LG's VR for G3 headset will be free with new LG G3 purchases
LG has joined the Virtual Reality footrace with a new headset designed to pair with its LG G3 Android smartphone.
The new VR for G3 headset is based on the Google Cardboard blueprints, but constructed from plastic especially to house the firm’s flagship smartphone.
The simple design is formed from three pieces of plastic and simply requires the user to dock the LG G3 handset in order to jump into the new VR worlds.
There’s also a slot for the camera lens and the unique rear-mounted volume rocker, plus what appears to be holes for a head strap.
Unlike the existing $199 Samsung Gear VR, LG is giving away the VR for G3 hardware with every purchase of a new LG G3 handset
LG is yet to announce (via The Verge) release schedules beyond that and has not announced which territories will have an opportunity to pick up a VR for G3 handset.
It’s also unclear whether LG, like Samsung, is planning to introduce new software experiences to accompany the new hardware, but the headset is compatible with the limited range of games and experiences available on the Google Play Store.

The launch adds a new string to the bow of LG's flagship smartphone, which was launched in late 2014. The 5.5-inch handset earned a near-flawless 9/10 score from TrustedReviews back in November thanks to its pin-sharp QHD display, excellent camera, slick UI and competitive price point.
