Microsoft has made the preview version of its Windows 10 operating system available to download for a limited number of Lumia smartphones.
The forthcoming new software, which will enable a universal experience across all Windows devices, is now up for grabs on some devices currently running Windows Phone 8.1.
Microsoft Insiders who’re in possession of a Lumia 630, 635, 636, 638, 730 or 830 can jump on board via the Windows Insider app. Those who aren’t already members can sign up easily using their Microsoft account.
Somewhat surprisingly the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520 aren’t part of the roll out right now, despite recent speculation they’d be at the front of the queue.
The phone-centric preview was first showcased at Microsoft’s blockbusting event in Redmond last month.
Users will be able to access ‘universal,’ touch-friendly office apps, a united messaging experience, synced notifications across devices and customisable photo home screen backgrounds.
Skype chat is also folded into the new messaging app, ending the segregation between IMs and VoIP calls and regular SMS messages.
Microsoft says: “Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones is here today, but it’s far from being finished. In fact, it's fairly similar to your current phone (assuming you have Windows Phone 8.1)—just a little rougher around the edges, and with a lot more potential to grow.
"Join the Windows Insider Program to make sure you get all the new features that are on the way. If you’re okay with a moving target and don’t want to miss out on the latest stuff, keep reading. Technical Preview could be just your thing.”

Today’s preview version represents only a taste of what Windows Phone users have to look forward to.
Also, just like the desktop version, those Insiders are working with early builds of the software so will probably experience a few crashes and bugs here and there.
"We're not kidding about the expert thing. So if you think APN is a cable news network, Technical Preview may not be right for you," Microsoft says when warning folks it's for Windows Phone aficionados only.
