Microsoft has announced Xbox One owners in North America will soon be able to access free-to-air TV channels via the new-gen console.
The functionality, which is already available via the Xbox One Digital TV tuner in several countries (including the UK), will enable users to plug in a TV tuner to receive signal via a traditional HD TV aerial.
Network channels like CBS, ABC, Fox, NBC and PBS will be available to view free using the console.
Microsoft is recommending a tuner from Huappauge, which costs $80 (around £53), while a cheaper model built especially for the Xbox One is coming in the next few months for $60 (about £40).
The addition could allow users to ditch their set-top box and access free-to-air channels using the combination of equipment mentioned above.
Given streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and the new Sling TV platform are available over the internet via the Xbox One, the over-the-air channels could offer a great complement to a web-focused streaming package.
In a post on the Xbox Wire website, the company wrote: “Support for over-the-air TV on Xbox One means access to broadcast networks available in your area, like CBS, FOX, NBC, and PBS, with no subscription cost.
“When paired with the recently released Sling TV, you can get all of those networks, plus ESPN, TNT, Disney Channel, Adult Swim, and more, live, on your Xbox One.”
