Amazon has confirmed UK availability for the revamped Kindle Fire HD X tablets, with pre-orders opening today.
The company revealed the 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX tablet, with its 1920 x 1200 display, will ship on November 13, from £199 for the 16GB model. Users will be charged an extra £70 for the 4G version of the device, with connectivity coming exclusively through a tie-in with Vodafone.
The larger 8.9-inch HDX model starts at a not-insignificant £329. For £399 you'll be able to snap up the 4G version of the device, while there are also three storage options. This is where it gets quite pricey, as for the 4G-enabled 64GB, 8.9-inch model Amazon is asking £479. Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is also available for pre-order today, but won't be shipped until November 19.
For their outlay, users will get the "better than HD" 2500 x 1600 display (which comes in at 339ppi), while both tablets will benefit from three times the power of the previous generation, thanks to the 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU. There's also double the memory at 2GB RAM.
Both tablets will be have access to an 8-megapixel rear facing camera with 1080p and an advertised battery life of 11 hours for general use and 17 hours when reading Kindle books.
Vodafone has announced that all 4G HDX models sold in the UK will come with their LTE SIM-cards. For £25, users will be able to buy a Starter Pack that'll give them 5GB a month for three months. Once that's expired, they'll be encouraged to sign up for one of the company's data plans.
For those scared off by the much-increased price tag and not bothered by top-level specs, Amazon also announced the new availability of the retooled, Kindle Fire HD tablet. It can be pre-ordered today from £119 and will be shipped from October 24th.
That device brings a slimmer form factor to match the HDX models, while there's an improved 1.5GHz quad-core processor to boot. That should keep the £119 Tesco Hudl in line.
