A 4G compatible Google Nexus 4 is reportedly on the cards, with the high speed revision of the Android phone tipped to land alongside the upcoming Google Nexus 5.
With a Google Nexus 5 release date widely expected to be held on either October 30 or 31, a new Bluetooth SIG filing has suggested that a 4G packing Google Nexus 4 update will also be announced alongside its replacement later this month.
Although the Google Nexus 4 was shipped with an LTE chip on board, this connectivity option has remained dormant since the phone’s release last year.
Now, however, an update could be rolled out, giving existing Nexus 4 handsets compatibility with LTE 4G networks and speeds. As well as the software patch which will bring 4G options to existing Nexus 4 owners, it has been suggested that the revised handset could also be sold through the Google Play Store alongside the next-gen Nexus 5 model.
The Google Nexus 4 went out of stock through Google’s retail channels last month, with the phone yet to have been restocked despite the current lack of a confirmed Google Nexus 5 release date.
With both the 4G Google Nexus 4 and Google Nexus 5 now expected to be sold alongside each other, the recent Google Nexus 4 price cut could help make the aging model a more tantalising option to a number of wannabe smartphone owners.
With the 8GB and 16GB Nexus 4 having originally cost just £239 and £279 respectively, Google back in August cut the phone’s price even further, with the two models now setting consumers back just £159 and £199.
The Google Nexus 5 is widely expected to be the next powerhouse of the smartphone scene, with a 2.3GHz quad-core processor tipped for inclusion alongside a 5-inch 1080p Full HD display, an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera and Google’s recently confirmed Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.
