PS4 release date: Retail packaging unveiled ahead of November 29 launch

Ahead of the November 29 PS4 release date, Sony has officially unveiled the PS4 retail packaging, giving gamers an idea of what they can expect.

Continuing the colour schemes which have adorned much of the PS4 promotional materials to date, the PS4 release date will see consoles head to retailers in blue and white boxes, with the usual console image and storage details on show.

With just a little over a month to go until the PS4 release date, the console’s retail packaging was unveiled via the Twitter feed of Chris Owen, Sony’s Community Manager for PlayStation Europe.

The PS4 release date was officially announced by Sony during its Gamescom 2013 press conference back in August. The next-gen console will hit UK retailers on November 29.

Landing in UK two weeks after its global launch debut in the US simultaneously, the November 29 PS4 UK release date will see the console go head-to-head with the Xbox One release date, a launch that has been set one week earlier on November 22. The PS4 release date for US based gamers is November 15.

Making the PS4 release date announcement, Andrew House, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment stated: “PlayStation 4 will be launching in 32 countries this holiday season and will be made available in North America on the 15th of November and in Europe on the 29th of November.”

He added: “2013 is the year when interactive entertainment takes a massive leap forward with the launch of the PS4.”

Watch our PS4 vs PS3 video as we go hands-on with Sony's next-gen console.

With the PS4 release date and price now confirmed, the Sony branded console seemingly has the edge over its Microsoft produced rival, with the Xbox One release date set for November. What’s more, the PS4 price is £80 cheaper than that of the Xbox One, heading to retailers priced £349 compared with the Xbox’s £429 price tag.

The PS4 is set to be bestowed with a raft of new and exclusive games at launch, with the likes of Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and Infamous Second Son all to be made available for the PS3 follow on.

Further PS4 games set to feature at launch include the likes of Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 and FIFA 14. A number of further high-profile games are all set to hit the console in the near future too with Bungie’s Destiny topping the eagerly awaited list.

iPhone 5C sales predications slashed as interest wanes

Apple’s mid-range colourful smartphone is reportedly facing low consumer interest, with iPhone 5C sales predictions being slashed by analysts.

With iPhone 5C sales said to be around 33 per cent lower than originally anticipated, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has cut his sales predictions for the recently announced handset and cheaper sibling to the flagship iPhone 5S.

Despite iPhone 5S stock shortages having plagued the launch of the high-end Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One rival, Kuo has claimed that consumers have not been dropping down to the iPhone 5C as expected, with the 11.4 million iPhone 5C handset shipped in Q3 a third lower than anticipated.

Further compounding Apple’s reported iPhone 5C struggles, it is now predicted that Q4 iPhone 5C shipments will drop to 10.4 million units, a 10 per cent quarterly drop ahead of the usually strong Christmas sales period.

Although iPhone 5C sales are considerably lower than expected, Kuo has suggested that overall iPhone sales will remain strong, with interest in the iPhone 5S, and the now free on contract iPhone 4S helping pick up the slack.

Available in a selection of colours, the polycarbonate bodied iPhone 5C has replaced the iPhone 5, with a near identical array of specs wrapped within a cheaper form factor.

With a 4-inch Retina display, the iPhone 5C specs sheet sees an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera line up alongside an A6 dual-core processor.

Despite reportedly low interest, Apple claimed that it had shifted 9 million iPhones during the launch weekend of both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C last month.

With 16GB and 32GB storage capacities available, the iPhone 5C price is not as cheap as the phones unofficial ‘budget iPhone’ billing would have you believe. The two storage options of the phone cost wannabe owners a premium £469 and £549 respectively. In a bid to combat this lofty pricing, a number of US retailers have already slashed their iPhone 5C prices.

Amazon wants YouTube stars for instant video push

Amazon is pitching deals to the most popular content creators on YouTube, in a bid to bolster its Instant Video offering, according to reports on Friday.

AdAge says the company wants to include the cream of the web's short videos within its streaming properties, which also include the UK's Lovefilm service.

The report claimed that if a deal is struck popular channels will get their own pages on Instant Video and Lovefilm, giving them an opportunity to boost exposure and earn a few extra quid in the process through pay-per-video offerings.

Any move, which isn't likely until next year, would likely put Amazon in direct competition with YouTube in an arena currently dominated by the Google-owned video sharing platform.

Not only would it boost its battle against the likes of Netflix and US-based Hulu, but it could also give Amazon a shot at taking on iTunes.

The ad-age report suggests content like popular how-to videos would be indexed on Amazon, allowing users to search and access the clips on demand.

"That overarching goal of Amazon to create the one video service to rule them all is the right goal, but a handful of YouTube videos won't get you quite there," said aid Forrester Research principal analyst James McQuivey.

The company is also rumoured to be launching a set-top box to rival Apple TV and the newly-renamed Apple TV platform, so it's likely that the addition of short-form videos would give viewers more to look at.

iPhone 5S apps crashing twice as often as iPhone 5 and 5C

Owners of Apple's new iPhone 5S handset are dealing with twice as many app crashes as those still rocking the iPhone 5 or those who opted for the iPhone 5C, a new study has claimed.

Figures from the Crittercism group claim programs crash two percent of the time for the iPhone 5S, compared with under 1 per cent for the iPhone 5S and year-old iPhone 5 handset.

The group looked at hundreds of app launches on all three phones to reach its conclusions, with all three devices running on the new iOS 7 software.

The company's CEO Andrew Levy told AllThingsD that the issues are common with new hardware and software and will likely be ironed out soon.

He said: "Anytime there is new hardware or software release, we see issues. Inevitably, over time, those issues get resolved.”

“The good news is that Apple is certainly aware of issues They’ve pushed out two iOS updates for iOS 7 … Apple is doing a really good job of addressing these issues as they come up.”

The reason apps are crashing on the iPhone 5S rather than the other two iOS 7 devices may be due to the shift to Apple's new 64-bit A7 processor, but so far Apple has done an admirable job of making the transition as easy as possible for its app developers.

When pushed for comment, Apple declined.

Are you experiencing more app crashes with the iPhone 5S than on earlier models? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Samsung Galaxy S4 battery issues reported, 30 per cent of users effected

A number of Samsung Galaxy S4 battery issues have surfaced, with reports stating that up to 30 per cent of S4 owners have reported problems with their phone’s staying power.

Citing a “trusted source working at an operator,” German site MobiFlip has claimed that Samsung Galaxy S4 battery issues are plaguing users of the phone. It has been suggested that heavily depleted performances and swollen batteries are being frequently reported by S4 owners.

A trusted contact who is sitting right at the source with a German provider confirms that the current confirmations are due to a faulty battery with the Galaxy S4,” the German reports have stated.

Although battery drain is a natural evolutionary issue which affects all portable products, with the Samsung Galaxy S4 having been on sale for just six months, the flagship smartphone should not be troubled by such problems this early in its lifecycle.

We have contacted Samsung for their response to the reported Samsung Galaxy S4 battery issues and will update you with their response as soon as we hear back.

While the Samsung Galaxy S4 battery issues are said to be widespread within Germany, we have yet to hear reports of similar issues further afield.

Currently the company’s flagship offering, recent reports have suggested that due to lower than expected interest the Samsung Galaxy S4 could be superseded sooner than expected.

Following the iPhone 5S release last month, reports out of Samsung’s native Korea has claimed that a Samsung Galaxy S5 release date could be announced in January, three months earlier than expected.

Nexus 5 pictures leak showing colourful Android 4.4 KitKat

Android 4.4 KitKat running on the Nexus 5

Android 4.4 KitKat running on the Nexus 5

New pictures of the heavily rumoured Google Nexus 5 have appeared online, revealing fresh screenshots of Android 4.4 KitKat.

The Android KitKat images show off a later build than we’ve seen in previous leaked screenshots and include details of several new features.

Strongly reminiscent of the Moto X, this version of Android 4.4 KitKat bears the a build number KRS92B and Kernel 3.4.0, which suggests this is a near finished or final build of Google’s next mobile OS.

The new screenshots come from Italian site, Tutto Android. They show that the notifications bar will offer white icons rather than the blue or cyan found in Android 4.3 Jelly Bean or previous iterations.

In the main Settings Menu is a new “Tap & Pay” function that should make NFC play a larger part in the Nexus 5 than in its predecessor, the Nexus 4. The Tap and Pay feature will most likely tie-in with Google Wallet.

Location has now been divided into three distinct modes: device sensors, battery saving and high accuracy. Device sensors will only allow the GPS to be used, while battery saving mode just relies on Wi-Fi and your mobile network. High accuracy is the most battery draining of the three modes, with the Nexus 5 having access to GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks.

Similar to the recent iOS 7 refresh for iPhone and iPad, Android 4.4 KitKat will introduce a new colour scheme and wallpapers for smartphones and tablets. The icons looks slightly flatter too, and the lockscreen has a different configuration.

The Google Now circle is more prominent on the Lock Screen with Android KitKat and Google has seemingly introduced a fading gradient to the top and bottom of the display.

The Phone icon on your basic home screen is also different to that of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Apparently, you can say “Ok Google” to the Nexus 5 from the homescreen to attract the smartphone’s attention as it has the same always listening mode as the Moto X.

Xbox One debut for Top Gear's The Stig in Forza Motorsport 5

Xbox One gamers will be able to race as the "digital cousin" of Top Gear's The Stig in Forza Motorsport's fifth installment, Microsoft has confirmed.

The legend's relative will have a starring role in the Turn 10 Studios game thanks to a collaboration between BBC Worldwide and Xbox.

Fans will be able to test themselves against the test driver while playing the game and even have the opportunity to beat the "infallible" driver's cousin.

Players can also try their hand at taking on the Top Gear test track including tricky corners Hammerhead and Gambon.

In addition, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond will be on hand to give voiceovers in a new Career Mode where users have the chance to pit themselves against realistic opponents in events organised by car genre.

“Trying to beat The Stig on track has long been the petrol-fuelled dreams of Top Gear fans everywhere," said Duncan Gray, Top Gear’s Commercial Director at BBC Worldwide. "Whilst Jeremy and the team did not want to frustrate or embarrass gamers by putting forward the real Stig, they did help us track down a potentially more fallible relative of their tame racing driver.”

Forza's released on on November 22, but until then Top Gear fans can watch The Stig's digital antics in a just-released video that's launching to coincide with the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 car race taking place this Sunday in Australia.

It shows the driver whizzing around a test track in an Xbox emblazoned vehicle while the V8 Supercar crew is left unawares.

“The partnership between Forza Motorsport and Top Gear has featured many highlights over the years," said Dan Greenawalt, creative director on Forza Motorsport 5. "Including The Stig’s digital cousin in the game is a natural extension of that creative partnership.

"Now, on top of racing against the best virtual drivers in the world online or against brand new cloud-powered Drivatar opponents in career mode, players can tackle the digital cousin of one of the world’s most celebrated racing icons."

iPhone 5S users report Microsoft’s infamous Blue Screen of Death errors

iPhone 5S and the BSOD

The BSOD attacks the iPhone 5S iWorks suite

iPhone 5S users have started experiencing Microsoft’s infamous Blue Screen of Death errors on Apple’s new flagship smartphone.

Typically an error found on older Windows PCs, iPhone 5S users have to reboot their smartphones after seeing the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

It seems iPhone 5S users are experiencing the BSOD issues when using the iWorks suite that comes pre-installed with the latest iPhone duo.

“How do I resolve the blue screen error while using iWork on my iPhone 5S? When I use pages, for example, my iPhone restarts after a blue screen?” complained one Apple Discussions commenter.

There seems to be some issue with the multitasking capabilities of the iPhone 5S when trying to run any iWorks application in the background.

We tested the issue by opening Pages from the home screen, using the app for a brief period and then returning to the home screen using the Touch ID equipped home button. We too experienced the BSOD every time we repeated this short sequence, which was very irritating.

As you can see in our video below, it doesn’t take much to trigger the BSOD on the iPhone 5S, but some users have come up with a workaround for the issue. You have to return to the documents menu before hitting that home button in order to avoid the BSOD.

You can also stop Pages, Numbers and Keynote from being synched via the iCloud’s documents and data service in order to prevent the BSOD.

However, this greatly reduces the functionality of the iWorks suite as the iCloud keeps all your documents synched across all your Apple OS X and iOS devices.

It is not known whether the BSOD in an unfortunate side effect of the latest iOS 7.0.2 version, or whether it is an issue affecting fresh iPhone 5S devices as well.

The issue doesn’t seem to be affecting any other devices running iOS 7.0.2 that we’ve seen, and we tested it on an iPhone 4S and iPad mini with the latest Apple mobile OS.

Let us know if you’ve seen any iWorks issues with iOS 7.

Rockstar Games offering 500k GTA$ as compensation for GTA Online issues

Rockstar Games will be compensating frustrated GTA Online gamers with a $500,000 GTA$ payment into their game bank accounts.

Gamers who have been suffering from GTA Online access and save game problems will be rewarded for their patience with free money for their GTA 5 multiplayer characters.

“Given some of the recent technical issues during these first days of GTA Online, and now that things are starting to look much smoother (touch wood!), we are planning to provide a special stimulus package for all who have played or will play Grand Theft Auto Online this month,” said Rockstar Games.

The rewards will start appearing in player’s bank accounts soon, but no specific dates have been announced as yet.

“We will be dropping a cool half a million GTA$ in the GTA Online bank accounts of all players this month, starting as early as next week.”

Rockstar will be issuing the payments in two $250,000 deposits, the first expected to drop next week and the second before the end of the month.

Of course, there are some requirements that players must meet in order to qualify for the GTA Online compensation payments.

  • You must play or have played Grand Theft Auto Online at any time during the month of October 2013 in order to qualify for the GTA$500,000 deposit in your in-game bank account.

  • Players will first have to install a forthcoming GTAV title update which we expect to happen next week. That title update (1.04) is expected to fix the remaining instances of issues that have caused vehicle purchase loss and will also enable the functionality through which we’ll be providing this GTA$ stimulus cash to players.

Rockstar expect the payments to be automatically made, with players not required to make any additional actions in order to receive them.

“For players who experienced cloud server errors, connection issues, and lost game progress and characters in these first days of GTA Online, we hope this GTA$ helps to facilitate a fresh start or makes your continued life in Los Santos and Blaine County extra sweet.”

John Lewis: TV will take over in 2014

The TV market is set for a return to prominence, with high street retailer and electronics seller John Lewis predicting that TVs will replace smartphones and tablets as a key market in 2014.

With TVs having been superseded by portable gadgets as the latest must have devices in recent years, John Lewis has suggested that the rise of Smart TVs and 4K systems will see the TV scene once again take over in the coming months.

TV has been on the back burner for the past couple of years as you’ve seen tablets and mobile phones really dominate the consumer electronics arena, but now TV will take over once again,” Jonathan Marsh, Head Buyer for John Lewis’s electronics department said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews.

“TV is very much at the heart of what the big name manufacturers are focussing on for 2014 and it is once again at the heart of the customer’s home.”

Highlighting areas where the market is set to grow, Marsh pointed out the rise of 4K, an area of the industry he suggested is already “doing unbelievably well” and far exceeding the company’s early expectations.

“With 4K and OLED coming to market, and with all the great soundbars and the like coming through as well, the TV market is bringing families closer together and it is right at the heart of consumer electronics once again,” the retailer told us.

As well as predicted a return to prominence for the smartphone scene, John Lewis has narrowed down its expectations, stating that from next year, due to demand it will only be selling Smart TV sets.

“Smart is the new expectation consumers have when buying a TV,” Marsh said. “I don’t think John Lewis will be selling anything other than Smart TVs next year.”

4K TVs ‘doing unbelievably well’ claims retailer

Following the recent introduction of the first consumer available 4K televisions, retailer John Lewis has suggested that 4K TVs are ‘doing unbelievably well’.

Said to be exceeding early expectations, the retailer has told us that interest in the first 4K TVs has been much higher than anticipated, with the industry expected to grow dramatically over the coming months as more consumers are made aware of the latest TV technology.

4K is doing unbelievably well,” Jonathan Marsh, a Head Electricals Buyer at John Lewis said in a recent interview with TrustedReviews. He added: “Since we launched OLED, the interest in 4K UHD has increased as well.”

Suggesting that the 2014 World Cup could further boost the interest in 4K sets, with the powers that be at FIFA having recently confirmed that elements of the tournament will be recorded and broadcast in 4K, Marsh has hinted that he expects interest in 4K to continue to grow throughout the next 18 months.

“Interest in 4K will continue to grow as the trend grows this year,” he told us. “Next year you are really going to see 4K kick off as 4K TVs become a lot more affordable and you start to hit the sweet spot price points.”

The industry buyer added: “Different sized 4K TVs will be available too and you will probably see a 46-inch 4K TV come into play as well which will really help drive the market further.”

Although 4K is expected to be a driving force in future TV sales, the John Lewis representative has also highlighted Smart TV as the next must-have TV feature for many consumers.

“Smart is the new expectation consumers have when buying a TV,” Marsh said. “I don’t think John Lewis will be selling anything other than Smart TVs next year.”

Google Nexus 5 Launch Event: October 15 unveiling tipped

With Google Nexus 5 rumours hitting fever point, new reports have suggested that a Google Nexus 5 launch event will be held next week.

While the Google Nexus 4 follow-on has long been mooted to be on the cards, confirmation of exactly when the Samsung Galaxy S4 rivalling smartphone will be unveiled is still to be detailed, with latest rumours hinting at an imminent October 15 announcement.

Although Google has yet to issue official invites any upcoming launch, developers attending the recent Google Launchpad conference have claimed that word of an October 15 Google Nexus 5 launch event has been overheard, with the phone to land alongside the new Android 4.4 KitKat OS.

While still very much unofficial, the October 15 Google Nexus 5 launch event claims fit with further reports that the handset would be unveiled in the coming weeks before going on sale later this month.

According to recent Google Nexus 5 rumours, the eagerly awaited phone will be something of a powerhouse, with a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor tipped for inclusion alongside 2GB of RAM and the aforementioned Android 4.4 operating system.

Further leaked Google Nexus 5 specs have seen an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera mooted alongside a secondary, 1.6-megapixel snapper up front. With 16GB and 32GB storage options expected, the LG G2 and iPhone 5S competitor will also sport a 5-inch 1080p Full HD display, 3000mAh Lithium-Ion battery and wireless charging options alongside the usual Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC and 4G connectivity options.

Like its predecessor, the Google Nexus 5 looks set to pair a high-end array of innards alongside a budget, wallet-friendly price tag.

Based on recent leaks, the Google Nexus 5 price will be roughly “half the price” of the latest flagship Apple handset, with the 16GB and 32GB storage options tipped to set wannabe owners back just $299 (£186) and $399 (£248) respectively.

Samsung Galaxy J announced

Samsung Galaxy J

Samsung Galaxy J - big in Japan

Samsung has announced the Samsung Galaxy J, a new large-screen device aimed at the Japanese market.

The new smartphone was announced at an event held by Japanese network DoCoMo, and it would seem that the J stands for Japan. Don't expect to see it making its way west any time soon.

We hope we're wrong on that point though, as the Samsung Galaxy J appears to be a highly capable device. It's something of a mish-mash of previous Galaxy handsets, with a similar form factor to the Samsung Galaxy S4, but cutting edge internals equivalent to the recent Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

To that end it comes with a similar 5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display to the Samsung Galaxy S4, but like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 it runs on a quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU clocked at 2.3GHz and backed by 3GB of RAM.

It also features a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 2,600mAh battery, and the usual connectivity gubbins such as NFC and LTE.

Externally, despite its Galaxy S4 dimensions, the Samsung Galaxy J looks a lot more like the Galaxy Note 3. It's got the same square edges and abruptly rounded corners as the larger device.

The Samsung Galaxy J will hit Japanese shops later this month in three bright colours - Coral Pink, Satin White and Lapis Blue.

Earlier in the week Samsung announced the Samsung Galaxy Round for the Korean market, which comes with an innovative curved screen and accompanying 'Round Interaction' interface elements.

Add in rumours that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be brought forward to January, and it seems as if the company is intent on continuing its attempts to flood the market with Galaxy phones.

Google TV set to make way for Android TV

Google is rumoured to be axing Google TV in favour of a new approach with a new name - Android TV.

The company's vision for a living room box has failed to gain traction with customers, leading to a bit of a rethink from the software giant.

A new report from GigaOm claims that Google is in the process of rebranding and realigning its Google TV service with hardware partners.

Just three years after the first Google TV device rolled off the shelves, it's suggested that Google will shift to a new TV software model that mirrors its work in smartphones - hence the new Android TV moniker.

Android TV, it's claimed, will allow hardware manufacturers to add their own custom interfaces onto Google's bare bones framework. Indeed, the report claims that we've already seen the fruits of this realignment from Google.

Last month Sony launched a new Smart TV adaptor called the Bravia TV, which is based on the latest version of Google TV. However, Sony's marketing blurb didn't make mention of that fact at all. All it said was that the device brought "the full power of Google services to your TV." LG used similar wording when announcing its latest devices.

Even more tellingly, Swiss chipset manufacturer STMicroelectronics recently announced its support for Google TV products. However, there was no mention of Google TV itself in the announcement, with the company instead noting that the SDK "allows the development of Android-compliant devices and supports the latest Google services for TV."

To top it all off, even those working on the Google TV software itself have begun dropping the name from their biographies in favour of Android TV. They also dubbed a recent developer event held in Seoul an "Android TV Developer Day."

Those bored of tech journos whinging on about wanting stock Android on their phones should brace themselves - it looks like that argument is set to spill into the living room.

Twitter trialling breaking news deliveries via direct message

In the last couple of years, Twitter has become arguably the digital world's forefront destination for immediate breaking news updates.

Users feeds are littered with updates from the world of news, sport, politics and current affairs as they happen, while ongoing stories are continually updated from news organisations and eye witnesses before traditional online and broadcast media are able to prepare their reports.

Now the social network wants to take this one step further by trialling ways to bring these breaking news updates directly to users without the need to check or refresh their news feed.

The company is working on ways to notify users of stories they may be interested in by sending updates via Direct Messages. Twitter has set up a new account called @EventParrot where users can sign up to become part of the experiment.

The verified account, which has already gained 15,000 followers, features the biography: "This is a Twitter experiment. Follow me to receive direct messages that help you keep up with what's happening in the world."

The first message sent to followers informed followed that "Rebels have kidnapped Libya's prime minister, his spokeswoman told CNN," along with a link to the CNN story.

Other than that, there has been no official comment from Twitter on the experiment, save for designer Paul Stamatiou's confirmation to The Next Web that the company is behind the project.

The launch of the EventParrot account bares resemblance to the social network's @MagicRecs initiative which sent willing users links to tweets they may be interested in via direct messages.

MagicRecs is now part of the Twitter mobile ecosystem, so it seems fair to suggest that if the EventParrot trial goes well then it could become the norm before too long.

Is Nokia plotting to launch a laptop alongside tablet and phablet at Nokia World?

Nokia may be preparing to spring a surprise at its Nokia World event later this month, by returning to the laptop market, judging by an official image released by the company on Thursday.

Ahead of its October 22 event in Abu Dhabi, the company offered a teaser encouraging users to 'watch the action on your screen of choice.' The image depicts a smartphone, a tablet and a laptop computer. Intriguing to say the least.

It has long been suspected that Nokia will launch the Lumia 1520, set to be the first Full HD 1080p Windows Phone device, alongside the Nokia 'Sirius' tablet - a full 10.1-inch model running on the Windows RT operating system and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.,

However, the launch of a laptop would constitute somewhat of a shock. There have been no hints and leaks in the last few months, and they have been particularly prominent in the build up to recent Nokia launches.

Also, the company's last foray into the notebook market with the Nokia Booklet back in 2009 was largely forgettable, so why would it be plotting a comeback?

In a post on the Nokia Conversations blog, the company wrote: "the webcast from the event will be broadcast right here on Conversations, so that you can watch the action on your screen of choice!"

It's also possible that all Nokia is doing is promoting the availability of the stream across multiple platforms rather than teasing the launch of an own-branded laptop.

Nokia is live streaming the event to the world on October 22 from 8am UK time, which is less than two weeks away, so we won't have to wait long to see what they company has up its sleeve.

Would you jump on board with a Nokia laptop? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Multiple industry sources have indicated the open world game, currently available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, will come out on PC in the first quarter of 2014,” Eurogamer has reported in regards to a potential GTA 5 PC release date.

With Rockstar continuing to remain tight-lipped on a GTA 5 PC release, gamers have become increasingly vocal in their demands for the game, with more than 600,000 signatures having been added to an online petition to get the latest Grand Theft Auto title on to PC.

Ahead of last month’s GTA 5 release date, an official Rockstar spokesperson stated: “We don't have anything to share about the possibility of a next-gen or a PC platform release at this time and we are completely focused on delivering the best possible experience for the consoles people have right now."

Although Rockstar has to date failed to confirm a GTA 5 PC release, other sources have hinted at the game making the jump, including Nvidia’s Senior Director of Investor Relations, Chris Evenden.

During a recent earning call, Evenden stated: "[PC] gamers are preparing their systems for a strong roster of games coming this fall, including blockbuster franchises such as Call of Duty: Ghosts, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Assassin's Creed 4.”

An Nvidia spokesperson later passed Evenden’s comments off as a slip of the tongue, claiming the company had no knowledge of GTA 5 PC release.

Rockstar has yet to comment on the latest GTA 5 PC release rumours and as such we suggest the latest rumours are taken somewhat lightly.

BT and EE sign mobile network deal

BT will re-launch its consumer mobile operations after a new partnership was signed with EE.

The agreement between the companies will enable BT to use the EE network as part of a wholesale contract, including the EE 4G network.

“BT and EE have signed an agreement to proceed, on an exclusive basis, to a contract for EE to provide mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) services to BT’s customers and employees”, reads the official press release. “The multi-year agreement, subject to final contract, further strengthens the existing relationship in telecommunications between BT and EE.”

The financial details of the deal have yet to be disclosed, but the agreement will allow BT to re-enter the mobile network market after the company has been focused on television and broadband for the past number of years.

Speaking to the Financial Times, a BT executive explained that the company wished to offer its customers what it is calling “quad play” bundles of TV, broadband, mobile and landline contracts.

The EE deal comes after BT decided terminated a similar deal it had with Vodafone, following Vodafone’s Cable & Wireless Worldwide purchase last year.

O2 also was said to have put in a bid to provide BT with access to its 3G and 4G networks.

BT will return to the retail mobile market 11 years after it broke ties with O2, formerly known as BT Cellnet.

Business customers who are signed up to BT will now be able to utilise the EE 4G network, which already covers 100 locations across the UK.

BT may also be able to supplement EE’s 4G offering with its own service, as the company purchased £186.5 million worth of 4G mobile spectrum as part of the Ofcom auction in January.

Samsung Galaxy S5 release date tipped for surprise January announcement

A Samsung Galaxy S5 release date could be with us a lot sooner than expected, with latest reports suggesting the phone could be unveiled in January.

With the existing Samsung Galaxy S4 said to be suffering from considerably lower sales than the manufacturer had anticipated, it has been reported that Samsung is to rush forward its Samsung Galaxy S5 release date in a bid to better compete with the likes of the iPhone 5S.

While we must stress that at present this is nothing more than a slightly speculative rumour and as such should be taken with a considerable pinch of salt, it is not the first time we have heard musings of an early S5 arrival.

The Galaxy S5 is equipped with new technology and is rumoured to be released in January next year,” a translation of reports on Korean news outlet Naver has suggested. Narrowing down the mooted Samsung Galaxy S5 release date further, the reports have hinted that the phone could be unveiled on January 10, a launch which would see it coincide with the latter stages of CES 2014.

Citing unnamed insider sources, the Korean reports have stated that “in January the image of the next-generation Galaxy S5 [will be] officially announced.” They added that “one month later, in February [it will] then go into full-scale sales.”

Expected to be a dramatic overhaul to the manufacturer’s flagship phone range, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has been rumoured to be the first S branded handset with a premium metal body in a bid to match the likes of the HTC One.

Elsewhere, Samsung has already confirmed that the phone will play host to a 64-bit processor after Apple confirmed the iPhone 5S was powered by the PC esque architecture. “Our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality,” Samsung’s CEO of Mobile Shin Jong-Kyun said in a recent interview.

While further Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours have pointed to the phone being waterproof and dustproof as standard, Samsung has confirmed that the phone will not sport and integrated fingerprint scanner like some of its rivals.

iPhone 6: Analyst confident about approximate 5-inch screen

An analyst currently doing the tour of Apple supply chains has received word the iPhone 6 will feature a larger screen when it is released next year.

Brian White of Cantor Fitzgerald (previously of Topeka Capital), a notorious Apple tipster, has said he is “confident” the iPhone 6 will pack a larger screen than the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

Supporting previous rumours that the iPhone 6 will feature a 4.7-inch screen, White suggests the screen size will lie around the 5-inch marker.

White is currently touring tech supply chain vendors in China who work with Apple, several of which indicated that a larger iPhone is on the cards for 2014.

“Given today’s meeting, we are confident that a larger iPhone (approximately five inches) will become a reality in 2014”, said White.

Apple has already enlarged the original iPhone screen from 3.5- to 4-inches between the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

However, it seems more and more likely Apple will be increasing the screen for the iPhone 6 to around 5-inches. This was originally suggested by Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, who is notoriously well connected.

Kuo did suggest that Apple is unlikely to go any larger than 5-inches due to the company’s “unwavering principle of one hand use.”

Despite Apple’s love of everything under 4-inches, other companies like Samsung, Huawei and Sony have opted to develop devices with large “phablet” displays.

The recently released Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a 5.7-inch display and the Samsung Galaxy Mega has a whopping 6.3-inch screen.

At 6.1-inches, the Huawei Ascend Mate comes in just below the Galaxy Mega, while the Sony Xperia Z Ultra beats them all at 6.4-inches.

White’s sources also gave hints as to how the Apple iWatch will function, suggesting that the device will behave as a “multi-purpose gateway” for controlling a connected home.

Tipped to launch sometime in 2014, the iWatch will be able to control lights, audio and video equipment as well as being an iPhone accessory.

Halfords releases Nextbase range of dash-cam car windscreen cameras

Nextbase 402G Professional

Nextbase 402G Professional

Halfords has announced a new line of dash-cams, with the Nextbase range set to give drivers the ability to reveal the truth behind car accidents.

Capturing the view through a car's windscreen in real-time, the recorders are able to capture events before, during and after any collision.

The footage can help drivers resolve insurance claims, proving the fraudulent behaviour of "crash for cash" scammers who deliberately cause accidents and lie about the number of passengers in their car.

The range of recording devices we now offer means that we can provide drivers with the means to produce evidence of how an incident occurred and who is at fault should the need arise," said Alec James, Halfords in-car technology manager.

“They represent great value for money, capture high-quality digital footage - which is essential for insurers - and offer a range of useful additional features to suit drivers’ needs.”

Halfords Nextbase camera features

Ensuring they are able to meet the needs of all manner of consumners, the retailer has revealed that there will be three cameras in Halfords Nextbase dash-cam range.

The Nextbase 202 Lite is the simplest option. With a 1.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 120-degree wide angle camera and built in microphone, it films AVI video while attached to the vehicle as well as 10 minutes of back-up footage when detached. It has a 6.85cm display with a 1280 x 720 pixel screen and supports up to 32GB SD card.

Next in the line is the the Nextbase 302G Deluxe, a device which plays host to the same array of features as the 202 Lite, with infra-red night vision thrown into the mix. Further additions include GPS logging to track location and a 3-Axis G-sensor to record impact direction and acceleration.

The priciest option, the Nextbase 402G Professional, has even more additional features, videoing much-clearer footage in MOV format. It has a 1920 x 1080 pixel screen and a HD light-sensitive chip with WDR (wide dynamic range) technology. It supports a 32GB Micro SD.

Halfords Nextbase prices and availability

The three Nextbase cameras hit Halfords stores today and range in price from £69.99 for the Nextbase 202 Lite to £99.99 for the Nextbase 302G Deluxe and £149.99 for the Nextbase 402G Professional.

Ofcom considering increasing 4G mobile operator license fees, could affect users

Ofcom has just published a consultation that outlines how 4G mobile operator licensing fees could increase in the future.

The UK’s office of communications could drastically raise the annual feeds for the 900MHz and 1800MHz 4G spectrum bands following a consultation.

After calculating the value of the spectrum based on the bids made during the 4G auction and the payments received for each, Ofcom is proposing that the annual licensing fees are increased to bring the costs more in line with the true value.

However, the proposed fees are radically different to those currently being paid by the four UK 4G network providers (or soon-to-be providers).

“Mobile network operators currently pay a combined total of £24.8 million per year for 900MHz spectrum and £39.7 million for 1800MHz spectrum,” reads the Ofcom proposal. “This [consultation] has produced revised proposed total fees payable by mobile network operators of £138.5 million per year for 900MHz spectrum and £170 million for 1800MHz spectrum.”

EE, the longest running UK 4G provider, currently pays a £24.9 million combined fee for the 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum. This could be raised to £107.1 million, a little over four times larger than the existing annual figure.

Vodafone could be paying £83.1 million next year, rather than its current £15.6 million payment and O2 could face the same payment jump for its 4G network licensing fees.

Hutchinson 3G, owner of Three, could see its £8.3 million annual figure rise to £35.7 million next year.

Daunting figures aside, the price hikes could affect consumers in that 4G tariffs could become a lot more expensive.

Networks could face increases to what they pay to run mobile voice calls, 3G and 4G services, which would also affect normal 3G network contract prices too.

Ofcom’s consultation period will end on December 19 and if the proposals are accepted, the new prices would come into effect next year.

Next, read why Three is the best choice for 4G despite starting late.

PS4 Pre-orders: Best deals and bundles available now

Despite day on PS4 pre-orders having already sold out, a raft of retailers are still giving you the chance to secure your PS3 follow-on ahead of the console's upcoming release.

With retailers suggesting that PS4 pre-order interest has been double that of the rival Xbox One, leading up to the recently confirmed November 29 PS4 release date there are a number of outlets all vying for your PS4 pre-order cash, and that means there is a good deal to be had.

Following the announcement that more than 1 million PS4 pre-orders have already been placed, Sony has confirmed that any PS4 pre-orders placed after August 6 will not be available on the console's day of release. If, however, you are still intent on snapping up the next-gen console ahead of launch, there are many offers still available to ensure you get the most for your money.

Making sure you are kept up to date on all the best and latest offers and PS4 prices, we will continue to update this article as new PS4 pre-order deals are made available and competition for your hard earned cash heightens as the console’s arrival nears.

Where can you buy the PS4? Read on to find out.

Amazon

Amazon is now offering PS4 pre-orders at the console’s E3 confirmed £349 price point. Although currently offering the console at its RRP, Amazon has promised those looking to secure the console ahead of launch, that it if lowers the price at any point, it will refund the difference.

“Order now and if the Amazon.co.uk price decreases between the time you place your order and the release date, you'll be charged the lowest price,” the company’s price guarantee statement reads.

Not deterred by the lack of day one stock, Amazon has stated: "Please note--due to high demand, orders placed for this PlayStation 4 console from August 6 may be received after release date. We will ship orders as soon as we receive sufficient inventory."

If looking to buy the PS4 as a present, perhaps a Christmas gift, Amazon offers gift wrapping on its PS4 pre-orders, a potentially handy addition.

PS4 Pre-orders: Amazon

GameStop

Not quite the biggest saving doing the rounds, online outlet GameStop is offering PS4 pre-orders at the marginally reduced price of £349.97, a grand saving of two pence.

Like many of its rivals GameStop is warning those after the console that PS4 pre-orders might no longer arrive by the unit's November 29 release date. The retailer's site states: "Preorders on PS4 after 7th August 2013 are not guaranteed for Launch Day. We have will more info soon."

Offering a bit more positivity, the company adds: "When you preorder the PS4, you are automatically upgraded to Express Shipping for free."

PS4 Pre-orders: GameStop

Toys R Us

Having offered the best PS4 pre-order discounts to let you pinch the pennies, Toys R Us has now closed its early offering of the next-gen console. Despite being out of day one pre-order stock, the retailer is still listing the PS4 price at a reduced £339.99, £10 cheaper that the console's RRP.

Since Sony's day one unavailability announcement, the retailer has closed its PS4 pre-orders stating simply "PS4 pre-orders sold out." That said, the continued low price suggests the toy store will offer this reduced price after launch too.

Offering a small glimmer of hope to those who have yet to secure their PS4 pre-order, the Toys R Us advanced order page is now letting wannabe owners to "Register to receive an email when available."

PS4 Pre-orders: Toys R Us

Game

Offering multiple PS4 pre-order options, high street retailer Game will let you secure a standalone PS4 console, or the next-gen device bundled with a couple of games. It has failed to acknowledge the lack of day one availability at present.

Although stating the PS4 price at the £349 RRP, Game only requires a £20 deposit for you to reserve your console ahead of launch. With the precise PS4 release date still up in the air, Game has listed the Xbox One rival alongside a “X-mas 2013” launch window.

Again only requiring a £20 deposit with the full balance to be paid ahead of launch, Game’s PS4 games bundle will see the PS3 follow-on hit your doorstep with a copy of Killzone Shadow Fall and Drive Club in tow. A finalised price for this game bundle has yet to be announced.

PS4 Pre-orders: Game

Zavvi

Undercutting its rivals, Zavvi is offering a marginally reduced PS4 price for those pre-ordering the console. And when we say marginal, we really do mean it.

Shaving a full five pence of the console’s price, Zavvi based PS4 pre-orders will see gamers pay ‘just’ £348.95. What’s more, unlike some retailers demanding full, upfront payment, the former high street presence has stated: “Payment will not be taken until dispatch.”

Again offing a price promise that could come in useful as competition between sellers increases and fees potentially tumble, Zavvi has revealed: “Order this product with us today and if we reduce the price between taking your order and the release date, we will charge you the lower price!”

Although still accepting PS4 pre-orders, the retailer now states on its website: "Orders place from 6th Aug may be received after release date."

PS4 Pre-orders: Zavvi

Asda

Suggesting that PS4 stock could be limited at launch and that pre-ordering might be the way to go, supermarket chain Asda is allowing customers to pre-order just one of Sony’s devices each. Again notifying customers about the lack of day one stock, the Asda pre-order site reads: "Orders placed on or after the 5th August are not guaranteed for Day 1 delivery."

Letting you secure the gaming and entertainment hub for just £20, the retailer will not pressure you into paying the full price until the console is ready to be shipped.

Offering a variety of pre-order opportunities, Asda has confirmed that eager gamers will be able to secure their PS4 either online or in store.

PS4 Pre-orders: Asda

ShopTo

The PS4 has topped the company’s pre-orders list repeatedly since its unveiling and ShopTo has no plans to halt its pre-orders even though day one stock might not be available.

A statement on the ShopTo PS4 pre-order pages now reads: “Please note that Sony have confirmed all PlayStation 4 pre-orders placed from August 6 will now not be guaranteed for launch. You can still pre-order PS4 with us in case we receive cancellations and can fulfil your order for launch.”

Another retailer to offer the PS4 with a microscopic discount, pre-ordering the console from ShopTo will save you a full two pence off the retail price. PS4 pre-orders through this online retailer will set you back £348.98. What's more, the company will let you change your mind at any time between ordering the next-gen Sony console and the device being shipped to your door. ShopTo has stated: “You will not be charged until the item is dispatched. You may cancel the pre-order any time before dispatch.”

PS4 Pre-orders: ShopTo

While a number of other retailers had previously offered PS4 pre-orders, many have now stopped accepting advanced purchases for the eagerly awaited console. While Sony itself is no longer accepting PS4 pre-orders, both Tesco Sainsbury's have also close their PS4 pages.

More to Follow: We will continue to update this post with all the latest PS4 pre-order deals as they emerge.

Windows Phone 8.1 coming to tablets too?

Nokia Lumia 1020

The Nokia Lumia 1020 runs Windows Phone 8

Windows Phone 8.1 is expected to launch for tablets as well as smartphones when it becomes available early next year.

Although Windows tablets currently run Windows RT or Windows 8, it seems Microsoft will introduce 7- to 10-inch screen compatibility with Windows Phone 8.1.

Microsoft will be making Windows Phone 8.1 support larger screens than the 5- to 6-inch varieties that will be compatible after the Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update.

It is unsure what will happen when both Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1 are available for tablets with screen sizes between 7- and 10-inches.

However, Microsoft is trying to merge its Windows systems across desktops, smartphones and tablets so developers can easily make one app that works across all devices, so Windows Phone 8.1 could be a step towards that.

Alongside the long-awaited Notification Centre for WP devices, Windows Phone 8.1 should also bring with it a number of other new features.

According to the Supersite for Windows sources, Microsoft will be removing the Back button from the Windows Phone hardware. Users apparently tend to hit the Start button rather than the back button to open an app, just as they would on an iPhone, so it makes more sense for it to be removed.

Windows Phone 8.1 will also apparently aim for Full 1080p HD resolution support along with the larger screen compatibility.

Improving multitasking is also a priority with Windows Phone 8.1 says the source. Microsoft has flagged it as Windows Phone’s “biggest technical issue”, and will seemingly fix major issues with notifications and background processes.

Until Windows Phone 8.1 is released in 2014, the Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update may well be unveiled alongside the Nokie Lumia 1520 at the Nokia World event on October 22.

HTC One Max specs tipped to include 5.9-inch screen and 1.7GHz quad-core CPU

The HTC One Max specs sheet has made another premature appearance, with the upcoming, oversized smartphone tipped to play host to a 1.7GHz quad-core processor.

With the HTC One follow-on and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rival expected to be officially unveiled later this month, newly emerged HTC One Max specs have pointed to the high-end smartphone sporting the same 1.7GHz quad-core CPU as its predecessor, just wrapped up alongside a new 5.9-inch display.

Although the HTC One Max is currently far from official, it has been the subject of numerous leaks in recent weeks and months, with the latest premature specs unveiling offering insight to all of the phone’s claimed internal offerings.

According to the leaked HTC One Max specs which have surfaced courtesy of French site, NoWhereElse, the handset is seemingly set to partner its 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm CPU with 2GB of RAM and Google’s Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS.

What more, bringing a new edge to the phone, the HTC One Max will reportedly become the first handset to run the latest, and much mooted, edition of the company’s popular user interface – HTC Sense 5.5.

Aside from the near 6-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel Full HD LCD display, the HTC One Max specs sheet sticks largely to that of the original One, with Beat Audio further assisting the integrated BoomSound stereo speakers, and the usual array of Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, NFC and 4G connectivity options making the cut.

With 32GB of internal storage also listed alongside a 3200mAh Lithium-Ion battery, the phone, which will line up at 10.6mm thick and 130g in weight, will also host a 4-Ultrapixel rear-mounted camera.

In a similar vein to the recently released iPhone 5S, the HTC One Max’s party piece has long been tipped to be an integrated fingerprint scanner, with a number of claimed specs and leaked images having all but confirmed that biometric security measure’s inclusion.

iPad 5 leaks show off new iPhone 5S inspired Space Grey finish

New iPad 5 leaks have surfaced, with the latest images of the upcoming tablet showing a device with an iPhone 5S inspired Space Grey finish.

With the iPad 5 release date widely expected to be officially announced at a dedicated launch event on October 22, the latest iPad 5 leaks have offered an early insight into what the next-generation Apple tablet could look like.

Widely expected to be coming in for something of a large scale redesign, the newly leaked iPad 5 pictures, which have surfaced courtesy of serial Apple tipster Sonny Dickson, have shown the upcoming device alongside an existing iPad 4.

As well as highlighting the colour change from the standard silver to the new iPhone 5S introduced ‘Space Grey’ finish, the new iPad 5 leaks have again hinted that the eagerly awaited tablet will sport a thinner, narrower bezelled design, similar to that of the iPad mini.

With the new leaks showing a tablet with a Space Grey metallic finish on both the rear and face of the device, the images match with claimed iPad 5 designs which have surfaced in recent weeks.

“We’ve gotten our hands on a number of sharp high-res images of the Space Grey 5th-gen iPad casing and front panel,” the tipsters proudly state. “Notably, it shows off the highly anticipated slimmer iPad-mini like design it is expected to launch with.”

Although the iPad 5 is expected to play host to the same 9.7-inch Retina display as its predecessor, recent iPad 5 rumours have pointed to the tablet’s overall form factor slimming down from 18.5cm wide to a more one-hand manageable 17cm wide. This narrowing is set to be made possible by the introduction of a heavily reduced bezel.

Further iPad 5 specs to have been mooted ahead of launch are the potential inclusion of the iPhone 5S introduced 64-bit A7 processor, improved camera optics and, of course, the latest iOS 7 operating system.

Although believed to be heading to launch later this year, the iPad 5 does not look set to have the limelight all to itself. Also believed to be heading for an October 22 unveiling is the much mooted iPad mini 2, a device expected to add a Retina display to its considerable bag of tricks.
