Rockstar’s revamped version of Grand Theft Auto 5 is officially a hit with next-gen gamers with the developer announcing sales of almost 10 million on PS4 and Xbox One.

The bestselling game was released on the new formats in November last year following phenomenal success on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 console.

Now the company says it has now shipped more than 45 million copies of the game on all formats, with 10m of those coming on the next-gen machines.

As a result, the game was the number four best-selling new retail game in the United States in 2014 based on the PS4 and Xbox One sales in November and December alone.

The developer and publisher Take-Two can also expect another massive boost when the game finally hits PC in March.

The good news continues to roll in for Take-Two with the GTA Online portal performing above expectations. The company reported a 64 per cent year on year growth across all titles.

Those figures, reported in the publisher’s impressive quarterly earnings called on Tuesday, include the GTA series, Borderlands, NBA 2K and Civilization: Beyond Earth.
