Huawei Ascend P7 with sapphire display confirmed

A version of the Huawei Ascend P7 with a sapphire display has been confirmed by the company’s chairman.

Following a number of leaks and rumours surrounding a sapphire display variant of the Ascend P7, Huawei Chairman Yu Chengdong has confirmed its existence.

Chengdong took to Weibo to share the above image, revealing that the company is releasing a revamped version of the Ascend P7 with a sapphire display.

Although Chengdong didn’t reveal the pricing for its first sapphire phone, apparently it will be fairly exclusive in some way, which may mean limited availability.

Aside from more niche handset, this version of the Ascend P7 could be the first phone to feature a sapphire crystal display if it is unveiled at IFA 2014 in Berlin next week.

We expect that the basic specs of the Ascend P7 will stay the same, with the phone just adding a sapphire display panel.

The current Ascend P7 model features a 5-inch full 1080p HD display running on a quad-core 1.8GHz HiSilicon Kirin 910T processor and 2GB of RAM. It also has a 13-megapixel rear camera, partnered with a selfie-focused 8-megapixel front-facing camera.

If it is launched next week, it could also beat the iPhone 6 to market. The majority of rumours and leaked videos suggest the iPhone 5S successor will also be unveiled with a sapphire display for increased ruggedness and durability.

The iPhone 6 is expected to have a 4.7-inch panel protected by sapphire display, with the new Apple A8 processor running things behind the scenes.

Huawei’s rival Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi is also supposedly poised to launch a sapphire display handset in the near future. Following the success of the Xiaomi Mi 3, Huawei and Apple will no doubt want to get their handsets out as soon as possible.
