Sony could be planning to release The Interview on Crackle free of charge, at least according to new rumours.
The New York Post reports that ‘sources’ revealed the firm was considering the move over the weekend.
If you’ve never heard of it, Crackle is an app where old TV shows and movies are given away for free – a bit like a graveyard for media now unloved.
Sony owns Crackle, and so it would make the perfect avenue for a movie release, giving Sony both an outlet to ship its film and also to promote the app.

It’s in response to the cancelled Christmas Day release of The Interview, a much mooted comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco that sees the pair acting as journalists tasked by the CIA with assassinating Kim Jong-Un, the current leader of North Korea.
Hackers hit out at Sony with threats referencing 9/11, demanding Sony cancel its release.
As a result, five major cinema chains across the US cancel their Christmas Day screenings, leaving Sony no choice but to cancel the release in its entirety.
The FBI has since outed the hackers as working for the North Korean government, which has since chilled the already frosty relations between the state and the USA.
US President Barack Obama has even come out and said that Sony made a ‘mistake’ cancelling the screenings, so it’s very likely the firm is looking for alternative avenues for a release.
