Apple says its new iOS 8 software is now active on 72 per cent of the company’s devices.

The announcement comes as part of Apple’s monthly reveal of its iOS distribution figures, acquired through App Store access stats.

The new iOS 8 share is up from last month’s 68 per cent, although a rocky start for the software has likely turned many users off from upgrading.

In fact, iOS 7 still lives on a sizeable 25 per cent of all Apple devices – that’s down by a meagre 4 per cent from last month.

It’s worth noting that iOS 8 adoption has been slightly slower in terms of growth than its predecessor. By this point, iOS 7 had already racked up an impressive 80 per cent adoption.

The iOS 8 adoption has also been significantly helped by the sale of record numbers of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units, both of which touted the software fresh out of the box.

Whatever the case, iOS is still leaps and bounds ahead of Android in terms of updating devices to the latest OS.

Yesterday it was revealed that the new Android 5.0 Lollipop, which launched back in September last year, is on just 1.6 per cent of devices.

While there are significantly more Android devices in circulation globally, this share is still a terrible consequence of the huge fragmentation for the Android platform.
