Nikon suggests smartphones are helping boost camera market

Smartphones vs cameras

The smartphone vs cameras battle continues

Camera giant Nikon has suggested that smartphones are helping to enhance the dedicated camera market, not hindering it as previously thought.

Despite many consumers now relying on their camera equipped handsets as their primary imaging device, Nikon has claimed that, although having an adverse effect on entry-level compacts, smartphones are actually helping boosted the wider camera market.

“The leap in consumers’ camera upgrades has become much bigger,” Zurab Kiknadaze, Nikon’s European Product Manager said discussing the impact of smartphones on the camera scene.

He added: “While in the past we were seeing people make more gradual upgrades, now people make bigger leaps. It’s now not surprising for smartphone users to go from their smartphone cameras to more premium ones.”

Although looking at the lighter effects smartphones are having on the camera market, Kiknadaze has also addressed the negative side of things.

“We are not going to lie and say smartphones are not affecting us, it does,” he said speaking with TrustedReviews. “However, from a top line when people say smartphones are killing cameras, it’s not true. It’s only affecting certain cameras.

“Even with compact cameras, smartphones are still only affecting a group of these, and that’s the really cheap, most affordable compacts. If you look at the total picture, there is growth in more advanced cameras.

We haven’t seen any effect yet on DSLRs and I think it will be a long time and some miracles for smartphones to start troubling DSLRs.”

He added: “Smartphones are also subsequently raising the average sale price of cameras, which for manufacturers is typically good news. This tells us that we need to shift focus slightly, or diversify just a little bit better.”

Kiknadaze’s comments were echoed by Greg Morrison, Nikon’s European Communications Manager.

He stated: “The attitude that Nikon has taken over the past two or three years, as we’ve seen smartphones increasing in usage and improving in picture quality, is that people taking pictures is a good think. We like people being passionate about photography.

“It means there is a whole new market for us that we can introduce to our bridge cameras and our Wi-Fi enabled cameras and to entry-level DSLRs.”

Samsung: 4K TVs are already a viable option

Samsung has suggested that 4K TVs are already a consumer viable option, despite the next-gen televisions coming with hugely inflated price tags and a limited array of 4K content.

With the first UHD TVs having launched late last year, Samsung has claimed that the market has already developed enough for 4K TVs to be considered a viable consumer choice.

"2013 has already made 4K a viable option,” Dilen Thakrar, Samsung’s Senior TV Product Manager, said speaking with TrustedReviews.

Discussing last year’s introduction to the 4K space Thakrar stated: “We launched a range of UHD in 2013 and the uptake on those TVs has been really competitive for us. We’ve had a really good year of UHD already.”

He added: “What 2013 let us do was introduce the concept of UHD to consumers, so they can understand more about what UHD is. We’re finding more and more consumers walking into stores asking for UHD TV screens.”

Despite Thakrar’s insistence that UHD TVs are now a viable option, the £3,000 price tag that accompanies the company’s 55-inch 4K TV is sure to price most out of the market. The 65-inch Samsung 4K TV costs a staggering £4,299.

Although stating that 4K TVs are already a viable option, the Samsung TV head has suggested that the industry will see considerable further growth during the coming 12 months.

“I think what you will see from the range of UHD screens we will launch in 2014 is that UHD will be made accessible to more and more people,” Thakrar said.

“You will start seeing more content available and you will start seeing online streaming of UHD content, and there will be other solutions available as well.”

Thakrar’s comments clash with those made by retailer John Lewis which claim that it will be a further two years before 4K TVs are a viable option for the masses.

Speaking with TrustedReviews, John Kempner, a lead TV Buyer with the retailer stated: “Over the next two years 4K TVs will become an affordable option.”

He added: “That’s based on how fast the price has dropped since we first went into HD.”

Samsung

Samsung Galaxy S5 tipped for March launch

Contrary to recent reports, the Samsung Galaxy S5 release date will not be held on February 23 as new Tizen devices are tipped for unveiling.

While in recent weeks it has been suggested that Samsung will unveil its new flagship phone during a pre-MWC 2014 conference, new reports out of the company’s native Korea have now claimed that the eagerly awaited handset will now not touch down until mid-March.

According to reports from the Korean arm of ZDNet, Samsung has started issuing invites to its February 23 press conference, with its first Tizen OS powered set to be the main focus of the day.

“Please join the Tizen Association Board on Sunday, 23 February 2014 for a welcome reception and kick-off to MWC 2014,” the Samsung issued invite is reported to read.

“During this invite only event, you will get an exclusive sneak preview of the newest Tizen devices as well as an opportunity to learn about the major milestones that the Tizen project has hit since last year’s event.”

While the Samsung Galaxy S5 release date is now not expected for a further few weeks, a raft of Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours have already started doing the rounds.

With a 5.2-inch display tipped for inclusion alongside a 2K resolution, it has been suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will sport an all new design, Android 4.4 KitKat innards and a speedy Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor.

Red Google Nexus 5 leaks ahead of upcoming release

Images of a red Google Nexus 5 have leaked online ahead of the vibrantly hued handset’s expected release in the coming weeks.

Seemingly set to build on the standard black and white Google Nexus 5 handsets already available, the new red hued option has appeared in Vietnam just days after it was suggested the flagship phone would be made available in a new range of colours.

According to the latest leaks, the red Google Nexus 5 will be officially launched in late February or early March, with the device to land alongside a yellow toned offering.

Although Google has yet to officially comment on any upcoming release of colourful Google Nexus 5 handsets, reports earlier this week suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5S rival will be made available in a total of eight colours.

As well as the aforementioned hues, the Google Nexus 5 will also reportedly be launched in orange, green, blue and purple shades.

Apart the change in colour, the new Google Nexus 5 handsets are not expected to differ in any way from the original models.

Boasting a 5-inch, 1080p Full HD display alongside Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, the Google Nexus 5 sports a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM and the option of 16GB or 32GB of internal storage.

The Last of Us Left Behind is first and last single-player DLC

Naughty Dog has confirmed that Left Behind will be the first and last single-player The Last of Us DLC.

According to developer Naughty Dog, after Left Behind arrives on February 14 there will only be multiplayer DLC released.

The full cinematic trailer for the Left Behind DLC was posted on the official PlayStation Blog earlier this week.

Replying to some of the gamers’ questions on the blog post, Naughty Dog Community Strategist Eric Monacelli confirmed its only multiplayer DLC in the future.

“There’s multiplayer DLC up next. We don’t have any more single player DLC planned”, said Monacelli.

That means you’ll need to make Left Behind last, as it’ll be the last single-player The Last of Us you’ll ever play (unless they release a sequel of course).

Monacelli does say that Left Behind is a “good length” depending on your gaming ability and the difficultly level and it also features new music recorded specifically for the DLC.

Left behind serves as a prequel to The Last of Us’s main storyline and aims to offer some background on Ellie and Riley’s relationship.

The DLC will have a slightly different tone to the main game’s campaign, and will feature a variety of gameplay styles.

“It’s definitely a bit different. It’s a little bit more ‘fun’, because you have two teenage girls going through a mall,” said Ashley Johnson, who is the voice of Ellie. “It’s kind of like a post-pandemic version of two teenage girls hanging out.”

Apple: Touchscreen Mac would be “a waste of energy”

Apple has said making a touchscreen Mac would be a “waste of energy” and would make for a bad user experience.

It seems Apple has no intention of going all Windows 8 for Mac users in the future, saying adding a touchscreen is a “non-goal”.

Despite the slowing PC sales following the introduction of tablets and smartphones, Apple says the Mac is doing better than ever. The Mac actually celebrated its 30th birthday this week.

“The thing that has turbocharged the Mac has been the advent of the iPhone and the iPad,” said Bud Tribble, Apple’s Vice President of Software Technology. “That cross-pollination of ideas, the fact that the [Mac and iOS] teams are the same team, has propelled the Mac further than I had hoped for.”

Recent rumours, and patent filings we might add, have suggested Apple is considering introducing touchscreens to the Mac range. However, during the MacWorld interview, Apple execs have said it isn’t true.

“It’s obvious and easy enough to slap a touchscreen on a piece of hardware, but is that a good experience? We believe no”, said Craig Federighi, Apple’s Head of Software.

“We don’t waste time thinking, ‘but should it be one [interface]! How do you make these [operating systems] merge together?’ What a waste of energy that would be,” said Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple.

Apple has also said there is no plan to merge iOS and OS X into one integrated operating system in the future.

“To say [OS X and iOS] should be the same, independent of their purpose? Let’s just converge, for the sake of convergence? [It’s] absolutely a non-goal”, added Federighi.

“You don’t want to say the Mac became less good at being a Mac because someone tried to turn it into iOS. At the same time, you don’t want to feel like iOS was designed by [one] company and Mac was designed by [a different] company, and they’re different for reasons of lack of common vision.”

Microsoft aims to create a OS experience that is the same across all products, regardless of screen size of usage, but Apple is determined to keep things separate. Every product has its strengths and sometimes the right tools for the job are a trackpad and keyboard.

“We have a common sense of aesthetics, a common set of principles that drive us, and we’re building the best products we can for their unique purposes. So you’ll see them be the same where that makes sense, and you’ll see them be different in those things that are critical to their essence”, said Federighi.

Xbox One digital games pricing readjustment “on the agenda”

Microsoft has confirmed competitive Xbox One digital games pricing is “on the agenda”.

Apparently, Microsoft is already planning to readjust the prices of Xbox One digital titles available in the Xbox Live store.

Larry Hyrb, Director of Programming for Xbox Live and better known as Major Nelson, has spoken out on a Reddit thread dedicated to the discussion of Xbox One digital downloads.

Among the many things being asked for by the Xbox One gamers is the ability to pre-order and pre-load digital titles and to be able to buy digital game codes in high street retail outlets.

Gamers are also wondering if and when the Xbox Live Games on Gold service will extend to Xbox One titles in the future.

“We are way aware if this and many of the concerns of the community,” said Hyrb. “We have some great stuff planned for Xbox One this year (and beyond). As soon as we can share some of the goodness… we will :)”

One such commenter suggested that Microsoft’s plans should include reassessing the pricing of its digital games library for the next-gen console:

“I hope [the great stuff] includes competitive pricing for digital downloads, because it does feel like we are being punished for downloading digitally.”

Hyrb then confirmed that: “It is indeed on the agenda”.

Microsoft was heavily criticised for raising the price of key Xbox One exclusives from £44.99 to £49.99 in December. This included games like Ryse: Son of Rome , Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3.

Digital games on both the PS4 and Xbox One are considerably more expensive than their physical copy counterparts, even for cross-platform titles.

It seems bizarre that Microsoft and Sony would charge more for digital titles when they actually cost less to make, and have been ranting on about the digital future since both consoles were announced.

Samsung: Glasses-free 3D ‘not currently necessary’

Samsung has suggested that glasses-free 3D TVs are not currently necessary, claiming consumers are still more than happy to wear extra dimensional specs.

Despite having showcased its own glasses-free 3D TV concept at CES 2014 earlier this month, Samsung has stated that although it believes more consumers would adopt 3D if there was no need to wear special glasses, at present the technology is ‘not necessary’.

“Glasses are one of the areas that consumers may feel they would rather not have with the 3D experience, but consumers do like the 3D experience in its entirety,” Dilen Thakrar, Samsung’s Senior Product Manager for TV said speaking with TrustedReviews.

He added: “Possibly glasses-free could increase interest in 3D further, but I don’t think it’s necessary today.

While removing the need for 3D glasses would make the home 3D experience more accessible to a wider audience, Thakrar has claimed that current 3D TV usage indicates the need for eyewear is not slowing the adoption of the technology.

“Maybe glasses-free is one area where 3D could increase its interest, but we are already seeing that consumers do like to watch particular programmes or events in 3D,” he said.

“You’ve also already got broadcasters out there broadcasting in 3D so we know that there are consumers out there that like the 3D experience as it currently is.”

Although having demoed the technology, Thakrar has suggested that Samsung’s glasses-free 3D TV concept will not become a consumer available product anytime soon.

He stated: “Whenever we are at a stage where we believe the glasses-free 3D technology is right for consumers, and gives an experience that they expect from Samsung, we would be ready to launch it but I couldn’t put a timeframe on that yet.”

Nikon hints future cameras will add 4K video recording

Nikon has stated that it is aware of the need for 4K video recording on its cameras, hinting that the Ultra HD options could feature on future DSLR offerings.

Speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews recently, representatives from the high-profile camera specialist revealed that consumer interest was driving its approach to 4K video recording on future devices, with high levels of interest reported.

We are aware of the need for, and request for, 4K video recording,” Zurab Kiknadaze, a European Product Manager with Nikon told us.

Discussing the company’s future 4K plans, he added: “It is a bit tricky, it’s not something that we are purposefully excluding from our cameras; however we need to approach it carefully.

“There are high-end cameras that produce this but it just puts such a load on the equipment.”

Hinting that future Nikon DSLRs could play host to 4K video recording capabilities, a feature not yet present on any of the company’s cameras, Kiknadaze stated: “For us, because consumers are demanding it we are aware of this and will be looking into it for the future.”

While Nikon has to date avoided adding 4K options to its leading camera lines, earlier this month rival Sony unveiled a dedicated 4K handycam video recorder, a device that will set you back a smidge under £2,000.

Apple celebrates 30 years of Mac with retrospective video

Apple has released a special video to celebrate 30 years of Mac and highlight how well received they have been.

The Cupertino company isn’t exactly one to blow its own trumpet, but with such a huge anniversary, it’s difficult not to let a bit of nostalgia creep in.

“Thirty years ago, the Mac put the power of technology in everyone’s hands, launching a generation of innovators who continue to change the world. This video celebrates some of those pioneers and the incredible impact they’ve made”, reads the video blurb.

The first Macintosh computer, literally called The Macintosh, was first launch by Steve Jobs on January 24, 1984.

It took centre stage of the now obsolete MacWorld expo, when Jobs pulled the cloth on the (then rather) small computer, mouse and 3.5-inch floppy disc drive.

Apple’s approach was considered to be a complete revelation in comparison to the Microsoft Windows approach and still is today.

The Ameican manufacturer enlisted the help of celebrity faces to show the versatility, power and capabilities of the Mac range, including the 13-inch MacBook Air 2014 and the brand new cylindrical Mac Pro.

Musicians Moby andHans Zimmer are all part of Apple’s fan club, as is designer April Greiman, who is well known for being one of the first to embrace computers as a design tool. Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield and British fashion photographer Nick Knight are also featured in the celebratory video.

Qualcomm predicts 4K phones are the next big thing

Qualcomm 4K phones

Qualcomm suggests 4K phones are the future

Chipset manufacturer Qualcomm has suggested that 4K phones will be the industry’s next big area of progression, a move that is closer than you might expect.

With handsets having progressed through having 720p HD and 1080p Full HD displays in less than 18 months, Qualcomm has predicted that it won’t be long until 4K phones are the dominant force of the high-end mobile scene.

I think 4K is one of the primary things you are seeing from us,” Tim McDonough, Qualcomm’s Vice President of Marketing said speaking with TrustedReviews on the future of smartphones.

“4K is pretty cool because it means that not only can you do 4K video, but once you can push that number of pixels and the chip has the ability to do 4K video, anything that is multimedia related – think about gaming – that gets better too.”

With chipsets set to be at the heart of the introduction of true 4K phones, McDonough has teased that the first 4K handsets might not be too far off, despite 4K TVs still being in their infancy.

“In November we announced Snapdragon 805, the next-generation of 800. Our shorthand for that is that it is the Ultra HD mobile processor and it runs Ultra HD. It will shoot it with video, it will play it back, it will play it back with surround sound and it will run an Ultra HD UI,” he said.

“It has already sampled and we said the first half of 2014 [for devices to launch].”

Detailing the move to 4K he added: “When you think of how many pixels it is running on screen, it is an incredibly competent processor. If you can put Ultra HD in a phone, you can basically put it in anything as this is the most challenging environment to design a chip for.”

While recent Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours have claimed the phone will land with a 2K resolution display in tow, last year the Korean manufacturer bestowed its latest phablet with the ability to shoot 4K video.

Discussing this breakthrough moment towards truly 4K phones, McDonough stated: “The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 today has a Snapdragon in it and shoots in 4K because of that Snapdragon. That is the first toe in the water and I think you will see a lot more of it.”

Highlighting the rapid progression the smartphone industry has made to 4K, the Qualcomm VP added: “As soon as you think it is going to slow down, you are generally proven wrong.

“I once said that ‘now we’ve got 720p on our smartphone screens isn’t that good enough?’ I was so wrong. 720p was the standard for what, six, nine months.

“If they can do 4K you kind of get to the point where it is ‘what can’t they do’. What I think will be interesting is will your phone go from 4K to 8K.”

Panasonic TX-L47DT65 TV Review

What is the Panasonic TX-L47DT65?

The Panasonic L47DT65 is a 47-inch TV from the second rung of Panasonic’s full HD LCD range. Its headline features are 1600Hz BLS motion handling, local dimming over six separate LED blocks, passive 3D playback and Panasonic’s My Home Screen Smart TV interface.

Panasonic TX-L47DT65: Design and Features

The Panasonic L47DT65 is quite a looker. In place of the old black or dark grey chunky blandness that used to characterise Panasonic TVs you now get an exceptionally slim silver, reflective metallic frame that makes the L47DT65 one of the most space saving and attractive TVs of this generation.

Panasonic L47DT65

The spectacularly slim frame also means you can get more immersed in the picture – a trick that can prove especially useful when you’re watching 3D.

Connectivity is OK. Where multimedia is concerned there are DLNA and integrated Wi-Fi network options, plus both USB and – in what’s still a quite rare move in the TV world – SD card slots for both playback of multimedia files and timeshifting from the TV’s integrated Freesat HD and Freeview HD tuners.

There are only three HDMIs, though, when a TV at the L47DT65’s level really should have four in our opinion.

The Panasonic L47DT65’s screen is, of course, a full HD affair, and as you would expect from such a slim-framed model its images are lit by an edge LED lighting system. The set is able to control six ‘zones’ of this LED lighting system individually, to deliver a degree of local dimming, and it is driven by a 1600Hz BLS motion system, which uses a combination of a native 100Hz panel, backlight scanning and frame interpolation to deliver a supposed 1600Hz-like effect.

While this sounds impressive, it’s worth pointing out that Panasonic’s WT65 flagship HD series delivers 3600Hz BLS motion handling. But then it’s also worth remembering that to some extent this sort of stuff is just a numbers game. Certainly we’ll be approaching the L47DT65’s motion reproduction with an open mind rather than going in with the expectation that its ‘1600Hz’ claims must by default make it a superior motion performer.

Panasonic L47DT65

The Panasonic L47DT65 is also decently specified with Smart features. Its network connections can be used to stream material from DLNA-enabled sources, or for accessing Panasonic’s Viera Connect online content platform. We’ve covered Viera Connect in depth in a previous review, but briefly we’ll sum it up again here as being decent rather than brilliant. There’s a pretty wide range of content, including a mix of games, information apps and video streaming services including Netflix, the BBC iPlayer and BBC News and Sports feeds. However, there’s no ITV Player, 4OD, Demand 5 or LoveFilm, which add up to a significant catch up/on demand video shortfall versus some rival smart TV platforms – especially Samsung’s.

One are where Panasonic is strong, though, is with the support it offers for external smart (Android and iOS) devices via the Panasonic TV Remote 2 app. Features here include file and screen sharing between devices, and even the ability to view stuff showing on the TV’s tuners on your tablet or phone in another room.

The L47DT65’s relatively elevated position in Panasonic’s current TV range also means it has plenty of picture adjustments to keep you busy. In fact, the set is endorsed by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) as a model it can professionally calibrate to optimise its performance to suit your room - if you’re willing to pay for such a service, of course.

Among the key setup tools on offer are a colour management system, gamma controls and white balance fine tuning – as well as a series of processing-based systems targeted at reducing noise, fighting motion judder/blur and boosting contrast performance. We’ll look at these tools in the Set Up and Performance sections.

Panasonic TX-L47DT65: Set Up

Initial set up on the Panasonic L47DT65 is impressively easy to achieve, thanks to a menu system that holds your hand admirably tightly the first time you fire the TV up.

Panasonic L47DT65

The My Home Screen system, meanwhile, makes setting up different home screens for different members of your family exceptionally easy, thanks to a series of pre-determined templates and a simple ‘select and place’ system for choosing your preferred apps.

The main picture and sound calibration menus are rather less attractively presented, and are a little confusing in places. For instance, you need to activate the Expert menu before you can access the TV’s most in-depth calibration tools.

Some of the features in the picture set up menus need to be treated sparingly too. For instance, the noise reduction tools are a no-no with HD sources, as they leave the picture looking soft and processed. The Intelligent Frame Creation system isn’t always helpful either, as while it does reduce judder it can also cause a few flickery and smeary artefacts over and around very fast moving objects.

The trickiest part of the Panasonic L47DT65’s set up to get right, though, are the features that relate to its contrast performance – though the best place to explain this is in the next section of the review…

Xbox One shipments top 3.9 million in 2013

Microsoft has announced a total of 3.9 million Xbox One consoles were shipped before December 31 2013.

During the first month (and a bit) after the Xbox One release date on November 22, Microsoft shipped 3.9 million units to retail.

Overall, over 7.4 million Xbox hardware units – including Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles – were sold during Q4 2013, which includes the crucial Christmas period.

In early January, Microsoft announced Xbox One sales worldwide had topped 3 million by the end of 2013, with 1 million sold in the first 24 hours alone.

Microsoft’s financial results saw the company report “record” revenues of $24.52 billion (£14.74 billion), up from $21.46 billion (£12.91 billion) for the same period in 2012.

“Our Commercial segment continues to outpace the overall market, and our Devices and Consumer segment had a great holiday quarter,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

“The investments we are making in devices and services that deliver high-value experiences to our customers, and the work we are doing with our partners, are driving strong results and positioning us well for long-term growth.”

The Devices and Consumer Hardware division includes Xbox and saw significant growth for the year, earning $4.7 billion (£2.8 billion) in revenue.

“We delivered record revenue as demand for our business offerings remains high and we made strong progress in our Devices and Consumer segment,” added Amy Hood, Microsoft CFO. “These revenues reflect our focus on execution, cost discipline, and long-term shareholder value as we continue to drive the strategic transformation of the company.”

Samsung profits drop for first time in two years, tablet and phone demand still strong

Samsung’s Q4 2013 financial report reveals a profit loss for the first time in two years, despite strong demand for its smartphones and tablets.

The detail Q4 2013 report show an operating profit decline for the quarter, the first reported by the company in two years, which could be of concern to investors.

Of course, 8.3 trillion won (£4.7 billion) operating profit is still huge, and is only slightly lower than the 8.84 trillion won (£4.98 billion) figure posted for the same period the year before.

“Earnings will remain stagnant this year as the explosive growth of the past two to three years seems to have ended,” said Lee Sun Tae, a Korean-based analyst at NH Investment and Securities. “Although the lower-end smartphone market will continue to grow, the scale of profit from that segment doesn’t compare to the high-end market so the growth seems limited.”

However, it could suggest growth is slowing in Samsung’s smartphone and tablet business.

Samsung has been celebrating its mobile division though, saying tablet sales doubled from last year and people are more interested in their product range than ever before.

Apparently, this decline in operating profit is due to a £448 million one-off payment to employees to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the company’s “New Management Initiative”. Plus a stronger Korean won meant the company lost out on 700 billion won (£389 million).

“Samsung’s two major challenges for 2014 are to maintain its mobile-phone leadership in China and the US, while simultaneously growing its tablet business quickly enough to knock Apple iPad from its perch,” said Neil Mawston, an executive director at Strategy Analytics. “A flood of Asian rivals from China and India, such as Lenovo, as well as a product refresh from Apple, are pressuring Samsung.”

Nokia Android phone rumoured to be called Nokia X at launch

Nokia X smartphone range

Is this the Nokia X smartphone range?

The Nokia Android “Normandy” phone is rumoured to be called the Nokia X at launch.

According to notorious tipster @evleaks, the first Nokia Android phone will come to market named the Nokia X.

Currently, rumours suggest it is in development under the codename, Normandy, and could launch as soon as MWC 2014 in February.

"Project Normandy = Nokia X", read the brief @evleaks tweet.

However, it could well be unveiled after Microsoft’s purchase of Nokia mobile division is complete some time in Q1 2014.

We’ve heard a lot about the Nokia X in recent weeks, including seeing several leaked press shots of the colourful range of Android phones.

From what we’ve seen so far, the Nokia X will look a lot like the Nokia Lumia range and offer a heavily customised Android UI with strong Windows Phone influences.

However, it will benefit from Android features like a notifications centre and access to the wealth of apps on the Google Play Store.

The recent leaks also tip that Nokia may use a single capacitive touch back key underneath the screen with the Nokia X, rather than the three used in the Lumia range.

Preliminary specs for the Nokia X appeared in some AnTuTu benchmarks earlier this month, suggesting the device will run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor of unknown model and clock speed.

Running on Android 4.4 KitKat, the Nokia X will also reportedly feature a 5-megapixel rear camera.

That’s all we know about the hardware within the Nokia X, but we’ve seen a fair few screengrabs of the heavily Windows Phone influenced Nokia Android UI.

The design features bright, colourful blocks and we expect it will be just as heavy as the OS used in Amazon devices like the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7.

Samsung: Connected appliances are ‘a natural progression’

Samsung connected appliances

Samsung's connected appliances are coming

Samsung has claimed that connected appliances are ‘a natural progression’ of the sector, despite suggesting that it will take some time for UK consumers to adopt the technologies.

With much talk continuing to circulate around connected appliances, such as internet-connected fridges, washing machines and vacuum cleaners, Samsung has claimed that as consumers become increasingly familiar with Wi-Fi enabled devices, it is only natural that appliances are thrown into the mix.

“Because Wi-Fi connectivity is on more and more devices, and people are becoming more and more comfortable with it, then the concept of bringing it all together in appliances is just a natural progression," Russell Owens, Samsung’s Head of Digital Appliances said speaking with TrustedReviews.

Despite labelling the move ‘a natural progression’, Owens has hinted that it could still be some time before the average British kitchen and laundry room is fully connected.

“It’s still very much at the concept stage at the moment,” he told us. “It’s the sort of thing that will typically be brought out in the US and Korea first - probably this year.”

He added: “It’s just the start of that now. It will take a little bit more time to come over to Europe and the UK market.

“We’ve already got Wi-Fi connected devices in refrigeration and laundry that we sell in the US and Korea. We’ve just started launching Wi-Fi capable washing machines in the UK now which you can control with your phone.”

Discussing the benefits of the futuristic, connected appliances, the Samsung head stated: “If you’re out and you want to delay the cycle of your washing machine or turn it on just as you’re going home you can do so.”

Do you crave connected appliances or are you happy with the traditional means of starting a cleaning cycle? Let us know via the comment boxes below.

New Apple TV with gaming support potentially set for early 2014

Apple TV

Gaming on the current Apple TV

Apple will reportedly launch a new model of the Apple TV set top box some time in the first half of 2014, and it could come with proper gaming features.

The current generation (which is the third) of the Apple TV was launched in March 2012, with a minor revision in January of last year. With a typical two to three year gap in between generations, it’s certainly approaching time for a new model.

According to 9to5mac, that time is close at hand. It claims that the fourth generation Apple TV is "well into testing."

Those looking forward to Apple’s long-rumoured TV set can put their expectations on hold for another year at least, as the this new Apple TV will continue with the compact set-top-box format.

The major advancement this time around will relate to Apple TV’s software. The new device will apparently run on a revamped iOS-based operating system.

This latest report also supports recent claims that the new Apple TV will support new types of content, which is likely to mean games. It believes that an Apple TV-specific App Store or Game Store could be in the works, potentially turning it into an affordable games console.

Indeed, iLounge earlier carried a report that the current Apple TV device would receive a software update to enable "proper game support" some time before the end of March. It’s claimed that manufacturers are already working on bluetooth game controllers for the project.

As pictured above, the current Apple TV merely supports AirPlay gaming, which allows you to stream iPhone and iPad games to your TV. The concept of a dedicated Apple console should be giving Nintendo and co. sleepless nights.

Yoshi’s New Island UK release date confirmed

Nintendo has confirmed Yoshi’s New Island will arrive in the UK on March 14.

Europeans will be able to play Yoshi’s New Island on the same day as the Americans, as Nintendo confirms a simultaneous release date for the US and Europe.

The upcoming platform was originally scheduled for a loose spring release date in the UK, but now Nintendo has revealed it won’t stagger the Yoshi’s New Island release date.

Posting the release date announcement on Twitter, the Japanese gaming giant also released the first official picture of the game’s box art with cute hand drawn graphics.

The box art obviously takes strong inspiration from the game as Nintendo says Yoshi’s New Island features a variety of art styles including watercolours, crayon and oil paints.

“You’ll be able to explore the enchanting world of Yoshi’s New Island on Nintendo #3DS on 14th March!” read the Nintendo tweet.

Yoshi’s New Island is a sequel to the SNES classic title, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island and is actually being produced by Takashi Tezuka who served as creative director for the 1995 SNES original.

The Nintendo 3DS game will retain some of the series’ key mechanics including Yoshi’s distinctive flutter jump, egg throw and ground-pound.

However, the title will introduce new ones to make use of 3DS features like the gyroscope.

Some of these new features include the Mega Eggs seen in the teaser trailer below that can be used to destroy objects, reveal hidden doors and obtain coins.

This Mega Eggs can be controlled using the 3DS’ gyro sensor, while the game’s binocular ability lets you uncover secret areas with the eggs.

Nokia announces 8.2 million Lumia sales for Q4

Nokia has revealed it sold over 8.2 million Lumia devices during Q4 2013.

As Nokia prepares to become a part of Microsoft’s empire, the Finnish smartphone manufacturer reveals it saw a slight dip in sales for the last quarter of 2013.

For Q4 2013, which includes the Christmas period, Nokia sold 8.2 million Lumia devices down from 8.8 million the previous quarter.

Nokia is blaming the competitive smartphone market and a rapidly expanding army of budget rival devices running Android on its falling sales figures.

“The fourth quarter of 2013 was a watershed moment in Nokia’s history”, said Risto Siilasmaa, Nokia Chairman and interim CEO. “Having received overwhelmingly strong support from our shareholders at our extraordinary general meeting in November for the sale of our phones business to Microsoft, we are diligently working towards defining Nokia’s future direction.”

From the financial figures released for the quarter, Nokia’s mobile division lost around €198 million (£162 million).

This means Microsoft has a lot of work to do if it wants to prove Windows Phone 8 is a success.

In the latter half of last year Nokia launched its first tablet, the 10-inch Nokia Lumia 2520 and the 6-inch “phablet” Nokia Lumia 1520 . It also unveiled its camera-centric 2013 flagship, the Nokia Lumia 1020, which was met with critical acclaim.

Nokia has already announced it will hold a special press conference at MWC 2014 on Monday, February 24.

The latest rumours suggest Nokia will use the Barcelona-based technology conference to launch its first Android phone, currently codenamed the Nokia Normandy.

Toshiba: We do not see 3D extending much further

Toshiba has suggested that 3D TVs are circling the drain, stating that there is no consumer demand for the extra-dimensional TV technology.

Speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews recently, the company has claimed that it does not see the lifeline of 3D TVs extending much further, adding that 4K has replaced 3D as the next big trend on the TV scene.

“No, there is not still demand for 3D,” an official Toshiba spokesperson told us when questioned on the state of the market.

They added: “We have not seen a huge demand for 3D and we do not see that trend extending its lifeline much further.”

Although condemning 3D TVs to the annals of time, the Toshiba representative has claimed that the technology will not disappear just yet.

“It’s not that it is officially dead; it’s just not what consumers are looking for,” he said speaking with TrustedReviews. “We find that consumers are looking for a higher resolution and we have been seeing that over decades.”

Detailing this visuals-based expansion he stated: “We went from VHS to DVD and then from DVD to 720p to 1080p to Blu-ray and now 4K is the next big thing.”

Despite 3D becoming something of a standard feature on many current high-end TVs, Toshiba has claimed that even those with 3D TVs in their homes are reluctant to make use of the features.

“I think that 3D still does great in the theatres, just not so in a home theatre. If people do buy the 3D TVs, we found that they just weren’t using it that much,” he said.

“The content was another issue, there was limited 3D content there, and people don’t like the glasses as they were uncomfortable.”

Alienware Steam Machine will be upgradable, but it “will not be easy”

Alienware has clarified that the Alienware Steam Machine will be upgradable, but it will not be easy to do.

Frank Azor, Alienware General Manager, has released a statement shedding more light on his previous statement that the company’s Steam Machine will be locked down.

Originally, speaking to TrustedReviews at CES 2014, Azor said Alienware “will be updating our Steam Machines every year”, before adding that “there will be no customisation options, you can’t really update it.”

On hearing this, consumers were outraged that a gaming PC in the living room would be locked in just like the Xbox One and PS4.

However, Azor has now issued a statement suggesting it will be possible, but it won’t be easy.

“Enabling customers the opportunity to upgrade components has been a core tenet for Alienware since the company was founded, and that remains true today,” said Azor. “The Alienware Steam Machine, announced at CES, is designed to deliver a great gaming experience in the living room and we will enable customers to upgrade components.”

It seems the limited upgrading options are due to the Alienware Steam Machine’s design, which will be considerably smaller than the Xbox One and PS4.

“Considering we’ve purposefully designed the Alienware Steam Machine to be smaller than the latest generation consoles, upgrading the internal components will not be as easy as compared to other platforms, such as the Alienware X51, but we will not prevent a customer from upgrading.”

When the Steam Machine was announced, the company also revealed it would launch a Steam Machine version of the Alienware X51 desktop PC simultaneously in “late 2014.”

Azor advises that this would be the better option for those looking to customise and upgrade their Steam Machines in the future.

“If a customer is interested in modding and upgrading their rig on a regular basis, then we recommend the Alienware X51. Enabling easy upgradeability was a critical design requirement for the X51. It includes features such as single screw access to all internal components, and easy-to-remove ODD, HDD, graphics etc.”

“We feel we have multiple options for customers based on their individual needs. If a gamer wants more freedom to upgrade, we have the X51. If they would prefer a smaller, more console-like system, we will offer the Alienware Steam Machine.”

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite not coming to UK says Samsung

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite

Samsung has confirmed that the heavily rumoured Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite will not be coming to the UK.

Simultaneously confirming and ridding us of a miniature Galaxy Note 3, a Samsung spokesperson told TechRadar the Note 3 Lite is not UK bound.

“Samsung can confirm that the Note 3 Lite will not be coming to the UK market”, said the spokesperson.

Unfortunately, there was no further information given about the release date or actual availability of the smaller and lower spec Note 3, but Samsung said it would come to market called the Note 3 Lite rather than Neo.

Earlier today, press images from a Belgian retailer were posted online building our hopes for a European release for the Note 3 Lite.

It was tipped to have a rather high price of €599 (£592), though that’s still quite short of the Galaxy Note 3 RRP when it launched last year.

A host of information about the Note 3 Neo (or Lite) have emerged in recent weeks to complement the latest press pics.

It’s supposed to have a 5.55-inch 720p HD Super AMOLED display, 8-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage bolstered by a microSD card slot and running on a 3,100mAh battery.

There were also rumours the Note 3 Lite could be the first hexa-core device with a 1.7GHz dual-core processor and 1.3GHz quad-core CPU.

Alas, it seems despite the specs and intrigue surrounding the Note 3 Lite, UK consumers won’t even get their mitts on it.

New Mac Mini coming February according to retailer

Apple’s Mac Mini line will be revamped this February, according to one Belgian retailer.

The Mac Mini line was last updated back in October 2012, which means that it’s well past due a bit of attention. That could well come over the next month, if reports are to be believed.

Belgian retailer Computerstore recently listed (it now seems to have been removed) a new version of the Mac Mini for release in February. Though the image used was of the current model, this appeared to be a simple placeholder when you consider the accompanying specs.

According to the (Google Translated) blurb, "The Mac mini is equipped with the latest Intel Core i7 processor from Haswell series." It also makes mention of Intel’s integrated Iris graphics chip.

We’ve seen Intel’s Haswell chipsets appearing in the rest of the Mac range, but not the Mac Mini up to this point.

The listing also makes mention of the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard amongst its various connection options, though it only references a "high-speed Thunderbolt connection." The latest Mac Pro and Macbook Pro with Retina use Thunderbolt 2.

Of course, retailer information isn’t always the most reliable of sources for hardware leaks. It is worth noting, however, that when one Mac Rumours forum user contacted the Belgian retailer for corroboration on this listing, they were told that the information "comes from Apple or reliable sources."

Make of that what you will. All we know is that there have been three unibody Mac Minis released across three consecutive years since 2010, and 2013’s no-show broke that sequence. We’re definitely due another one.

Windows 8.1 update screenshot reveals Store apps in desktop taskbar

Leaked screenshots of the next Windows 8.1 update show that Microsoft is working to return its OS to usability for those with a keyboard and mouse setup.

As featured on Russian website WZor, the screenshots show a Windows Store app icon present in the desktop taskbar. Previously you’d have to access this through the resurrected Start menu - or, of course, in its natural 'Metro' environment.

The ability to pin such Metro apps to the desktop taskbar is confirmed by looking at the open Taskbar and Navigation properties window that’s open above. This reveals a new checkable option to "Show Store apps on the task bar."

Of course, if those apps are just going to run in full screen anyway, it might be argued that there’s little point to this particular addition. Still, one step at a time, eh?

In another move to restore Windows 8 to mouse-led usability, Windows blogger Paul Thurrot has revealed that Microsoft will add a close box to Metro apps. Like desktop apps, this will enable heavy mouse users to close applications in the default Windows 8 view with a simple click in place of the standard gesture or keyboard shortcuts.

Microsoft is rumoured to be planning more sweeping changes in a subsequent update code-named 'Threshold,' which some commentators are referring to as Windows 9. This will apparently add things like windowed Metro apps and a full Start Menu, but it’s not scheduled for release until April 2015.

DrayTek Vigor 2860n Plus Review

What is the DrayTek Vigor 2860n Plus?

DrayTek specialises in business focused routers and the ‘2860NP’ is its new, premium dual-band 802.11n router, which it hopes will keep it at the top of companies’ wish lists. For the uninitiated who just did a double take at the price for a router lacking 802.11ac, the reason is DrayTek’s famous focus on reliability and security as well as its integrated modem. With 802.11ac yet to be officially ratified don’t expect to see it on a DrayTek router any time soon.

As such the bigger question is, in a time where reliability and wireless speeds are rising rapidly in cheaper consumer products, is the premium paid for a DrayTek device still worth it?

DrayTek 2860NP

DrayTek Vigor 2860n Plus – Design

It would be fair to say style is not at the forefront of DrayTek’s design decisions, but for what the 2860NP sacrifices in looks, it makes up for in build quality and practicality.

Put succinctly, the 2860NP is rock solid. At 240.96 x 165.07 x 43.96 is one of the largest routers we’ve seen in recent times, though at 600g not one of the heaviest. Despite this it doesn’t feel hollow like most routers due to the thick casing, something it can offer since it ships with three external antennas.

Unlike most consumer orientated routers the 2860NP also puts its ports on the front for easy access, rather than at the back with the power socket. This makes a great deal of sense and is something we’d prefer more manufacturers did since trailing cables behind a router is inconvenient and messy.

DrayTek 2860NP 3

DrayTek Vigor 2860n Plus – Features

Still looks never sell a DrayTek router, so what can the 2860NP do? The aforementioned dual-band 802.11n is obviously at the forefront along with backwards compatibility with 802.11abg but its integrated modem is arguably more interesting as it supports both ADSL and VDSL fibre optic broadband, including BT Infinity.

So what about all the ports on the front? For starters DrayTek addresses something we’ve long called for in consumer-focused routers: more Gigabit Ethernet ports. The 2860NP has six rather than the usual four and it is joined by a Gigabit WAN port should you wish to connect it to a cable modem. There are also VDSL/ADSL jack and dual USB ports, though they are limited to USB 2.0.

Meanwhile the rash of activity lights gives indicators for just about anything you could need: USB, wireless bands, DSL, Quality of Service (QoS), power (ACT), cable Internet (WAN2), web content filters (WCF), denial of service protection (DoS). There is also a physical button to toggle WPS / Wi-Fi on/off and the factory reset pinhole.

DrayTek 2860NP 4

Additionally out of the ordinary functionality includes the ability to have up to four wireless SSIDs with numerous secure Guest modes, heavily customisable firewalls based on combinations of users, rules and restrictions and the ability to selectively apply QoS to specific users. There’s the option to create an ‘isolated VPN’ too, which prevents connected users from communicating with other users connected via a VPN. In short, privacy options are incredibly high.

There is also the ‘Commtouch filter’ that can block a variety of categories like nudity, drugs, games, social media and dating websites. The catch is to apply a blanket filter requires the ‘DrayTek GlobalView Web Filtering’ software, which runs from £24 to £85 per annum and we’ve seen consumer rivals like Smart Wi-Fi from Linksys offer similarly smart filters for free.

Elsewhere you’ll find more typical options such as support for WPA/WPA2 security and IPv6 and the USB ports can support the installation of 4G dongles, though there is a limited array of compatible models.

Huawei: Ascend Mate was originally designed with a stylus

Having unveiled its second-generation device, Huawei has revealed that the 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate was originally designed with a stylus before the input peripheral was scrapped.

A move that would have seen the oversized phablet device closer resemble the market leading Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Chinese manufacturer Huawei has spoken out on how it originally planned its Mate product to come with its own S-Pen rivalling add-on.

“We actually started the Ascend Mate with a stylus,” Jerry Huang, Huawei’s Director of Marketing told Trusted Reviews following the CES 2014 launch of the Huawei Ascend Mate 2.

Detailing the company’s thinking behind scrapping the Mate’s stylus companion, Huang stated: “We decided that the really important thing with the phone was to offer the best user experience.

“Because we are using a touch screen we wanted to offer the best user experience with the fingers, as consumers will be using their fingers most of the time.”

Suggesting that design, as well as the overall user experience, affected the company’s decision he added: “The reason we have the best screen to body ratio is because we want the design of the phone to be as compact as possible for users to easily access all of the screen area with their fingers.”

The Huawei Ascend Mate 2 was officially unveiled last week, with the second-gen phablet said to come with a two-day heavy usage battery life.

Although increasing its staying power and adopting a modified form factor, the Huawei Ascend Mate 2 has also launched without an integrated stylus.

iPhone 6 design reportedly finalised with 4.8-inch screen

iPhone 5S

iPhone 6 to grow to 4.8-inches

Apple has reportedly finalised the iPhone 6 design, with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 rival said to be heading to launch with a 4.8-inch display in tow.

The latest iPhone 6 rumours have surfaced courtesy of a Wall Street analyst, with the industry specialist reporting that the final iPhone 6 design has been decided upon ahead of the handset being put into production in time for release later this year.

Speaking in a note to investors, Cowen and Company analyst Timothy Arcuri stated that the iPhone 6 design has been “locked down”, with the claimed move to a larger 4.8-inch display lining up alongside the introduction of high speed 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity.

Basing his predictions on reported checks within Apple’s supply chain, Arcuri has suggested that Apple is planning to introduce “key software innovations” to the iPhone 6, a move that follows last year’s drastic iOS 7 overhaul.

Stating that the current iPhone 5S was simply a “set-up” to a grander smartphone release this year, the analyst has predicted that the iPhone 6 will focus heavily on a new mobile payment system, with an integrated Touch ID fingerprint scanner set to be a base for the new platform.

Although Arcuri has predicted that the iPhone 6 release date will follow Apple’s now customary product cycle and launch in September, earlier this week is was claimed that the phone will launch as early as June.

While a June arrival is generally considered to be a bit premature, the Wall Street analyst has stated that such a launch window is “not out of the question” just yet.

Samsung Tizen smartphone facing further delays

Samsung has confirmed that the first Samsung Tizen smartphone is facing a new round of delays, the latest handset running the new OS to be pushed back.

Originally pegged for a 2013 arrival, the eagerly awaited Samsung Tizen phone had widely expected to have been heading for an MWC 2014 unveiling next month. Now however, latest reports have cited Samsung representatives as confirming the handset is to be pushed back once again.

It is true that the release has been delayed,” an official Samsung spokesperson reportedly said speaking at the Samsung Electronics Media Solution Centre in Korea today.

They are said to have added: “Previously we had planned to release in the first half of this year in several countries, including Korea and Russia.”

Despite confirming the Samsung Tizen handset is facing delays that will see the device pushed back until the latter half of 2014 at the earliest, the company has failed to offer any more precise indications as to when the Android and Windows Phone rivalling handset will land.

Far from the first Tizen smartphone to face continuing delays, earlier this week the Japanese NTT DoCoMo handset was scrapped ahead of launch.

Tizen is a new Linux-based mobile operating system that is targeted as a direct rival to Google’s currently dominant Android OS.

Recently a selection of Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours had suggested the phone would play host to the Tizen OS, reports which now appear to be wide of the mark.

Cut the Rope coming to 3DS, confirms Activision

Cut the Rope

Om Nom sniffs out the candy on 3DS soon

Activision has confirmed that Cut the Rope will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS in the near future.

Om Nom will be making his way onto the 3DS and its siblings like the Nintendo 2DS, with a new title named Cut the Rope: Triple Treat.

Similar to the Angry Birds Trilogy available for 3DS, PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii among other platforms, the 3DS Cut the Rope title will combine three existing title into one package.

Cut the Rope: Triple Treat offers the original Cut the Rope, Cut the Rope: Experiments and Cut the Rope: Time Travel, but not the latest sequel Cut the Rope 2: Om Nom’s Unexpected Adventure.

“Cut the Rope: Triple Treat compiles three standalone adventures, bursting with over 650 levels for more than 50 hours of gameplay, as well as the precision control interface of the Nintendo 3DS stylus, online leaderboards, in-game achievements, stereoscopic 3D visuals during gameplay and cheerfully animated Om Nom stories”, reads the official blurb.

The announcement is a little odd, as the original Cut the Rope is already on the Nintendo eShop and is also offered as DSiWare.

It costs £4.49 on the Nintendo eShop, so surely it would be better to offer the title as a free or paid-for upgrade. Instead, those interested in playing more Cut the Rope on their 3DS will have to buy the first game again and more, for a higher cost.

Hopefully, Cut the Rope won’t get the full Angry Birds retail treatment, matching it price for price. Currently, you can buy the Angry Birds Trilogy for around £20 across all platforms, but it was originally given the full game RRP of £40.

There’s no word on a price or release date for Cut the Rope: Triple Treat as yet.

Trend for larger TV purchases will continue says retailer

Despite standard TV sizes jumping from 32-inches to 46-inch in a matter of years, retailer John Lewis has claimed that the trend for increasingly large TVs will continue.

Speaking with TrustedReviews, the high street seller has suggested that it has seen no decline in the trend for increasingly large TV sales, with consumers now favouring 46-inch models as a standard purchase over smaller sets.

“The trend towards bigger screens is definitely going to continue,” John Kempner, a lead TV Buyer with John Lewis said.

He added: “Most new TV owners are now coming into the market with 46-inch to 47-inch models, that’s where we are seeing the biggest growth.

“People are migrating away from 32-inch up to 40-inch, but a lot of people are now buying TVs that are 50-inches and above. This is definitely a trend which will continue, without a doubt.”

Although dropping prices is sure to have played a major role in this widespread move to larger screen sizes, Kempner has also claimed that improving TV designs has helped make the transition a viable option for many consumers.

“One of the constraints people had in not buying a big TV previously was that they didn’t look very nice,” the retail buyer told us. “Now they actually look very beautiful and with the continually shrinking bezels you are not taking up too much space.”

Looking to how big consumer TVs will go and where the next standard of sizes will fall, Kempner has remained hesitant stated: “I don’t know where it is going to end.”

He added: “Every year we come out to CES and we see bigger and bigger screens – they are showing 110-inch TVs this time. I’m not expecting too many customers to buy those just yet, but it shows where the market is going.”

LG tipped to equip all 2014 flagships with fingerprint scanners

LG could equip all its 2014 flagships with fingerprint scanners, if the latest information is accurate.

According to a new rumour, LG will not only fit the LG G3 with a fingerprint scanner, but other high-end devices too.

A report from the Korean site, ETNews has suggested the LG G3 and the LG G Pro 2 will feature fingerprint scanners similar to that of the iPhone 5S.

Other devices like the HTC One Max have implemented fingerprint scanners, but they haven’t been quite as successful, accurate or well-placed as Apple’s Touch ID sensor embedded in the iPhone 5S home button.

We wonder whether LG will choose to embed the fingerprint sensor within the rear buttons introduced with the LG G2.

“Rather than to simply apply fingerprint recognition functionality, it is important to improve security and user convenience at the same time,” said the LG Electronics insider. “We will give prominence to our functional differentiations in order not to suffer the disgrace of being called a mimicker to follow what the competitors do.”

The insider suggests LG will apply fingerprint sensors to “four – five premium models including the two this year”.

LG will have to compete with the fingerprint sensor technology potentially included with the Samsung Galaxy S5 as well as whatever Apple pulls out of the bag with the iPhone 6.

The latest rumour is that the Galaxy S5 will feature a fingerprint sensor under the screen.

“To improve its presence in the premium smartphone market, LG Electronics needs to apply innovative functions, such as optical image stabilising (OIS), fingerprint recognition, to its smartphones ahead of its competitors,” said a stock market analyst. “Attention is drawn to how LG Electronics will use fingerprint recognition functionality, which has become rather stale, in differentiating its products.”

LG to launch men’s and women’s specific fitness trackers

LG has confirmed that it intends to build on its recent LG LifeBand Touch unveiling, announcing it will release further fitness trackers individually designed for men and women.

While current fitness tracking gadgets tend to be unisex offerings, with some available in a variety of sizes for differing wrists, LG has confirmed that it plans to launch a selection of devices that are specifically tailed to the different physical and performance-based attributes of men and women.

Speaking with TrustedReviews on the company’s future fitness plans, Darren Peterson, a Senior Content and Service manager at LG, stated: “We will have different versions for men and for women moving forward.”

He added: “We are going to launch with the LifeBand Touch first but different sizes and shapes will follow.”

Announced during CES 2014, the LG LifeBand Touch was unveiled as a wrist-mounted fitness tracker, similar to the market leading Nike FuelBand SE.

As well as confirming the company’s intent to launch a female exclusive fitness tracker, Peterson has suggested that despite no previous fitness market experience, LG can compete with the specialist likes of Nike and Adidas.

“I think this is going to be a big new market so there is plenty of room for multiple brands to play in it, as long as the products are going to stand up and be good enough.”

Discussing the company’s first offering he added: “The LG LifeBand Touch is launching this year with an OLED touchscreen and you can see all your incoming calls and messages. It will also track all your steps and burned calories.”

While the LG LifeBand Touch is set to be rolled out to retailers around “late March, early April,” the LG spokesperson has offered no indication as to when the company will launch its gender-tailored fitness offerings.
