Microsoft has confirmed competitive Xbox One digital games pricing is “on the agenda”.
Apparently, Microsoft is already planning to readjust the prices of Xbox One digital titles available in the Xbox Live store.
Larry Hyrb, Director of Programming for Xbox Live and better known as Major Nelson, has spoken out on a Reddit thread dedicated to the discussion of Xbox One digital downloads.
Among the many things being asked for by the Xbox One gamers is the ability to pre-order and pre-load digital titles and to be able to buy digital game codes in high street retail outlets.
Gamers are also wondering if and when the Xbox Live Games on Gold service will extend to Xbox One titles in the future.
“We are way aware if this and many of the concerns of the community,” said Hyrb. “We have some great stuff planned for Xbox One this year (and beyond). As soon as we can share some of the goodness… we will :)”
One such commenter suggested that Microsoft’s plans should include reassessing the pricing of its digital games library for the next-gen console:
“I hope [the great stuff] includes competitive pricing for digital downloads, because it does feel like we are being punished for downloading digitally.”
Hyrb then confirmed that: “It is indeed on the agenda”.
Microsoft was heavily criticised for raising the price of key Xbox One exclusives from £44.99 to £49.99 in December. This included games like Ryse: Son of Rome , Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3.
Digital games on both the PS4 and Xbox One are considerably more expensive than their physical copy counterparts, even for cross-platform titles.
It seems bizarre that Microsoft and Sony would charge more for digital titles when they actually cost less to make, and have been ranting on about the digital future since both consoles were announced.
