Motorola CEO questions the need for tablets

Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has questioned the need for tablets, stating that unlike smartphones, the larger screen devices are a luxury rather than a necessity.

Speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews recently, Woodside revealed that not only are tablets not on Motorola’s immediate roadmap, he does not fully understand the need for such a device.

Everybody needs a phone. Does everybody need a tablet? I’m not sure,” the Motorola CEO questioned.

Merging his and the company’s opinions, he added: “Do I need a tablet and a phone? I don’t know.

“Maybe if you’re super wealthy you can afford a tablet and two different sized phones but lots of people aren’t going to be in that position so for now we’re focussing on mobile computing being the phone – but different form factors and sizes.”

Despite Woodside’s current reservations, Motorola is no stranger to the tablet scene having previously launched the Android powered Motorola Xoom in both 10-inch and 8-inch forms to little commercial or critical acclaim.

Asked whether Motorola would launch new tablets in the future, Woodside failed to rule out the possibility stating: “Maybe someday.”

He added: “The bigger demand and where we see the bigger problems is in the phone, so that’s where we’re focussing our efforts on.”

Earlier this week Motorola confirmed that the Motorola Moto X will launch in the UK on February 1, more than six months after the flagship phone was originally introduced to the US.
