Screen replacement service iCracked has revealed that the iPhone 6 is already accounting for 15 per cent of its requested screen repairs.
Despite the iPhone 6 having only been available for a couple of months, it appears that the metal bodied smartphone has been taking repeated trips to the concrete or off the edge of tables since day one.
“The iPhone 6 is already accounting for 15 per cent of our daily requests,” iCracked co-founder and CEO A.J. Forsythe said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews recently.
He added: “We received our first iPhone 6 repair request the day the phone launched and we had iPhone 6 parts available within the first week.”
With iCracked currently servicing over 10,000 smashed smartphones and tablets per month, this sizeable ratio means more than 1,500 iPhone 6 handsets are being repaired through this solitary service each month.
While most of these cracked screens will be the result of clumsy owners, the iPhone 6’s opening days on sale were plagued by fragility concerns.
Subject of the recent ‘bendgate’ saga, the Galaxy S5 and LG G3 rival was found to bend and flex when put under only moderate amounts of pressure.
While 15 per cent might sound a lot, Forsythe is predicting this figure will only rise as the iPhone 6 adoption continues to increase.
According to iCracked’s research, leading smartphone lines have a “25 per cent breakage rate in the first two years.”
What’s more, an estimated 18 per cent of smartphone owners are currently walking the streets with a device that features a cracked or damaged display.
A replacement iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus screen through iCracked will set consumers back the princely sum of £160.
Although iPhone 6 requests are on the rise, Apple’s former smartphones – the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C – still account for more than half of iCracked’s repairs. The company also services a number of Android devices, including the Galaxy Note 3.
