New iPhone 5S issues have surfaced, with latest reports suggesting that that handset’s accelerometer is currently suffering from a range of problems.
With a number of early iPhone 5S adopters having reported concerns with the phone’s integrated sensors, new reports have suggested a new accelerometer supplier could be responsible for the phone’s latest problems.
With Apple having switched from an STMicroelectronics sensor to a Bosch Sensortech BMA220 component for the new iPhone 5S, the handset has seemingly inherited a rather sever problem. It has been suggested that the new chip, which should offer measurements backed on bias and variance, is a little off on the bias front, meaning results can be very misleading.
In order to counteract these problems, it has been recommended that all apps which rely on the phone’s accelerometer for data collection or feedback should incorporate a calibration process during first use. This would allow the apps to compensate for the individual bias issues of each and every phone.
A number of apps make use of the phone’s integrated accelerometer for different reasons. While maps and compass apps can use the component for navigation purposes, gaming apps can use it to allow gamers to steer a car or look around corners.
While Apple has yet to formally comment on the latest iPhone 5S problems, the new issue follows severe stock shortages which stilted the phone’s introduction last month.
Far from the only iPhone 5S problems to have troubled Apple’s latest flagship phone, the new accelerometer issues follow concerns around an iPhone 5S blue screen of death which caused the phone to crash when exiting iWorks apps.
