Nokia has revealed it sold over 8.2 million Lumia devices during Q4 2013.
As Nokia prepares to become a part of Microsoft’s empire, the Finnish smartphone manufacturer reveals it saw a slight dip in sales for the last quarter of 2013.
For Q4 2013, which includes the Christmas period, Nokia sold 8.2 million Lumia devices down from 8.8 million the previous quarter.
Nokia is blaming the competitive smartphone market and a rapidly expanding army of budget rival devices running Android on its falling sales figures.
“The fourth quarter of 2013 was a watershed moment in Nokia’s history”, said Risto Siilasmaa, Nokia Chairman and interim CEO. “Having received overwhelmingly strong support from our shareholders at our extraordinary general meeting in November for the sale of our phones business to Microsoft, we are diligently working towards defining Nokia’s future direction.”
From the financial figures released for the quarter, Nokia’s mobile division lost around €198 million (£162 million).
This means Microsoft has a lot of work to do if it wants to prove Windows Phone 8 is a success.
In the latter half of last year Nokia launched its first tablet, the 10-inch Nokia Lumia 2520 and the 6-inch “phablet” Nokia Lumia 1520 . It also unveiled its camera-centric 2013 flagship, the Nokia Lumia 1020, which was met with critical acclaim.
Nokia has already announced it will hold a special press conference at MWC 2014 on Monday, February 24.
The latest rumours suggest Nokia will use the Barcelona-based technology conference to launch its first Android phone, currently codenamed the Nokia Normandy.
