Windows Phone 8 Update 3 release teases Nokia Lumia 1520 launch

Microsoft has released the Windows Phone 8 Update 3 with support for larger and Full 1080p HD resolution displays, teasing a Nokia Lumia 1520 launch.

Outlining three main goals for the Windows Phone 8 Update 3, Microsoft has introduced support for 5- and 6-inch screens.

“A bigger Start screen for more Live Tiles. A new, customisable Driving Mode. Better Accessibility options”, said Darren Laybourn, Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone. “These are just some of the new features and innovations that we’re getting ready to deliver you in Windows Phone 8 Update 3, which will roll out to existing phones over the next several months.”

Windows Phone 8 Update 3 will allow devices with 5- or 6-inch displays to pack six Live Tiles across the Start screen instead of four, with all tiles automatically and “carefully scaled” to take advantage not only of the expanded real estate but also the Full 1080p HD resolution.

This will come in useful when the heavily rumoured Nokia Lumia 1520 launches, most likely at the Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi on October 22.

Potentially, the Lumia 1520 could be the first Nokia Windows Phone 8 handset to feature a 6-inch display with a full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution.

Windows Phone 8 Update 3 also has support for Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processors, which could also be featured in the Nokia Lumia 1520.

Driving Mode is another new Update 3 feature, limiting notifications on the lock screen so you can use your Windows Phone 8 device as a navigation tool with fewer potential distractions. The new Driving Mode can also be configured to send automatic replies to anyone trying to get hold of you when you’re behind the wheel.

There’s also a new Mobile Accessibility section for Windows Phone 8 with Update 3 and Microsoft has introduced Internet Sharing too.

Other new features with Update 3 include a screen rotation lock, custom ringtones, storage settings, the ability to close apps with the App Switcher and improved Bluetooth connectivity.
