A new mobile analytics report has revealed iPhone 6 Plus users are, on average, consuming twice as much mobile data as those rocking an iPhone 6.

According to Citrix (via Apple Insider), iPhone 6 Plus owners’ data habits are closer to a tablet user than those of a smartphone owner.

The massive increase in data consumption seems to prove theories users of the larger-screened 5.5-inch device are making good use of the full HD Retina Display in order to stream video.

While the iPhone 6 Plus data use is twice that of the iPhone 6, according to the analytics, both have resulted in significantly higher usage than the previous generation 4-inch iPhones.

According to Citrix, an iPhone 6 Plus owner’s data usage is 10x times that of an iPhone 3GS user, although that represents a different time when high powered video streaming apps weren’t necessarily available.

The research also lends credence to recent suggestions the iPhone 6 Plus has started to cannibalise iPad sales.

During its record breaking last financial quarter, Apple announced it had sold an astonishing 74.5 million iPhone handsets. In that period iPad sales dropped by 19 per cent to 21.4m.
