LG has confirmed it will be showcasing “unbreakable and flexible” mobile displays at the annual SSID display exhibition this week.
The company will be demonstrating 5-inch flexible plastic OLED displays at the annual display conference this week, a revolution for smartphone devices.
“For the first time to the public, the company will unveil an unbreakable and flexible 5-inch plastic OLED panel for mobile devices,” reads an official LG statement. “The development comes at a crucial time when smart devices are being used more than ever and at increased risk for damage from drops, hits, and other accidents.”
LG said it would be able to deliver a flexible OLED display smartphone by the end of 2013. Vice President of LG Mobile, Yoon Bu-Hyen, said the company is working with LG Display to produce a smartphone with a flexible OLED screen by Q4 2013 in a call discussing the company’s Q1 2013 earnings.
If LG is showing the 5-inch plastic OLED displays already, we could be seeing a flexible display smartphone a little sooner than Q4 this year.
The South Korean company will also be showcased its 55-inch curved OLED TV and 5- and 7-inch HD LCD panels based on Oxide TFT. This next-generation TFT technology allows the company to produce thin displays with high transparency, whilst being more energy efficient.
The 5-inch Oxide TFT panel will feature a bezel just 1.0mm thick, enabling the production of edge-to-edge smartphone screens that are light and produce a lot less heat.
The 7-inch version is an optimised touchscreen that LG claims will offer “superior touch functionality” for mobile devices.
“Recent trends indicate that the small- and medium-sized display market is moving towards high resolution and low power consumption, and the large panel market to OLED and Ultra HD,” said Dr. Sang-Deok Yeo, CTO and Executive Vice President at LG Display. “With the resulting rapid need for new display advancements, LG Display, at the forefront of these trends, is well positioned to lead the market with its differentiated and cutting-edge technologies.”
The annual SID Display Week will run from May 19 – 24 in Vancouver, Canada.
