PC is the fastest growing gaming platform according to British trade body UKIE, ahead of the Xbox One and PS4 launch.
The Xbox One and PS4 could have a bigger rival in PC gaming than Microsoft or Sony expected.
New research within the digital charts project from UK trade body UKIE has revealed the gaming market share for PC titles both boxed and digital has risen 5 per cent.
This 5 per cent rise was for the first half of 2013, closing the gap between the desktop platform and Xbox 360 and PS3.
PC game titles accounted for 22 per cent of all purchases made during the first half of this year, nearly equalling the PS3 at 25 per cent.
The Xbox 360 market share is still the highest at 34 per cent, which like the PS3 is a figure for boxed purchases alone.
PS3 game sales rose by 3 per cent and Xbox 360 by 2 per cent. This percentage was gained by a drop in Nintendo console and handheld console games.
For Q1 and Q2 2013 combined, the Nintendo Wii titles and Nintendo DS accounted for 5 per cent each of the market, while the Nintendo 3DS took a 6 per cent share.
This is down from the same period in 2012, which saw the Wii take 12 percent and DS 9 per cent of the market. The Nintendo 3DS saw its market share rise by 1 per cent this year from 5 per cent in 2012.
Strangely enough, the UKIE research doesn’t feature the Nintendo Wii U, and this could well be due to the fact sales of games for the console are too low.
The Xbox One and PS4 will both be released next month. The Xbox One release date is scheduled for November 22 and the PS4 will launch a week later on November 29 in the UK.
