Microsoft has confirmed that it will not be selling an Xbox One without the Kinect, despite rumours that it would be doing so.

The latest rumour was that Microsoft would be selling a Kinect-free Xbox One bundle in November, for a reduced cost, according to sources supposedly “familiar with the matter”.

However, Microsoft has combated those claims, protecting the importance of its motion gaming peripheral for the Xbox One experience.

“We have no plans to introduce an Xbox One without Kinect,” said a Microsoft spokesperson. “We believe in Kinect and the value it brings to both games and entertainment, and believe $499 (£429 in the UK) is a great value for what consumers receive with their Xbox One.”

Microsoft has always maintained that the Kinect will always have to be plugged into the Xbox One for its next-generation console to function.

Of course, Microsoft has already performed a huge 180 turnaround on its Xbox One DRM and online check-in policies, but is holding firm on how essential Kinect is to Xbox One.

“Its unparalleled vision, motion and voice technology let you reach into games and entertainment like never before by dramatically expanding its field of view and fidelity,” said Microsoft of the Xbox One Kinect at E3. “It works in nearly any lighting condition, recognises precise motion control from a slight wrist rotation and distinguishes your voice even in a noisy room using advanced noise isolation.”

The Xbox One Kinect has a new active IR camera that enables it to see in the dark and is capable of automatically signing a user into the Xbox One whenever they enter the room.

Users can wake the Xbox One with a simple command, “Xbox On”, and it will turn on their TV as well.

Several developers have already said they will be integrating Xbox One Kinect commands into their games. Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts will both feature the functionality.
