Sonos Play:1 compact speaker officially announced

Sonos has officially unveiled the latest addition to its speaker system range, the compact and wireless Sonos Play:1.

Available later this month, the Sonos Play:1 will rival alternatives like the Pure Jongo S3, offering a wireless streaming speaker in a compact design.

“Sonos was created upon the belief you should never have to choose between quality sound and an easy way to access all your music at home,” said John MacFarlane, CEO of Sonos. “The Play:1 makes getting started with Sonos even more accessible to music lovers than ever before.”

Sonos Play:1 Features

The Sonos Play:1 includes new smart technologies that aim to minimise distortion, even when played at high volumes. The compact speaker has a custom-designed mid-woofer and tweet for claimed deep and rich sounds.

New processing technologies aim to push the drivers for “powerful low-end and crisp mids and highs” with the Play:1.

Weighing in at 2.43kg, the Sonos Play:1 has dimensions of 119.7 x 119.7 x 161.45 making it smaller than its rival the Pure Jongo S3, but it does lack a built-in battery.

Capable of connecting with smartphones, tablets and desktop platforms, the Play:1 has a dedicated app that allows music streaming from services like Spotify and Last.fm as well as from personal music libraries.

Sonos also offers its own music service, which includes over 100,000 free Internet radio stations, podcasts and other content.

If you fancy splashing the cash, you can pair two Sonos Play:1 speakers together for stereo sound or add them to your Sonos Playbar and Sonos Sub for a 5.1 home theatre system.

Sonos Play:1 Release Date and Price

The Sonos Play:1 will be available from October 29 in the UK, sold at select partners or directly from the Sonos website.

It retails for £169 and for a limited Christmas period comes with a free Sonos Bridge, which will usually set you back £39.
