The much mooted iPad Pro could have a serious competitor before it’s even landed, with Sony expected to launch the 12-inch Xperia Tablet Ultra in early 2015.

With Apple having widely been rumoured to be working on a 12.9-inch tablet – the iPad Pro – for some time, latest reports have suggested Sony could beat the Cupertino-based giant to the punch.

According to Taiwanese news outlet Digitimes, Sony is prepping a 12-inch, Android powered Xperia Tablet Ultra device for launch in the first half of the coming year.

Although an exact timeframe is still unclear, with CES 2015 just around the corner, it is not unfeasible that Sony could use the Las Vegas-based convention as a platform from which to unveil the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact sibling.

While Digitime’s ‘anonymous’ sources have a questionable record, the rumours echo leaks from earlier this month with tipped an oversized Sony tablet for launch.

According to recent leaks, the Xperia Tablet Ultra will pair its 12.9-inch form factor with a stunningly detailed 3840 x 2400 pixel resolution display.

Further specs tipped to feature with the reportedly 8.6mm thick device include an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera and a 64-bit Qualcomm processor.

Although Sony has yet to formally acknowledge the existence of such a device, the latest reports have suggested the laptop-sized tablet could line up alongside a wallet-busting $1,000 (£650) price tag.
