The future of automated driving is nearing, with Nokia’s Executive Vice President of Here Maps claiming that all new cars will be connected as early as 2020.
Speaking at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi this week, Michael Harbherr, Nokia’s VP of Location and Commerce predicted that the car market is set for a tech themed overall, with all new vehicles in developed nations to incorporated connected capabilities this decade.
{pullquote}“I believe that in Europe by 2020 or 2021, every car rolling off the factory lines will be connected,”{pullquote} Harbherr said in an exclusive interview with TrustedReviews.
He added: “We are approaching the age of the internet of things where everything will be connected to the internet. The biggest internet of things is called the car.”
Giving just a little over six years for the connected car to become an ever-present feature on European roads the Nokia VP claimed that as well as offering improved smart features, connected cars will be able to communicate with each other to reduce traffic congestion as well introducing automated driving options.
“Cars are much better for being connected,” he stated. “You can go around traffic, around accidents you can do safety features and everything.”
Although there has been much talk around automated cars being introduced, Harbherr has claimed that it will not be a single development rolled out overnight which changes the market, but instead a number of smaller advancements.
“There are going to be many small progressions,” he told us. “There are going to be tens and tens of things which make up the phenomenon of autonomous driving.”
He added: “I think that automated, autonomous driving gets a lot of attention but we need to think much broader. We need to think about safety, the environment, pollution and eco friendliness. We need to think about a lot of things. This is not going to come in one switch.”
