Apple planning ultra-thin 12-inch MacBook with Retina display says analyst

Apple is working on an ultra-slim 12-inch MacBook with a Retina display, according to a recent analyst prediction.

Of course, that little phrase 'analyst prediction' should inform you to take this bit of information with a pinch of salt, but this particular source has been on the money with a number of Apple forecasts in the past.

Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, who predicted both the launch of the MacBook Pro with Retina display on top of the existing range and the discontinuation of the 17-inch MacBook, claims that Apple will launch an all-new type of MacBook in the middle of 2014.

It will feature a "much improved clamshell structure" that's even slimmer and lighter than the current MacBook Air. While the aforementioned Apple notebook comes in 11 and 13-inch variants, this new model will sport a 12-inch screen - and yes, this time it will be a Retina display.

According to Kuo, this new meeting point between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro range "will redefine laptop computing once again following the milestone created by the MacBook Air."

This tallies with earlier analyst reports that have pointed to the possible launch of a 12-inch MacBook with a 2304 x 1440 resolution next year.

There have been calls for a Retina-equipped MacBook Air since the launch of the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display in June of last year.
