The LG G Flex shows off its curves
Press renders of the curved LG G Flex have emerged online, revealing the phone will be officially announced next month.
LG announced that it had started mass production of its flexible smartphone displays earlier this month and now it seems increasingly likely the LG G Flex will be launched in November.
According to Engadget, who acquired the LG G Flex press renders, the curved smartphone will launch “sometime next month” although an exact date isn’t known.
Unlike the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Round, which curves gently from side to side, it seems the LG G Flex will arc from top to bottom, potentially following the natural curve of the user’s face.
When held in landscape mode, the LG G Flex mimics the bend of the LG Curved OLED TV displays, which are designed to make for a more immersive TV viewing experience.
The sources also confirmed that the LG G Flex will have a 6-inch display, utilising the flexible OLED panels currently being mass produced by LG.
LG’s 6-inch flexible OLED panels are built on plastic substrates rather than glass that gives them “unbreakable” and “bendable qualities.”
Of course, the LG G Flex won’t actually be a flexible smartphone, but the plastic OLED panel will be more durable than other glass smartphone displays.
Earlier this month, LG did unveil a trio of battery technologies, including the LG Chem Curved Battery and bending, twisting Cable Battery.
The company expects to use these battery technologies in “ IT devices with curved screens or flexible designs such as smartphones, watches and glasses” in the years ahead.
Exact or even rumoured specs for the LG G Flex are still unknown, but it is bound to be based on the LG G2 smartphone that was unveiled back in August.
