Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has been crowned the 2014 Christmas number one game, outselling FIFA 15 to take the title.

With COD and FIFA having traded chart success in recent weeks, Activision’s first person epic has edged its football-themed rival to claim the coveted Christmas crown.

Becoming the fifth title in the Call of Duty franchise to claim the festive top spot, Advanced Warfare saw week-on-week sales jump 33 per cent thanks to a number of retailer promotions.

Although GTA 5 took top honours in the individual format charts – shifting more copies on PS4 than any other game – Rockstar’s open world giant could only claim third in the all format chart.

With Far Cry 4 entering the lucrative festive period in fourth, Assassin’s Creed Unity rounded out the top five, up from tenth last week thanks to a 97 per cent jump in sales.

Having been handed a £15 price cut during the past week, Ubisoft’s The Crew was the sixth highest selling pre-Christmas release followed by Destiny and the ever-present Minecraft.

With both the Xbox One and PS4 having now been on sale for a year, ‘next-gen titles’ dominate the Christmas top 10, although all-platform Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham rounded out the week’s lead positions.
