Samsung Galaxy S5 launch event pencilled in for February 23?

Samsung could launch the Samsung Galaxy S5 and its new version of the Touchwiz UI at a Samsung Unpacked 2014 event at MWC.

The latest information suggests Samsung has scheduled an Unpacked event for Sunday, February 23 – the press day of MWC 2014 in Barcelona.

According to Mobile Review editor, Eldar Murtazin, a notorious mobile tipster and blogger, the Galaxy S5 will be launched at the tech event press conference.

“Samsung Galaxy S5 launch – 18.00. Barcelona. 23 February. Price the same. Launch – end of April. Specs – u know them. New touchwiz”, reads Murtazin’s tweet.

While this all sounds well and good, we’re really not convinced Samsung will opt to launch its 2014 flagship at MWC.

Although it may well launch something like the heavily rumoured Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo (or Lite), we sincerely doubt it’ll use MWC as a platform for the Galaxy S5.

The South Korean electronics giant has always steered clear of MWC in the past for such a big launch, even waiting until post-MWC to launch the Samsung Galaxy S4 last year. It did the same for the Samsung Galaxy S3 the year before as well.

Various leaks have suggested the S5 and the recently leaked new Touchwiz UI will star in a separate event held after MWC in London or New York, not Barcelona at all.

When it is launched, the Samsung Galaxy S5 should come with a 5.25-inch 2K QHD resolution display running on a 2,900mAh battery and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor with 3GB of RAM.

It is also tipped to include 4K video recording via a 16-megapixel rear ISOCELL camera and a fingerprint scanner built into the display itself. This would contrast with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor featured in the home button of Apple’s iPhone 5S.
