iWatch to be delayed, along with other smartwatches like the Qualcomm Toq, which also use the MIM process.

Along with the Apple iWatch, other companies like LG, ZTE and Archos should also launch smartwatches in the near future, with the latter two confirmed for a CES 2014 launch.

The iWatch is rumoured to come in several sizes, with Apple reportedly launching slightly different designs for male and female wearers.

GTA Online to “evolve” from user suggestions, says Rockstar

GTA Online will be developed and evolved through user suggestions as well as a “huge amount” of unused GTA 5 material.

The GTA 5 multiplayer experience is no longer a “static” one, according to Rockstar North art director Aaron Garbut.

Speaking to Edge, Garbut explains that GTA Online will continue to evolve as the developer takes user comments into account as well as introducing ideas originally intended to make it into the main GTA 5 game.

“There are always things that come up during development that you want to add. Often we do, but the closer you get to release, the less that happens,” said Garbut. “I don’t feel like the game fell short, but there is undoubtedly a huge volume of plans and ideas that we wanted to do to push it further.”

What I love about GTA Online plans is that the game is no longer static. We can continue to add these things and evolve. That’s even more exciting these days, where through forums, Reddit, etc, we have a real direct connection to the people playing the game. We can respond to what they are into and what they hate more than ever.”

The latest GTA Online update introduced new multiplayer mode types and the game’s mission creator, but it seems Rockstar has grand plans when it comes to the future of GTA Online.

“With GTA Online planned as such a large part of the experience, and one which we knew we wanted to sustain, we really didn’t have the luxury of focusing solely on the single player journey. We had to ensure that the world as a coherent and of consistent quality.”

When GTA Online was announced in August, Rockstar admitted it was something the developer had been working on since GTA 3.

Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 unveiled with 16.3-megapixel sensor

The Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 has been officially unveiled, with the refreshed, Android powered compact snapper boasting a number of minor improvements.

Having launched its original Galaxy branded camera back in 2012, the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 has now been officially unveiled, with the incremental update seeing the second-generation device retain the same 16.3-megapixel sensor and 21x optical zoom.

"Consumers love the Galaxy Camera and this next-generation version is designed to improve on the successful predecessor, with upgraded and new features that will enhance the photography experience,” Simon Stanford, Vice President of the Samsung UK IM division stated.

He added: “The result is a more powerful and portable device, which continues to embrace the public's passion for the social features of smartphones, yet also provides superior image control and quality.”

Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 Features

With only minor improvements over the original, the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 specs sheet sees the same headline features, with a 4.8-inch HD touchscreen display providing ample real estate for image playback and the Android interface.

Featuring the same 16.3-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 adds a 21x optical zoom although software improvements see 28 pre-set modes enhance the camera’s ease of use.

Offering some hardware improvements over its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 has jumped to a 1.6GHz quad-core processor from a 1.4GHz offering, while Android 4.3 Jelly Bean now runs the show alongside 2GB of RAM.

Giving the internet-connected snapper some added staying power, the camera’s battery life has jumped with the power supply moving from a 1650mAh Lithium-ion battery to a 2000mAh offering.

Lining up slightly larger than its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 measures in a 19.3mm thick and 132.5mm long. Despite growing in size, the Galaxy Camera 2 has shed a few grams, weighing in at 283g.

Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 Release Date and Price

Although Samsung has yet to confirm an official Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 release date for the UK or any pricing details, the company has confirmed the snapper will be on show at CES 2014 next week.

Stay tuned for our hands-on opinion of the smart camera direct from the show.

Samsung Galaxy S5 to launch alongside metal Galaxy F?

Samsugn Galaxy S4

The Galaxy S5 will probably have the same plastic body as the S4...

New information has surfaced to suggest Samsung will launch the Samsung Galaxy S5 alongside the metal bodied Samsung Galaxy F.

According to a report, the metallic prototype of the Samsung Galaxy F was developed in Europe and has now been transferred to a new Samsung production plant in Vietnam.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 will be launched first with the Samsung Galaxy F launched soon afterwards.

Previous rumours have suggested that the Samsung Galaxy F will be the first in a new “super-premium” line of smartphones, with the Galaxy F being the highest-end version of the Galaxy S5.

It is unclear whether the Samsung Galaxy F will only be different in material or it will have a better set of specs than the Galaxy S5.

One rumour suggested the Galaxy S5 will have a 1080p Full HD display, while the Galaxy F will ramp the resolution up to QHD 2K 2,560 x 1,600p.

Although the Samsung Galaxy S5 was originally rumoured to offer a full metal body, it seems this will be reserved for the Galaxy F.

However, according to some leaked benchmarks, the Galaxy S5 should have a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with 3GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 GPU.

It should run Android 4.4 KitKat and feature a 16-megapixel camera in the rear, with a secondary 2-megapixel option in the front.

The specs sheet should also include 32GB of internal storage as standard.

Originally the Galaxy S5 was believed to have a flexible or curved form factor like the Samsung Galaxy Curve, but this has since been disproved by the latest leaked information.

Samsung is heavily rumoured to launch the Galaxy S5 at an event around the same time as MWC 2014, with a release date sometime in March.

iPhone owners smarter than Samsung or BlackBerry users survey finds

Your phone says a lot about you and now, according to a consumer test, iPhone owners can boast to be the smartest of all smartphone owners.

According to a new survey, iPhone owners have been found to be more intelligent than their Samsung handset, BlackBerry device or Nexus phone owning counterparts.

The study, carried out by betting firm Ladbrokes tested 1,000 UK smartphone owners. Having asked participants to register the manufacturer of their phone first, those quizzed were then tasked with answering a series of brainteasers to test their general knowledge, problem solving skills and pattern recognition.

With participants unable to progress to the next question until they had correctly selected which of the multiple choice answers was correct, total user times were then used to determine which smartphone owners are the brightest.

According to the study, which we must stress is more a light-hearted social experiment that hard science, found that iPhone owners were the brainiest, completing the seven question challenge in an average time of just 94 seconds.

Hot on the heels of iPhone owners were users of Google’s owner-branded Nexus handsets, with an average completion time just five seconds slower at 99 seconds.

Although a Samsung handset owner clocked the quickest overall time with a 47 second test completion, overall Samsung owners could only record the third fastest average at 103 seconds.

With HTC and Nokia handset owners finishing in fourth and fifth respectively with average times of 105 and 109 seconds, BlackBerry owners were found to be the least intelligent, and not just because their phones are still stuck in the past.

Not even close to the rest of the field, BlackBerry owners could only manage an average test time of 118 seconds, almost half a minute slower than iPhone owners.

Let us know what you think your smartphone might say about you?

Asus VivoTab Note 8

The manual reveals some new details

The official Asus website has confirmed the Asus VivoTab Note 8 after it published a manual for the device.

Although the VivoTab Note 8 has yet to be officially announced, the official website suddenly listed a user manual for the 8-inch tablet.

The 8-inch Windows tablet was originally spotted passing through the FCC, with specs leaked in December, but this is the first official word we’ve had on the device.

According to the manual, the 8-inch version of the Asus VivoTab will support pen input and even comes bundled with its own stylus.

“The bundled stylus pen allows you to input commands on your VivoTab Note 8. With your stylus pen, you can make selections, draw or sketch on the touch screen panel,” reads the manual.

The Windows button for the VivoTab 8 is also situated on the side of the tablet, similar to the Dell Venue Pro 8.

Asus VivoTab Note 8 Rumours

The specs for the Asus VivoTab Note 8 leaked online in December and suggested the tablet will have an 8-inch 1280 x 800p HD resolution and IPS technology.

It will run on an Intel Atom Z3740 quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. You’ll also get a free copy of Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student Edition as standard.

Asus will also apparently offer a new Bluetooth TransKeyboard accessory separately, which is compatible with the 8-inch VivoTab.

Mac Pros won’t be available in stores until March or April

Mac Pro

Got production issues with your Mac Pros Apple?

The Mac Pro may not be available to in store customers until March or April due to production issues.

The only way to purchase a new Mac Pro desktop computer will be via the Apple online store until March or April, according to an Apple Australia business sales specialist.

The specialist has been advised to direct all Mac Pro sales to the Apple online store, as the high street stores will not have any stock for several months.

Apple started marketing its shiny new Mac Pro models in June, but customers could only start ordering the desktop Macs in December.

So far only a handful of customers received their Mac Pros by December 30, Apple’s self-imposed shipping deadline and these were seemingly the basic configuration models.

Online, the Mac Pro deliveries have been delayed until February, having been originally scheduled for a January delivery window.

The new Mac Pro is the first huge design overall the desktop PC has had in several years, with new models featuring a cylindrical aluminium body just 9.9-inches tall. In fact, the new model takes up an eight of the space required by the previous iteration.

“It’s not a stretch to say people have been blown away by this incredible new design,” said Phil Schiller when unveiling the Mac Pro. “It is a computer that packs an incredible amount of power into one-eighth the volume of the previous model. It is our vision of the future of the pro desktop. There are so many innovations, it is simply remarkable.”

It seems Apple is having major production issues with its new Mac Pro, something that has plagued the iPad mini 2 and iPhone 5S as well.

Archos to launch its first smartwatch and connected home devices at CES 2014

Archos smartwatch teaser

It's going to be a busy CES for Archos

Archos is poised to launch a host of new products at CES 2014, including its first smartwatch.

The French company has posted an Archos smartwatch teaser picture on the official website, suggesting the company will launch the new device next week at CES.

Sources suggest that the Archos smartwatch will be compatible with iOS and Android devices like the Pebble smartwatch.

Unlike its Samsung Galaxy Gear and Sony SmartWatch 2 rivals, the Archos offering will also come with a price as low as £50. This may well be the key to its success.

From the teaser image, it seems the Archos smartwatch will have a black and white e-paper display like an eReader or the Pebble smartwatch too, rather than the full colour displays of the others.

The display on the Archos smartwatch also hints at a launch date for the device – January 5 – suggesting Archos may opt for an early CES unveiling.

A new “connected home” section on the Archos website, and an accompanying YouTube video also state that the company will launch a range of new devices at CES 2014.

There will be an Archos Activity Tracker, Archos Blood Pressure Monitor and an Archos Connected Scale capable of recognising four different users.

As the centre point for all the devices will be the Archos Connected Self App, which will also provide eight users with health tracking, activity graphs and other key metrics.

“Mobile devices have become the centre of our life and our demand for instant access to information creates the need for even more interconnectivity,” said CEO of Archos Loic Poirer. “Archos’ new line-up of connected objects exemplifies the ability to share and access information and represents our vision of creating a universe where all devices complement and work together.”

There’s also an Archos Smart Home App or a Smart Home tablet to be had, which offer a gateway to your connected devices. You’ll be able to customise actions depending on your habits and various activities to address security issues.

Archos will also launch an Archos Weather Station temperature and precipitation gauge at CES 2014.

CES 2014 starts on January 6 and TrustedReviews will be there to bring you all the news as it happens.

Snapchat hack sees data from 4.6 million users stolen

A major Snapchat hack has been reported, with the picture messaging service confirming the personal details of some 4.6 million users have been stolen.

Just days after Australian firm Gibson Security warned of potential vulnerabilities in the globally popular Snapchat service, the usernames and personal phone numbers of millions of users have been stolen and posted online through a website entitled SnapchatDB.

Although the website has since been pulled, a cached list of all the hacked Snapchat user details is still doing the rounds online.

Available as an iOS and Android app, Snapchat allows users to share images for free, with all pictures being automatically deleted once they have been viewed.

With Gibson Security having warned that a vulnerability in the Snapchat ‘Find Friends’ service could be exploited to discover users’ phone numbers, those responsible for the hack have claimed this is exactly the method they used.

“We used a modified version of gibsonsec’s exploit/method,” the hackers are reported to have stated. Looking to avoid responsibility, Gibson Security has claimed it has no involvement with the hack.

"We know nothing about SnapchatDB, but it was [only] a matter of time till something like that happened,” the company Tweeted.

In a recent statement Snapchat spokespeople claimed the service had implemented a number of safeguards to combat against hacks.

They stated: “We recently added additional counter-measures and continue to make improvements to combat spam and abuse."

Although this hack marks the first major security breech, Snapchat has courted controversy, with parent and child protection groups expressing their concerns at youngsters being exposed to potentially inappropriate and exploitive images.

Snapchat has yet to announce any new measures which will be enforced to help secure users’ data from potential hacks.

PS4 outsold Xbox One in UK in 2013

PS4 and Xbox One controllers

The PS4 wins in hardware sales in the UK

The PS4 has proved to be more popular than the Xbox One in the UK since both launched at the tail end of 2013.

Both Sony and Microsoft posted impressive sales figures for their next-generation consoles for their respective opening weekends, but the PS4 has proved stronger overall.

PS4 sales have passed 530,000 units in the UK in the five weeks since it launched on November 29 in the UK. The staggering figure was recorded by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) using Chart-Track data.

Xbox One sales on the other hand only amounted to 364,000. This is obviously still an incredible figure but pales in comparison to the PS4.

Both sales figures are significantly higher than any other console launch, including the Xbox 360 and PS3 launches.

“Games continue to deliver digital sales strongly, but it was disappointing that Xbox One and PS4 came so late in 2013 and then huge demand meant stock sold out quickly,” said ERA Director General Kim Bayley. “Retailers will be working hard in 2014 to maintain the sales momentum of these two great new pieces of kit.”

In hardware sales alone, the PS4 generated £181.8 million on the UK high street, and the Xbox One made £144.5 million.

This means the UK market gained £326 million from next-generation console hardware sales. This doesn’t take software sales into account at all.

The majority of online retailers now have Xbox One consoles in stock, but most are still showing the PS4 as out of stock. A few select bundles are available, but these tend to be the highest priced options.

LG Lifeband Touch leaks ahead of expected CES 2014 unveiling

Images of the LG Lifeband Touch, a new wrist worn fitness tracker from the Korean manufacturer, have leaked online ahead of the device’s expected CES 2014 unveiling next week.

Although LG has yet to formally announce the Nike FuelBand SE rival, Twitter-based serial tech tipster @Evleaks has teased an image of the upcoming fitness tracker, suggesting the gadget’s release could be imminent.

While images of the FitBit Flex challenger have surfaced, concrete specifications and details on the device are still few and far between. According to latest reports, however, it has been suggested that the wrist wear will play host to an integrated accelerometer and a swipeable LCD display.

Far from the company’s first efforts at a wearable fitness-tracking gadget, the LG Lifeband Touch looks set to follow the LG Smart Activity Tracker unveiled during last year’s CES.

A prototype fitness tracker that was capable of being synced with LG branded TVs to make use of bespoke fitness programming, the LG Smart Activity Tracker failed to make it to a consumer release. Now, the new LG Lifeband Touch is believed to be an extension of this early prototype.

With images of the mooted LG Lifeband Touch showing a green circular button, it has been suggested that this will act as an integrated heart rate monitor, with users able to read their pulse by simply placing a finger on the sensor.

One of a number of wearables expected to be unveiled during CES 2014, the LG Lifeband Touch will reportedly share the stage with a separate LG smartwatch.

CES 2014 will be held in Las Vegas between January 6 and January 10. TrustedReviews will be on hand to bring you all the latest from the tech industry’s biggest players.

LG WebOS TV interfaced leaked

LG WebOS TV

Our first look at the LG WebOS TV

The first image of the LG WebOS TV interface has been leaked online, ahead of an official reveal at CES 2013.

LG is due to launch its WebOS powered TVs at a press conference at CES 2013 next week, but the first screenshot of the device has been leaked online.

Coming courtesy of the prolific tipster, @evleaks, the image suggests LG is keeping the original “cards” system of the original WebOS incarnation.

The south Korean electronics giant acquired WebOS from HP in February, 2013 and will seemingly be retaining the software’s initial layout.

From the image, we can see WebOS apps for LG TV will include YouTube, Facebook, Skype, Twitter and other services.

LG bigwigs already indicated the company is throwing a lot of weight (and money) behind the open-source JavaScript development framework.

The WebOS operating system was developed by Palm Inc to power smartphones at first. HP bought Palm and WebOS with it in 2010 and used the software in its smartphones and tablets.

However, the WebOS system failed to attract developers, but LG was drawn to the software because of the technology it contains.

LG will officially showcase the WebOS TVs at its press conference on Monday January 6, along with the recently rumoured LG G Arch smartwatch.

The LG G Arch could well offer a curved touchscreen display, similar to that featured in the LG G Flex, the first consumer available flexible smartphone.

LG could also announce a second smartwatch offering at MWC 2013, supposedly aimed as a Nike FuelBand or Fitbit Flex rival. This LG G Health smartwatch will probably be a fitness and wellbeing tracker.

Samsung Galaxy Note 12.2 specs and new UI confirmed

More spec information appears to have leaked concerning Samsung’s forthcoming super-sized tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note 12.2.

Samsung is set to reveal its bold new 12-inch tablet at CES 2014, which kicks off in a week’s time. As is usually the case with such things, we already have a pretty good idea of what that device will entail.

A fresh internet report has added extra meat to those bones of information. Samsung fan blog Sammobile recently received tips on the Galaxy Note 12.2 spec sheet. In short, it seems that those earlier leaked specs were spot on.

This means that it will have a 12.2-inch 2560 x 1600 display, a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, 3GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel camera. It’ll also run on Android 4.4.2 KitKat, which is something we haven’t seen yet in a Samsung tablet.

Interestingly, that change in OS will also signal a change in Samsung’s divisive TouchWiz UI. The report is unable to go into details, but apparently "Samsung is changing its usual tablet UI to something more unique."

The site refers to the new tablet as the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, suggesting that Samsung means business this time around.

Apparently those previously leaked AnTuTu benchmarks (it scored 34,261) do the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 a bit of a disservice. They’re a little undercooked owing to the nature of the test software the device was running on at the time, and apparently it’s more than capable of hitting a tasty 40,000 points on final software.

It seems we know what form the Samsung Galaxy Note 12.2 will take, then, but we’re intrigued to see Samsung’s latest attempt at UI design. Roll on CES 2014.

Google shutting down Bump apps already

Google is shutting down the Bump app just four months after acquiring it.

The software giant bought Bump, a company that facilitates the wireless sharing of information between devices, back in September. Now it’s shutting down the Bump app itself, as well as the smaller company’s Flock app.

In a posting over on the official Bump blog, CEO and cofounder David Lieb revealed the news. He claims that "we are now deeply focused on our new projects within Google, and we’ve decided to discontinue Bump and Flock."

All of which makes it sound like Bump had a say in the fate of its Google-owned products, which we highly doubt.

Both Bump and Flock will be removed from the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store on January 31. After this, the apps will stop functioning altogether, and any user data will be deleted.

Bump has ensured that such user data can be preserved. Just open either of the apps before the end of the month and you’ll receive guidance on exporting your data.

The Bump app that made the company’s name allowed you to transfer your contact information, as well as photos and videos, simply by bumping two smartphones together. It also made syncing such data with your computer a similarly simple process.

Flock, meanwhile, allowed for a single shared album to be formed automatically from multiple people’s phones. It detected which friends were in the relevant images and shared accordingly.

It’s not unusual for Google to close down the main services of the companies it acquires - the company is typically after the technology and patents behind a service rather than the service itself - but the rapid turnaround between the acquisition and closure of Bump’s apps is certainly notable here.

Sony Windows Phone handsets to launch this year

Sony looks set to turn its back on its Android reliance, with the Japanese manufacturer tipped to launch a range of Windows Phone handsets later this year.

Despite Sony Mobile having focused solely on smartphones running Google’s Android operating system, new reports have suggested that Microsoft has contacted the manufacturer in a bid to drum-up new partnerships for its Windows Phone platform.

Citing an unnamed “person who was involved in the talks,” The Information has reported that Sony is one of a number of manufacturers on Microsoft’s hit list, with Chinese phone maker ZTE also contacted by the Redmond-based company.

Although Sony is widely expected to unveil new smartphone lines during both CES 2014 next week and MWC 2014 in February, it is not believed that the company’s first Windows Phone handsets will be showcased until around the middle part of the year.

While the Windows Phone platform has struggled to match the might of the leading players, Android and iOS, the emerging smartphone OS saw considerable growth during 2013 thanks to the likes of the flagship Nokia Lumia 1020.

With the Windows Phone platform gaining traction over the past 12 months, Sony also saw its smartphone efforts increase in popularity over the past year with the Sony Xperia Z1 helping bringing the manufacturer back into the mainstream smartphone fold.

Sony has yet to comment on reports of its upcoming Windows Phone handsets and so these claims should be taken with a liberal serving of salt.
